  • Thousands rally as wave of terrorism hits Pakistan

Thousands rally as wave of terrorism hits Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Peshawar: Thousands across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) took to the streets to record their protest against increasing lawlessness and terrorism in the region, demanding that the vulnerable police force be armed to the teeth, local media reported.

They were holding white flags and demanding strict action against terrorism, The Express Tribune reported.

Civil society member, lawyers, political workers and the general public attended the protests held at Peshawar, Bajaur, Dir Upper, Dir Lower, Bannu, DI Khan and other key cities.

They said the police have been in the vanguard of terror fight and they should be protected and equipped properly to combat the menace effectively, The Express Tribune reported.

The rallies come as Pakistan has been hit by a wave of terrorism, mostly in K-P, as also in Balochistan and the Punjab town of Mianwali, which borders K-P. A terror attack also reached as far as the peripheries of Islamabad.

On January 30, a powerful explosion ripped through a mosque in Peshawar’s Red Zone area where between 300 and 400 people – mostly police officers – had gathered for prayers. The suicide blast blew away the wall of the prayer hall and caused the inner roof to collapse in which 101 people, mostly policemen, were killed.

January was the deadliest month since 2018, in which 134 people lost their lives – a 139 per cent spike – and 254 received injuries in at least 44 terrorist attacks across the country, The Express Tribune reported.

On Friday, several rallies organised by local rights organisations were held in K-P’s Shangla district. The leadership of different political parties, including the PTI, PPP, Awami National Party (ANP) and others, had addressed the rallies.

Election officials ready themselves for the next wave of Trump followers

    local officials illo

There is expected to be a more intentional recruiting effort from national organizations focused on election clerks and other similar positions this cycle, in an effort to counter a potential wave of MAGA-like candidates running for those under-the-radar positions.

Run for Something, a liberal organization founded after Trump’s election focused on lining up candidates to run for office across the ballot, launched “Clerk Work” last year to recruit candidates for local positions in the election process. It covers everything from county clerks to boards of supervisors.

The group had a hand in recruiting more than 220 candidates in the midterms for voting-related positions, Run for Something co-founder Ross Morales Rocketto said in an interview. That included 32 top-tier candidates, with a focus on county clerk positions in states like Colorado and California and county commissioners in Nevada. The group said 20 of them won their contests, including 10 of the 13 who were running against candidates Run for Something identified as an “election denier.”

“The thing that keeps me up at night isn’t whether we can beat most of these folks — I think we can beat them in most places — it’s actually whether we get people on the ballot to run against them,” Morales Rocketto said. “And that to me is actually the harder challenge in all of this.”

Over the next two years, the group is focusing in on a handful of states — including Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Texas and Michigan — as top priorities to recruit election officials.

Keep Country First Policy Action, a group founded by allies of former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), also launched an effort last year to recruit “pro-freedom, pro-democracy” candidates for office, with a focus on local election positions.

In interviews, local officials who will be on the ballot in 2024 said they expected it to be a challenging election, with the added attention on both the official side of the job, as they prepare their offices for a busy presidential election year, and on their own individual campaigns.

  • Linda Fruhvirtova crests wave of Czech excellence at Australian Open

Linda Fruhvirtova crests wave of Czech excellence at Australian Open

    [ad_1]

Every few years, without fail, a new group of young players emerges ready to consolidate the Czech Republic’s reputation as one of the dominant nations in women’s tennis. At the Australian Open, the process is unfolding once more. On Saturday, the 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova reached the fourth round of a grand slam tournament for the first time, defeating her compatriot Marketa Vondrousova, a former Czech prodigy herself, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 to advance.

As both players struggled with physical problems in the final stages of a dramatic encounter, Fruhvirtova sealed victory by playing clear and focused tennis in the decisive moments as she recovered from a break down in the third set.

The victory marks another step forward for one of the most promising young players on the tour. Last year, Fruhvirtova broke through by defeating Victoria Azarenka en route to the fourth round of the Miami Open. After qualifying for her first grand slam main draw at the US Open, she won her first WTA title in Chennai in September. She is now the youngest player inside the top 100.

Czech teens have already marked some of the biggest stories of the year so far. The 2023 season began with a surprise run from Fruhvirtova’s junior teammate Linda Noskova, 18, who reached the final in Adelaide from qualifying, beating two top-10 players along the way.

As Noskova fell in the first round of qualifying at the Australian Open, fatigued by her efforts in Adelaide, two other Czech teenagers stole the spotlight by reaching the main draw: the 16-year-old Sara Bejlek and Fruhvirtova’s younger sister, Brenda, who became one of the youngest players to qualify for the main draw of a slam at 15.

While Linda was establishing herself inside the top 100 last year, Brenda built her ranking by tearing through the lower-level ITF events, winning eight $25,000 titles. Now projected to rise to 129th in the live rankings, Brenda is progressing at an even quicker rate than her elder sister and it is only a matter of time before she joins her inside the top 100.

In the fourth round, Linda will face Croatia’s Donna Vekic for her first grand slam quarter-final. Earlier, Vekic easily defeated Nuria Párrizas Díaz of Spain 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka reinforced her status as one of the favourites as she tore through Elise Mertens, the 26th seed, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the fourth round.

After suffering from serving problems through much of last season, Sabalenka has served confidently and efficiently as she started the year by winning her 11th career title in Adelaide. She still has not dropped a set in 2023.
