AP: Vijayawada division flags off 100th three-phase locomotive

Vijayawada: At a time when the Indian Railways is according major thrust to electrification, the South Central Railway (SCR) zone’s Vijayawada Division has marked the milestone of flagging off the 100th three-phase electric locomotive.
Divisional railway manager (DRM) Shivendra Mohan has flagged of the locomotive from the Electric Loco Shed (ELS) in Vijayawada on Wednesday evening, which was built at the Chitranjan Locomotive Works and allotted to the division.
Established in April 1981, ELS has completed 42 years of service and it was initially commissioned to maintain conventional electric locomotives, a statement shared on Thursday.

Following servicing such locomotives for four decades, the loco shed has graduated to take up upgraded versions, 3-Phase electric locomotives, from April 2021.
“In a span of just two years, ELS has proved its capacity and calibre to commission and maintain 100 3-Phase locomotives,” said the statement.
Further, the shed functions as an electric locomotive power depot, performing locomotive maintenance and repair services for the Railways.
It also offers all major and minor schedules such as annual overhauling, intermediate overhauling, monthly checks and schedules to maintain the fitness of locomotives.
Currently, the Vijayawada shed holds 264 locomotives, 100 three-phase electric ones and 164 conventional electric locomotives.

Andhra Pradesh CM hosts Iftar in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday hosted ‘Iftar’ dinner here for the Muslim community, on behalf of the state government.
During the event, the Chief Minister spoke a few words in Urdu and extended advance Eid-Ul-Fitr greetings.
It is believed that God listens to the prayers offered during Ramzaan, so I request you all to pray for the state for good times, said Reddy in Urdu in a video link shared by the state government.

As part of Iftar, the CM also offered namaz prayers at the mini stadium in Vidyadharapuram in the city.
Deputy Chief Minister (Minority Welfare) S K Amzad Basha, were among those present.
Popular Tollywood actor Ali also attended Iftar and was seen offering prayers.

10% off on travel between Hyderabad, Vijayawada: TSRTC

Hyderabad: Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has announced a 10 percent discount to bus commuters travelling between Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
“The discount will also be applicable on Super Luxury and Rajdhani AC services on the said route,” said the officials.
Since the offer is valid till April 30 only, the RTC officials have requested citizens to make the best use of the offer.

AP: Gold worth Rs 7.48 crore seized by Vijayawada Customs

Vijayawada: The Customs Commissionerate in Vijayawada seized 12.97 kilogram of gold worth Rs 7.48 crore and nabbed four individuals during a special operation, officials said on Wednesday.
According to officials, the gold was being smuggled to Andhra Pradesh.
The operation involved interception at multiple locations across the state where the customs officials got hold of carriers of smuggled gold who were travelling in different modes of public transport.
Four individuals carrying the precious yellow metal were arrested under provisions of the Customs Act 1962 and further investigations are on.
According to a release, the customs officers seized 12.97 kg gold, estimated to be worth Rs 7.48 crore.
“The gold seized predominantly included gold whose foreign markings were deliberately defaced to try and camouflage the smuggled nature of the gold,” it added.

Two killed as lift plummets at Vijayawada thermal station

Vijayawada: Two workers were killed in an incident of lift collapse at Dr. Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) at Ibrahimpatnam near here on Sunday.
The incident occurred when the lift cable snapped.
There were around 20 workers in the lift, which got stuck apparently due to overloading.
Other workers managed to get down but the cable snapped with two workers still inside. As a result of this, the lift came crashing down from a height of about 70 meters.
Both the workers sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to the NTTPS Board Hospital. However, both were declared dead.
The deceased were identified as Chotu Kumar Singh (23) and Jitendra Singh (24), both hailing from Jharkhand.
The bodies were shifted to Vijayawada Government Hospital for autopsy. Police registered a case and took up investigation.
Some workers at the plant complained that the lift capacity was only for 10 people, but there were 20 people in it and heavy material was also being moved through the lift.

The contract workers were working on the plant’s stage V, which is under construction.
Labour unions staged a protest at the plant demanding that the management pay compensation and give jobs to the families of the deceased. The plant officials assured them that they will take steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
