Turkey’s Erdoğan urges end of Ukraine war in call with Putin

    [ad_1]

Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Saturday called for the “immediate cessation” of the war in Ukraine during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Erdoğan also “thanked President Putin for his positive stance regarding the extension of the Black Sea Grain Initiative” and added that the two countries “could take further steps” when it comes to economic cooperation, the Turkish presidency’s communications directorate said in a statement on Saturday.

The Black Sea grain deal, which allowed the export of foodstuffs from Ukraine to resume after Moscow’s unlawful invasion of the country blocked several ports, was extended last weekend. The grain agreement was originally signed last summer by Kyiv and Moscow under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Kremlin said in a statement following the Putin-Erdoğan phone call that the two leaders also discussed the situation in Syria.

They emphasized “the need to continue the process of normalizing relations between Turkey and Syria” and “Russia’s constructive role as a mediator,” according to the statement.

Telangana: KCR urges BRS cadre to dispel ‘misinformation campaign’ of opposition

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Monday exhorted his party cadre to reach out to people ahead of elections this year and dispel the “misinformation campaign” of opposition parties.

In an open letter addressed to BRS “family members”, he slammed the BJP for attacking the BRS that is working for the country by taking up the slogan of ‘Ab ki baar, kisaan sarkar’ (This time around, a government for farmers).

The BJP-led Central government is creating hurdles for the development of Telangana, he claimed.

Noting that the BRS has a history of defeating “conspiracies and attacks”, Rao said the state of Telangana would not have been a reality had BRS felt fearful about such attacks in the past.

He also said Telangana, which once only had “problems, tears and droughts”, has now emerged as a role model for the entire country by implementing various welfare schemes that cater to all sections of society.

Meanwhile, Rao said the country is faced with problems related to drinking water, availability of food for the poor, irrigation facility to agriculture and electricity supply.

Alleging that the BJP and Congress lacked vision and resolve for development, he said a new journey has been started in the form of BRS to influence national politics.

The BRS had earlier alleged that the NDA government misused investigation agencies like CBI and ED and also harassed several BRS leaders, including party MLC K Kavitha.

Bengaluru: Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju on Sunday appealed to lawyers to join the Tele Law programme and support judges in creating legal awareness.

At an event organised by the Karnataka BJP legal cell, Rijiju underlined the role played by lawyers in facilitating justice for people, and appealed to them to provide legal aid to help people get justice.

“The Karnataka Legal fraternity is ready for the battle,” the Union Law Minister said, adding, “I also appeal to lawyers to join the Tele Law programme and support the judges in creating legal awareness and to provide legal aid through NALSA (national), SALSA (state)) and District Legal Services Authorities to deliver justice at the doorstep of people.”

Lauding the Karnataka BJP legal cell, Rijiju said that it, like the entire legal fraternity, had been working hard to ensure that the “development works initiated for Karnataka by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would continue uninterrupted with the double engine government at the Centre as well as in the State”.

  • Union minister Amit Shah urges youth not to abandon mother tongue

Union minister Amit Shah urges youth not to abandon mother tongue

    [ad_1]

Vadodara: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday asked the youth never to abandon their mother tongue.

Addressing the graduating students of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda here at its 71st convocation, he also asked them to study the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.

“I would like to tell all degree-holders that do whatever in your life, but never abandon your mother tongue. Come out of this inferiority complex that (mastering a particular) language will give you acceptance,” he said, speaking in Hindi.

“Language is an expression and not a substance. There can be any language for expression. When a person thinks and conducts research and analysis in his mother language, the capacity for the same increases many times. Along with analysis, it increases his capacity for logic and decision- making,” he said.

One’s mother tongue is the best medium for personality development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said.

“The languages of our country have the best grammar, literature, poetry and history, and unless we enrich them, we cannot improve the future of our country,” Shah added.

For this reason, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thought of “making mother tongue compulsory in primary education” under the NEP, he said.

He also urged the graduating students to study the NEP, which he said will clear their concepts about the use of education.

The NEP includes “Maharaja Sayajirao’s idea of accessible education, Sardar Patel’s idea of empowerment, Ambedkar’s idea of knowledge, Aurobindo’s idea of cultural and nationalistic education and Gandhi’s emphasis on mother tongue,” Shah said.

Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the erstwhile ruler of the Baroda state, tried to establish an exemplary governance system, he said.

Dr B R Ambedkar framed our Constitution which is “among the best” in the world, Shah said, adding that he could accomplish this because (early in his life) Maharaja Gaekwad had given him a scholarship.

Gaekwad worked to spread education, establish justice, uplift the deprived sections, provide irrigation for farmers and carry out social reforms. He worked to provide compulsory and free education, and laid the foundation for the Faculty of Fine Arts, Shah said.

The NEP has tried to make education “stream-less and classless,” he said.

“When it becomes so, you can think freely. The aim of education is not to gain a degree, good job, to get comforts in personal life. Its aim can be to become a complete human, and it is possible only when education is streamless and classless, and which is why (PM) Modi-ji has tried to make it so,” he said.

The NEP was the first education policy in the country that did not face opposition from (the proponents of) any ideology or political party, the Union minister claimed.

Earlier in the day, Shah inaugurated a redeveloped lake at Nardipura and laid foundation stones for various developmental projects at Kalol in his Lok Sabha constituency of Gandhinagar.

He also chaired a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committees (DISHA) in Gandhinagar.

US urges Turkey to ‘quickly’ ratify Sweden’s NATO membership

    [ad_1]

Washington: After Turkey approved the process of ratifying Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the US welcomed the decision of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and said that America encourage Ankara to “quickly ratify Sweden’s accession protocols as well.”

In the statement, released by the White House, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said, “The United States welcomes President Erdogan’s announcement that he will send Finland’s NATO accession protocols to the Turkish Parliament and looks forward to the prompt conclusion of that process.”

“We encourage Turkey to quickly ratify Sweden’s accession protocols as well. In addition, we urge Hungary to conclude its ratification process for both Finland and Sweden without delay,” he added.

In the statement, Sullivan further stated that Sweden and Finland, both countries are strong, capable partners that share NATO’s values and will strengthen the Alliance and contribute to European security.

“The United States believes that both countries should become members of NATO as soon as possible,” the statement read.

Earlier, Turkey approved the process of ratifying Finland’s accession to NATO.

According to the Anadolu Agency, President Erdogan at a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto in Ankara noted that Finland had addressed all of Turkey’s security concerns.

In the press conference, Erdogan said, “We have decided to launch the approval process of Finland’s NATO membership protocol in our Parliament.”

Citing negotiations on Sweden and Finland’s accession bids at the NATO Madrid summit in June 2022, Erdogan said that Turkiye is among the strong defenders of NATO’s open-door policy.

The President further stated that Turkey has seen that Finland had taken concrete steps to fulfil its commitments in the tripartite memorandum which was signed at the Madrid summit in June, last year, according to Anadolu Agency.

“NATO will become stronger with Finland’s membership, and I believe it will play an active role in maintaining global security and stability,” Erdogan added.

He further emphasized that Turkey-Finland relations will be strengthened on the basis of the NATO alliance following the completion of the approval process.

On Sweden’s process, Erdogan said that Turkey will continue its talk on the basis of the principles of the alliance and our approach to the fight against terrorism.

“I believe that our country’s principles and goodwill in advancing the (NATO accession) process is now more clearly seen,” he added.

  • Imran Khan urges party to persist in struggle amid scuffle between police and supporters.

Imran Khan urges party to persist in struggle amid scuffle between police and supporters.

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Imran Khan Tuesday asked his supporters to stand up for their rights and continue the struggle even if he is killed or arrested, hours after clashes erupted between the police and his party workers who gathered outside his residence here to foil his arrest in the Toshakhana case.

Khan’s video message was released by his party on social media as police arrived at his Zaman Park residence to arrest him.

Police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse Khan’s supporters, who reportedly hurled stones at policemen, resulting in injuries.

In the video message, Khan urged his supporters to come out for real freedom as police arrived to arrest him. “They think that after my arrest, the nation will fall asleep. You have to prove them wrong,” 70-year-old Khan said in the video.

“God has given me everything, and I am fighting this battle for you. I have been fighting this battle all my life, and I will continue to do so,” he said.

“If something happens to me and I am sent to jail or if I am killed, you have to prove that you will struggle without Imran Khan and not accept the slavery of these thieves and of the one person who has been making decisions for the country,” he said.

A senior police officer of Islamabad police said that his team has come here to arrest the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman in the Toshakhana case.

Khan has been in the crosshairs for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

TV footage showed police slowly approaching the Zaman Park residence of Khan behind an armoured vehicle that was dispersing his supporters with a water cannon.

Khan’s supporters, who had covered their faces with pieces of cloth, pelted stones at policemen.

According to reports, Islamabad Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Shahzad Bukhari, who was leading the police team, was injured. He was seen walking with the help of two officials. Both Khan’s supporters and policemen were injured in the clashes.

PTI leader Shireen Mazari shared a video in which tear gas could be seen entering Khan’s residence.

“They’re shelling Imran Khan’s house too, a leader who requested everyone to stay peaceful and patient. Democracy seems to be suspended in the country, no?” the official Twitter handle of the party tweeted.

Meanwhile, the party’s deputy leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the PTI leadership is ready to find out a “possible way out” to avert bloodshed.

“Show me the warrant. I will first read and understand it. Then, I will speak to Imran Khan and my lawyers,” he told the police.

Khan’s party moved the Islamabad High Court against the arrest warrants issued in the Toshakhana case.

Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq fixed the hearing for Wednesday while rejecting the party’s request to conduct the hearing today.

The plea has been fixed for hearing tomorrow (March 15) despite the objections raised by the registrar’s office, Khan’s lawyer Ali Bukhari said.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, however, said that officials would arrest Khan in accordance with the court’s directives and produce him in court.

The official Twitter handle of the party earlier urged supporters and workers to gather outside the residence and ‘remain peaceful’.

A large number of PTI workers equipped with clubs and sticks were present outside Khan’s residence to resist the police action.

The police blocked all roads leading to the house of the PTI chairman by placing containers and riot personnel took positions to launch the operation.

Senior PTI leader Farukh Habib told reporters that come what may Imran Khan would not surrender to police in fake cases. “The arrest warrants in the case related to threatening a female judge were today suspended by the Islamabad High Court. Let’s see what new warrants police have brought with them now,” Habib said.

One activist of Khan’s party was killed on Wednesday during a crackdown on his supporters who gathered outside his residence in Lahore, defying a government ban on rallies in the city.

On Monday, the Lahore police had booked Khan in a case related to the killing of the PTI worker – Ali Bilal alias Zille Shah – in a road accident.

Earlier, the Lahore police had registered an FIR against Khan and 400 others for the murder of Shah. “The new FIR has been registered against Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry, Dr Yasmin Rashid and a number of other PTI men for abetment to murder, concealing facts and evidence related to the death of Zille Shah,” a senior police officer told PTI.

He said the police may arrest Khan and others nominated in the FIR after direction from the “top”. The PTI had accused the police of murder of Shah after inflicting brutal torture on March 8.

This is the 81th FIR against Khan since the PML-N led federal coalition came into power 11 months ago after toppling his government through a no-confidence motion.

Khan Monday led a march of thousands of his supporters, a day after he called off his party’s election rally following a ban on public gatherings in Punjab’s provincial capital. The former cricketer-turned-politician’s supporters threw rose petals at a convoy carrying him to Data Darbar shrine.

Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Since his ouster, Khan has been clamouring for immediate elections to oust what he termed was an “imported government” led by prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Sharif has maintained that elections will be held later this year once the parliament completes its five-year tenure.

  • ‘Red Alert’ report urges Australia to prepare for war with China in 3 years

‘Red Alert’ report urges Australia to prepare for war with China in 3 years

    [ad_1]

Canberra: ‘Red Alert’ – a joint report of Australian newspapers – The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, warned the country to prepare for war with China in the next three years, reported Taiwan News.

The independent report, entitled “Red Alert,” was authored by five security analysts, namely – Alan Finkel, Peter Jennings, Lavina Lee, Mick Ryan and Lesley Seebeck and published by the Nine Entertainment media group.

The report indicates that a conflict involving Taiwan and China is much more likely than most Australian citizens realize, reported Taiwan News.

The general view of the analysts is that Australia is not ready to be drawn into a war involving China and Taiwan, but that the country should begin preparing with a sense of urgency.

Further, given the country’s alliance with the US, it would be very difficult for Australia to avoid involvement in a war, the report said.

“An attack on Taiwan is the subject of most speculation but not the only scenario which would threaten Australia’s security and prosperity. Australia must not prepare itself for a single scenario. Instead, it must put a priority on flexibility to deal with many contingencies. Democracies rarely predict their next war, and the next war is guaranteed not to be like the last,” the report added.

“Our assessment of the risk of war is based on President Xi Jinping’s aggressive stance and rapid military build-up,” the Red Alert report read. It suggests a three-year time frame because, according to the analysis, “a tipping point” will be reached around 2027, after which “Beijing will have military superiority over the US in the Taiwan Strait.”

The analysts also factor in China’s demographic crisis. They suggest that from Xi’s perspective, there is only a limited window in which China will be capable of pursuing such a large scale military operation, reported Taiwan News.

“Xi judges China to have greater political will than the US and its allies. Yet Xi must fear that this advantage could be temporary as China’s population shrinks and its economy slows. This window of opportunity will not be open for long. Xi may be tempted to strike at the moment of greatest opportunity. A weakening China is no less dangerous,” added the report.

On the issue of whether the Australian government would support the US and Taiwan in a conflict, one analyst, Mick Ryan said the decision has already been made. “We have made our choice. If the United States goes to war with Taiwan, we are going to support them one way or the other,” he said.

Australia finds itself in a precarious position, because its greatest trading partner is also the greatest potential threat to its sovereignty. The analysts believe that Canberra would not be able to resist involvement because the consequences of allowing China to conquer Taiwan would imperil the regional and global order, and thereby, Australia’s own livelihood, reported Taiwan News.

“Any attack on Taiwan is neither a marginal matter nor a local one. If successful, it would strike at the heart of global norms that have underpinned international security and prosperity . . . South-East Asia and the Pacific island states could then be dominated by Beijing. Australia’s commercial and security lifelines to the world would operate only at Beijing’s pleasure. Australia would be highly vulnerable to economic coercion, military intrusion or both,” states the report.

US urges Pakistan to improve its business environment

    [ad_1]

Washington: The United States Thursday urged Pakistan to improve its business environment which would make the South Asian country more attractive and competitive around the world.

Pakistan is under a severe economic crisis and is in an advanced stage of talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance.

State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at a news conference here that Pakistan has encountered economic headwinds of late.

“The Pakistani people are facing record levels of inflation. Of course, this comes on the back of the extensive flooding through parts of the country. And it has only put a spotlight on our need to continue to work together to help the Pakistani people to help put themselves on a sustainable economic path and a durable path to the prosperity that we seek for the Pakistani people,” he said.

There’s a reform agenda that the Pakistani government is in the midst of. “We encourage Pakistan to continue working with the IMF, especially on reforms that will improve Pakistan’s business environment. And we know that doing so will ultimately make Pakistani businesses more attractive and competitive around the world,” Price said.

Pakistan, he said, is a country with tremendous potential, and the US has partnered with Pakistan. “We want to make sure that the resources that Pakistan has itself, the resources that the United States is contributing, that other countries are contributing and the resources that have and will continue to come from international financial institutions, they’re managed responsibly as part of responsible and responsive governance,” Price said.

  • Give Maha two more airports, Aditya Thackeray urges Scindia

Give Maha two more airports, Aditya Thackeray urges Scindia

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT)’s ex-Minister Aditya Thackeray on Wednesday urged Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia to sanction two new airports in Palghar and Fardapur (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), and sought clarity on the status of the proposed airports in Pune and Nashik.

He said that the development of these airports would boost progress and enhance passenger connectivity, industry, agriculture and tourism in these regions.

Thackeray Jr. referred to the Union Budget 2023-2024 and welcomed the plans for 50 airports/helipads/ports to be developed/upgraded in the country, but since details were lacking leading to confusion, he asked Scindia to accord priority for civil aviation development in Maharashtra.

He pointed out that during his tenure as a Maharashtra Minister, his focus was to push several key projects including a third airport for Mumbai at Palghar and the development of the Fardapur airfield.

While the Navi Mumbai Airport will be ready soon, Mumbai will require a third airport in the next 10 years, and the former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked the Maharashtra Airport Development Company to start working on the Palghar airport.

This, he claimed in the 2-pager, would provide many benefits, including a revenue generator if it turned out to be a passenger airport, cargo hub and offer parking facilities for aircraft.

On the Fardapur project which the Thackeray government was exploring, Thackeray Jr. said that thousands of tourist flock to view the marvels of Ajanta-Ellora caves in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), but the nearest airport there is 160 kms away, making the trip arduous.

Thackeray Jr. also urged Scindia to resolve the issues pertaining to the Nashik and Pune airport – the latter’s expansion plans or a new airport has been a long-debated demand that can afford the state’s cultural capital a global connectivity.

Referring to Nashik, he said it is a matter of great pain as it is one of the holiest cities with a rich heritage like Pune and needs to be tapped with an airport of global standards.

“I have only mentioned a few of Maharashtra’s multiple points of potential and roadblocks in the sector of civil aviation, directly linking it to industry, agriculture, tourism growth… I hope you will take cognisance of my humble request and give justice to Maharashtra’s civil aviation needs,” Thackeray Jr concluded.
