    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi arrived here on Tuesday on a three-day state visit with a focus on enhancing bilateral ties in a range of areas including agriculture, digital domain and trade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sisi will hold wide-ranging talks on Wednesday following which the two sides are expected to ink half a dozen agreements to boost ties in a number of areas.

“Warm welcome to India, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Your historic visit to India as Chief Guest for our Republic Day celebrations is a matter of immense happiness for all Indians. Look forward to our discussions tomorrow. @AlsisiOfficial,” Modi tweeted.

The 68-year-old influential Arab leader will grace the Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest.

Minister of State for External Affairs RajKumar Ranjan Singh welcomed President Sisi at the airport.

“This visit will further deepen the long-standing India-Egypt friendship,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Twitter.

Sisi is accompanied by a high-level delegation.

The Egyptian president previously visited India in October 2015 to participate in the third India-Africa Forum Summit which was followed by his state visit in September 2016.

This is for the first time that the President of Egypt has been invited as the chief guest to India’s Republic Day celebrations. A military contingent from the Egyptian Army will also participate in the Republic Day parade.

Sisi will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday ahead of his talks with Modi.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will also call on Sisi.

“The forthcoming visit of President Sisi is expected to further strengthen and deepen the time-tested partnership between India and Egypt,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Saturday.

India is keen to further expand ties with Egypt, a key player in the politics of both the Arab world as well as Africa. It is also seen as a major gateway to markets in Africa and Europe.

The MEA said the multifaceted relationship between the two countries is based on shared cultural values, commitment to foster economic growth, collaboration in the fields of defence and security and convergence on regional and global issues.

The bilateral trade between the two sides has been on an upswing in the last few years.

The bilateral trade between India and Egypt achieved a “record high” of USD 7.26 billion in 2021-22, according to the MEA.

More than 50 Indian companies have invested around USD 3.15 billion in diverse sectors of the Egyptian economy, including chemicals, energy, textile, garment, agri-business and retail.

India issues visa to 249 Pakistani pilgrims to visit Ajmer Sharif

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: India has issued visas to 249 Pakistani pilgrims to visit the tomb of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer, Rajasthan, an official said on Sunday.

Citing a spokesperson of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, the state-run Radio Pakistan reported that 488 applicants had applied for visas, but only 249 pilgrims were granted visas.

The spokesperson said that all the pilgrims have been informed to reach Lahore from where they will embark on a journey to India on Tuesday.

He said six officials were deputed to take care of the pilgrims during their stay in India. However, only one of them was granted permission to go with the pilgrims, he added.

The two counties allow pilgrims to travel under the Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines, signed by India and Pakistan in September of 1974.

However, it has been witnessed that the two sides routinely reject visas of pilgrims on various grounds.

Turkey cancels visit of Swedish minister over burning of Holy Quran

    [ad_1]

Ankara: Turkey has cancelled the upcoming visit of Swedish Defense Minister Pal Johnson to the country, in response to Stockholm police giving permission to burn a copy of the Holy Quran during a planned protest in the Swedish capital.

Johnson was planning to visit Turkey on January 27 at the invitation of his Turkish counterpart, as the Scandinavian country hopes to urge Turkey to ratify its bid to join NATO.

“Swedish Defense Minister Pal Johnson’s visit to Turkey on January 27 lost its significance, so we cancelled the visit,” Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said, Anadolu Agency reported.

On Saturday, January 21, Swedish right-wing leader Rasmus Paludan burned a copy of the Holy Quran, with the permission of the Swedish government.

Paludan set fire to the Holy Quran surrounded by the police with a lighter after a long sermon, which lasted about an hour, in which he attacked Islam and immigration in Sweden.

On Friday, January 20, Ankara summoned Sweden’s ambassador and informed him of its condemnation in the strongest terms.

This is the second time in a few days that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara. The first took place after a video clip was broadcast last week showing a hanged doll in the image of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

  • Boris Johnson hogs spotlight with Ukraine visit

Boris Johnson hogs spotlight with Ukraine visit

    [ad_1]

    russia ukraine war britain 75625

Boris Johnson leaped back into the spotlight on Sunday after videos of the former British prime minister visiting Ukraine were posted online, in a move likely to irritate the Conservative government back home.

Posts on Twitter show Johnson meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and visiting the war-struck towns of Bucha and Borodyanka near Kyiv.

Johnson is a member of the British parliament but doesn’t hold any official role in the government led by Rishi Sunak.

The former prime minister was removed by his own Conservative party last year amid collapsing support in the polls and an administration dogged by a seeming never-ending series of scandals. He is now also facing questions about his financial dealings.

But in Ukraine, Johnson is regarded as a hero for his steadfast support of the country after its invasion by Russia in February 2022. He was awarded an honorary “Citizen of Kyiv” medal from the city’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko at Davos last week.

The Ukraine visit — which according to the Telegraph was not announced in advance nor arranged via the British embassy — could be seen as a move to undermine Sunak. Johnson, a seasoned politician, is known for his crowd-pleasing stunts and rhetorical flourishes. Though he was removed by his fellow Conservatives, he’s still popular among a hard core of supporters in the party.

Johnson weighed into the ongoing debate about supplying Ukraine with advanced battle tanks. The U.K. has agreed to send Challenger 2 tanks to the Ukrainian battlefield, but Germany continues to hesitate about delivering Leopard 2 tanks.

“The only way to end this war is for Ukraine to win — and to win as fast as possible,” Johnson said in a statement. “This is the moment to double down, and to give the Ukrainians all the tools they need to finish the job.”

A spokesperson for No. 10 Downing Street said Sunak is “always supportive of all colleagues showing that the U.K. is behind Ukraine and will continue to support them.”
