“We strongly condemn Sharmila’s behaviour, rudeness and assaulting the police. Such actions should not test the police’s patience by hurting their self-esteem. The Telangana Police has the highest recognition in the country in monitoring peace and security in society and controlling crime, the press release ended.

Following the assault, Y S Sharmila was arrested on a complaint by a sub-inspector. Her two drivers were also booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police Joel Davis said police had gone to Sharmila’s house following information that she was going to the office of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) question paper leak. Since there was no permission for Sharmila’s visit to the SIT office, the police personnel were trying to explain the same to her but she assaulted police personnel.

The driver of Sharmila’s car also did not stop the car on the order of the police and hit them, injuring constable Giribabu.

Sharmila’s husband Anil Kumar later went to Jubilee Hills police station and met her.

UK Sikh temple warns after Indians lured with fake visas, job offers

    [ad_1]

London: A Sikh temple in the UK has issued warnings after fraudsters impersonating as its members tried to trick people in India by making false job and visa promises with an intent of extracting money from them, media reports said.

The Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend placed warnings on its social media pages after they were alerted to fake advertisements titled, “urgently needed in the UK”, offering free food and travel tickets for job opportunities at the Sikh temple, the Kent Online reported.

“We had somebody come into the gurdwara last week who is here but her father is in India and she wanted to see if he could come over,” General secretary of the gurdwara, Jagdev Singh Virdee, said.

    MS Education Academy

“Her father had been alerted to this ad and asked if it was a job so she came to check whether it’s genuine or not, and that’s how we first found out about it,” Virdee told Kent Online.

Following this, nearly a dozen people got in touch with the gurdwara authorities to enquire about the advertisement, which has been circulated on the internet, and asked people to get in contact via WhatsApp.

According to the news report, some have already gone through the process of exchanging passport information and personal details.

Virdee said that the fraudsters have set up a website domain and email address similar to the gurdwara’s.

“They are faking letters as if it’s a job offer from the gurdwara, then they’re saying to them, ‘you’ve had the job offer now so if you pay over so much money, then we’ll arrange a travel ticket and visa’,” Virdee told Kent Online.

“Please be aware that the following flyer is being used to fraudulently obtain funds from individuals with a false promise of securing a UK visa and job at the Gurdwara Sahib. Please do not exchange any documents or money with this individual,” the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara posted on its website.

“Though the image shows Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, Gravesend, this is no way affiliated to GNDG Gravesend,” it added.

Virdee said that the crime has been reported to both Kent Police and the National Home Office of Action Fraud.

A Kent Police spokesperson said they “received a report on March 29 that an unknown person had falsely purported to represent the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Gravesend online, in an attempt to defraud victims”.

“Officers have been in contact with representatives at the Gurdwara and are investigating the circumstances,” the spokesperson said.

Gravesend is home to more than 15,000 Sikhs.

UK’s Truss warns of Western ‘weakness’ over China in wake of Macron visit

    [ad_1]

    britain truss in trouble 90515

LONDON — Former U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss will take a not-so-subtle swipe at Emmanuel Macron over his attempt to build bridges with Beijing.

In a Wednesday morning speech to the Heritage Foundation think tank in Washington, D.C. Truss will argue that too many in the West have “appeased and accommodated” authoritarian regimes in China and Russia.

And she will say it is a “sign of weakness” for Western leaders to visit China and ask premier Xi Jinping for his support in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — just days after Macron’s own high-profile trip there.

While Truss — who left office after just six weeks as crisis-hit U.K. prime minister — will not mention Macron by name, her comments follow an interview with POLITICO in which the French president said Europe should resist pressure to become “America’s followers.”

Macron said: “The question Europeans need to answer … is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No. The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S. agenda and a Chinese overreaction.”

Macron has already been criticized for those comments by the IPAC group of China-skeptic lawmakers, which said Monday his remarks were “ill-judged.”

And Truss — who had a frosty relationship with Macron during her brief stint in office last year — will use her speech to urge a more aggressive stance toward both China and Russia.

“We’ve seen Vladimir Putin launching an unprovoked attack on a free and democratic neighbor, we see the Chinese building up their armaments and their arsenal and menacing the free and democratic Taiwan,” Truss will say according to pre-released remarks. “Too many in the West have appeased and accommodated these regimes.”

She will add: “Western leaders visiting President Xi to ask for his support in ending the war is a mistake — and it is a sign of weakness. Instead our energies should go into taking more measures to support Taiwan. We need to make sure Taiwan is able to defend itself.”

Relations between Macron and Truss’ successor Rishi Sunak have been notably warmer. The pair hailed a “new chapter” in U.K.-France ties in March, after concluding a deal on cross-Channel migration.

‘Don’t mess around with my authority’: CJI Chandrachud warns lawyer

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud everyday usually hears around 100 cases on an average seeking urgent listing before the benches of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice’s court is often packed with lawyers, who mention their matter seeking urgent hearing.

During the mentioning of the cases, the Chief Justice is very soft spoken while engaging with lawyers and has rarely lost his cool during the court proceedings. However, on Tuesday, he got irked and warned a lawyer: “Don’t mess around with my authority.”

The lawyer had mentioned a case and requested the court for an early hearing in the matter but after the bench told him that his matter will be listed on April 17, he asked the liberty to mention the matter before another bench. “I can mention before another bench, if permitted,” said the lawyer.

The bench, headed by the Chief Justice, and also comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and J.B. Pardiwala, told the lawyer not to play tricks with him and said: “You can’t mention it here and then elsewhere for an earlier date.”

The lawyer understood that his submissions have irked the Chief Justice and expressed regret and said he should be excused for his submissions.

The Chief Justice told the lawyer, “Yes, you are excused. But do not mess around with my authority”, as he proceeded with the mentioning process.

TMC’s Abhishek warns party activists against violence during rural polls

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Monday warned party activists against resorting to strong-arm tactics during the upcoming panchayat elections in West Bengal and said there should not be a repeat of the 2018 rural polls, during which widespread violence was reported, a party leader said.

Banerjee, who held a two-hour organisational meeting with the TMC’s district units on Monday via video-conferencing, said the party will not tolerate infighting during the panchayat polls and asked everyone to unitedly fight against the opposition.

“Abhishek Banerjee has said infighting will not be tolerated. The party has to put up a united fight in the panchayat polls. He has also warned against violence as such incidents tarnish the party’s image,” a TMC leader privy to the proceedings of the meeting said.

    MS Education Academy

“He said this year’s panchayat polls will be held in a peaceful atmosphere, not like 2018,” he said.

Referring to the widespread violence during the 2018 rural polls, which was followed by the party’s poor show in Lok Sabha polls next year, Banerjee said that anyone thinking that he can win elections through muscle power is wrong.

“Abhishek Banerjee said that like MLAs and MPs, those seeking to win in panchayat polls have to undergo grind. It won’t be tolerated if someone thinks he will win unopposed and tarnish the party’s image to secure his seat. He said we won fewer seats in 2019 Lok Sabha polls due to widespread violence in 2018 rural elections,” the party leader said.

Banerjee said the TMC will comfortably get an overwhelming mandate owing to the development work done in the last 12 years, he said, adding that strict scrutiny will be done while selecting candidates and those with a clean image will be given preference.

The TMC presently controls all the Zilla Parishads and most of the gram panchayats in the state.

Widespread violence, incidents of rigging and clashes with police were reported from various parts of the state during the 2018 rural polls.

The following year, TMC’s tally in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls came down from 34 to 22, and the BJP’s count went up from two to 18 in the state.

  • ‘Something is going to go boom’: IMF chief warns of a more fragile global economy

‘Something is going to go boom’: IMF chief warns of a more fragile global economy

    [ad_1]

But she said she did not think the world economy was headed toward a replay of the 2008 global financial crisis, despite problems in the banking sector that have surfaced in the United States and Switzerland.

“This is not 2008,” even though the high-profile collapse of Silicon Valley Bank last month has conjured up that concern, Georgieva said.

The 2008 crisis happened because too many financial institutions carried assets on their books that turned out to be highly overvalued. “We don’t have that now. The financial system, both banking and non-banking, is much cleaner,” Georgieva said.

During her wide-ranging remarks, Georgieva also warned about the potential negative economic impacts of the world dividing into different geopolitical camps because of frictions caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine and other forces that are fueling suspicions between the United States and China.

While it’s important for the West to stand up for its values, the frostier relations become, the more of a toll it would take on global economic growth, she said, referring to IMF research which estimates the potential loss from trade ranging from $200 billion to $7 trillion, or equal to about 0.2 percent to 7 percent of global gross domestic product.

“It makes sense to aim to be on the lower end of this cost spectrum,” Georgieva said.

The IMF chief recently returned from a trip to Beijing, where she had a chance to meet with the new economic team, including Premier Li Qiang, who took office on March 23, as part of Xi Jinping’s team for his third term as Chinese president. She described Li as “very practical, down to earth, very approachable, very clear in a commitment for China to continue to open up to be friendly to foreign investors.”

Despite the growing tensions between the U.S. and China, Georgieva said the message she received from Chinese officials was positive.

“The message that I got is that China is committed to multilateralism. They’re committed to trade that is based on rules. They’re committed to opening up the economy, as they have done so far. And they’re committed to play a constructive role vis-a-vis the developing world, including debt restructuring,” she said.

She also defended the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act against the criticism that — despite its name — it is actually fueling inflation by injecting massive amounts of government spending into the system.

“The Inflation Reduction Act is not that big on the scale of things … It is something that is going to be spent over a number of years. So it’s not going to make a big push on inflation,” she said.

Still, the current environment of higher inflation means governments should be cautious when it comes to new spending programs, she added.

Jamie Dimon warns of new economic storms ahead

    [ad_1]

    senate banking 86352

But as consumers steadily chip away at pandemic-era savings, there is a growing risk that the economy will be undercut by a combination of higher interest rates, chillier credit conditions and persistent inflation, Dimon warned.

What’s more, while the failures that caused the collapse of two large regional banks bear little resemblance to the 2008 financial crisis, they did provoke “lots of jitters in the market and will clearly cause some tightening of financial conditions as banks and other lenders become more conservative,” he wrote.

Economic uncertainty has dogged the Biden administration and Washington policymakers for more than a year. The U.S.’ swift recovery from a brief recession brought on by Covid-19 was accompanied by rocketing inflation and escalating geopolitical tensions — as well as soaring fuel and food prices — following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Economists have vacillated in their projections on whether the U.S. will be able to navigate the coming months without entering a recession. That’s something Democrats in particular are eager to avoid in the run-up to what will be a bruising 2024 election cycle.

For Dimon — the only CEO of a major bank still at the helm since the 2008 financial crisis — “2022 was not normal, economically speaking,” he wrote.

Many of the challenges that made last year such an anomaly haven’t been resolved. An unpredictable geopolitical environment, coupled with rising energy and investment costs and ballooning government debt could contribute to more inflation and much higher interest rates.

“I am often frustrated when people talk about today’s uncertainty as if it were any different from yesterday’s uncertainty. However, in this case, I believe it actually is,” he wrote.

Dimon cautioned that predicting economic conditions is akin to forecasting the weather. It’s easy to do in the short run and much harder to do in the long term.

Nevertheless, after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank, “the stock market is down and the market’s odds of a recession have increased,” he wrote.

Apologise or face Rs 100 cr defamation case, KTR warns Congress, BJP leaders

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana’s Minister for Industries and Information Technology, K.T. Rama Rao, on Tuesday served legal notice to state Congress chief Revanth Reddy and BJP president Bandi Sanjay over their allegations against him in the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) paper leak case, asking them to withdraw their allegations and tender a public apology or face defamation suit to the tune of Rs 100 crore.

KTR’s lawyer sent legal notices to Reddy and Sanjay, stating that they cast aspersions on the minister and damaged his reputation through their their ‘false’, ‘baseless’ and ‘defamatory’ statements.

The notice said that unless the leaders refrain from making such defamatory statements and tender a public apology, KTR will take forward the legal proceedings and file a defamation suit in the courts of competent jurisdiction.

Reddy and Sanjay were told that by levelling the allegation, they rendered themselves liable for both prosecution for an offence of defamation punishable under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code as defined under Section 499 of the IPC, and also made them liable for exemplary damage.

“Though the loss suffered by my client on account of your above said acts are incalculable and irreparable in terms of money, my client calculates damages at a token sum of Rs 1,00,00,00,000 (Rupees Hundred Crore only),” read the notice.

Both the leaders were asked to refrain from making any further derogatory/defamatory statements/imputations in any form against the minister and tender an unconditional apology forthwith by conducting similar press meets.

“Else my client shall be constrained to prosecute you for an offence of defamation apart from claiming damages to the tune of Rs 100 crore by initiating appropriate proceedings in the courts of competent jurisdiction holding you solely responsible for all the costs and consequences thereof,” it added.

KTR had earlier said that Reddy and Sanjay proved their ignorance by dragging the Telangana government and him into the issue of paper leakage without understanding the autonomous nature of the constitutionally constituted Public Service Commission.

Stating that there is a terrible conspiracy by both the BJP and the Congress to stall the entire recruitment process, KTR also said that Sanjay and Reddy had earlier termed Telangana government’s job notifications as a conspiracy and their comments that the youth should put aside their preparation and get into politics reflect the deceitful mentality of these leaders.
