Brazil ministers to visit site of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira’s murder

    [ad_1]

Indigenous activists are planning to take some of Brazil’s top ministers to the spot where Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira were murdered in the Amazon rainforest amid reports security forces are poised to launch a major environmental clampdown in the remote border region.

Leaders of Univaja, the Indigenous association for which Pereira worked in Brazil’s Javari valley, said senior politicians, including justice minister Flávio Dino and the minister for Indigenous peoples Sônia Guajajara, would travel there on 27 February.

The visit is part of a high-profile push by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s new government to beat back the illegal miners, loggers and poachers who wrought environmental havoc during the four-year term of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

Last week special forces operatives from the environmental protection agency Ibama and federal police launched what is expected to be a months-long operation to drive tens of thousands of illegal miners from the Yanomami indigenous territory after claims its 28,000 inhabitants had faced “genocide” under Bolsonaro.

Beto Marubo, one of Univaja’s main leaders, said the government delegation would be taken to the decrepit riverside base which guards the entrance to the Javari Valley territory, the world’s largest refuge for Indigenous tribes living in isolation.

The ministers would also be taken to the spot where Phillips, a British journalist who reported for the Guardian, and Pereira, a Brazilian Indigenous expert, were shot dead on 5 June last year as they traveled by boat down the Itaquaí river.

“We will show them,” said Marubo. “This is going to be a historic moment.”

As the activists spoke, the Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported that the defense ministry planned to launch a “mega-operation” in the Javari valley on the same day as the ministerial visit. The springboard for that operation will reportedly be Atalaia do Norte, the isolated river town Phillips and Pereira were trying to reach when they were attacked by a trio of men apparently enraged by Pereira’s defense of the region’s Indigenous communities.

The Univaja activists welcomed the new government’s moves to protect Indigenous communities and the environment but voiced skepticism about the “mega-operation”. Rather than a cinematic, headline-grabbing crackdown, Beto Marubo said they wanted to see a forceful, long-term intervention that would protect Indigenous communities and activists from ongoing violence.

“The threats continued [after Phillips and Pereira were murdered]. The invasions continue. We are constantly being threatened … No one is safe in our region – be they Indigenous people or those we call ‘the whites’,” said Paulo Marubo, Univaja’s president.

Paulo Marubo said urgent government action was now needed in the Javari valley – which, as well as environmental crime, has become a major thoroughfare for cocaine produced over the border in Peru – “so that what happened to the Yanomami Indigenous territory doesn’t happen here”.

“We lost a great friend,” he said of Pereira. “And we do not feel safe on our own land … There is no security in our region … We are human beings too. We have lived on these lands for thousands of years … and we are the greatest protectors of the forest.”

The planned ministerial visit to the Javari is another highly symbolic gesture of how Brazil’s attitude towards the environment and environmental defenders has changed since power passed from Bolsonaro to Lula on 1 January.

After Phillips and Pereira went missing, Bolsonaro’s administration faced international condemnation for dragging its heels with the search effort. Bolsonaro claimed the men had embarked on an “ill-advised adventure”. No ministers visited the Javari region in the days or months after their murders.

Lula’s ministers, in contrast, have voiced solidarity with the families of the murdered men and the Indigenous communities whose plight they were chronicling when they died. After Lula’s election last year, his environment minister, Marina Silva, said the new government would battle to honour the memory of the rainforest martyrs killed trying to safeguard the Amazon.

  • Decades on, I am still traumatised by my visit to the school toilets

Decades on, I am still traumatised by my visit to the school toilets

    [ad_1]

It was at primary school that going to the toilet became a big issue for me. I had never used one of the cubicles before, but the moment came when home time was too far away for me to wait. I had to go. I must have been breaking new ground in my year group because the moment I shut the door my classmates were clambering up to look down, and getting down to look up, over and under the partitions, to see what I was up to. I don’t know whether this happened at all schools, or, indeed, whether it happened to anyone but me at my school, but I inadvertently caused a sensation. Word went out in the playground: “Eggy’s having a poo!” Eggy was my nickname. Long story; let’s not go there.

More pupils streamed into the toilets to climb and crawl to a vantage point. Needless to say, I couldn’t go. I gave up and the crowd dispersed. I told the teacher what had happened – Mrs Dalman, I believe. She said the other children were very naughty and it wouldn’t do. Back to the toilet I went, escorted by Mrs Dalman who, to my dismay, stood guard outside the cubicle door while I struggled within. It was no good; again I couldn’t go. I told her I had, but I hadn’t.

Ever since this excruciating incident, the whole business of doing my business has been wreathed in shame and embarrassment. To this day I can’t perform unless conditions are optimal. I need to be out of sight and sound of everyone. For me, communal toilets of any kind have been, literally, no-go areas. I’m appalled by noises emanating from other cubicles. And even more appalled that anyone should have to hear mine. On the caravan site where I spent my childhood holidays, I would loiter outside the toilet block at a quiet time of day until I was sure I would be alone.

Workplace toilet facilities have long been a challenge. On my first day of work experience at the BBC in 1992, I found myself in a cubicle next to someone making an almighty racket. I abandoned ship, but as I came out, my noisy neighbour emerged too. I instantly recognised him as a legend of television journalism who I had long admired. On reflection, this incident worked to my advantage as the BBC newsroom suddenly felt less intimidating; these people were human after all.

Happily, certain improvements in communal toilet design have made my life easier. Importantly, the kind of cubicle partitions with six-inch gaps at the bottom seem to be dying out. The odd glimpse of a neighbour’s shoe or dropped trouser has long been a “game over” moment for me. At the BBC at least, the partitions are now solid. Much better. However, there is one more thing they could do to help me out. The silence in these places is needlessly deafening. Why so quiet, when it throws every peep or parp into sharp, trumpeting relief? In lifts, music is often played for our listening pleasure. I pray they will soon see fit to pipe radio into every communal lavatory too, so providing users with a modesty-sparing degree of audio cover. My hope is that this will become the norm as we move inexorably towards gender-neutral toilets in which privacy, presumably, will be paramount. Toilets could then be labelled not by gender, but by the genre of musical accompaniment available within. Opera? Jazz? Metal? Rap? I wonder what will work best. Who knows, some might still choose silence. Each to their own.

1.50 lakh delegates likely to visit India for G20 meetings in 2023

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Nearly 1.50 lakh foreign delegates are expected to arrive in India this year to participate in various G20 meetings to be held in 56 cities, Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Tuesday.

Addressing reporters, Reddy said after independence and till 2014, only 13 antiquities that were smuggled out of India, were brought back. Whereas during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits to various countries, 229 relics or monuments were brought to the country.

“India is hosting (heading) G20 this year. Officials and ministers and delegates from 29 countries (20 countries of the G20 group and nine special invitees) will be coming to India to participate in various meetings. The meetings will be held in 56 cities in India.

Approximately 1.50 lakh foreign delegates are expected. Along with them their family members and associates are also expected.” Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the tourism sector suffered heavily for two years. However, the revival started in 2022 as domestic tourism also picked up.

Under Swadesh Darshan Scheme, Andhra Pradesh got Rs 141 crore so far for various projects for which the state tourism department is the implementing agency.

Reddy urged the state government to ensure that Yuva Tourism Clubs are opened in every educational institution in the state for familiarisation of tourist destinations.

Reddy participated in various programs related to his ministry in Amaravati. After offering special puja in Amaralingeswara Swamy temple, the Union Minister launched the Buddha Circuit and participated in several other programmes.

He formally handed over the ancient Amaravati artifact brought from Britain to the Archaeological Survey of India Museum.
State Tourism Minister RK Roja and AP BJP chief Somu Veerraju also attended the programmes, a press release from Reddy’s office said.

Iranian President Raisi to visit China to shore up ties

    [ad_1]

    china iran 08706

Raisi’s visit is expected to deepen ties between the two political and economic partners that are opposed to the U.S.-led Western domination of international affairs.

The two leaders met last September in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, when Xi underscored China’s support for Iran.

In December, Raisi pledged to remain committed to deepening the strategic partnership during a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Hu Chunhua in Tehran.

China is a major buyer of Iranian oil and an important source of investment in the Mideast country. In 2021, Iran and China signed a 25-year strategic cooperation agreement that covered major economic activities from oil and mining to industry, transportation and agriculture.

Both countries have had tense relations with the United States and have sought to project themselves as a counterweight to American power alongside Russia.

Washington has accused Iran of selling hundreds of attack drones to Russia for its war in Ukraine and has sanctioned executives of an Iranian drone manufacturer. At that same time, ties between Moscow and Beijing have grown stronger.

Iran on Saturday celebrated the 44th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution amid nationwide anti-government protests and heightened tensions with the West.

Zelenskyy in surprise London visit to meet Sunak and King Charles

LONDON — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in London to meet the U.K. prime minister and King Charles III as Britain announces new training programs for fighter pilots and marines.

Zelenskyy’s surprise trip includes a visit to see Ukrainian troops being trained by the British armed forces and an address to the U.K. parliament. He will be granted an audience with the British monarch at Buckingham Palace Wednesday afternoon.

This is Zelenskyy’s second trip overseas since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The Ukrainian leader had also been expected to visit EU leaders in Brussels later this week, but that stop has been cast in doubt after the plans leaked on Monday.

In a statement Wednesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the U.K. will now train pilots on the operation of NATO-standard fighter jets as well as marines. This comes in addition to an expansion of U.K. training Ukrainian recruits from 10,000 to 20,000 soldiers this year.

The new training programs show Britain’s commitment “to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine for years to come,” Sunak said.

During their talks, Sunak is expected to offer the Ukrainian president longer-range weapons and his backing for Zelenskyy’s plans to work toward peace, No. 10 Downing Street said.

“President Zelenskyy’s visit to the U.K. is a testament to his country’s courage, determination and fight, and a testament to the unbreakable friendship between our two countries,” Sunak added.

The U.K. will also announce further sanctions Wednesday in response to Russia’s continued bombardment of Ukraine, the prime minister’s office said.

Xinjiang governor cancels EU visit amid Uyghur abuse blowback

    [ad_1]

    china xinjiang 18449

BRUSSELS — The governor of the Xinjiang region in China has canceled his controversial trip to Paris and Brussels, three people with knowledge of his plan told POLITICO.

The cancelation of Erkin Tuniyaz’s tour followed widespread concerns from lawmakers and activists that Europe would be rolling out the red carpet for the man in charge of the Chinese region where extreme measures against the Uyghur Muslim community amounted to what the U.N. calls potential crimes against humanity.

News of the trip being called off was relayed to people invited to his reception parties planned by Chinese diplomats in France and Belgium. “Due to scheduling reasons … [the event] is postponed,” according to an email sent to the EU guests in Brussels, the text of which was seen by POLITICO.

The one sent to invitees in Paris cited “an important domestic agenda.” Those sharing the information with POLITICO did so on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment on the Xinjiang governor’s trip publicly.

An emailed inquiry from POLITICO to the Chinese embassy in London, where Tuniyaz was supposed to begin his tour on Monday, was not answered. It remains unclear whether he will still go to London.

POLITICO reported on his planned trip to Brussels last week following a report by the Guardian on his London visit. It later emerged that he was also scheduled to go to Paris.

Critics questioned the British Foreign Office and the EU foreign policy arm for an initial plan to invite Tuniyaz for meetings during his trip. Some threatened legal action against him while he’s on European soil. The EU later defended its decision, saying they turned down Beijing’s requests to meet more senior EU officials.

The Chinese foreign ministry didn’t confirm Tuniyaz’s initial trip plan.

On the other hand, it announced that the Chinese foreign policy chief, Wang Yi, will be visiting Russia and four EU countries: France, Germany, Italy and Hungary. He’s also expected to speak at the Munich Security Conference. This will be Wang’s first trip to Europe since his promotion from foreign minister to the Communist Party Politburo late last year.

In the meantime the EU is expected to relaunch the human rights dialogue with China later this month, the first time since Beijing imposed sanctions on European diplomats, lawmakers and scholars in 2020, according to an EU official on foreign policy.

  • Musharraf gifted birth certificate during 2005 India visit

Musharraf gifted birth certificate during 2005 India visit

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Pakistan’s former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf, the architect of the 1999 Kargil War, was born at a civic hospital in Delhi in undivided India.

He received his birth certificate over six decades later during his visit here in 2005.

Musharraf died in Dubai on Sunday at the age of 79 after battling an incurable disease. He lived in self-imposed exile in the UAE to avoid criminal charges against him in Pakistan.

Born on August 11, 1943, a turbulent time of the Second World War and India’s freedom movement had gained momentum, Musharraf migrated to the newly formed Pakistan with his family after the Partition in 1947.

According to old records, he was born at a civic-run hospital here, now known as the Mrs Girdhari Lal Maternity Hospital which comes under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Located near the Kamla Market in the heart of Delhi, it is one of the oldest hospitals in the city and has served largely people residing in old Delhi.

“His (Musharraf’s) family lived in old Delhi, and two hospitals are near it — Victoria Zenana Hospital (renamed Kasturba Hospital after Independence) in Daryaganj and Girdhari Lal Maternity Hospital.

“We knew that he was born in Delhi, and today learned from news reports that he died in Dubai,” a former senior civic official told PTI.

When Musharraf visited India as Pakistan’s president in April 2005, the government of India had given him a special gift — his birth certificate.

The senior civic official, who retired in 2011, said, in the 1940s and even in 2005, things were birth and death records were kept manually. “It must not have been an easy job to look for the birth certificate of the 1940s after over 60 years,” he said.

According to an archival image dated April 17, 2005, Musharraf had received his birth certificate from the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi during his three-day visit to India.

Fulfilling his long-cherished desire, Musharraf also went to Ajmer Sharif during his 2005 India visit and paid obeisance at the Dargah of the famous Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.

The neighbourhood in old Delhi where Musharraf grew up before moving to Karachi, had been visited by him and his mother in the past.
