  • Kuwait to increase electricity, water bills by 50%

Kuwait to increase electricity, water bills by 50%

    [ad_1]

Kuwait: Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water is set to increase electricity and water tariffs by 50 percent this year, local media reported.

The price hike will be implemented with the approval of the Kuwaiti National Assembly.

“The executive study to increase prices of electricity and water has been ready for some time, but the government’s resignation delayed its implementation,” sources told Kuwait Times.

The report indicated that citizens will be exempted from this increase in their private homes, however, their investments and commercial properties will be subject to the increases.

The ministry has reportedly said the increase is necessary as global energy prices continue to rise, as well as “the burden it poses to the ministry’s budget and public funds.”

“There are government fears that the National Assembly will reject this increase, but the government will fight for its approval, especially since the constitutional court’s decision to annul the parliament might change the political scene,” the sources added.

  • 400,000 gallons of radioactive water leaked from US nuclear power plant

400,000 gallons of radioactive water leaked from US nuclear power plant

    [ad_1]

Washington: About 400,000 gallons of radioactive water has leaked from a nuclear power plant in Monticello, the midwestern US state of Minnesota, regulators revealed recently.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) said this week that state agencies are monitoring Xcel Energy’s efforts to clean up “a release of water contaminated with tritium” detected at the company’s Monticello nuclear-generating plant, Xinhua news agency reported.

Xcel Energy reported the leak to the Minnesota Duty Officer and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in late November 2022 after finding unusual results during routine groundwater monitoring.

The four-month delay in making public the leak of radioactive water has sparked concerns about public safety and transparency.

The MPCA said in a news release that the leak has been stopped and has not reached the Mississippi River or contaminated drinking water sources.

There is no evidence at this time to indicate a risk to any drinking water wells in the vicinity of the plant, the release also read.

Tritium is a naturally occurring radioactive form of hydrogen that is produced in the atmosphere. It is a byproduct of the production of electricity by nuclear power plants.

Xcel Energy said the leak came from a water pipe running between two buildings at its Monticello facility and was stopped.

The company also said it is monitoring the groundwater plume through two dozen wells while pumping contaminated groundwater through extraction wells.

“We are working to ensure this cleanup is concluded as thoroughly as possible with minimal or no risk to drinking water supplies,” said Kirk Koudelka, MPCA assistant commissioner for land and strategic initiatives.

Xcel Energy is said to be exploring building aboveground storage tanks or installing a retention pond to store water containing tritium that has been collected during ongoing recovery activities.

Hyderabad: Water board drafts plan to meet demand in Summer; Ramzan in focus

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Managing director of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) Dana Kishore on Tuesday announced Summer Action Plan 2023 in a review meeting to meet the water requirements of the city and the surrounding villages.

Currently, 565 Million Gallons of Water (MGD) are being supplied in the city daily and the arrangements to supply an additional 42 Million Gallons of Water (MGD) will be completed by the end of May.

Of the additional 42 MGD, the areas located in the city limits will receive 22 MGD of water and the villages within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits will receive 20 MGD of water.

He directed the officials to make special arrangements in view of the upcoming Ramzan month, to supply water tankers to various mosques in the city. He asked the officials to ensure that there are no sewage overflow issues in these areas and allocated mini-jetting machines in each division to resolve them.
