‘A Waste Project’ to clean up Nerella lake in Hyderabad

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A Waste Project is organising a clean-up drive on Thursday at the Nerella lake walkway, Kondapur with the help of volunteers from across the city.

The dried-up Nerella Lake, which is situated at a 10 minute walk from the Sarath City Mall, is strewn with plastic bottles, empty liquor bottles and plastic bags. Volunteers from across Hyderabad will be tidying up the space with some help from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Speaking about the initiative, Avinash told Siasat.com, “Our aim is to use social media as a tool to raise awareness and inculcate personal responsibility against littering. Of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 22 are in India. We want to reach out to youth through social media and sensitise them about throwing garbage on roads and littering in their surroundings”.

    MS Education Academy

A Waste Project was born out of a Reddit post made by Avinash, a Hyderabad based IT professional, informing people of his intentions to clean up garbage and asking them to join him.

He was joined by 2 more IT professionals, Nooman and Arjun, and a student, Eashwar. The four of them together organised upto 9 clean-up drives in the city. It has quickly turned into a volunteer backed organised effort to clean up public spaces in the city.

A Waste Project is inviting citizens to share images of litter and garbage in their surroundings on their social media platforms to organise the clean-up drives and also to join them at the Nerella Lake walkway clean up on Thursday.

The team provides gloves, masks and garbage collection bags to all the volunteers to keep them safe. Post the clean-up the before and after pictures are posted on social media to encourage netizens to keep their surroundings clean.

In the past, A Waste Project organised various clean up drives at Madhapur 100ft road, BHEL stadium, Malkam cheruvu, Raidurgam and Lanco hills lake, Manikonda.

  • Freeze sliced bread and fry banana skins: Max La Manna’s quick guide to reducing food waste

Freeze sliced bread and fry banana skins: Max La Manna’s quick guide to reducing food waste

    [ad_1]

What would you do with an extra £730? That’s the amount the average UK household wastes each year, by throwing away untouched or unopened food, according to the waste and sustainability charity Wrap. That’s a staggering 2m tonnes and the equivalent of roughly one in every three bags of groceries we bring into our homes. Food waste is not only bad for our pockets, it’s bad for the environment, too: 36m tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions could be saved if we stopped throwing it into landfill. Storing ingredients properly to keep them fresher for longer, planning mealtimes and getting creative with leftovers are three simple ways with which we can reduce our food-waste footprint. Let’s start with the UK’s five most-wasted ingredients.

Bread We chuck out about 20m slices of bread every day. I always store half my fresh loaves in the freezer, sliced and wrapped tightly. Revive a stale loaf by sprinkling with a little water, placing on a lined baking sheet and into a low oven for a few minutes (or in the microwave in 30-second blasts). Alternatively, turn it into breadcrumbs (or do like the Italians and make pangrattato), use to thicken soups, such as pappa al pomodoro (Tuscan bread and tomato soup), ribollita and gazpacho, or use instead of pine nuts in a pesto; they’re the secret to thicker sauces, too.

Leafy greens Some 40% of all bagged salad gets thrown away. To extend its shelf life, wash, pat dry and store half in a sealed container with a sheet of kitchen roll. Blanch the other half, squeeze out the excess water, wrap in a bag and freeze for stews, curries and stir-fries. Or blitz leafy greens with a splash of milk for smoothies, pancake batter or in sweet and savoury bakes such as muffins or chocolate cake – this is a great way to sneak a few extra greens into meals, and you won’t even taste them. You can also freeze blitzed greens in ice-cube trays.

Bananas Whip overripe bananas into cake batters, muffins or pancakes (they add natural sweetness and act as a thickener), or chop and freeze for smoothies and “nice cream” (AKA peeled and blitzed frozen banana). If they’re organic, you can eat the skins, too. I make a mean BLT (banana peel, lettuce and tomato sandwich) with them: shred the peel with a fork, then marinate in two tablespoons of soy sauce, two teaspoons of brown sugar, a teaspoon of smoked paprika, a dash of liquid smoke and a pinch of garlic powder for 15 minutes. Fry until crisp, then coat with the remaining marinade, or bake for 15 minutes at 190C (170C fan)/375F/gas 5, turning halfway.

Potatoes More than 4.4m potatoes are binned in the UK every day. If they start to sprout, cut them out and the potatoes will be fine to eat – but if they start turning green, it’s time to compost. Store them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated cupboard, covered in newspaper and away from heat sources such as the oven or fridge. Looking for a fun way to eat leftover roasties? Pop them in a waffle maker, and you’ll have mini potato waffles in minutes.

Milk Every day, 3.1 million glasses’ worth of milk get poured down the sink. Freeze in ice-cube trays to add to sauces (bechamel, garlic cream, alfredo or for mac and cheese). Or make panna cotta, baked rice pudding, batter for French toast or custard.

Human waste in water tank case: DNA test of 11 people today

    [ad_1]

Chennai: DNA samples of 11 people will be collected on Tuesday in connection with the Vengavayil case in which human feces were found dumped in a water tank that supplies drinking water to a Dalit colony.

According to sources, the DNA samples, including that of policemen, are to be collected at Pudukkottai Government Medical College.

The move follows a directive from a Pudukkottai special court. The court has also directed the presence of an Assistant professor of Pudukottai Government Medical College when samples are taken.

    MS Education Academy

The shocking incident of human excreta found in an overhead water tank that supplies drinking water to a Dalit colony in Vengavayil in Pudukottai district had hit national headlines.

Presence of human waste was detected after a test was conducted in the drinking water since many people in the colony fell ill. The incident occurred in December and after initial investigations by the local police, the Crime Branch CID is now investigating the case.

Several Dalit outfits, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), have been insisting on transferring the case to the CBI.

The DNA test is being conducted to identify the people whose feces were found in the overhead water tank.

Hyderabad: NEERI holds seminar on hazardous waste management

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in partnership with Re Sustainability Limited, on Friday hosted a seminar on ‘Invest in Our Planet’ to commemorate World Earth Day, which falls on 22nd April at the Engineering Staff College of India.

Experts and stakeholders from across the country discussed the pressing issue of hazardous waste management and shared their insights and experiences on the latest advancements in waste management practices, including hazardous waste management, resource recovery, circular economy initiatives, and more.

The event comprised three technical and information-intensive sessions on current practices in hazardous waste management, circular economy opportunities in hazardous waste management, and new developments in hazardous waste management- towards sustainable growth, said a press release.

    MS Education Academy

One of the major needs identified was the facilitation of resource waste recovery and transformation of the market by promoting substantial utilization and supplementary use of fuels.

The challenges discussed during the seminar included funding deficiency, lack of focus on waste minimization, and the need for corrective actions to measure performance. The importance of waste minimization was emphasized, and industries were urged to start taking it seriously.

Another significant issue addressed was the prevention of groundwater contamination through sustainable treatment and aquifer remediation. The role of technology in remediation, such as soil retorting and mercury-contaminated site treatment, was also highlighted.

Proper enforcement of waste management regulations was stressed as a critical need to ensure effective and sustainable waste management practices.

Re Sustainability managing director Goutham Reddy said, “India recognized hazardous waste management early on, but progress was slow due to the lack of infrastructure and regulation. The definition of hazardous waste has always been a matter of debate worldwide, starting from the very definition of waste itself. We must work together to find innovative solutions that are sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.”

  • Indian students turn PPE waste into eco-friendly bricks without cement

Indian students turn PPE waste into eco-friendly bricks without cement

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A team of engineering students has devised a method to turn hospital personal protective equipment (PPE) waste, which typically swells-up landfills, into bricks that are stronger and do not use any cement.

Not only do these “poly bricks” have a three-time higher compressive strength as compared to the common red bricks, they are much lighter and can be produced in a far shorter time.

Since the curing time to reach ISO standards is less than 24 hours, the bricks are ready quicker and cheaper than common red or concrete hollow bricks and meet the water absorption specifications.

    MS Education Academy

The team from the civil engineering department of Sona College — Aravind Kumar from final year, Kamalesh J B and Dharani Raj U, both from third year, and Adhavan P and Harshini E K, both from second year — found this solution while participating in a nation-wide competition.

“The technology is now available to hospital chains and other organisations interested in technology transfer to help tackle PPE waste and also reduce poisonous emissions,” Chocko Valliappa, Vice Chairman, Sona Group of education institutions, told IANS.

The poly brick making process starts by sterilising PPE kits with ultraviolet (UV) rays, subjecting it to heat at 160 degrees centigrade, adding sand aggregates and casting the polypropylene mass into bricks.

The poly bricks are eco-friendly as they do not use any cement or water in the process and cause minimal in process emissions as the PPE plastic waste is subjected to less than 200 degrees centigrade.

The WHO recently said the use of PPE kits used during the Covid-19 pandemic was added burden putting on the environment, due to their single-use nature.

According to the educational institution, these eco-friendly bricks can be used as regular bricks for walls as also as paver blocks instead of red bricks — in the process reducing plastic waste as well as pollution caused during cement production.

The poly bricks have good cement adhesion and can be plastered with cement.

Dr N Karuppasamy, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, Sona College of Technology who mentored the team said that a patent application has been filed for this technology.

The civil engineering department has also patented a technology to use plastic waste in brick production that replaces almost 70 per cent of sand with plastic.

  • France braces for another day of mayhem and violence

France braces for another day of mayhem and violence

    [ad_1]

Press play to listen to this article

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

PARIS — France is bracing for fresh chaos Tuesday with a day of protests planned against Emmanuel Macron’s detested pensions reform, and trade unions calling for a general strike.

Protests last Thursday descended into turmoil with clashes between police and protesters, and scenes of violence across the country. In the wake of the unrest, which resulted in more than 450 arrests, the French president was forced to cancel a state visit by King Charles III amid security concerns.

Public transport, universities, schools and public services are expected to be disrupted again Tuesday. The impact of the industrial action is being felt across all sectors and areas of public life. A rolling strike of waste collectors in Paris has meant that trash is still piled high in parts of the French capital, and a strike at refineries has led to fuel shortages at some petrol pumps.

Despite widespread unrest, the French president pledged last week that he would not backtrack on the pensions reform which raises the age of retirement to 64 from 62, saying it was “necessary” for the country to balance the books of its generous pensions scheme.

The French government sparked outrage when it invoked article 49.3 of the French constitution to pass its pensions reform, in a controversial move that bypassed a vote in parliament it was expected to lose. The government narrowly survived two motions of no confidence in the National Assembly after the controversial move.

Tuesday’s protest could be an indicator of whether Macron’s inflexibility whips up more discontent on the street or whether the protest movement is starting to subside. French police have been accused of using heavy-handed tactics and it is likely that students and pupils will join protests in greater numbers. On Saturday, a man was left in a critical condition after clashes with police at a French water reservoir project.

    Stalemate over pensions reform

Ahead of the protests on Tuesday, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne called for talks with trade unions and announced she would no longer use article 49.3 except when it comes to budgetary measures.

“Obviously there are tensions over the reform, we need to listen,” she told AFP on Sunday. “[We need] to calm the country and give the French some answers promptly.”

However, talks between the government and trade unions over the pensions reforms are at a standstill. Macron has said he is open to discussing a range of issues including working conditions, pay and work-related strain, but not the pensions reform. Trade unions say they would agree to talks only if the government agreed to re-examine the legal age of retirement.

With no clear way out and in the wake of a string of violent incidents over the last weeks, there are fears within the trade unions that France may be facing a socio-political crisis similar to the Yellow Jackets movement that rocked the country in 2018-2019.

Trade union leader Laurent Berger warned Monday that France was in “a total state of tension.”

“There is a common will [with the government] to find an exit for this protest movement and not descend into a madness that might take hold of the country, with violence and resentment,” he warned in an interview with French channel France 2.

  • ‘Ukraine doesn’t have any time to waste’: U.S. races to prepare Kyiv for spring offensive

‘Ukraine doesn’t have any time to waste’: U.S. races to prepare Kyiv for spring offensive

    [ad_1]

    united states russia 15990

As spring approaches, U.S. officials are increasingly concerned about Ukraine’s dwindling supply of ammunition, air defenses and experienced soldiers. Moscow and Kyiv are continuing to throw bodies into the fight for a southeastern city the U.S. does not consider strategically important. But the Pentagon says that regardless of Kyiv’s battlefield strategy, the U.S. wants Ukraine’s soldiers to have the weapons they need to keep fighting.

Russia has spent months pummeling the country with missiles, seeking not only to cause destruction but also deplete Ukraine’s air defense stocks. Ukrainian soldiers have described acute shortages of basic ammunition, including mortar rounds and artillery shells. And upwards of 100,000 Ukrainian forces have died in the year-long war, U.S. officials estimate, including the most experienced soldiers.

Many of these losses are taking place in Bakhmut, where both sides are suffering massive casualties. Led by soldiers from the mercenary Wagner Group, Russia has laid siege to the southeastern city for nine months, reducing it to ruins. Ukrainian forces have refused to yield, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisting that defending Bakhmut is key to holding other eastern cities.

“The Russians clearly are wanting to press forward to the boundaries of Donetsk all of the way to the west, and to do that they need to get hold of Bakhmut and the road network that goes past it,” said Dara Massicot, senior policy researcher at the RAND Institute.

But Austin recently told reporters that Bakhmut is “more of a symbolic value than it is strategic and operational value.”

Instead, U.S. officials are more focused on getting Ukraine ready for a major spring offensive to retake territory, which they expect to begin by May. Hundreds of Western tanks and armored vehicles, including for the first time eight armored vehicles that can launch bridges and allow troops to cross rivers, are en route to Ukraine for the offensive. The U.S. and European partners are also flowing massive amounts of ammunition and 155mm shells, which Ukraine has identified as its most urgent need.

U.S. aid packages “going back four or five months have been geared toward what Ukraine needs for this counteroffensive,” said one U.S. official, who was granted anonymity due to the administration’s ground rules.

While U.S. officials are careful not to appear to tell Kyiv how to fight the war, Pentagon leaders said Wednesday that the equipment and training being provided will enable Ukraine to win the war — where and when it chooses to do so.

“There is a significant ongoing effort to build up the Ukrainian military in terms of equipment, munitions and training in a variety of countries in order to enable Ukraine to defend itself,” said Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Mark Milley.

“The increased Ukrainian capability will allow the Ukrainian leadership to develop and execute a variety of options in the future, to achieve their objectives and bring this war to a successful conclusion,” Milley said.

More than 600 Ukrainians in February completed a five-week training program in Germany that included basic skills such as marksmanship, along with medical training and instruction on combined arms maneuver with U.S.-made Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Stryker armored personnel carriers. Those forces are now back on the battlefield, and a second batch of hundreds of additional soldiers are now going through the program.

Behind closed doors, U.S. officials have been pressing Kyiv to conserve artillery shells and fire in a more targeted fashion. This is a particular concern in Bakhmut, where both sides are expending munitions at a rapid pace.

“Some in the Pentagon think that they are burning up ammunition too fast,” said retired Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, former commander of U.S. Army Forces Europe. “Excuse me, they’re in a massive fight for the survival of their country against an enemy that has huge advantages in artillery ammunition and is not letting up.”

Kyiv has not yet settled on a strategy, U.S. officials said, but it has essentially two options: push south through Kherson into Crimea, or move east from its northern position and then south, cutting off the Russian land bridge. The first option is not realistic, officials said, as Russia has dug in its defenses on the east side of the Dnipro River, and Ukraine does not have the manpower for a successful amphibious operation against that kind of force. The second is more likely, officials say.

In addition to sending weapons and providing training, senior American generals hosted Ukrainian military officials in Wiesbaden, Germany this month for a set of tabletop exercises to help Kyiv wargame the next phase of the war.

President Joe Biden last month ruled out sending F-16 fighter jets, and senior U.S. officials have repeatedly said the aircrafts are not in the cards right now. But officials are working on other ways to boost the Ukrainian air force, including attempting to mount advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles on its Soviet-era MiG-29s, and assessing the skills of Ukrainian pilots.

Two Ukrainian pilots recently wrapped up an assessment at an Air National Guard base in Tucson, Arizona, for U.S. military instructors to assess what training they need to better employ the aircrafts and capabilities the West has already provided, including bombs, missiles and guidance kits. The program included simulator flights, but the pilots did not fly in American aircrafts, officials said.

An effort to mount AMRAAMs on the MiGs, if it proves successful, could also significantly increase the ability of Ukraine’s fighter pilots to take out Russian missiles, officials said.

As quickly as Ukraine is running out of munitions, Russia’s human and equipment losses are even more acute, forcing Moscow to appeal to rogue nations such as Iran for additional weapons.

“Russia remains isolated, their military stocks are rapidly depleting, the soldiers are demoralized, untrained unmotivated conscripts in convicts and their leadership is failing them,” Milley said.

Publicly, senior officials say it is up to Zelenskyy when and where to launch a new offensive, and whether to remain in Bakhmut or reposition his forces.

“President Zelensky is fighting this fight, and he will make the calls on what’s important and what’s not,” Austin said. But he noted that: “We’re generating combat power, to a degree that we believe that it will provide them opportunities to change the dynamics on the battlefield, at some point going forward, whatever point that is.”

Kerala govt to undertake health survey around Brahmapuram waste plant

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram:The Kerala government on Friday decided to conduct a health survey in the areas around Brahmapuram to assess the health-related problems caused by the smoke pollution emanating from the smouldering waste plant there.

Health Minister Veena George said the survey will include people who are immediately affected and also those who live in the surrounding areas.

“We have taken this decision in a high-level meeting today. Our community medicine experts will prepare a questionnaire. The district team will prioritise the places and our field staff will be trained to do the house-to-house survey, in order to analyse what is the real situation on the ground,” George told reporters here.

The minister said the health department has also earmarked a ‘smoke casualty’ in hospitals and has earmarked 100 beds in General Hospital, Ernakulam, and 20 beds in Taluk Hospital, Tripunithura for patients coming from the affected areas.

She said health staff has been working on the field from March 3 onwards. The minister said the health department is also conducting special medical camps in Kochi for those affected by the smoke pollution.

She said the whole focus of the government is now to overcome the crisis and after that the government, with the cooperation of all the departments concerned, would be implementing a scientific solution to permanently address this issue.

The fire broke out at the Kochi city corporation-run waste treatment plant on March 2 and the district administration of Ernakulam declared a holiday on March 6 for children in all schools in areas under Kochi corporation and the nearby municipalities and gram panchayats, as thick clouds of toxic smoke billowing from the site engulfed the city.
