    Rahul gandhi Delhi police

New Delhi: The Congress on Sunday condemned the Delhi Police action against Rahul Gandhi and called it the worst case of “political vendetta” and “harassment”, asserting that the Centre was setting a wrong precedent by registering such cases against political opponents.

Addressing a joint press conference at the AICC headquarters here, party leaders Ashok Gehlot, Jairam Ramesh and Abhishek Singhvi said the move was a clear case of “vendetta, intimidation and harassment” in order to create an atmosphere against the former Congress chief.

Gehlot asserted that the central dispensation was setting a bad example by registering cases on statements of opposition leaders made during political campaigns, adding that the BJP leaders could face similar action over remarks made in states not ruled by it.

He said if Union ministers make similar comments in opposition-ruled states during elections, they may face the same action as done by the Delhi Police.

Delhi police notice to Rahul Gandhi for details on ‘sexual harassment’ of women

The Delhi Police on Sunday reached the residence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a notice issued to him over his “women are still being sexually assaulted” remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The police team headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda arrived at Gandhi’s 12, Tughlaq Lane residence, officials said.

Hitting out at the police action, Singhvi said the statements in question were made by Gandhi in Srinagar on January 30 and thus the same does not fall under the Delhi Police jurisdiction.

He also wondered why the city police force was showing so much alacrity in making frequent visits to Gandhi’s residence after 45 days of the remarks made by the former Congress chief.

He added that the move was to divert the attention from the Adani issue, but the Congress and other opposition parties will not backtrack.

  • Demolition again in Andhra village, Jana Sena calls it political vendetta

Demolition again in Andhra village, Jana Sena calls it political vendetta

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Tension once again gripped Ippatam village in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday after municipal authorities resumed demolition, evoking strong protest from the local residents.

The authorities razed the boundary walls of 12 houses with bulldozers while police personnel were deployed in large numbers to prevent any untoward incident.

The police had also deployed personnel at the entry points into the village and were allowing people only after checking their identification.

The action by the municipal authorities angered the villagers, who alleged that they were being targeted. Ignoring the protest, the officials carried on with their work.

Tension mounted after the officials moved to demolish the house of Jana Sena Party’s village president Narasimha Rao.

After a huge protest by the villagers, the officials left after demolishing the boundary wall.

The villagers questioned the officials about what they intended to achieve by expanding the existing road when the village had no public transport facility.

Meanwhile, Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader N. Manohar termed the demolition as vendetta politics of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government.

He alleged that the ruling party is targeting the villagers just because they had given their land for a JSP meeting.

This is the second time that the municipal authorities have taken up demolition in the village.

In November last year, a few houses were demolished. Actor and JPS leader Pawan Kalyan had visited the village to show solidarity with the villagers.

He had alleged that houses of Jana Sena supporters were demolished.

He had alleged that the YSRCP government headed by Jagan Mohan Reddy is targeting the villagers for giving their lands for holding Jana Sena formation day public meeting on March 14, 2022.

He said when the ruling party leaders were threatening people in Amaravati not to cooperate with Jana Sena for its public meeting, villagers of Ippatam came forward to give their lands.

  • ED, CBI have become instruments of political vendetta: Congress

ED, CBI have become instruments of political vendetta: Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In an oblique reference to the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia by the CBI in connection with the excise policy scam, the Congress on Monday termed the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Income Tax Department “harassment tools” of the BJP-led Central government.

“@INCIndia has always held the belief that institutions like the ED, CBI and Income Tax Department have become instruments of political vendetta and harassment under ‘Modi Sarkar’. These institutions have lost all professionalism. Opposition leaders are selectively targeted to destroy their reputation,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, without mentioning anything about the arrest of the deputy of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The Congress’ reaction has come 24 hours after Sisodia was arrested by the CBI following a day-long questioning on Sunday, even as the leaders of the party’s Delhi unit welcomed the move. In fact, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi had come up with a clarification after initially supporting Sisodia.

Singhvi tweeted: “It is but obvious that my tweet at 3.36 p.m. on February 26 on Manish Sisodia was in the context of my appearance for him as senior counsel in many cases and not on behalf of the Congress party, though space constraints made me inadvertently omit the mentioning of this fact.”

On Sunday, Singhvi, who is a senior lawyer, tweeted: “God be with Manish ji. Distressing to see such repeated, flagrant, egregious and shameless misuse of arrest power. #Sisodia Cnot be flight risk, suborning evidence or witnesses or non cooperation after almost a year of investigation & interrogation. How & why arrest after so long?”

According to a source, the reason for the late reaction was the silence of the Aam Aadmi Party when Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were summoned by the ED.

However, many Opposition leaders, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, have condemned Sisodia’s arrest.

“The arrest of @msisodia by CBI is another example of how @BJP4India misuses the Union government’s agencies to intimidate the opposition. It’s a blatant abuse of power and an attack on democracy. Such repression undermines the very foundation of our nation and should be resisted,” he tweeted.

  • No liquor scam in Delhi, excise policy case result of political vendetta: Kejriwal

No liquor scam in Delhi, excise policy case result of political vendetta: Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has asserted that there was no “liquor scam” in Delhi and that the case over his government’s excise policy was created as a result of “political vendetta and conspiracy” ahead of his deputy Manish Sisodia’s questioning by the CBI slated for Sunday.

Reacting to Kejriwal’s assertion, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva wondered why did the AAP government scrap the excise policy if there was no scam in it.

The Excise Policy 2021-22 was withdrawn by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government last year after a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe was recommended by Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena into “violation of norms and lapses”.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Kejriwal said his government will fully cooperate with the CBI’s investigation into the alleged irregularities in the implementation of the now-scrapped Excise Policy 2021-22.

“First of all, there is no such thing as a liquor scam. We formulated the best and most transparent policy in the country,” he said when asked about the CBI summoning Sisodia.

The same policy implemented in Punjab has led to a 48-per cent rise in revenues, the chief minister said.

“In Delhi, they have framed the case as a result of political vendetta and conspiracy. Manish will go there and we will fully cooperate. Finally, the truth will prevail,” he said.

At another press conference, Sachdeva posed questions to Kejriwal, asking why a court denied bail to one of the accused in the case on four different occasions and whether Sisodia had any contact with the other accused.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader also wondered why did the deputy chief minister frequently change his mobile phones.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri alleged that the liquor “scam” involved an amount of Rs 6,000 crore and asserted that the truth will come out after the CBI probe.

BJP MP Parvesh Verma said the “liquor scam” of the AAP government has been “exposed” before people and Kejriwal is now defending Sisodia.

The CBI has called Sisodia for questioning in connection with the excise policy case nearly three months after filing the chargesheet.

Sisodia has not been named as an accused in the chargesheet as the probe against him and other suspects is still going on, officials said.

The deputy chief minister, who also held the charge of the excise department, was first questioned by the federal agency on October 17 last year and his house as well as bank lockers were also searched in connection with the case.

In a tweet in Hindi, Sisodia said nothing incriminating was found against him during the searches and he would continue to cooperate in the investigation.

“The CBI has called me again tomorrow. They have used the full power of the CBI, the ED against me, raided my house, searched bank lockers, but nothing was found against me,” he said.

In an apparent reference to the BJP-led Centre, the deputy chief minister said the CBI has been made to go after him because “they” want to stop his “good work” in the education sector for the children of Delhi.

The CBI is now focused on the alleged influence of a “south lobby” of businessmen and politicians on the formulation and implementation of the liquor policy to swing it in their favour, using middlemen, liquor traders and public servants, officials said.

It is alleged that the Delhi government’s policy to grant licences to liquor traders favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for those, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP.

  • Act of political vendetta: BJP MLA Raja Singh on police notices

Act of political vendetta: BJP MLA Raja Singh on police notices

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Suspended Goshamahal BJP MLA T Raja Singh denied making any provocative speeches and asked the Hyderabad police which issued him a show cause notice to drop the same.

The Mangalhat police had issued a notice to Raja Singh for a provocative speech he made at a rally in Mumbai on Sunday. The police cited the conditions of the Telangana High Court while granting him bail in connection with a case booked for making derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad last year. The court, while giving him bail, said that the MLA should not make provocative speeches or post on social media.

In his reply to the notice served on him by the Mangalhat police, Raja SIngh said these actions are expected in the light of fact that elections are approaching and to create fear in the mind of political opponents. This, he said, is evident from the series of actions since the “malicious invoking of Preventive Detention Act” was made against him. “I reasonably believe, it is an act of political vendetta and your esteemed machinery is put into action under force,” he stated.

He further stated that the contents of the notice express that the Hyderabad police took “suo –motu cognizance” of his speech at Mumbai. He said it was beyond the jurisdiction, and that it was taken without any complaint from anybody to the said effect.

    Singh denies all wrongdoing

“I categorically deny having made any provocative statements or speech, deny having violated the Honourable High Court orders and well deny all adverses allegations levied against me under the show cause notice under reply. The notice is an act of creating unwarranted pressure on me and an attempt to meddle with my fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression and my right to public meetings and gatherings and my duty as a public representative. The rally was held under due permission and no complaint as such till the day the notice under reply is issued is known to have been lodged anywhere in context to alleged speech you refer to in your notice,” Raja Singh added.

Singh asked to explain statements in notice

The high court had quashed his detention under the PD Act and released him in November on bail after his arrest. The court however imposed certain conditions for his release, including that Raja Singh should not make any provocative speeches against any religion or post any derogatory or offensive posts on any social media platforms.

“But on January 29 your speech during ‘Janakrosh Morcha’ at Dadar was circulating in social media. In the video your speech is very much provocative to a particular community regarding demands of laws on love jihad, cow slaughter, conversion and a few other words,” the notice issued to Raja Singh by the Mangalhat police stated.

It further added, “Your speech with potential to provoke a particular religion is violation of conditions imposed by the HC.” The police has asked Raja Singh to explain why action should not be initiated against him for violating the conditions imposed by the High Court.
