Army truck attacked in Poonch was carrying fruits for Iftar; villagers decide on no Eid

There will be no Eid-al-Fitr in Sangiote village. A pale of gloom engulfed the village after news of the Poonch terror attack reached its villagers.

“We have not celebrated Eid with any pomp and show. We just offered prayers. The people are grieved over the martyrdom of jawans, who were bringing material for our Iftar on Thursday evening,” Sangiote Sarpanch Mukhtiar Khan told PTI over the phone from his home.

Expressing solidarity with the Indian Army and the families of the jawans, he said an Iftar was scheduled in the village on Thursday evening and the jawans were ferrying vegetables, fruits and other materials in the truck from Bhimber Gali camp when they came under attack at Bhata Dhurian.

The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

The whole village stands with the Army, Khan said.

“After Eid prayers, we are staying back at our homes and there will be no celebrations like visiting relatives, distributing sweets, wearing new clothes or taking children outside as is the practice on the first day of the festival,” he said.

Amir Khan, another villager, said after the terrorist attack they had convened a condolence meeting. “The participants were unanimous in condemning the terrorist attack and decided to restrict Eid celebrations to namaz’ only,” he said.

Saddam Hussain said a company of the Rashtriya Rifles is deployed in the village and enjoys cordial ties with the villagers. “The soldiers usually distribute fresh fruits, including watermelons, to the residents for Iftar’ and nobody had imagined such an attack on them just two days ahead of Eid,” he said.

The Bhata Dhurian forest area has for long remained a preferred infiltration route for terrorists from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover and natural caves.

In October 2021, nine soldiers were killed in two major gunfights with terrorists within four days in the forest area during a search operation, which continued for over three weeks with no trace of terrorists.

  • Villagers Panic After Leopard Sighting In Central Kashmir

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On Sunday morning, a leopard was seen in various villages of Central Kashmir’s Budgam, which caused panic among the residents.

Local sources said that a leopard was seen near the “Alamdar Brick Kiln,” and the same animal was also spotted freely roaming in the Sharatpora and Bonhuma areas of Budgam.

Those who saw the big cat near the brick kiln raised an alarm and informed the wildlife department. “We saw a big cat early this morning near the brick kiln. The same leopard was seen in the outskirts of Sharatpora village. We are very scared because leopard sightings have become a regular occurrence in the area. We have lost many cattle, and even human beings have been killed in leopard attacks,” said some locals.

The villagers appealed to the Wildlife Department to send a team to capture the leopard before it could harm anyone. [KNT]

Bhiwani killings: Villagers stage dharna demanding arrest of accused

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: After the charred bodies of two Bharatpur youths – Nasir and Junaid – were found in Haryana recently, the families of the victims have staged a dharna in the village graveyard in the district demanding the arrest of killers.

They alleged that when Kanhaiya was murdered in Udaipur, his criminals were caught in 1 hour, but now the killers of both victims have not been arrested yet.

Nasir’s and Junaid’s cousin Mohammad Javed said that he will not move from dharna until the accused are arrested. “We all are sitting on dharna, we will continue to sit on dharna like this till our demands are fulfilled,” he said.

A complaint was registered on February 15, after Junaid and Nasir were abducted and beaten up by unknown people. They were allegedly taken along; relatives allege that Junaid and Nasir were kidnapped in their own Bolero car and were burnt alive.

Bharatpur Police along with Haryana Police is probing the whole matter, and efforts are being made to arrest absconding accused.

A delegation of Muslim community led by State Minister Zahida Khan met Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in Jaipur on Saturday.

Yavatmal: Protesting locals occupied a stage and forced authorities to cancel Republic Day programs to press for their demand for a road in their village in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal on Thursday.

Several residents of Takli village in the district on Wednesday began a hunger strike in front of the sub-divisional office in Umarkhed demanding road connectivity in their area.

The locals have alleged that an 8-km road was being built to link their village to Umerkhed but the work stopped midway. They have been demanding the completion of the road.

A video shot at Takli village showed several students and women sitting on the stage where the cultural events were to be held on Thursday.

It also showed an official requesting the protesters to move away and let the programs take place but they stay put.
