Bengal: Police say prime accused arrested in rape of minor as violent protests rock

Raiganj: A 20-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl in West Bengal’s North Dinajpur district that triggered violent protests, police said.

The 17-year-old girl, whose body was found in a canal in Kaliaganj police station area on Friday, knew the man, Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Sana Akhtar said, identifying him as the prime accused.

A case has been filed under IPC section 302 (murder) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act based on the complaint filed by the girl’s mother, he said.

The preliminary post-mortem report revealed no injury to the body, Akhtar said, adding that a bottle of poison was found near the body.

“We are investigating the case from all angles,” he said.

Violence rocked Kaliaganj, around 18 km from the Bangladesh border, as locals protested against the incident, prompting the police to use tear gas shells and charge batons to bring the situation under control, officials said.

Several shops and e-rickshaws were set on fire by the mob, which demanded the arrest of those behind the incident. Roads were also blocked and stones were hurled at the police, they said.

The RSS-backed ABVP gheraoed the Kaliaganj police station, while BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar sat on a dharna outside the SP office in Raiganj, demanding justice for the victim’s family.

Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed to bring the situation under control, police said, adding that a few protestors were also detained.

Three persons were injured in the police action and admitted to the Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital, officials said.

Majumdar, who visited the victim’s village along with local BJP MP Debasree Chaudhuri, demanded a CBI investigation into the incident.

“We think the real truth will be revealed only if a CBI inquiry is conducted in this case,” he told reporters.

State Minister for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Dr Shashi Panja hit out at the BJP leadership, particularly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, for identifying the minor in his tweets.

She alleged that the saffron party leaders were trying to instigate the people by misleading them.

“The BJP is trying to play dirty politics. That the Leader of Opposition (LoP) has divulged the identity of the victim girl through his tweets is itself a crime. How can he do that? They are playing dead body politics (sic),” Panja said.

The minister further said the post-mortem report would clear whether the girl was raped and killed or whether she died by suicide by consuming poison.

“At the moment, police are trying to bring the law and order under control. We must think about the mental condition of the family. Culprits will definitely be brought to the book,” Panja said.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) also sent a team to the area, and sought a report from the state police within three days.

The girl went missing on Thursday evening after she left home for going to her tuition classes. Her body was found the next day floating in a canal amid hectic searches by her family and locals.

Protests had started on Friday afternoon but quietened down by the day-end, only to restart on Saturday.

EU ambassador assaulted in Khartoum amid violent conflict in Sudan

Dublin: EU’s ambassador in Sudan Aidan O’Hara has been assaulted at his home in Khartoum, which is gripped by deadly fighting between rival forces, Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin has said.

The Irish diplomat was not “seriously hurt”, Martin has confirmed, the BBC reported.

Martin described the attack as a “gross violation of obligations to protect diplomats”.

Around 185 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured in three days of fighting, according to the UN.

Sudan has been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 15.

Violent clashes in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum renewed on Monday around the Sudanese army command, Khartoum International Airport, and the presidential palace, after a ceasefire for three hours on Sunday.

The Sudanese Army on Monday said that they had limited clashes with the RSF around the perimeter of the army’s General Command and the center of Khartoum, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The armed forces are in complete control of all their headquarters, and what is being circulated about the enemy’s seizure of the general command, the guesthouse, or the Republican palace is untrue,” the army said in a statement.

The army said that the Sudanese Air Force on Monday launched strikes against a number of hostile targets with the aim of ending pockets of the RSF in the capital.

The army further accused what it called “media mouthpieces” loyal to the RSF of spreading many lies to mislead public opinion.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the RSF, on Monday urged the international community to intervene to stop what he termed as “crimes of Sudanese army commander.”

“The international community must take action now and intervene against the crimes of Sudanese General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, a radical Islamist who is bombing civilians from the air,” Dagalo said on his Twitter account on Monday.

“The army is waging a brutal campaign against the innocent, bombing them with missiles,” he added.

He also denied that his forces initiated the fighting with the Sudanese army. “We did not attack anyone. Our actions are merely a response to the siege and assault against our force,” he said.

Volker Perthes, special representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Monday said he was “extremely disappointed” that the Humanitarian cessation of hostilities that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF had committed to, was only partially honored on Sunday.

“Perthes continues to urge all parties to respect their international obligations, including to ensure the protection of all civilians,” UNITAMS said in a statement.

He vowed to remain engaged with the Sudanese, regional and international partners to work for a cessation of hostilities.

The two sides traded accusations of initiating the conflict in the capital Khartoum and other places in Sudan.

The tension between the two military forces has escalated since Wednesday in the Merowe region in northern Sudan, after the RSF moved military vehicles to a location near the military air base there, a move that the army considered illegal.

Deep differences have emerged between the Sudanese army and the RSF, particularly regarding the latter’s integration into the army as stipulated in a framework agreement signed between military and civilian leaders on December 5, 2022.

Russian woman returns heartbroken as Kerala friend turns violent

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: The ordeal of a young Russian woman ended as she boarded a flight to her home country via Dubai on Tuesday from the Kozhikode international airport.

The woman had come to India with her 29-old-male friend Aghil, who met her first on social media.

Aghil, an engineer by profession, was working in Doha. After the two met on a social media site, she flew down to Doha.

From there the two travelled to Nepal and finally to Aghil’s home town in India.

The purpose of their visit to home was to get married, but things went awry after Aghil often turned violent towards her. Unable to bear his behaviour, she tried to flee from his house last week by jumping from the first floor and got injured.

Soon the police arrested Aghil, and is presently in judicial custody.

The woman while convalescing at the state-run Kozhikode Medical College hospital gave a statement before the local magistrate narrating her sufferings.

The Russian Consulate also got into the act and got in touch with her parents in Russia. They sent a ticket to their daughter to return and on Tuesday morning the police put her on a flight to Dubai and from there she would return to her home country.

The woman has narrated her ordeal in her Facebook post wherein she said that she came with a lot of expectations to get married, but everything failed, and she suffered a lot when being with Aghil.

  • Jamia Nagar violence: Chakka jam not violent protest method, Sharjeel Imam tells HC

Jamia Nagar violence: Chakka jam not violent protest method, Sharjeel Imam tells HC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Defending his discharge in a 2019 Jamia Nagar violence case, JNU student Sharjeel Imam Thursday told the Delhi High Court he only campaigned in favour of peaceful protest and ‘chakka jam’ cannot be termed a “violent method of protest”.

Imam’s stand came in his written submissions filed in response to the Delhi Police’s plea challenging the trial court order of February 4 discharging him and several others, including student activists Asif Iqbal Tanha and Safoora Zargar, in the matter.

The case concerns the violence that erupted after a clash between police and people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Jamia Nagar area here in December 2019.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma listed the case for hearing on March 23 after the investigating agency sought time on account of the ill health of one of its lawyers.

The court asked the respondents to file their written submissions in the meantime.

It also directed that the electronic evidence, including videos, be placed on record.

The trial court had in its February 4 order discharged 11 people in the case while holding that they were made “scapegoats” by police and that dissent has to be encouraged not stifled.

The police, in its revision petition, has said the trial court’s order is in the teeth of well settled principles of law, suffers from grave infirmities, and is perverse.

The police plea said the trial court got swayed by “emotional and sentimental feelings” and cast aspersions on the prosecuting agency. It passed “gravely prejudicial” and “adverse” remarks against the prosecuting agency and the investigation, the revision petition says.

In his written submissions, Imam said shouting slogans in favour of a particular means of peaceful protest in no way portrays his participation in the violence that ensued later.

Imam was accused of instigating the riots by delivering a provocative speech at the Jamia Milia University on December 13, 2019. He continues to remain in jail as he is an accused in the larger conspiracy case of the 2020 northeast Delhi riots.

He stated the protesters had assembled in exercise of their fundamental right to assemble peacefully as guaranteed under the Constitution, and in absence of any prohibitory orders, no culpability could be attributed to him.

“In his speech at AMU on 16.12.2019, the Answering Respondent merely stated that he campaigned in favor of chakka jam as a means of protest which by no stretch of the imagination could be called a violent method of protest,” he submitted.

There is no admissible evidence against Imam to show that he shared the common object of the unlawful assembly and that “he was a victim of the violence and had no active role to play in its culmination”, he said in the written submissions.

“The Answering Respondent is not to be seen in any of the videos adduced by the Prosecution nor is there any statement recorded by the investigating agency in which he is even named much less having attributed any role to him in the commission of the alleged violence,” it stated.

The fact that violence occurred during the peaceful protest at Jamia which resulted in Sharjeel Imam breaking his glasses is not indicative of the fact that the he participated in the said violence, he has submitted.

Imam also asserted that his CDR clearly established that he had already left the place of occurrence before the assembly turned unlawful and the allegedly provocative speech was delivered much after the alleged rioting and is subject matter of another case.

“(Imam) only campaigned in favour of a means of peaceful protest, not violence. The act of shouting slogans in favour of a particular means of peaceful protest in no way portrays the participation of the Answering Respondent in the violence that ensued during the protest,” he said.

The alleged disclosure statement by Imam, the document said, was not recorded by the investigating agency in the present case and even otherwise it has got no evidentiary value.

On February 13, the high court had issued notice to Imam and others on the police plea, and clarified that the observations of the lower court would not affect further investigation in the matter or trial of any accused.

Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, representing Delhi Police, has urged the high court to expunge the remarks made by the trial court, arguing that the case concerned an unlawful assembly turning violent and not the “right to dissent”.

The police said at the stage of consideration of an application for discharge, the trial court has to proceed with an assumption that the materials brought on record by the prosecution are true and not go deep into the matter as if to decide the issue of conviction.

Noting that the accused were merely present at the protest site and there was no incriminating evidence against them, the trial court had said dissent is an extension of the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression, subject to reasonable restrictions.

While discharging the 11 accused, the trial court had ordered framing of charges against one of them- Mohammad Ilyas.

The Jamia Nagar police station had filed charge sheet under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code against Imam, Tanha, Zargar, Mohammad Qasim, Mahmood Anwar, Shahzar Raza Khan, Mohammad Abuzar, Mohammad Shoaib, Umair Ahmad, Bilal Nadeem, Chanda Yadav and Mohammad Ilyas.

Violent mob lynches man in Pakistan over blasphemy allegations

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan Punjab Inspector General of Police, Usman Anwar, on Saturday suspended two senior cops for failing to prevent a mob from lynching a man over blasphemy allegations in Nankana Sahib, media reports said.

The IG took notice of the incident as videos circulating on social media purportedly showed a violent mob outside a police station in Nankana Sahib, Dawn reported.

“Total madness!!! An angry mob attacked the police station in Nankana Sahib. Reportedly, a man accused of blasphemy was killed and his body was burnt by the mob. Apparently, the police were unable to control the situation,” read a tweet.

In one video, the mob could be seen scaling the large gates of what appeared to be the Warburton police station, and opening it, after which the rowdy crowd outside storms the building, Dawn reported.

A second video showed young children purportedly part of the mob smiling inside the police station, as broken glass and overturned furniture could be seen strewn about.

The police statement said the IG has suspended Nankana Sahib circle Deputy Superintendent of Police Nawaz Waraq and Warburton SHO Feroz Bhatti.

The IG further directed the Internal Accountability Branch DIG Syed Muhammad Amin Bukhari and Special Branch DIG Raja Faisal to reach the spot and submit an inquiry report.

“No one is allowed to take the law into their hands no matter how influential they are,” the IG was quoted as saying.

“Strict department and legal action will be taken against those responsible for the incident, as well as the perpetrators of negligence and incompetence,” the IG asserted.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC), Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, condemned the incident, saying it was regrettable the way the charged mob attacked the blasphemy accused, Dawn reported.

“Inhuman torture and killing a person accused of blasphemy and attacking the police station is regrettable and condemnable,” Ashrafi said in a tweet.

DOJ warns against protests turning violent ahead of Tyre Nichols footage release

    ransomware justice department 04196

The officers were all fired from the department last week and have been charged with murder and other crimes related to the death of Nichols.

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis told CNN Friday morning that the video shows “acts that defy humanity” and “a disregard for life” — namely, the officers using what she said was a group-think mentality to exert an “unexplainable” amount of aggression toward Nichols. She added the video is “about the same if not worse” than the graphic video of Los Angeles police officers brutally attacking Rodney King in 1991.

“I was outraged. It was incomprehensible to me. It was unconscionable, and I felt that I needed to do something and do something quickly,” Davis said. “I don’t think I’ve witnessed anything of that nature in my entire career.”

Garland on Friday said though he hasn’t seen the video, he’s been briefed on its contents and called it “deeply disturbing” and “horrific.” FBI Director Christopher Wray, who was also at the briefing, said he was “appalled” by the video.

“I have seen the video myself, and I will tell you I was appalled,” Wray said. “I’m struggling to find a stronger word, but I will just tell you I was appalled.”

Wray added that all of the FBI’s field offices have been alerted to work closely with their state and local partners, particularly in Memphis, “in the event of something getting out of hand” during protests over the weekend. U.S. Capitol Police have beefed up security on the Hill — with bike-rack style security fencing erected overnight — as police departments across the country are also bracing for protests related to the footage.

“There’s a right way and a wrong way in this country to express being upset or angry about something, and we need to make sure that if there is that sentiment expressed here, it’s done in the right way,” Wray said.
