UAE: Sultan Al Neyadi becomes the first Arab to walk in space

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: United Arab Emirates (UAE’s) astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, has once again etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Arab astronaut to walk in space on Friday.

Al Neyadi exited the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday at 5.41 pm UAE time, along with NASA colleague Stephen Bowen, to begin a six-and-a-half-hour maintenance mission.

“Astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi egresses the International Space Station (ISS) starting the first Arab spacewalk in history,” Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre (MBRSC) tweeted.

    MS Education Academy

Al Neyadi and Bowen will perform several missions during their time outside the International Space Station.

These include retrieving and relocating foot restraints that astronauts can use for future spacewalks, preparing a portion of the station for future solar array installation and dismounting and retrieving a piece of communications hardware.

While spacesuits – officially known as Extravehicular Mobility Units – weigh 145 kg, astronauts cannot feel that much weight in space.

Before exiting space, Al Neyadi tweeted, “Counting down the hours until we pass through the ISS airlock into space. Wearing the spacesuit and proudly bearing the UAE flag on my arm, I will soon be undertaking the Arab world’s first spacewalk. Wish us luck!.”

Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi made history on March 2 by becoming the first Arab to join a long-term space mission that will last six months as part of SpaceX’s crew.

The mission is a historic landmark for the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, named Endeavor, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, carried the Emirati astronaut along with two NASA astronauts, Mission Commander Stephen Bowen, Pilot Warren Hoburg, and Roscosmos Cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.

  • 3,000 migrants begin walk north from southern Mexico

3,000 migrants begin walk north from southern Mexico

    [ad_1]

    mexico migrant caravan 63006

But in the past, many participants in such processions have continued on to the U.S. border, which is almost always their goal. The migrants are mainly from Central America, Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia.

Mexican authorities have used paperwork restrictions and highway checkpoints to bottle up tens of thousands of frustrated migrants in Tapachula, making it hard for them to travel to the U.S. border.

Argueta said that when migrants look for work in Tapachula, “they give us jobs, perhaps not humiliating, but the one the Mexicans don’t want to do, hard work that pays very little.”

Organizer Irineo Mújica said the migrants are demanding the dissolving of the country’s immigration agency, whose officials have been blamed — and some charged with homicide — in the March 27 fire. Mújica called the immigration detention centers “jails.”

The roots of the migrant caravan phenomenon began years ago when activists organized processions — often with a religious theme — during Holy Week to dramatize the hardships and needs of migrants. In 2018 a minority of those involved wound up traveling all the way to the U.S. border.

This year’s mass walk began well after Holy Week had ended, but Mújica, a leader of the Pueblos Sin Fronteras activist group, called it a “Viacrucis,” or stations of the cross procession, and some migrants carried wooden crosses.

“In this Viacrucis, we are asking the government that justice be done to the killers, for them to stop hiding high-ranking officials,” Mújica said in Tapachula before the long walk began. “We are also asking that these jails be ended, and that the National Immigration Institute be dissolved.”

Some migrants carried banners or crosses reading “Government Crime” and “The Government Killed Them.”

The migrants made it only as far as the town of Alvaro Obregon, about 9 miles (14 kilometers) from Tapachula, before stopping to settle down and rest for the remainder of the day, after having walked from around dawn.

The migrants stretched out under a covered athletic court and under trees at a park in Alvaro Obregon. There was no sign at the start of any police attempt to block them.

Mexican prosecutors have said they will press charges against the immigration agency’s top national official, Francisco Garduño, who is scheduled to make a court appearance April 21.

Federal prosecutors have said Garduño was remiss in not preventing the disaster in Ciudad Juarez despite earlier indications of problems at his agency’s detention centers. Prosecutors said government audits had found “a pattern of irresponsibility and repeated omissions” in the immigration institute.

The fire in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, began after a migrant allegedly set fire to foam mattresses to protest a supposed transfer. The fire quickly filled the facility with smoke. No one let the migrants out.

Six officials of the National Immigration Institute, a guard at the center and the Venezuelan migrant accused of starting the blaze are already in custody facing homicide charges.

Migrants, especially poorer ones who cannot afford to pay migrant smugglers, have often seen such mass walks, or caravans, as a way to reach the U.S. border. Successive caravans grew to massive size in 2018 and 2019 before authorities in Mexico and Central American began stopping them of highways.

The Covid-19 pandemic also played a role in quashing the caravans, as countries instituted health restrictions.

The heat and sheer effort of walking 750 miles to Mexico City usually forces migrants to start walking in the pre-dawn darkness and stop in the early afternoon in towns along the way.

Many of the migrants — some carrying infants or babies in strollers — also look to catch rides from passing trucks. In the past, authorities have sometimes allowed that to happen, and sometimes prohibited it. But sheer desperation drives many of the migrants.

Venezuelan migrant Estefany Peroez was walking with her three daughters. In Tapachula, they had been sleeping in the streets.

“We don’t have anything to eat, the authorities don’t help us, we are doing this to give my daughters a better life,” Peroez said.

Mumbai Shocker: Cop forces rape victim to walk 2 km for medical test

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, a Dalit woman lawyer – who had complained of rape, black magic practices and domestic violence by her in-laws and others – was allegedly made to walk around 2 km by a lady constable for her medical examination at a government hospital, her lawyer said here on Tuesday.

The victim had lodged complaint of rape against her NRI husband, a tantrik, her brothers-in-law and other relatives for allegedly subjecting her to repeated rape, torture and other forms of abuse since her marriage, said Advocate Nitin Satpute.

Even her complaint was registered by the Bhoiwada Police a few days ago, but only after making a lot of efforts, and she was scheduled for a medical examination at the KEM Hospital in Parel on Tuesday, he said.

“A lady constable asked her for the taxi fare, which the victim woman, a lawyer practising at the Bombay High Court, did not have. So the lady constable made her walk for 2 km from there to the BMC’s KEM Hospital for her medical,” Satpute said.

He wanted to know “where are the Nirbhaya vehicles for such rape victims”, and how could the accused be made to walk for the medical test while the accused are being taken around in police vehicles.

Satpute has brought the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV), Pravin Mundhe, and is awaiting the police response.

Durg: A woman was allegedly made to walk on burning coal and iron nails by her husband’s relatives to prove that she did not practice black magic in Chhattisgarh’s Durg town, police said on Saturday.

The woman, who sustained burns on her legs, was hospitalised after the incident that took place in Kailash Nagar area of the town on March 20, an official said.

The police have arrested two women and a man, and detained a minor boy, who claimed to be a tantrik, he said.

Talking to PTI, the victim, Mamta Nishad, a resident of Karidih locality here, claimed that her husband’s younger brother, his wife and her elder sister-in-law used to harass her by accusing her of being involved in witchcraft.

On the night of March 20, when her husband was away, the trio allegedly took her to a tantrik in Kailash Nagar and asked her to prove that she did not indulge in black magic, she alleged.

The victim claimed that the tantrik had made her walk 12 times on burning coal and nine times on a bed of iron nails. The victim informed her husband about the ordeal, following which a police complaint was lodged.

A case under sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Chhattisgarh Tonhi Pratadna Nivaran Act has been registered, City Superintendent of Police (CSP) of Durg area Vaibhav Banker said.

The three accused relatives were arrested and the tantrik, who is a minor, was detained, he said, adding that further investigation is underway.

  • Groom, family walk 28 km for wedding due to drivers’ strike in Odisha

Groom, family walk 28 km for wedding due to drivers’ strike in Odisha

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: A groom and his family members had to walk 28 kilometres to reach the bride’s village in Odisha’s Rayagada district for the wedding, as they could not arrange a vehicle due to the drivers’ strike.

They walked all night on Thursday from Sunakhandi panchayat under Kalyansinghpur block to reach Dibalapadu village where they tied the knot on Friday.

A video showing the groom and his family members including a few women walking at night went viral on social media.

“No transport was available due to the drivers’ strike. We walked all night to reach the village. We had no other option,” one of the groom’s family members said.

The marriage was solemnised on Friday morning. But the groom and his family members stayed at the bride’s house, waiting for the drivers’ association to withdraw the strike so that they can return home.

The Driver Ekta Mahasangh has launched the indefinite strike across the state from Wednesday demanding social welfare measures like insurance, pension, formation of a welfare board and others.

The strike by the drivers of commercial vehicles in Odisha was on Friday put on hold for 90 days following an assurance by the state government that all their demands would be fulfilled.

The announcement by the Drivers’ Ekta Mahasangh came barely a few hours after Chief Secretary P K Jena and DGP S K Bansak appealed to the striking drivers to withdraw the stir.

The strike by over two lakh drivers has hit the normal life for which people including office goers and tourists remained standard at different places. This has also resulted in price rise of essential commodities.

Going to carry whole nation in our hearts as we walk on red carpet: Jr NTR

Hyderabad: With the Academy Awards almost here, actor NTR Jr has landed in Los Angeles to attend the Oscars where the epic period action drama RRR’s Naatu Naatu is nominated in the ‘Best Original Song’ category after a smashing win at the Golden Globes.
