Instagram now puts ads in user search results

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Meta-owned Instagram has announced it will put ads into the platform’s search results to reach people actively searching for businesses, products and content.

Ads will show up in the feed that people can scroll when they tap into a post from search results.

“We plan to launch this placement globally in the coming months,” the company said in a blog post.

Instagram also announced ‘Reminder’ ads which are rolling out to all advertisers as an option in feed.

The move is to help advertisers build awareness, anticipation, and consideration for upcoming moments.

“People can opt into convenient reminders and receive three notifications from Instagram one day before, 15 minutes before, and at the time of the event,” said Instagram.

People come to Instagram to discover new brands, products or upcoming events.

The company said it aims to give businesses more ways to get discovered and form meaningful connections.

“We recently partnered with brands such as Starz to test a new ad format that makes it easier for businesses to announce, remind and notify people of future events or launches that they might be interested in,” it added.

The photo and video sharing platform has been adding more and more ads over the years.

Ads are now seen in Explore page, Explore feeds, Reels, Stories, and even user profiles.

  • India 1st in South Asia on govt requests for user data from Big Tech firms

India 1st in South Asia on govt requests for user data from Big Tech firms

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India has been ranked first in South Asia based on government requests for user data from Big Tech companies, a report showed on Monday.

From 2013 to 2021, Meta and Google received the highest number of account requests from India, according to popular VPN service Surfshark.

India ranked seventh in all of Asia with 58.7 accounts requested per 100,000 people.

The research showed that globally, countries requested more than 6.6 million accounts combined during the 9-year period, while India requested 823,000.

The overall disclosure rate in India is 55.3 per cent, said the report.

Looking at requested accounts per population, India ranks 36th in the world based on the user accounts requested by authorities over this time period.

The number of accounts requested increased more than five times from 2013 to 2021, with 2021 seeing a year-over-year increase of around 25 per cent.

India shows the same trend, with a 1,476 per cent increase from 2013 to 2021. Requested accounts grew by 55 per cent in 2021 compared to 2020, the report showed.

In total, over 6.6 million accounts were requested in 177 countries from 2013 to 2021, with a steady increase in the latest years.

The US and the EU authorities requested data the most.

Apple complied with the most user data requests (82 per cent), compared to Meta, Google, and MicrosoftA (72 per cent, 71 per cent, and 68 per cent, respectively).

“Besides requesting data from technology companies, authorities are now exploring more ways to monitor and tackle crime through online services. For instance, the EU is considering a regulation that would require Internet service providers to detect, report, and remove abuse-related content,” said Gabriele Kaveckyte, Privacy Counsel at Surfshark.

The research analysed the just-released information on user data requests that Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft received from 177 countries’ local authorities between 2013 and 2021.

‘Don’t deliver bhaang’, Zomato tells user; Delhi Police joins in

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As Holi posts and memes flood social media ahead of the festival of colours, a post by Zomato saying that they “don’t deliver bhaang ki goli”, has gone viral.

Twitter user Shubham had been repeatedly enquiring if the platform delivers “bhaang ki goli”.

In response, Zomato said: “Someone please tell Shubham from Gurgaon we don’t deliver bhaang ki goli. He has asked us 14 times”.

Delhi Police also joined the conversation, posting: “If anyone meets Shubham…. tell him not to drive if he consumes Bhaang”.

The tweet caught the attention of many on the platform and drew several reactions.

“Hello @zomato, I live in Delhi not Gurugram. It has been a ritual to consume Bhaang on Holi every year, more so because my birthday falls on Holi. Please try to understand my situation,” a user replied to Zomato’s tweet.

‘Bhaang’ is made from the leaves of the cannabis plant and is usually consumed in Holi mixed with “thandai” or in some foods. When the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act classified cannabis as a “drug” in 1985, it exempted bhaang on social and cultural grounds.

  • Case on Mohammed Zubair’s tweets: HC pulls Delhi police over inaction on abusive user

Case on Mohammed Zubair’s tweets: HC pulls Delhi police over inaction on abusive user

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the police if it has taken any action against a Twitter user who had allegedly abused fact-checker and Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair on the platform.

A single-judge bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani was hearing a plea by Zubair challenging an FIR registered against him for a tweet by him in response to an abusive message with username Jagdish Singh.

The police had booked the petitioner and to quash the case, the latter moved the High Court.

The judge noted that the police has not named the petitioner in the charge sheet because it did not find any criminality against him, and asked if they have taken the case to a logical end.

“What did you do about this gentleman called Jagdish Singh. My question is if you found nothing against this man (Zubair), what did you do about the person who put out those offensive tweets,” he asked.

The case stems from an incident which took place in 2020, wherein the petitioner had called out Singh through his tweet for being a troll.

Zubair had retweeted his display picture, which featured his daughter but after pixelating/ blurring her image.

The tweet read: “Hello Jagdish Singh. Does your cute grand daughter know about your part time job of abusing people on social media? I suggest you to change your profile pic.”

This was followed by two FIRs against Zubair a month later in Delhi and Raipur.

They were filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) for allegedly “threatening and torturing” a minor girl on Twitter.

The court said: “Somebody (Jagdish Singh) starts a storm and you (Delhi Police) just say this person’s (Zubair’s) name is not in charge sheet therefore… I want to see if things are coming to a logical closure.”

It listed the matter for the next hearing on March 13 due to unavailability of advocate Nandita Rao who was appearing for the Delhi Police.

The court also asked Zubair’s counsel to inform the court about the status in the FIR registered against him in Chhattisgarh.
