Indian students restricted from 5 Australian varsities over fake visas: Reports

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Indian students are reported to have been restricted from around five Australian universities over fraudulent visa application cases.

According to reports emerging from sections of Australian media, it has been alleged that migrants from India used the student visa system as an easier alternative to access work rights in Australia.

Reports further said that cases of sham visas are on the rise and therefore, Australian authorities have restricted entry of Indian students.

These reports quoting investigations by leading Australian newspapers like “The Age” and “The Sydney Morning Herald”, said that mails obtained from some known universities of that country, showed the crackdown on applications from Indian students.

With Australia expecting a huge surge of Indian students this year, the reports said that cases of expected visa fraud have raised concerns within authorities.

Signing of a wide ranging agreement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, will also allow easier travel for studying in both countries. This too is likely to pose a challenge to authorities to prevent cases of sham visas, reports said further.

  • More than 2000 posts lying vacant in Telangana varsities

More than 2000 posts lying vacant in Telangana varsities

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Posts of more than 2,000 professors and assistant professors in 11 universities of the state are lying vacant, affecting the education of students. At present, there is no possibility of starting the process of appointment for these posts immediately.

Seven months ago, the government approved a common recruitment board in the Assembly, which was pending with the governor for a long time. After the government approached the Supreme Court, Governor T Soundararajan approved three bills, returned two bills to the government and two bills were referred to the President, including the Common Recruitment Board Bill for the promotion of universities.

Until a decision is taken by the President, the process of appointment on the vacancies of professors and assistant professors in the state’s universities will not begin. More than 2,000 professors and assistant professors’ posts are lying vacant in eleven universities in Telangana. Teaching work is being done using the services of contract staff.

    MS Education Academy

In the year 2017, it was decided to appoint 1061 professors and assistant professors on vacant posts by issuing GO 34, but the appointments have not been made yet. For the appointment of professors, the UGC has issued some guidelines in the year 2018. In light of these guidelines, the state government has considered amending the Universities Act for appointments on the vacancies of assistant professors.

It has been decided to conduct the common entrance test for the appointment of assistant professors. In this regard, the formation of the Common Board amended the Universities Act and sent a special bill to the Raj Bhavan by approving it in the Assembly. The governor kept the bill pending for seven months and has now referred it to the President.

The stalemate over the pending bills and the petition filed by the BRS government last month in the Supreme Court has given an unprecedented turn to the rift between the government and the Governor.

The BRS leaders are targeting the Governor for what they call running a parallel system, undermining the people’s elected government.

Hyderabad: UoH tops Nature Index rankings among Indian varsities

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) continues to be in the top position in the latest Nature Index rankings. The UoH has been ranked first among Indian universities and 16th among all institutions in India in the academic sector.

The Nature Index indicates high-quality research in the Natural and Physical Sciences (including Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and the Physical Sciences).

While expressing his delight at UoH’s continued presence at the top position among the Indian universities, the Vice Chancellor, Prof BJ Rao said, “We have been performing well in all disciplines and compared to last year our share has increased. Being a multidisciplinary university our performance is very good. Glad our university is in the top against the top 100 universities in the world, in the respective disciplines. I must congratulate all at the UoH for this performance and let’s all put in our best to be at the top globally”.

The rankings are based on the Nature Index data from 1 December 2021 – 30 November 2022. The UoH received a count of 66 and a share of 20.26 under the academic sector.

A Count of one (1) is assigned to an institution if one or more authors are from that institution. The ‘share’ is a fractional count that takes into account the percentage of authors from that Institution and the number of affiliated institutions per article. The maximum combined share for any article is one (1).

  • All central varsities must adopt CUET for UG exams: UGC to AMU, Jamia

All central varsities must adopt CUET for UG exams: UGC to AMU, Jamia

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has written to Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia, reiterating that all central universities have to mandatorily adopt the Common University Entrance Test for admission to undergraduate programmes.

“UGC (University Grants Commission) has asked all the central universities to use CUET (Common University Entrance Test) scores for admissions to all the courses. However, this has been observed that Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has opted to participate in CUET-2023 for a limited number of programmes/courses, as was done last year.

“Please note that all the central universities, including AMU, are required to participate for all UG programmes in CUET 2023 to provide equal opportunities to aspiring candidates, which is in the student’s best interests,” the UGC said in the letter.

The letter also stated that CUET provides a common platform and equal opportunities to candidates across the country, especially those from the northeast, rural and other remote areas, and helps to establish better connections with the universities.

“A single examination enables the candidates to cover a broad outreach and be part of the admission process to various central and participating universities,” the letter added.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has no plans to implement CUET for admissions across all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses and will stick to its own entrance test to “ensure timely admissions” for the upcoming academic session, the vice-chancellor said earlier this week.

The UGC introduced CUET last year for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

JMI, however, did not adopt the CUET for all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

While JMI opted for CUET for admission to 10 undergraduate programmes last year, the number is likely to rise this year.

The AMU has also announced that it would opt for CUET for limited courses.

According to UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar, CUET has been introduced as a level playing ground for students in undergraduate course admissions.

He said, “For the 2023 academic session, already about 120 universities have signed up. UGC also has written to all the Central Universities that their UG course admissions should be based on only the CUET score. Last year, UGC permitted a couple of central universities to use CUET scores in a limited number of UG courses since CUET was introduced for the first time in 2022.

“However, from the 2023 academic session onwards, all the central universities must use CUET scores in all the UG course admissions. Even if there are reservations for a particular category of students, such as local students in a central university, they should still use CUET scores only for all categories.”
