  • My most romantic moment: my wife made me a Valentine’s heart – and defeated her artistic demons

My most romantic moment: my wife made me a Valentine’s heart – and defeated her artistic demons

    [ad_1]

My wife is amazing at a lot of things: spotting a typo from 10 paces, retaining obscure facts about medieval English food customs and, as seems almost obligatory these days, making sourdough bread. The one thing she is absolutely awful at, however, is art. Back in the 80s, her art teacher wrote in her end-of-year report: “Claire has a tendency to be highly experimental – which I would praise, were it not for the fact that her examination pieces were experiments which appeared to have gone very badly wrong.”

I tell you this not in order to publicly shame her – how could I, as the owner of a D-grade German O-level? – but to highlight how wonderful it was when, in 1996, on our first wedding anniversary, AKA our “paper” anniversary, she presented me with a papier-mache heart that she had sculpted with her own fair hands.

There is something undeniably romantic about gestures that involve artistic creation. It’s the willingness to lay it all on the line, the readiness to make oneself vulnerable, that I admire. All the more so when you have been told that, at best, you are a “trier”, while, at worst, you are in danger of negatively skewing your school’s exam results.

Mike Gayle and his wife, Claire
Mike Gayle and his wife, Claire.

When, with no small degree of meekness, my wife handed me a large box wrapped in gift paper on the morning of our anniversary, I eagerly tore it open, fully expecting to find a copy of Independence Day on VHS (I had been dropping hints like crazy) or a box of cherry liqueurs (my favourite of all the confections). Instead, lying on a bed of tissue paper in an old shoe box was the aforementioned papier-mache heart. I loved it immediately.

The idea had come to her, she told me, after trawling the aisles of HMV for gift inspiration. Finding none, it dawned on her that she should instead make something – something made from paper.

Several weeks later, having gathered all the materials together – wallpaper paste, a couple of small cereal boxes, old newspapers and paint – she began her first art project since leaving school. Whenever I was out of the house, she would add a couple of layers of gluey paper to the boxes, which she had sandwiched together to make a basic frame for the heart. Day by day, layer by layer, she sculpted and moulded her work until it resembled the organ classically perceived as the seat of the emotions. Finally, after a week of drying it out in the airing cupboard (a place I never ventured, clearly), she added the first of several coats of paint.

The papier-mache heart made for Mike Gayle by his wife
    Claire’s love heart.

The time and effort my wife put into her creative endeavour was an obvious, but nonetheless utterly gorgeous, metaphor for her love for me. Had she given me a copy of the classic Will Smith movie or a customary box of chocolates, I would undoubtedly have been pleased. But I can also guarantee that the video would have long since been dispatched to Oxfam, the liqueurs regretted as soon as I stepped on the bathroom scales.

A quarter of a century later, however, the heart still has pride of place on a shelf in our living room. Its bright-red paint might be chipped and faded, its paper-and-glue surface more than a little fragile, but it’s there watching over us nonetheless, having become a regular talking point with our kids and houseguests. It’s an exquisite reminder of our love – and why you shouldn’t always listen to your art teacher.

Mike Gayle is the author of Museum of Ordinary People and A Song of Me and You, which will be published in July (Hodder & Stoughton)

  • Valentine’s Day celebrated across country, right-wing outfits play spoilsport

Valentine’s Day celebrated across country, right-wing outfits play spoilsport

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Couples – young and old – celebrated Valentine’s Day on Tuesday with flowers and gifts even as a few right-wing outfits played spoilsport in some parts of the country.

Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh celebrated the occasion as “cow love day” while the Bajrang Dal held mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa to oppose the “spread of western culture”.

After two years of muted festivities due to the Covid pandemic, the festival of love was in full bloom with people flocking to malls, restaurants and popular hangout zones in different parts of the country.

With abundant snowfall turning the Kashmir landscape white this winter, love birds made a beeline to resorts such as Gulmarg in north Kashmir and Pahalgam in south Kashmir.

“We came to this beautiful Valley to make Valentine’s Day a memorable one. The weather is nice and I am feeling lucky that we were able to plan the celebrations in Kashmir,” Madhya Pradesh native Saket Sharma said.

However, members of outfits like the Bajrang Dal were again out on the streets targeting couples accusing them of “indulging in vulgarity” in the name of love.

Bajrang Dal members drove away couples from a garden in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar and organised mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

In a video of the incident that went viral on social media platforms, nearly 10 Bajrang Dal activists armed with sticks were seen shouting slogans and driving away couples sitting inside the Central Vista garden located opposite the Assembly complex in Gandhinagar.

While the Opposition Congress strongly condemned the act, the Gandhinagar police swung into action and summoned Bajrang Dal activists involved in the protest.

Shaktisinh Zala, convener of the Bajrang Dal’s Gandhinagar unit, said the outfit’s members entered the garden to register their protest against Valentine’s Day, which he claimed, reflected “western culture”.

“We were not harassing anyone. Bajrang Dal workers were only opposing western culture and people indulging in vulgarity in the name of love today. It is our duty to show the right path to Hindu youths and daughters,” Zala told reporters.

Sources said police officials have summoned protesters seen in the viral video for questioning.

In Nagpur, Bajrang Dal members protested against Valentine’s Day by taking out a rally in the city and organising mass recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa at Durga Mata Temple in the Sadar area.

The rally passed through prominent areas of Nagpur and a large number of police personnel were deployed on the route to prevent untoward incidents.

The rally concluded at the Samvidhan Square, where tributes were paid to the CRPF personnel killed on February 14, 2019, in a terror attack at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides Bajrang Dal members, functionaries of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) were also present on the occasion.

Shiv Sena (UBT) activists raised slogans against Valentine’s Day celebrations and displayed oil soaked sticks to deter couples from celebrating the festival of love in public on Tuesday in Sagar town of Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh minister offered jaggery and rotis to cows on Valentine’s Day and said that they should be treated as mothers.

He said there is no animal like a cow in the world whose “mal-mutra” (stool and urine) is “pious”.

“We have three mothers — our mother, who gives us birth, ‘gau mata’ (cow) and Bharat Mata. First love should be for our mother, then ‘gau mata’ (cow) and then Bharat Mata ‘ko pranaam karna chahiye’ (should be saluted),” the minister said.

Singh offered gud’ (jaggery) and rotis to cows in the Bakshi ka Talab area here to mark the day.

He urged people to celebrate “cow love day” on Valentine’s Day.

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had on last Monday appealed to the people to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’.

The directive was later withdrawn on the directions of the government after the move became the subject of memes on social media.

To “show love to those who need it the most”, Delhi-based NGO Wishes and Blessings treated more than 2,000 impoverished children, including HIV positive, visually impaired, orphans and homeless, throughout Delhi-NCR to cupcakes on the day.

Okhla, Vasant Vihar, Nizamuddin, Munirka, Noida, Gurgaon, Madipur village, Sarai Kale Khan, Sadiq Nagar, and Maharani Bagh were some of the areas where the cupcakes were distributed, Geetanjali Chopra, Founder of the NGO said.

“We are very grateful to have a group of compassionate bakers and volunteers who have come together to show love to those who need it the most,” Chopra said.

UP minister celebrates Valentine’s Day as cow love day’

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharmpal Singh on Tuesday celebrated Valentine’s Day as “cow love day” by offering jaggery and rotis to cows and said that they should be treated as mothers.

He said there is no animal like a cow in the world whose “mal-mutra” (stool and urine) is “pious”.

“Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated all over the world. There are many relations like mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, and one’s love should be expressed,” Singh told reporters.

“They (people) should go to a ‘gaushala’ (cow shelter home), feed roti to a cow and pray to her,” Singh said.

“Even a simple visit to ‘Gaushala’ can keep tension away as there is an emotional connect to it. By entering ‘Gaushala’ the door to development opens. There are no such animals (like cows) in the world whose ‘mal-mutra’ (stool-urine) is pious. Its dung and urine are also pious. In cow’s dung lives Lakshmi,” the minister added.

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had on last Monday appealed to the people to celebrate February 14 as ‘Cow Hug Day’. The directive was later withdrawn on the directions of the government after the move became the subject of memes on social media.

Singh had on Saturday appealed to people to celebrate February 12 by expressing love and faith towards cows by offering them gud and rotis.

Besides, people should seek blessings of cows by touching their head and neck, the minister had said.

“Gavo Vishwasya Matarah in vedas means the cow is the mother of the world. Therefore, on this day, one should resolve to serve the mother cow regularly,” he had said.

Singh also said cow dung should be used on the occasion of ‘Holika Dahan’ as it is environment-friendly and reduces air pollution.

  • Nepal bans rose import ahead of Valentine’s Day

Nepal bans rose import ahead of Valentine’s Day

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: The Nepali government has banned the import of fresh roses from countries like India and China ahead of Valentine’s Day, according to a media report on Friday.

The Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre under the Ministry of Agriculture in a notification on Thursday directed the subordinate border offices not to issue the import permit for rose flowers, citing the risk of plant diseases.

The centre banned the import of rose flowers citing special reasons in a written direction to 15 customs offices of Nepal, India, and China borders, My Republica newspaper reported.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated annually on February 14.

The notice states that roses cannot be imported from Kakadbhitta in the east to Gadda Chowki in the west and any customs points in the north.

“All the offices under the centre are requested not to issue rose flower import permits unless there is another arrangement for special reasons,” the notification said.

The Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre said that due to the risk of plant diseases, the import has been stopped for the time being.

Mahesh Chandra Acharya, information officer of the centre, said the import was immediately stopped due to the possibility of diseases and insects in the vegetable products.

“It is seen that there is a risk of disease in roses and other plants. Therefore, import is stopped for a time being as there is no proper study about such diseases,” Acharya said.

“Since the meeting of the technical committee is still pending, further decisions will be taken only after the meeting,” Acharya was quoted as saying.

According to the details of the Customs Department, Nepal imported 10,612 kg of rose flowers worth Rs 1.3 million in the first six months of the current fiscal year.

JB Tamang, the programme coordinator of the Nepal Floriculture Association (NFA), said that the government’s decision would now cause a shortage of roses in the market.

According to the NFA, nearly 300,000 sticks of rose flowers are sold in Nepal around Valentine’s Day. He said that only about 20,000 pieces of rose flowers are produced in Nepal.

Traders say almost 80 per cent of the requirement for red roses is fulfilled through imports, the Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

According to the NFA, demand for long-stem red roses explodes to 150,000 stems on Valentine’s Day.

Most local flower growers can come up with 30,000-40,000 stems, and the rest have to be imported from India. Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata are the largest suppliers of red roses to Nepal.

Kerala: Will Pinarayi ‘hug a cow’ this Valentine’s Day? quips Congress

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: Soon after reports of a new Rs 49-lakh cow shed at Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence surfaced, State Congress president K.Sudhakaran took a swipe at Kerala Chief Minister asking him whether he will “hug a cow” this Valentine’s Day.

“With a state-of-the-art cow shed at Vijayan’s official residence, the only thing that now remains to be seen is whether the chief minister will celebrate Valentine’s Day as a Cow hug day,” asked Sudhakaran.

The latter never misses any chance to attack Vijayan by pointing out that till date the CM has not attacked neither Modi nor Amit Shah.

On being asked by the media on Thursday, all Vijayan said was first it was stated that there was a music system installed in the cow shed, then came another report without any mention of it.

Neither denying nor confirming the reports, Vijayan, said, “All that happened is there was damage to the compound wall of the residence and everything was handled by the concerned departments.”

Immediately after the statement, the concerned government order that gave the sanction for the cowshed at a cost of Rs 49 lakhs surfaced in the media.

The trolls in social media also had a field day trolling the state government over its “hypocrisy”.

One of the incidents which is now being discussed is when legendary four-time Congress Chief Minister K.Karunakaran met with a serious road accident, he was advised to go swimming. After swimming at a state-run hotel in the capital city, a decision was taken to build a pool at the official residence.

This was met by huge protests by the then top CPI(M) leader and three-time former Chief Minister E.K.Nayanar who said if the Left returns to power, the pool will be used to bathe the dogs.

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'(DDLJ) will have a Pan-India release across India, Yash Raj Films confirms.

Rohan Malhotra, Vice President, Distribution, YRF, said, “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has become synonymous to romance for India and Indians for generations since it’s historic release. We are constantly requested by the audience and fans, throughout the year, for a wider showcasing of the film so that they can, again and again, watch this milestone-setting film with their friends and family in theatres! This year, on the occasion of Valentine’s Day, we are making their wish come true. DDLJ will be screened across India, starting Feb 10, for a period of one week only!”

‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, a 1995 romantic blockbuster, is the longest-running movie in the history of Indian cinema and continues to enjoy its screening at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre. It is one of the biggest IP’s emerging from the Indian film industry. ‘DDLJ’ has shaped pop culture for India and Indians over the generations

  • 62% of Indians want ChatGPT to write love letters this Valentine’s

62% of Indians want ChatGPT to write love letters this Valentine’s

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Around 62 per cent of Indians who were surveyed are planning to use the AI chatbot ChatGPT to help write their love letters this Valentine’s Day, the highest out of all the countries surveyed, with 73 per cent also using AI to boost their dating profiles, a report showed on Thursday.

With ChatGPT starting to infiltrate every aspect of our daily lives, 78 per cent of Indians surveyed were also unable to spot the difference between a love letter written by the AI chatbot and the one written by a human, according to the report by cyber-security company McAfee.

The vast majority (60 per cent) of Indian respondents preferred a machine-generated love note.

The most popular reason given for using AI as a ghost-writer was that it would make the sender feel more confident (59 per cent), others cited lack of time (32 per cent) or lack of inspiration (26 per cent), while 14 per cent said it would just be quicker and easier, believing they would not be found out.

However, 57 per cent of respondents said they would be offended if they found out the note they had received was produced by a machine.

“With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s important to stay vigilant and use security solutions that can help safeguard your privacy and identity and protect you from clicking on malicious links a scammer might send,” said Steve Grobman, McAfee Chief Technology Officer.

“It is easy to drop your guard when chatting to a potential partner but it’s important to be on alert if you’re asked suspicious requests for money or personal information,” Grobman added.

With the rise in popularity of artificial intelligence, particularly tools such as ChatGPT that anybody with a web browser can access, the chances of receiving machine-generated information are on the rise.

In fact, 76 per cent of Indians admit to being catfished — which is when somebody pretends to be someone they’re not online — or knowing somebody who has.

Additionally, 89 per cent of Indian respondents have engaged in direct conversations with strangers on social media across platforms, compared to 66 per cent globally.

“Those looking for love are often more vulnerable to scams, and cybercriminals use that to their advantage, engaging in long, sophisticated attempts to steal from their victims,” said the report.
