    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church here on Sunday on the occasion of Easter.

An official video showed the prime minister being welcomed at the church and him greeting priests and worshippers on the holy day.

Modi later joined them as they offered prayers. He also planted a tree on the premises.

    MS Education Academy

After the visit, Modi tweeted, “Today, on the very special occasion of Easter, I had the opportunity to visit the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Delhi. I also met spiritual leaders from the Christian community.”

The prime minister’s rare visit to the church is imbued with political significance as well, as the ruling BJP has been actively wooing Christians.

Modi in his recent speeches has underlined the minority community’s growing connect with the BJP by citing the party’s poll successes in Goa and recently, in the two northeastern states of Nagaland and Meghalaya. These states have a large Christian population.

Modi has underscored his government’s commitment to the mottos of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’ and development for all without any discrimination.

The BJP is looking for support from the community in Kerala, the state with their largest population in the country, as it works to make a fresh headway there after tasting little success in previous elections.

The party’s leaders in the state also met with community leaders on Sunday.

Anil Antony, son of senior Kerala Congress leader A K Antony, a Christian, joined the BJP a few days back.

Earlier in the day, Modi tweeted, “Happy Easter! May this special occasion deepen the spirit of harmony in our society. May it inspire people to serve society and help empower the downtrodden. We remember the pious thoughts of Lord Christ on this day.”

PM’s repeated visits show how weak BJP is in Karnataka: Congress

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Congress claimed on Saturday that the repeated visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the southern state only show how weak the BJP is in Karnataka, which goes to the polls on May 10.

Speaking to mediapersons, Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said that the people of the state have taken a decision to overthrow the BJP government, which is known to the saffron party leaders and that is why the central leaders of the BJP are repeatedly visiting the state.

“Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of the country, and he can come down to the state as many times as he wishes. But he is repeatedly visiting Karnataka now for campaigning, which shows how weak the BJP is in the state,” Shivakumar said.

    MS Education Academy

“By making all these attempts, the BJP leaders seem to have already conceded defeat. The voters of the state are intelligent and they are going to change the government, no matter who visits the state,” he added.

The Congress leader also claimed that since they are not able to draw the masses, the BJP leaders are roping in film actors.

“There is a conspiracy to use the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against the Congress candidates. The police are also acting as BJP’s agents. I have asked to prepare a list of such officers. They can do this for only 40 days,” Shivakumar said.

  • US Vice President Kamala Harris visits her Indian grandfather’s house in Zambia

US Vice President Kamala Harris visits her Indian grandfather’s house in Zambia

    [ad_1]

Washington: US Vice President Kamala Harris remembered her maternal grandfather P V Gopalan and visited his family house in Zambia’s capital Lusaka where he lived as an Indian Foreign Service official in the 1960s during her trip to the African country.

Born in Chennai in 1911, Gopalan was an advisor to first President of Zambia Kenneth Kaunda and served as Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the 1960s.

“My visit to Zambia has a special significance for me, as many of you know, and for my family. As you know, I visited Zambia, Mr President, as a young girl when my grandfather worked here,” Harris told reporters in Lusaka at a joint news conference with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema.

“In 1966, shortly after Zambia’s independence, he came to Lusaka to serve as a director of relief measures and refugees. That was his title. He served as an advisor to Zambia’s first president, Kenneth Kaunda. And he was an expert on refugee resettlement,” she said.

While in Lusaka in the 1960s, Gopalan lived at 16 Independence Avenue, where 58-year-old Harris visited as a little girl.

Though the numbering of addresses has since changed and the location was ultimately identified using plot numbers in public records and land surveys, according to a White House official.

“I remember my time here fondly. I was a child, so it is the memory of a child. But I remember being here and just how it felt, the warmth and the excitement that was present,” Harris said.

She said she spoke to her aunt recently who reminded her of the relationships she made while working at a hospital in Lusaka.

“So, from my family and from all of us, we extend our greetings and hello to everyone here,” Harris added.

Gopalan was deputed to the government of Zambia as the Director of Relief Measures and Refugees in January 1966 by the Indian government.

To perform these duties, he relinquished his role as the head of the office of the joint secretary in the Ministry of Rehabilitation.

He resumed charge of the Office of the Joint Secretary to the government of India in the Ministry of Rehabilitation in July 1969, on reversion from the government of Zambia.

He helped Zambia manage an influx of refugees from Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

After much effort, the US embassy in Lusaka, while working with the Vice President’s office, located the spot they believe Gopalan lived. It was the land where his house was, not the structure which is no longer there, the White House official said.

The US Embassy in Lusaka pursued research to identify the location of this home, including going through public records, engaging with Zambian and Indian authorities, and speaking with those who worked in the Zambian government at the time, said the official on condition of anonymity.

“In addition, members of the Vice President’s family provided recollections about the home, which aided the search. After much work by the Embassy and dead-ends in the search, the Embassy identified this location only a few days ago while the Vice President was in Accra, Ghana,” the official said.

Ultimately, the Zambian Ministry of Lands, with assistance from others, identified 16 Independence Ave as the Gopalan family home, as recorded in a public lands document dated March 9, 1967.

The property now belongs to Madison Group, a Zambian group of companies that include Madison General Insurance and Madison Financial.

Harris, the daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican father, is the first Black and the first Asian-American woman vice president of the US. She made history when she was sworn in as the 49th US vice president on January 20, 2021.

Her mother Shyamala Gopalan came to the US from Chennai to study science, specifically endocrinology and complex mechanisms of cancer.

Her father Donald grew up in Jamaica, where he became a national scholar and studied economics. Harris was born in Oakland, California.

Probe ordered into fake PMO official’s visits to J-K

    [ad_1]

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday ordered a probe into the visits of conman Kiran Patel — who used to pose as a ‘PMO official’, to the union territory, an official said.

An order issued by the Home Department appointed Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, divisional commissioner (Kashmir) as the inquiry officer who has been asked to submit his report within a week’s time.

The order reads: “Sanction is hereby accorded to the appointment of Vijay Kumar Bidhuri as Inquiry Officer to inquire into the various aspects related to the visits of Kiran Patel to Kashmir during the past months and security arrangements made thereof.

“The Inquiry Officer shall identify the lapses on the part of the Officers/ Officials concerned and submit a detailed report within one week,” the order read.

Kiran Patel was on his third visit to the Kashmir Valley when he was arrested by police from a 5-star hotel in Srinagar on March 2.

The police have told the court: “He has prima facie forged and manufactured some documents including some visiting cards on the basis of which he has defrauded not only a single or group of person but extremely elevated class of the society, including high officials of the civil administration and police authorities.

“He succeeded in getting Z Category Security, bullet proof vehicle and enjoyed five-star protocol brazenly for a considerable period of time.

“The documents, visiting cards and cell phone of the accused person have been sent for FSL examination, on the basis of which the alleged crime has been commuted, however the FSL examination report has not been received by the investigating agency,” the police said.

The report also said that investigation conducted so far has suggested that the accused has visited most sensitive locations and areas of the Kashmir Valley, which are highly protected and extremely sensitive as far as the present security scenario of Kashmir is concerned.

“This aspect of the matter has necessarily to be probed thoroughly by the investigating machinery as to how and with what motive and object the accused visited these locations and areas.

“There is enough material available on the file, suggestive of the fact that while meeting different and variety of people and conducting meeting with highly elevated officials of civil administration and police, the accused may have received hefty amount for different purpose which areas seem not to have been investigated so far.

“Further no recoveries have been made by the investigating agency so far, hence a detailed and thorough investigating is also required to be conducted as far as this area of the matter is concerned.

“Meticulous and careful perusal of case diary file and material available on record reflects that during this all period some more persons have remained closely connected with the accused person whose nexus with the accused person requires proper investigation,” the police report said.

  • Conman Issue: Govt Orders Inquiry Into Visits Of ‘Shri Kiran Patel’ To Kashmir

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Mar 29: The Government on Wednesday ordered a time-bound inquiry into the various aspects related to the visits of “Shri Kiran Patel” who conned the security establishment in Jammu and Kashmir into believing him to be a PMO official and enjoyed five star protocol “brazenly” for a considerable period of time prior to his arrest earlier this month.

“Sanction is hereby accorded to the appointment of Shri Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, IAS, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, as Inquiry Officer to inquire into the various aspects related to the visits of Shri Kiran Patel to Kashmir during the past months and security arrangements made thereof,” reads an order by J&K’s Home Department. “The Inquiry Officer shall identify the lapses on the part of the Officers/ Officials concerned and submit a detailed report within one week,” the order, a copy of which lies with GNS, reads.

Patel was on his third visit to the Kashmir Valley when he was nabbed by security officials from a five-star hotel in Nishat area of Srinagar on March 2.

As per the police report, Patel has prima facie forged and manufactured some documents including some visiting cards on the basis of which he has defrauded not only a single or group of person but “extremely elevated class of the society including high officials of the civil administration and police authorities.” At the end of the day, the police said, Patel succeeded in getting Z Category Security, bullet proof vehicle and enjoyed five star protocol “brazenly” for a considerable period of time.

“The documents, visiting cards and cell phone of the accused person have been sent for FSL examination, on the basis of which alleged Crime has been commuted, however the FSL examination report has not been received by the investigating agency,” the police had said in a report to court.

The police further said that investigation conducted so far has suggested that the accused has visited most “sensitive locations and areas of Kashmir Valley” which are highly protected and extremely sensitive as far as present security scenario of Kashmir is concerned. Hence, the police said, this aspect of the matter has necessarily to be probed thoroughly by the investigating machinery as to how and with what motive and object the accused visited these locations and areas.

“There is enough material available on the file, suggestive of the fact that while meeting different and variety of people and conducting meeting with highly elevated officials of civil administration and police the accused may have received hefty amount for different purpose which areas seem not to have been investigated so far,” the police had said, adding, “further no recoveries have been made by the investigating agency so far, hence a detailed and thorough investigating is also required to be conducted as far as this area of the matter is concerned.”

Furthermore, the police had said, the meticulous and careful perusal of case diary file and material available on record reflects that during this all period some more persons have remained closely connected with the accused person whose nexus with the accused person requires proper investigation. 5.

As far as “sophisticated and well planned criminal activities of the accused (Patel) are concerned”, the police said, a well knit network of the accused cannot be ruled out in terms of investigation so far conducted.

“More surprisingly the accused has posed to be Additional Director (Strategy and Campaign) PMO, New Delhi which in normal course has not to be taken lightly. Hence again a thorough investigation is required to be conducted as to what could be the other possible connection of the accused which can be checked, scanned and controlled at the initial stage, so that an ugly situation is not again erupted,” the police had said.
