Biden to launch re-election campaign next week: Report

    [ad_1]

Washington: US President Joe Biden is preparing to announce his re-election campaign next week, a media outlet has reported.

Biden’s team has been working on a video that could be released on Tuesday, the fourth anniversary of his 2020 election run, The Washington Post reported, citing unidentified officials, who, it added, have warned that the official announcement could be delayed.

President Biden has been signalling a willingness to seek a second term even as a debate rages, including in the Democratic party, about his fitness for it given his age. He is 80 now and already the oldest President in US history. He will be 86 at the end of his second term if he wins.

    MS Education Academy

Biden said last October that it’s his “intention” to seek a second term and that he will decide in consultation with his family. He repeated that in an interview with a US media outlet in February. Though he did not go any further, his wife, First Lady Jill Biden did, saying he will run as he is “not done yet”.

The 2024 run will be his fourth campaign for the White House. He first ran in 1988 and then in 2008, which was won by President Barack Obama, who picked him for his vice-president. Biden was widely expected to run in 2016, at the end of Obama’s second term, but gave it a miss.

Biden succeeded on his third, in 2020, and now his fourth.

As sitting President, the Democratic party nomination is his, even though two people have announced so far their desire to seek it as well – self-help author Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a nephew of late President John F. Kennedy and son of Robert F. Kennedy, whose run for the White House was ended by his assassination. Neither of them is capable of mounting a credible challenge to the President.

The Republican line-up is still taking shape with former President Donald Trump, who has already announced; Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the UN and Asa Hutchinson, the former governor of Arkansas the others. Also preparing to jump is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has emerged as the palatable Trump; former Vice-President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

All eyes are on Trump. He leads all polls of Republican contenders, but is beset with mounting legal troubles, including an indictment in a New York court. He won’t be deterred by these cases, he has said, and he could, legally and constitutionally, continue his run even if was jailed.

Biden prepares to launch reelection bid as soon as next week

Some in the president’s orbit, seeing his standing buoyed by Democrats’ strong showing in last year’s midterms, saw no reason to rush his reelection declaration, pointing to a lack of intraparty challengers and a chaotic Republican primary field. But others have pushed for an announcement sooner than later, to begin fundraising for an expensive campaign — and to silence the constant questions about Biden’s 2024 intentions.

Advisers had originally looked at an April launch date — noting that President Barack Obama picked that month to announce his own re-election — but then toyed with moving it up following Biden’s State of the Union address in February. Recent discussions in Biden world slid the launch to later in the spring or summer but April 25, the anniversary of Biden’s 2019 announcement, long stood as an informal target.

Making the announcement in a low-key video message with fundraising solicitation would echo how the Obama-Biden ticket unveiled its bid in 2011.

The White House declined to comment Thursday. Some Biden advisers cautioned that nothing would be official until the president himself said it, and there are members of his inner circle who have harbored doubts that he would run again.

The Washington Post first reported on the possible timing of the announcement.

Biden does not expect to face a serious primary challenge, though some in the Democratic party have voiced concerns about his age. If he wins again, Biden would be 82 when he takes the oath of office for a second time. He would be 86 when he leaves the White House.

Advisers to the president have long telegraphed that the president, were he to run, would not ramp up a barnstorming general election campaign until next year. Instead, he would likely follow the example of several other sitting presidents by using a Rose Garden strategy in 2023, mixed with official and political events and travel to tout his administration’s accomplishments.

But officially launching the campaign would allow Biden to begin fundraising ahead of next year’s general election, which could feature a rematch with the man he beat in 2020, former President Donald Trump.

Biden, who captured the presidency in his third bid for the White House, is famously indecisive, a habit exacerbated by decades in the über-deliberative Senate. He publicly took his time mulling a decision against running in 2016 and to launch his run in 2020. He missed two self-imposed deadlines before choosing Vice President Kamala Harris as a running-mate.

Biden’s team is bullish on the president’s legislative record — which includes massive infrastructure, climate change and health care plans — forming the backbone of his reelection campaign, as well as job growth and his stewardship of the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

High inflation, a fragile economy and Biden’s middling approval numbers are vulnerabilities, aides concede. And his age looms as an issue and could put more of a focus on Harris in this next campaign.

Trump’s possible return stands as a primary motivation to run again, as Biden has declared his predecessor an existential threat to the republic. The president would campaign this time against a backdrop of divided government, with the Republican-controlled House promising to impede his agenda and investigate his administration and family.

Aides have not said when Biden would hold his first campaign-style event. His schedule next week includes hosting the president of South Korea for a state visit and appearing at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He and his team also may meet with prominent Democratic donors in Washington.

3rd Manipur BJP legislator quits govt post in a week

    [ad_1]

Imphal: Amidst continuing resentment among section of BJP MLAs against Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, P. Brojen Singh on Thursday became the third ruling party legislator has quit his government post, resigning as Chairman of the Manipur Development Society.

In his resignation letter to the Chief Minister, he said that he has stepped down on “epersonal grounds”.

Brojen Singh represents the Wangjing Tentha Assembly constituency in Thoubal district.

    MS Education Academy

Earlier, BJP MLAs Thokchom Radheysham and Karam Shyam quit as Chief Minister’s advisor and the Chairman of the Manipur State Tourism Development Corporation on April 17 and April 13 respectively. Both had served as ministers in the first Biren Singh led government (2017-2022).

All the three MLAs claimed that they were not given due responsibility, funds and authority to function in their posts.

In a video clip, Shyam said: “A leader should be committed and sincere instead of threatening the followers. If such threats occurred frequently then an eruption of a revolt among the followers is a must… Manipur is becoming a corruption-free state but, in corruption, only the giver and the takers will know.”

Political and informed sources said that some more discontented BJP MLAs are likely to quit their respective government posts and are now lobbying with the central party leadership seeking their intervention in the affairs of Manipur.

The aggrieved legislators include a few Kuki MLAs, who are reportedly unhappy with an eviction drive targeting the community.

“Chief Minister N. Biren Singh is likely to go to New Delhi in a day or two for a possible reconciliation with the disgruntled BJP legislators with the intervention of the central leaders,” said a party leader, refusing to be named.

The Chief Minister is yet to respond to the political developments.

Winning 32 seats in the 60-member Assembly, the BJP government retained power for a second consecutive term in the last year polls. Various other parties are supporting the BJP government too.

    tennessee lawmakers expulsion 98924

“Earlier this month, the president spoke to them by phone after they were subjugated to expulsion votes in the Tennessee Statehouse for peacefully protesting in support of stronger gun safety laws following the shooting at Covenant School in Nashville. During that call, the president thanked them for their leadership in seeking to ban assault weapons and standing up for the democratic values,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday.

“And the three lawmakers thanked the president for his leadership on gun safety and for spotlighting the undemocratic and unprecedented attacks on them in a Tennessee Statehouse.”

She added: “The president looks forward to continuing that discussion when they all meet with him on Monday.”

The three lawmakers captured national attention in the wake of the March 27 Nashville mass shooting, as the nation watched Tennessee Republicans’ unprecedented use of political power to expel two of the Democrats. National Democrats have rallied around the events, and the White House has seized on the opportunity to do the same — repeatedly weighing in on the events.

Vice President Kamala Harris visited Nashville almost two weeks ago, where she met privately with the three representatives and later spoke to a packed room full of students, less than 24 hours after Tennessee Republicans booted the two Black lawmakers from office.

Meta to slash around 4K high-skilled jobs this week: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Meta (formerly Facebook) is reportedly set for another round of mass layoffs on Wednesday that will affect at least 4,000 highly-skilled employees, the media reported.

This week’s layoffs could be in the range of 4,000 jobs, according to a report in Vox, citing sources.

In March, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company would cut 10,000 jobs in the coming months.

    MS Education Academy

In an internal memo seen by The Washington Post, Meta said that “the company will begin notifying employees on its technical teams whose jobs are being cut”.

Meta will also announce newly reorganised teams and management hierarchies, the report mentioned.

“Facebook parent company Meta will announce details about new job cuts on Wednesday, part of a months-long downsizing and restructuring effort that will trim 10,000 employees amid multiple waves of layoffs,” The Washington Post tweeted on Wednesday.

In March, Zuckerberg announced to sack an additional 10,000 employees via several job cut rounds in the coming months.

Zuckerberg said that overall, “we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired”.

The fresh cuts came just four months after he laid off 11,000 employees, or 13 per cent of the company, in November last year.

  • Won’t implement decision to scrap 4% Muslim quota till next week: Karnataka govt to SC

Won’t implement decision to scrap 4% Muslim quota till next week: Karnataka govt to SC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Karnataka government on Tuesday assured the Supreme Court that for a week further, it would not implement its decision to scrap the 4 per cent Muslim quota in the OBC category in jobs and education.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Karnataka government, contended before a bench of Justices K M Joseph and B V Nagarathna that the state government would require more time to file its affidavit in the matter. Last week, the state government had sought time till Monday to file its response. After hearing Mehta’s submissions, the top court deferred the hearing till April 25.

The state government, on April 13, had assured that it will not go ahead with any admission to educational institutions or make appointments on jobs in terms of its March 27 order.

    MS Education Academy

The apex court had made some strong observations against the manner in which the state government scrapped the 4 per cent OBC quota for Muslims and placed them under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, saying the foundation of the decision-making process is “highly shaky and flawed”.

The top court had told the Solicitor General, representing the Karnataka government: “Prima facie, we are telling you, the first thing is that the order which you have passed… appears to suggest that foundation of decision making process is highly shaky and flawed… it is on an interim report, the state could have waited for a final report that is one aspect. What is the great urgency?”

Mehta submitted that the court should allow the state government to file its reply in the matter and the admissions will begin in May and nothing is going to happen if matter is heard next week either on Monday or Tuesday.

“Please allow me to file a reply, these are original proceedings. There was no empirical data as a religion….. they (Muslims) were included on the basis of religion. It is not something extraordinary. Can’t it wait till April 17?”

Senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Dushyant Dave, Prof Ravivarma Kumar and Gopal Sankaranarayanan appeared for petitioners L. Ghulam Rasool and others. Dave argued that staying the government order would mean Muslims continue to get the benefit of the reservation of four per cent and “if not, they will lose out in education and employment… Why should we lose out at all ? this notification is per se illegal and unconstitutional.”

Sibal said since the early 1990s, they were backward and now they put them in the general category and after 23 years, Muslims are in general category without a study. This is a direct violation of Article 14, and also the entire notification is violative of Article 14 and it is taking away reservation, he said.

“It is like I am poor, so I will be in the general category”, he added.

Dave reiterated there is no study to support scrapping of Muslim quota.

After hearing detailed arguments, the bench said the decision was prima facie based on fallacious assumption and was vitiated as it is based on an interim report of a commission. The petitioners moved the apex court challenging the Karnataka government decision to scrap the Muslim quota.

Land issue: Visva-Bharati hopeful Amartya Sen will respond to eviction notice by next week

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Visva-Bharati is hopeful that Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, who is accused of illegally holding a 13-decimal plot owned by the university, will respond by next week to an eviction notice sent to him.

Otherwise, the central university said it will take any decision deemed appropriate to recover “unauthorisedly occupied land”.

The eviction notice, pasted near the main gate of Sen’s Santiniketan residence on Friday, which was also mailed to him, said that the “proceedings will be disposed of on April 19 through a final order”.

    MS Education Academy

The 89-year-old economist is now abroad.

“He (Sen) is yet to respond to the notice. We will wait for a few more days… till the middle of next week as specified in the notice,” Visva-Bharati spokesperson Mahua Banerjee told PTI on Saturday.

According to the notice, Sen or his advocates or authorised representatives may remain present during the disposal and passing of the final order at 12 noon on April 19. He can also submit a written statement by 6 pm on April 18 as the “last chance”.

The university has been claiming that Sen is in possession of 1.38 acres of land on the Santiniketan campus, which is in excess of his legal entitlement of 1.25 acres.

Denying the charges, Sen has repeatedly accused the varsity authorities of harassing him as he is a critic of several actions of Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty, and voiced his objection to certain policies of the Narendra Modi government.
