Ukraine crisis: Putin visits Russia-occupied Mariupol

    [ad_1]

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has paid a surprise visit to Mariupol — the Ukrainian port city captured by Russian forces, the media reported. The visit is believed to be Putin’s first to a newly-occupied Ukrainian territory.

In a video, Putin is seen driving a car through streets at night and speaking to people, the BBC reported on Sunday. It was, however, not known when the footage was taken.

During the visit, the Russian President is also reported to have met top military commanders in Rostov-on-Don city.

Putin travelled to Mariupol by helicopter. In the video, he is in the car with Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, who explains how the city is being rebuilt, Tass news agency reported.

Putin also appears to visit the Philharmonic Hall, which was used to stage trials of defenders of the Azovstal iron and steel plant, a huge industrial complex where Ukrainian troops held out before eventually surrendering.

Mariupol has been under Russian occupation for more than 10 months after being devastated in one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the conflict.

Ukraine said more than 20,000 people were killed there.

UN analysis estimates that 90 per cent of the buildings were damaged and around 3,50,000 people were forced to leave, our of a pre-war population of about 5,00,000.

A group of local residents has told the BBC that “Russia is conducting an expensive campaign to rebuild the city and win over the hearts and minds of its people”.

The purpose is to assimilate Mariupol and make it Russia’s own. Russian authorities say 3,00,000 people are now living there.

The trip also came ahead of a planned visit to Moscow by Chinese President Xi Jinping this week, expected to provide a major diplomatic boost to Putin in his confrontation with the West.

Putin arrived in Mariupol by helicopter and then drove himself around the city’s “memorial sites,” concert hall and coastline, Russian news reports said, without specifying exactly when the visit took place. They said Putin also met with local residents in the city’s Nevskyi district.

Speaking to the state RIA agency Sunday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnulin made clear that Russia was in Mariupol to stay. He said the government hoped to finish the reconstruction of its blasted downtown by the end of the year.

“People have started to return. When they saw that reconstruction is under way, people started actively returning,” Khusnulin told RIA.

When Moscow fully captured the city in May, an estimated 100,000 people remained out of a prewar population of 450,000. Many were trapped without food, water, heat or electricity. Relentless bombardment left rows upon rows of shattered or hollowed-out buildings.

Mariupol’s plight first came into focus with a Russian airstrike on a maternity hospital on March 9 last year, less than two weeks after Russian troops moved into Ukraine. A week later, about 300 people were reported killed in the bombing of a theater that was serving as the city’s largest bomb shelter. Evidence obtained by the AP last spring suggested that the real death toll could be closer to 600.

A small group of Ukrainian fighters held out for 83 days in the sprawling Azovstal steel works in eastern Mariupol before surrendering, their dogged defense tying down Russian forces and coming to symbolize Ukrainian tenacity in the face of Moscow’s aggression.

Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a move that most of the world denounced as illegal, and moved on last September to officially claim four regions in Ukraine’s south and east as Russian territory, following referendums that Kyiv and the West described as a sham.

SRINAGAR: Former chief minister and the president of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday visited the Soibug area in central Kashmir’s Budgam district to express condolences to the family of a 30-year-old woman who was brutally murdered a week ago.

Mufti while expressing grief and outrage over the incident said, “This is a heart-wrenching incident, I have no words to express my grief. The entire area has been horrified. The police have done a great job and I hope the case will be fast tracked,” she said, adding that the culprit should hanged so that this kind of incident is it not repeated again.

Raising concerns about the rising violence against women, she said, “There has been a lot of violence against women, and it is high time to act so as to prevent things from getting worse.”

Mufti also raised the issue of domestic violence, which has prompted some women to commit suicide. “Domestic violence occurs in our households as well, and some women have killed themselves out of fear. Why are women killed so often? Why was this young woman killed?” she asked while urging the police to “act quickly to provide justice to the family.” (KNO)

  • Scholz voices concern on Israel overhaul as Netanyahu visits

Scholz voices concern on Israel overhaul as Netanyahu visits

    [ad_1]

Berlin: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced concern about the Israeli government’s planned overhaul of the country’s judicial system as he hosted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, offering praise for efforts by Israel’s president to seek a “broad basic consensus.”

Netanyahu met with German leaders in Berlin the day after Israeli President Isaac Herzog unveiled a compromise proposal for overhauling the legal system, an approach that Netanyahu rejected.

Lower-level German officials already had voiced concern about the Israeli government’s plan, which would allow parliament to overturn Supreme Court decisions and give Netanyahu’s parliamentary coalition the final say over all judicial appointments.

Germany is a close ally of Israel in Europe and has tended to refrain from strong public criticism of its government.

“As close friends of Israel with shared democratic values, we are following this debate very closely, and I cannot hide the fact that we’re following it with great concern,” Scholz said at a news conference alongside Netanyahu. “The independence of the judiciary is a precious democratic asset. We agree on that.”

“It is good and valuable that President Herzog talked to a large of actors in society in order to counter a further polarization of Israel,” Scholz said. “Allow me to add that I think this search for a broad basic consensus is right and important.”

Of Herzog’s suggestion, Scholz said: “As friends of Israel, we would like the last word not to have to have been spoken on this proposal.”

Netanyahu showed no sign of being swayed. “Israel was, is and will remain a liberal society,” he said.

The prime minister argued that appeals for discussions with the Israeli opposition were “met with complete refusal” and that “there is a desire to reach a moment of crisis, perhaps a governmental breakdown, a search for new elections.”

“If that continues, that’s regrettable, but we will do whatever we think is the right thing to achieve something that corrects the imbalance that exists today between the branches of government and yet, at the same time, could over time be accepted as the best solution for Israel in line with my principles of keeping Israel a liberal, balanced democracy,” Netanyahu said.

The leader of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, met Netanyahu himself earlier Thursday. Schuster said he voiced concern to the prime minister that “his government is increasingly dividing Israeli society and is squandering confidence in democratic Israel,” German news agency dpa reported.

Around 500 Israelis protested at Berlin’s landmark Brandenburg Gate, waving Israeli flags, singing and holding up banners against Netanyahu’s visit.

“He is destroying our democracy for the sake of staying out of jail,” Nasich Philip, a project manager in construction who moved to Berlin nine years ago, said. “He is sacrificing the whole country to protect himself and his family.”

Germany and Israel share concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities. Netanyahu has threatened military action against Iran’s nuclear program as it enriches uranium closer to weapons-grade levels.

Germany is one of the world powers that entered a 2015 deal with Tehran to address concern about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The agreement unraveled after then-President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States.

“The Jewish state will do everything necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, period,” Netanyahu said, without giving details.

“Our hope is that we will ultimately succeed in preventing this with a diplomatic solution,” Scholz said.

On Friday, Sarpanch Navya explained her ordeal at a press conference.

“A BRS MLA called me and directed me to “fall into line”, otherwise we will not cooperate. There is also a woman involved in this. It is not my culture to defame a woman and thus I cannot reveal her name,” Navya told the media.

  • Von der Leyen, Trudeau tout ‘green alliance’ before Biden visits

Von der Leyen, Trudeau tout ‘green alliance’ before Biden visits

    [ad_1]

    britain northern ireland 10920

“It’s to create good and well paying jobs, to promote growth, to boost our energy and climate cooperation across the board,” von der Leyen told reporters in Kingston, Ontario on Tuesday.

“China produces 98 percent of Europe’s supplies of rare earths,” she said. “Europe needs to de-risk this dependency.”

Canada is a minerals-rich country and major global producer of potash, palladium, niobium and uranium. The slow pace of regulatory hurdles, historically, hasn’t been a selling point for investors to bankroll Canadian projects.

Talks are also underway for a memorandum of understanding on hydrogen. Von der Leyen said Europe is facing a time crunch in its bid to import 10 million tons of the fuel by 2030.

Interest in sourcing hydrogen from Canada follows an agreement with Germany last year to begin exporting the fuel in 2025. Trudeau has previously said the ambitious goal is “doable,” despite the lack of export facilities in Atlantic Canada.

The green deal pledge comes on the eve of von der Leyen’s arrival in Washington to meet with President Joe Biden. There, her tall task will be to convince Biden to extend the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) tax breaks to the European Union’s electric vehicle industry.

Von der Leyen’s visit is her first to Canada since her election as president in 2019. Her five-year term will end next year with Europe’s elections. Biden, in turn, is expected to visit Canada later this month for his first in-person visit since taking office.

More details about the EU-Canada green alliance are expected later this year at the High Level Dialogue on Climate.

Partnering with Canada, a beneficiary of the IRA’s North American content rules for EVs, is one step to advance trade links as wealthy countries look to decarbonize and develop industries to displace reliance on Russia and China.

The impact of the IRA has also been the subject of study by a parliamentary committee in Ottawa where concerns about its massive $369-billion package for clean tech has fueled concerns about protectionism and fears that investments will be pulled away from western allies.
