Fighting for voice of India, ready to pay any cost: Rahul post disqualification

    [ad_1]

Post his disqualification from Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Friday evening said that he is ready to pay ‘any cost’ as he is fighting for the ‘voice of India’.

“I am fighting for the voice of India. I am ready to pay any cost,” he tweeted.

He was disqualified just a day after a Surat court’s verdict sentencing the Wayanad MP to 2 years in jail in a defamation case on Thursday, filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

“Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the Lok Sabha secretariat said in a notification issued on Friday.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that the party will not be ‘intimidated’ or ‘silenced’ by the decision to disqualify the Wayanad MP.

“We will fight this battle both legally and politically. We will not be intimidated or silenced. Instead of a JPC into the PM-linked Adani MahaMegaScam, @RahulGandhi stands disqualified. Indian Democracy Om Shanti,” Jairam Ramesh tweeted.

Leaders of several opposition parties on Friday spoke up in support of Rahul Gandhi post his disqualification as a Lok Sabha MP due to his conviction in a criminal defamation case from 2019.

  • Kerala’s first transgender lawyer wants to be voice of the poor, marginalised

Kerala’s first transgender lawyer wants to be voice of the poor, marginalised

    [ad_1]

Kochi: A physics graduate, an insurance agent-cum-law student and finally a full fledged lawyer, this is the journey of Kerala’s first transgender advocate who now aims to use her legal acumen to ensure justice for the poor and marginalised.

The journey was not easy and there were obstacles, but her positive attitude and disregard for negativity propelled her forward to achieve the goal of becoming a lawyer — a noble profession according to Padma Lakshmi, Kerala’s first transgender advocate.

“I ignore all forms of negativity, be it people or their comments. I focus on the positive. I believe that is one of my advantages.
“If I focus on the negativity, I will have time only for that and will never move forward in life,” she told PTI.

She also worked as an insurance agent for a private insurance company and LIC to meet her medical and education costs, which included the voluminous legal textbooks.

However, she is also more than happy and eager to share these books and her knowledge with anyone who wants them.
She slowly stopped working as an insurance agent after joining as a trainee with her senior — advocate K V Bhadrakumari — so that she could focus better on her legal career, Lakshmi said.

Lakshmi, who was interning with advocate Bhadrakumari since last November, said that her senior helped create a space for her among the big-wigs of the legal profession in the Kerala High Court.

“I am very grateful to her for that,” she said and added that her senior always tells her that the Constitution is our biggest weapon.
Of the over 1,500 law graduates who got enrolled on Sunday, March 19, Lakshmi was the first one to get her enrollment certificate.

“It was made possible by the members of the Kerala Bar Council. I am happy to be enrolled here as many big-wigs of the legal profession are part of this council and now so am I,” she said.

On her plans for the future, she said that she neither intends to pursue masters in law nor try for the judicial service presently.
“Taking up cases where there has been violation of fundamental rights and fighting to ensure justice for the marginalised, that is my plan and that is my desire right now,” she said.

There are many like Vishwanathan from Wayanad or Madhu from Palakkad and I would like to fight for them, she said.
Vishwanathan (46), a tribal, allegedly hung himself outside the Kozhikode medical college hospital, on February 11, where his wife was admitted for delivery.

He took the extreme step after he was accused of theft and roughed up by some persons, his relatives alleged in their complaint to police.

Similar was the case of Madhu, another tribal man, who was beaten to death in 2018 by some persons for allegedly stealing food articles.

Moreover, as a budding lawyer there is a lot for her to learn about court proceedings and she intends to imbibe all that knowledge, work hard and thereafter, fight to ensure justice for those who are poor and voiceless, she said.

“I have a lot to learn about managing clients and about the law. I have a lot of responsibilities. Also, I need to prove myself through my actions. For that hardwork and honesty are the tools that I need to hone.”

Her family — a mother who is an advocate’s clerk and a father who used to work at Cochin Shipyard Ltd — has been a great source of support in her journey.

“They always encouraged me to pursue my dreams with courage. So why should I fear anything?” she asked.
Meanwhile, state Law Minister P Rajeev and Higher Education Minister R Bindu congratulated Lakshmi on social media for her achievement.

“Congratulations to Padma Lakshmi who overcame all the difficulties in her life and enrolled as the first transgender lawyer in Kerala. May advocate Padma Lakshmi’s life inspire more people from the transgender community to enter the legal profession,” Rajeev said in a Facebook post.

Bindu took to Twitter to convey her best wishes to the budding lawyer.
“It is a matter of immense pride that Padma Lakshmi’s name will now be etched into the history of Kerala, as the state’s first transgender lawyer.

“No doubt she has faced obstacles galore in this journey. But she persevered, never letting any naysayer deter or weigh her down,” she tweeted.

She too expressed hope that Padma Lakshmi’s success would inspire many more trans persons in the state to enter the legal profession.

While Padma Lakshmi is the first transgender lawyer from Kerala, the first trans advocate in the country was Satyashri Sharmila from Tamil Nadu who got enrolled in 2018.

  • Wuhan welfare protests escalate as hundreds voice anger over health insurance cuts

Wuhan welfare protests escalate as hundreds voice anger over health insurance cuts

    [ad_1]

Crowds of hundreds of older people took to the streets in the Chinese cities of Wuhan and Dalian on Wednesday in escalating protests against changes to the public health insurance system.

The protests were sparked by cuts to monthly allowances paid to retirees under China’s vast public health insurance system. The changes, gradually introduced since 2021, come as local government finances are strained following years of strict and costly zero-Covid policies.

On Wednesday, a crowd of demonstrators rallied in front of a park in the central Chinese city of Wuhan for the second time in a week. Video posted on social media showed security guards by the entrance to a popular scenic spot, Zhongshan park, forming a human chain to prevent more demonstrators from entering. Crowds pushed against officers, while some videos showed people singing the “Internationale”. The song, also an anthem of the Chinese Communist party, has been a feature of some recent protests and been used to accuse the party of straying from its origins.

A separate protest, comprising hundreds of retirees, was also staged outside Wuhan’s city hall. Pictures shared on social media appeared to show local officials meeting some of those demonstrators for negotiations.

Hundreds of people also rallied on Wednesday morning over the same issue more than 1,200km away, in the north-eastern city of Dalian, a witness confirmed to Agence France-Presse.

“Give me back my medical insurance money,” the crowd shouted in one video, which the news agency geolocated to the city’s Renmin square, where a number of local government buildings are situated.

In another video, a large column of police are seen guarding the city government building.

Total numbers of Wednesday’s protesters ranged from hundreds to thousands, across media reports. At last week’s protests witnesses reported some participants being taken away by police. Local residents at the time said the retirees had threatened to take to the streets again on 15 February unless the government responded immediately.

According to social media posts collated by a protest monitoring account, some public institutions in central Wuhan were closed for the day on Wednesday. There also appeared to be an increase in the number of community activities organised for the city’s older people, and some residents alleged security officers were preventing them from leaving their residential buildings, citing “public health insurance reasons”.

“These old people can come out [to protest] not only for themselves but also for future generations,” said one supporter on social media. “Medical and social insurance without a contract is a Ponzi scheme of CCP. If you don’t go on the streets today, your children and grandchildren will become slaves for generations.”

Another said: “If you reduce the basic living allowance for the people, who would trust the government in the younger generation?”

The protests in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, have been exacerbated by the fact that its officials are largely unaffected by the changes, analysts have said.

“Civil servants and public institution staff are still entitled to subsidised medical assistance insurance on top of the employee health insurance scheme,” political risk consultancy SinoInsider said in a note.

“Senior and retired CCP (Chinese Communist party) cadres have long had access to generous medical treatments at public expense and without having to pay for basic healthcare insurance.”

Local governments could “compromise and meet protester demands early” rather than engage in a drawn-out dispute, the firm added.

On Thursday, China’s state planner and finance ministry announced policies aimed at stimulating spending on housing and unlocking consumer savings that have been built up during the pandemic.

The announcements, reported by state media, also included measures to help older people, improve childcare services and encourage couples to have more children.

Localised protests are not rare in China, but a spate of rallies across multiple cities last year with a shared focus on Covid restrictions and their social impact rattled authorities, who worked quickly to shut them down and arrest participants. There was also speculation that the sudden lifting of zero-Covid restrictions just weeks later was also connected to the protests.

Kareena, Saif, Jaideep, Masaba to voice Hindi ‘Marvel’s Wastelanders’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan and her husband Saif Ali Khan are coming together for a new project, and it is the Hindi adaptation of the audio series ‘Marvel’s Wastelanders’.

While Kareena has lent her voice to the character of Black Widow (Helen Black), Saif has voiced the character of Star-Lord. However, their stories will have different arcs and seasons and the narratives won’t intersect.

The first season of the series will be released in the form of Saif-led ‘Marvel’s Wastelanders: Star-Lord’ which will be released on audio streaming platform Audible on June 28, 2023.

While talking about his association with Audible and his experience narrating his character, actor Saif Ali Khan said: “Star-Lord, a beloved and roguishly charming hero’s story is an against-all-odds story of survival and redemption.”

“It’s been a lot of fun to bring this iconic role and story alive through my voice – Star-Lord’s journey in Marvel’s Wastelanders will be imagined differently by every person who hears it. It’s a great creative collaboration with the entire team.”

Talking about her excitement about joining the Marvel Audio Universe, Kareena Kapoor Khan said: “I am incredibly excited to play Marvel’s Wastelanders’ Black Widow. In this series, the world is in disarray and she has to overcome personal tragedies to find the strength and resilience to fight back and help restore order.”

“As you listen and the story unfolds in your imagination, you’ll feel as if you’re fighting to save the future of earth with us. To be a part of such a beloved franchise and to bring this iconic character to life in Hindi is an honour and I can’t wait for this amazing journey to begin.”

The other cast members of the Hindi adaptation of the audio epic include Sharad Kelkar who voices Wolverine, Ashish Vidyarthi as Doctor Doom, Vrajesh Hirjee, Jaideep Ahlawat as Hawkeye and Masaba Gupta voicing the character of Lisa Cartwright.

The franchise features the beloved heroes as they fight to regain order and justice in a post-apocalyptic future where Marvel’s super villains have been in power for more than 30 years after a tragic event that killed nearly all super heroes.

The six-season audio epic belongs to the house of Marvel and promises a fun ride from start to finish.

WhatsApp introduces ‘Voice Status’, ‘Status Reactions’ features

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp on Tuesday announced new features coming to its status, including ‘Voice Status’, ‘Status Reactions’ and much more.

The new features have started rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks, the company said in a statement.

The ‘Voice Status’ feature allows users to record and share voice messages for up to 30 seconds on WhatsApp status.

On the other hand, ‘Status Reactions’ allows users to give a quick and easy way to respond to status updates from their friends and close contacts.

“This was the #1 feature users wanted, following the launch of Reactions last year. You can now quickly reply to any status by swiping up and tapping on one of eight emojis. You can of course still reply to a status with text, voice message, stickers and more,” the platform said.

The company also introduced other features including ‘Private Audience Selector’, ‘Status Profile Rings for New Updates’ and ‘Link Previews on Status’.

With the ‘Private Audience Selector’, users can update their privacy settings per status so that they can choose who views their status each time they update it.

Moreover, the most recent audience selection will be used as the default for the users’ next status.

“With the new status profile ring you’ll never miss a status from a loved one. This ring will be present around your contact’s profile picture whenever they share a status update. It will be visible in the chat lists, group participant lists, and contact info,” the platform said.

Now when users post a link on their status, they will see a visual preview of the link content, similar to when users send a message, thanks to the ‘Link Previews on Status’ feature.

“Status is a popular way to share ephemeral updates with friends and close contacts on WhatsApp. They disappear in 24 hours and may include photos, videos, GIFs, text, and more,” the company said.

“Just like your personal chats and calls, your WhatsApp status is protected by end-to-end encryption so you can share privately and securely,” it added.
