Indian peacekeepers in Syria ferry earthquake relief supplies to victims

    [ad_1]

United Nations: Indian peacekeepers deployed in Syria have responded to the plight of earthquake victims in that country by ferrying relief sent by India through devastated areas.

Indian peacekeepers drove a convoy of four vehicles from Camp Faouar in the Golan Heights to Aleppo to deliver the aid on Tuesday, according to Colonel Pratyush Kumar, the chief of staff of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

Another convoy is being planned, he said.

He said that a portion of the relief supplies flown by India on C-17s from Hindon to Damascus was earmarked for Aleppo and was handed over by the Indian Embassy to UNDOF’s Indian contingent.

The relief material that included medicines, medical supplies and equipment were taken by road to UNDOF’s Camp Faouar in Quneitra, Kumar said in response to a query from IANS.

From there they went on the arduous 400 km journey to Aleppo where the relief supplies were handed over to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, he said.

A total of 10 tonnes of assorted relief material were collected by the UNDOF for the relief operations in the Aleppo area following appeals also to international donors, Kumar said.

The February 6 earthquake that cut a deadly swathe across Syria and Turkiye has claimed over 40,000 lives, at least 6,000 in Syria.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made an international appeal on Tuesday for $397 million to help the victims in Syria.

UNDOF’s mandate from the Security Council is to maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria and the governments of India and Nepal gave the required permission for their peacekeepers to be deployed outside the mandate area.

India contributes 200 personnel and Nepal 415 to UNDOF, which is headed by Major General Nirmal Kumar Thapa of Nepal.

On receiving a request from the Syrian government for help with earthquake relief, an advance UNDOF team headed by Kumar went to Aleppo on Sunday and met with Governor Ahmed Hussain Diab and other officials to assess the help required there.

Diab told them that the need of the hour for the people of the Aleppo governorate was relief material and UNDOF organised the relief convoys with Indian aid.

Turkey-Syria earthquake: Clothes donated for victims burned in Germany

    [ad_1]

In an arson attack in the German city of Recklinhausen, Monday, February 13, 2023, people set fire to clothes worth thousands of dollars donated to earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, local media reported.

A video clip shared on social media platforms showed the storage where all the donated clothes were stored was stormed by arsonists, burned the clothes collected by the volunteers.

As per a report by Middle East Eye, Vijay Raj, who runs the Ani store where the incident occurred, told Marler Zeitung,  that his store had received a lot of clothing and cash donations for the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.

“Our dreams of donating these clothes and the money were shattered when two boys of European descent entered the store and set it on fire,” Raj explained.

He added, “We also found two Turkish flags that we were hanging, which were thrown into the fire and burned with the donations.”

Raj explained that he no longer accepts donations in tangible form, and asked people to give him money to give to charitable organizations working on the ground.

On Saturday, February 11, the German Interior Ministry said it would offer relatives of current Turkish migrants and Syrian refugees temporary visas to come to Germany from disaster areas.

“This is emergency aid,” German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the Bild newspaper on Saturday. “We want Turkish or Syrian families in Germany to bring their close relatives from the disaster area to their homes without bureaucracy.”

At dawn on Monday, February 6, double earthquakes, hours apart, struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, the first measuring 7.7 degrees and the second 7.6 degrees, and hundreds of violent aftershocks, which left vast losses of lives and property in both countries.

  • After DDA demolition drive stops, AAP seeks compensation for victims from L-G

After DDA demolition drive stops, AAP seeks compensation for victims from L-G

    [ad_1]

Delhi: After the much disputed DDA demolition drive in Mehrauli was stopped on Lt Governor VK Saxena’s direction, the Aam Aadmi party on Wednesday sought compensation from him for the victims of the area.

In a letter to the L-G, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti said, “Direct the concerned to assess the damages already caused to many houses by the said demolition and do the needful, including appropriate compensation and to get them reinstated at the locations from where they have been uprooted without any further delay”.

The AAP leader further said that till the time it takes place, please direct the concerned to put some makeshift arrangements like tents etc.

Bharti also sought the investigation into the issues, calling it “serious breach of transaction of business rules, Govt. of NCT of Delhi Act, Constitution of India and various judgments of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India” and has urged to punish the officials guilty of this severe dereliction.

“When it became apparent after making enquiries with District Magistrate (South) Office that the demarcation which became the basis of demolition, in Mehrauli, by DDA was neither in the knowledge of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal nor Revenue Minister Kailash Gehlot ji, then why the press release released from your office attributed the flawed demarcation to the Aam Aadmi Party Government? the letter reads further.

Such an attempt was surely political from the L-G office with the sole intent to malign the clean image of Arvind Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party government, he said.

“On 14.02.2023, the reason issued by your esteemed office for stopping the massive and inhuman demolition exercise being carried out by DDA in Mehrauli was the same which we have been agitating since day one under the leadership of Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal i.e. the flawed demarcation report.

“Had you agreed on this most important flaw brought out to you/your officers’ notice by us on day one of the demolition exercise which rendered many people, including old people, women and children homeless then such a massive tragedy would have been avoided”, the AAP MLA stated in the letter.

The letter reads, “Since in the urbanised villages applicability of Delhi Land Reforms Act ceases and hence the demarcation work should be carried out directly by DDA following the due process, which requires the demarcating agency to invite objections from the people who at present are residing on the land being demarcated and ensure their full participation before finalizing the demarcation report or if you still wish to go ahead with the Revenue Office of Delhi government then it is urged that offices of Chief Minister and Revenue Minister must not be bypassed”.

  • Moved by earthquake in Turkey, Hyderabadi girl Khadija raises money for victims; writes heart wrenching poem

Moved by earthquake in Turkey, Hyderabadi girl Khadija raises money for victims; writes heart wrenching poem

    [ad_1]

An eight-year-old girl Khadija Ahmed in Hyderabad has sold her three poems to 10 persons and raised Rs 3000 to donate the money for the earthquake affected people in Turkey.

She was shaken by the news of the killings and damages pouring in from Turkey. She wanted to help the victims and hit upon an idea of her own.

When asked by this Siasat.com correspondent what her meager contribution would do for the victims who have lost lives, homes and everything they had she narrated a story.

“My parents had told me a story. It was about Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham). His enemy raised a massive fire as he wanted to throw him into the flames and kill him. There was this little bird that heard about the plans of that enemy and began flying with a drop of water in its beak.  On her way someone asked the bird what would you do with that drop of water. The bird replied that it would pour it on the fire. The onlooker who was surprised with the answer asked what difference that one drop of water would make. When God will ask me what you did to help my prophet I would tell Him that I did not remain a silent spectator. I dropped water to put out the flames.”

Khadija said she has been inspired by this story of the little bird.

Khadija, daughter of Kaleem Ahmed and Sumaiyah Syed, studies at Oakridge International School located in Gachibowli.

She is a grade three student who spends most of her free time in reading, painting and listening to music. Public speaking is another area where she takes interest. Her favourite author is J K Rowling.

    When the Wind brought sorrow,
    Destroying homes and families.

The Wind asked if it would be the families he would borrow,
But the people said, ‘No!’ ‘It can be anything except our people, our fantasies.’

But the Wind laughed wickedly, and said,
“I do not listen to filthy things like you.
“So hurry along, before I destroy your kids in their cosy beds!”
And the people knew, that whatever wind said was always true.

So they did whatever Wind said,
And Wind was to rule the Earth, always in everyone’s and his lifetime.

And sometimes, Wind was so dangerous that people used to be scared covered in their beds,
Some say he might die out of anger in time!

Some say he will die a vain death,
While others say that’s not true.
Some say while he dies he will have no wealth,
But many say he will come in different souls and be YOU!
