  • UK man credits Apple Watch for warning him of undiagnosed heart condition

UK man credits Apple Watch for warning him of undiagnosed heart condition

    [ad_1]

London: A UK-based man has credited Apple Watch for pointing medics towards an undiagnosed heart condition.

Author Adam Croft, 36, from Flitwick in Bedfordshire, UK, awoke to find his Apple device had been alerting him throughout the night that his heart was in Atrial fibrillation, reports BBC.

“It’s not a feature I’d ever expected to use,” he was quoted as saying.

In an interview, Croft said that he had got up from the sofa one evening and “felt a bit dizzy” but when he got to the kitchen to get some water he “immediately felt the world closing in.”

“I managed to get down on the floor and ended up in a pool of cold sweat,” he said.

The next morning, he woke to find that his watch had been alerting him every couple of hours that his heart was in a rhythm known as Atrial fibrillation — and that he should seek medical attention.

“I called 111 (UK medical helpline) who said get to hospital within the hour,” Croft said.

Additional testing at Bedford Hospital in the UK confirmed that Croft was in Atrial fibrillation. Croft claims he would not have gone to the hospital if he hadn’t received an alert from his Apple Watch, the report said.

Moreover, the writer claimed to have previously experienced “little flutterings” of the heart that his watch had missed, but these had not occurred in months.

He had also “never had any pain or symptoms that I thought were serious.”

The report said that after testing confirmed the Atrial fibrillation, doctors put Croft on blood thinners.

He will now undergo a cardioversion procedure, which involves the use of “quick, low-energy shocks to restore a regular heart rhythm.”

Croft concluded, saying: “The watch will be staying on now.”

  • Biden’s former antitrust guru issues a warning

Biden’s former antitrust guru issues a warning

    [ad_1]

    otk103

At a gathering for global antitrust thinkers and policymakers in Brussels last week, Wu spoke about — and directly to — a movement that has hit a high-water mark under Biden. Regulators have pushed hard against corporate growth with some major cases, including the Justice Department’s new lawsuit to block JetBlue’s takeover of Spirit Airlines, and the Federal Trade Commission’s recent challenge to Microsoft’s $68 billion deal for Activision Blizzard.

Since the end of Obama’s presidency, anti-corporate sentiment has exploded in mainstream politics, helping to propel former academic critics like Wu, as well as the FTC chair Lina Khan and DOJ prosecutor Jonathan Kanter, into key enforcement roles under Biden.

But given a largely failed effort to revamp U.S. antitrust law in Congress last year, and the potential for the White House to change hands in two years, Wu and others are now worried the movement could pass without meaningful reform.

To build a more permanent constituency for stronger oversight of corporate growth, Wu suggested a “five or six” point plan that “we need to do over the next two years to institutionalize this program.”

While new legislation is one part of the plan, it is not the driver, Wu said: “I think it’s very important not to just have it focused on, you know, did Congress pass new legislation.”

He added that “Congress at this point is possibly the least democratic branch of the United States government.”

In an interview on the sidelines of the conference — held at a decidedly unpopulist hotel on Brussel’s swanky Avenue Louise — Wu elucidated his multi-pronged plan, which in a sign of its complexity jumped to seven points during the conversation.

Among the goals: institutional change within the White House.

In July 2021, President Joe Biden issued a wide-ranging executive order directing agencies across the federal government to focus on competition policy issues. As part of the order, Biden set up a Competition Council, which meets several times each year.

Wu said that for long-term stability, the competition council — currently housed within the National Economic Council — should at some point become a free-standing operation within the White House, with its own director and staff. The timing of this isn’t clear, he said, since “free-floating” groups in the White House risk losing relevance.

Also critical, he said, would be the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department racking up some wins in court.

The Justice Department scored a key victory last fall in blocking the merger of publishing giants Penguin Random House and Simon and Schuster. However it also lost challenges to a health care deal, a merger of two sugar producers and a deal between two national security contractors.

The FTC, meanwhile, recently lost its bid to block a small Meta acquisition that it believes will boost the company’s dominance in the nascent virtual reality market.

“We have to win some big cases,” Wu said. “We can either work through legislative change or win some cases, ideally both. But if neither happen, then we’re in trouble.”

The agencies have a number of pending cases, including two DOJ lawsuits against Google and an FTC lawsuit to block Microsoft’s $69 billion takeover of video game maker Activision Blizzard.

While competition policy is unlikely to revert fully back to the free market consensus that prevailed for several administrations, serious headwinds remain for Wu and his allies in the movement. The DOJ and FTC have so far struggled to win over judges in several recent cases, and dominant companies across the economy still have considerable pull with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. And despite the notes of anti-corporate populism that drive modern conservative politics, House Republican leaders have empowered antitrust skeptics in some key committee jobs.

Wu, an author and professor who is now back outside government at Columbia University Law School, offered a few further prescriptions for Biden: Keep appointing federal judges supportive of a progressive economic agenda; offer clear new agency enforcement guidance; support academic research into the effects of corporate power; and push agencies across the federal government to reflect a corporate-watchdog worldview.

New Delhi, Mar, 02: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has revealed that multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome.

Google Chrome is the most used internet browser across the globe with a massive market share. The Google backed web browsers is significantly ahead from its competitors when it comes to users. Not just desktop, even smartphone users rely on Google Chrome for day to day browsing and tasks. As most of the things are moving online, our reliability on web browsers is more than ever. We are now forced to share more and more of our personal information including banking details, date of birth, location and others. To keep the users safe, Google rolls out security updates for Chrome browser from time to time. Although tech companies recommend users to run the latest version of their browser, a few users opt to run the older for ease of use but it’s worth noting that older versions of browsers are easier to exploit. A few such vulnerabilities have been spotted in the Google Chrome browser and the Indian government has issued a warning for users of Chrome browser version prior to 110.0.5481.177.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has revealed that multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome which could be exploited by an attacker to execute arbitrary code and gain access to sensitive information on the targeted system.

According to CERT-In, the vulnerability exists in Google Chrome due to Use after free in Prompts, Web Payments API, SwiftShader, Vulkan, Video and WebRTC; Heap buffer overflow in Video & Integer overflow in PDF. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted web page. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code and gain access to sensitive information on the targeted system.

To avoid any swindling, users should apply appropriate patches as mentioned by Google.

  • TN Police on alert after intelligence warning on Islamic outfits in state

TN Police on alert after intelligence warning on Islamic outfits in state

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police is on high alert after inputs from central intelligence agencies on the presence of some Islamic outfits in the state.

After the ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI), some human rights groups were conducting programmes on human rights and police action, and central agencies have warned that such outfits were actually fronts of former PFI cadres who were trying to regroup.

Sources in the Tamil Nadu Police told IANS that these groups were trying to influence educated youths in campuses who are wedded to Islamic ideology. While many are shying away due to the ban inflicted on the PFI, some youths are being targeted by these groups.

The central agencies have warned the state police that some sleeper cells were working in Tamil Nadu supporting the activities of these ‘on paper’ organisations. Even as these groups are focusing on human rights and against “police atrocities”, agencies say that they were trying to create a dedicated support base from among the former PFI activists for further action in Tamil Nadu.

According to a senior officer of a central intelligence agency, these organisations are getting funds from outside the country and some hawala operators are being used to deliver the money. Some West Asia-based Tamil Muslims are supporting these movements and the agencies are trying to ascertain the volume of money that is being transferred.

Islamic outfits consider Tamil Nadu as a safe haven as the DMK government in the state is opposed to the Central government and is in confrontation with the Centre on many issues. While Kerala would have been a better hideout, agencies said that these organisations skipped it as the state has been on the radar of agencies and media earlier vis-a-vis Islamic outfits. Even the PFI’s earlier avatar, the NDF was formed in Kerala.

Tamil Nadu, according to central agencies, does not have that much of media hype regarding Islamic movements and hence, the Islamists are trying to develop a strong base there.

With former LTTE cadres forging alliance with international drug smuggling networks like Haji Ali network, the central agencies is trying to get inputs on whether the newly-formed groups are entering into or already entered into any connection with the former.

Several places in Tamil Nadu like Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Namakkkal, Kanniyakumari, and Theni are under the scanner of intelligence agencies and police to unearth the activities of these organisations.
