Assam BJP MLA urges PM Modi to demolish Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: As the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) revised its books for various classes, including the Class 12 History textbook by omitting the chapters on the Mughal empire, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Assam on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demolish monuments such as Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar.

“I urge the Prime Minister to immediately demolish the Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar. In place of these two monuments, the world’s most beautiful temples should be built. The architecture of those two temples should be such that no other monuments could be even closer to them,” the legislator said.

Kurmi further said that he is ready to donate at least his one-and-a-half year’s salary for construction of the temples.

    MS Education Academy

The latest change would apply to all the schools in the country that follow the syllabus of the NCERT.

The NCERT said that the changes will be applicable from the current academic session — 2023-2024.

Notably, in the latest changes in the Class 12 syllabus, the chapters related to the Mughal Empire were omitted from History textbooks by NCERT, while a few poems and paragraphs were also removed from the Hindi book.

The “Themes of Indian History-Part II” textbook’s chapters on the Mughal Court, monarchs, and their history have been eliminated from the updated curriculum.

It is to be mentioned that Rupjyoti Kurmi, four-time MLA and once an ardent critic of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, switched from the Congress to the BJP in June 2021.

He earlier won the Mariani assembly seat on Congress ticket.

After joining the BJP, Kurmi was re-elected to the Assembly from the same constituency.

He said that there is a need for a united struggle on the problems faced by unemployed but the party’s state committee will decide whom to join hands and how to carry forward the movement.

The TJS leader said the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) paper leak has created unrest among students. He alleged that the BRS government is playing with the lives of students.

Kodandaram said Class 10 question paper leak for last two days once again proves the negligence of the government.

Sharmila said T-SAVE will be a joint platform for all the political parties to converge and pledge their commitment and fight for the cause of the educated and unemployed youth of the state.

She invited all parties to set aside differences and join T-SAVE.

Vote for any party but not TMC, BJP’s Suvendu urges people

    [ad_1]

Chandrakona: Donning a white T-shirt with his ‘No Vote to Mamata’ slogan on it, leader of opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday addressed a rally in Paschim Medinipur district, urging the people to vote for any party in the panchayat elections but not the TMC.

Addressing the rally in Chandrakona, Adhikari claimed that a BJP government in the state can accelerate the development of West Bengal as it will work in synergy with the Centre.

“I would urge the people not to cast their votes for this corrupt TMC. Vote for any party or candidate you like, but please don’t cast your valuable votes for this party of thieves,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

“If those opposed to the TMC stick to their single-point agenda of removing it from power, then this corrupt regime can be ousted,” he added.

Criticising the ‘No Vote to BJP’ campaign ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, Adhikari coined the ‘No Vote to Mamata’ slogan, which he used extensively during the Sagardighi bypolls in Murshidabad district. The Congress with the support of the Left Front won the by-election last month in a major setback to the TMC.

Amid criticism by the TMC that the state BJP was working in an understanding with the Congress and the CPI(M), Adhikari had earlier clarified that “No Vote to Mamata” doesn’t mean a call to vote for the other two opposition parties.

TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said his party enjoys “solid support” of the people of the state, and the results of the upcoming elections would prove it.

“We all know that the CPI(M), BJP and the Congress have formed an unholy alliance in West Bengal. But, this nexus will be defeated by the TMC with the support of the people of the state,” he said.

‘Don’t help a villain’, China urges Japan not to back US tech restriction

    [ad_1]

Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang on Sunday urged his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi not to “help a villain do evil” by backing the US tech restrictions against Beijing as the two ministers held rare talks here amid China’s increasing criticism against Tokyo’s backing for Washington-led Indo-Pacific strategy.

The United States “used bullying tactics to brutally suppress the Japanese semiconductor industry, and now it is repeating its old tricks against China”, Qin told Hayashi.

“Japan has suffered that pain, and should not help a villain do evil. The containment will only further stimulate China’s determination to become self-reliant,” Qin said, according to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.

    MS Education Academy

The talks between the two ministers took place two days after Japan announced it would restrict semiconductor equipment exports from July, following months of lobbying by the US.

The two countries should “overcome obstacles and move forward”, Qin said, adding that “clique-forming” and containment was “not helpful” to managing conflicts, in an apparent reference to Japan’s backing for the Indo-Pacific strategy.

China opposes the Quad comprising the US, India, Japan and Australia, saying that it is aimed to contain its rise.

“Peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation are the only correct choices for China-Japan relations,” he said.

“In the face of contradictions and differences, forming cliques, exerting pressure through rhetoric will not help solve the problem, but will only deepen the estrangement between each other,” he said.

“(We) hope that Japan will establish a correct understanding of China, show political wisdom and responsibility, and work together with China to strengthen dialogue and communication, and promote practical cooperation,” he said.

This was the first visit by the Japanese Foreign Minister to China since 2019.

China and Japan have a long-festering dispute over uninhabited East China Sea islands controlled by Japan but claimed by China.

The islands are called as the Senkakus by Japan, while China named them as Diaoyu.

Taiwan also claims the islands but has forged agreements with Japan to avoid any conflict as Japan maintains close defence ties with Taipei.

Ahead of Hayashi’s visit, China and Japan on Friday set up a military hotline to strengthen their capability of managing and controlling maritime and air incidents arising out their aggressive patrolling of the disputed waters in the East China Sea.

Hayashi said the two countries were neighbours separated by “a narrow strip of water”.

China is also opposing Japan’s move to discharge nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Qin asked his Japanese counterpart to handle the disposal responsibly, as it is a major issue concerning public health and the safety of humanity.

On the question of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of it, Qin said it is the very core of the core interests of China, which bears on the political foundation of China-Japan relations. He asked Tokyo to refrain from interfering in the Taiwan question or undermining China’s sovereignty in any form.

In the case of a Japanese citizen suspected of engaging in espionage activities in China, Qin stressed China would handle it following relevant laws.

According to Japanese media reports, Hayashi’s talks with Qin lasted around four hours, longer than the planned two and half hours. The two also agreed to resume trilateral dialogue with South Korea.

Hayashi also met Premier Li Qiang and had dinner with top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi.

  • Israeli Prez urges immediate dialogue between PM, oppn over contentious judicial overhaul

Israeli Prez urges immediate dialogue between PM, oppn over contentious judicial overhaul

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israeli President Isaac Herzog has urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition leaders to immediately engage in a dialogue, a day after the government suspended a contentious plan to overhaul the judiciary.

Herzog’s office said in a statement on Tuesday that the first meeting with teams of representatives from the ruling coalition, Yair Lapid’s centrist party of Yesh Atid and Benny Gantz’s National Unity party will meet at the president’s residence in Jerusalem later in the day, reports Xinhua news agency.

Herzog said he would work “in broad cooperation for the benefit of forging as broad agreements as possible, with the aim of rescuing Israel from the deep crisis.” He urged both coalition and opposition “to show responsibility” and agree to compromise.

On Monday night, following a day of unprecedented strikes and protests that led to the shutdown of the airport and chaotic situations in some parts of the country, Netanyahu announced in a live televised address that he was suspending the legislation of the controversial plan until April 30.

Netanyahu said he has decided to suspend the legislation in order to “allow time to try and reach a broad agreement” on the reforms.

“In any case,” the legislation blitz will resume after the Knesset, or Parliament, reconvene after the Passover holiday break on April 30, he said.

The overhaul, proposed by the ruling coalition and aimed at curbing judicial power, has divided the country for weeks, with tens of thousands taking to the streets in demonstrations and blocking major highways across Israel and rallying outside the Knesset in Jerusalem.

On Monday, factories, banks, shopping malls and local authorities participated in the general strike and shut down services.

  • Pakistan PM Sharif urges parliament to curtail powers of Chief Justice

Pakistan PM Sharif urges parliament to curtail powers of Chief Justice

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said that “history would not forgive us” if parliament did not enact laws to curtail the powers of the chief justice, a day after two Supreme Court judges questioned the suo motu powers of the country’s top judge.

Addressing the joint session of parliament, Sharif talked at length about the dissenting judgement by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail of the Supreme Court, who lashed out at the unlimited authority of the Chief Justice to take a suo motu (on its own) action on any issue and constitute benches of choice to hear different cases.

Their judgment was about the case of suo motu notice taken by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on February 22 about elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Speaking passionately about the need for new laws to limit the chief justice’s power, Sharif said that if the legislation were not passed, “history would not forgive us”.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Cabinet has reportedly approved the draft of a legislation on Tuesday seeking to curtail the discretionary powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

The bill, a copy of which is available with the newspaper, says that a committee of the three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court would decide on any suo motu case being taken up by the apex court under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution.

The suo motu power is based on the original jurisdiction of the court under Article 184 of the Constitution. However, its usage over the years has created an impression of partiality on the Chief Justices’ part.

It was openly challenged for the first time by the two judges who were part of a bench that, in its 3-2 majority decision of March 1, directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to consult with President Arif Alvi for polls in Punjab and Governor Ghulam Ali for elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The five-member bench was reconstituted by Bandial, who took a suo motu action against the delay in elections and initially formed a nine-member bench to deal with the issue. However, two of the nine judges differed with the decision to take suo motu notice, while two other judges recused themselves, prompting the Chief Justice to form a new bench.

Justice Shah and Justice Mandokhail, in their detailed 28-page dissenting note, also rejected the 3-2 judgment in the suo motu case by saying that it was a 4-3 judgment to reject the maintainability of the case and lambasted the Chief Justice’s power to form a bench for important cases.

The coalition government led by Prime Minister Sharif, which is supporting the ECP’s decision to delay the election in the two provinces until October 8, is trying to use the parliament to curtail the powers of the Chief Justice.

The premier also said that the courts were treating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan favourably and were not ready to hold Khan accountable.

Sharif said that “enough is enough” and the law would take its course while the government would not allow “the favourite” to play with Pakistan.

He added that the Constitution clearly defined the division of powers between the legislature, judiciary and administration and set a red line that no one should cross.

The powers of the legislature defined by the Constitution and the powers of the judiciary were being flouted, the prime minister said.

The joint session of parliament was summoned last week to discuss the key issues confronting Pakistan and provide guidelines to deal with those issues.

The development comes as the top court is hearing a case about the decision of the Election Commission of Pakistan to postpone the provincial election till October 8, well beyond the 90 days deadline by the constitution to hold elections after the dissolution of an assembly.

  • Israel Prez Isaac Herzog urges PM Netanyahu to halt judicial overhaul

Israel Prez Isaac Herzog urges PM Netanyahu to halt judicial overhaul

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israel’s President Icon Monday appealed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to immediately halt his controversial judicial overhaul, warning that the move has put the country’s security, economy and society under threat.

Herzog’s remarks came after Prime Minister Netanyahu sacked Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for opposing his judicial reforms, sparking widespread street protests.

The president also called on the government to put aside political considerations for the sake of the nation.

“Last night we witnessed very difficult scenes. I appeal to the Prime Minister, members of the Government, and members of the Coalition: there are harsh and painful feelings. The entire nation is rapt with deep worry,” Herzog said.

“Our security, economy, society all are under threat. The whole people of Israel are looking at you. The whole Jewish People are looking at you. The whole world is looking at you,” the ceremonial president in a statement.

“For the sake of the unity of the People of Israel, for the sake of the necessary responsibility, I call on you to halt the legislative process immediately,” he emphasised.

He urged all the leaders in power to place country’s citizens above all else.

“I appeal to the leaders of all Knesset factions, Coalition and Opposition alike, to place this country’s citizens above all else and to act with courage and responsibility without further delay. Wake up now! This is not a political moment; this is a moment for leadership and responsibility,” the president asserted.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Israel last night after Prime Minister Netanyahu fired Defence Minister Gallant after he said on Saturday evening that the judicial overhaul “poses a clear, immediate, and tangible threat to the security of the state”.

Irked by the televised speech given by Gallant, the Prime Minister’s Office in a terse statement on Sunday evening said that “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided, this evening (Sunday, 26 March 2023), to dismiss Defense Minister Yoav Gallant”.

The announcement led to spontaneous unprecedented outburst of anger against the prime minister.

An unconfirmed Channel 12 report said that 600,000-700,000 Israelis were demonstrating late on Sunday across the country, with protests reported from Kiryat Shmona in the north to Eilat in the south.

Protesters in Tel Aviv blocked a main highway and lit large bonfires, while police scuffled with protesters who gathered outside Netanyahu’s private home in Jerusalem.

The unrest sparked by Justice Minister Yariv Levin’s proposals to shake up the judiciary by severely curbing the High Court of Justice’s judicial review powers and the government’s efforts to cement political control over the appointment of judges has met with resistance not only in the streets of the country but also abroad with thousands of Jewish diaspora members protesting during Netanyahu’s visits to Italy, Germany and the UK.

The protests have alarmed business leaders, former security chiefs and drawn concern from Israel’s close allies, including the United States.

The country has also seen economic disruption with talk of “flight of capital” and hi-tech leaders and firms.

The head of the Histadrut labour federation was due to give a press conference later on Monday, amid growing calls for a strike following the firing of Gallant.

The Histadrut said that trade unionist Arnon Bar-David would give a “special” statement alongside business chiefs and union leaders, without detailing what he will announce.

Several Hebrew media reports said he was expected to declare a strike.

The National Student and Youth Council, representing high school and middle school students, declared a nationwide strike to start Monday morning.

The council has called for “halting the [overhaul] legislation and starting negotiations immediately”.

There were unconfirmed reports in the Hebrew media that Netanyahu is expected to make an announcement this morning. He has been holding meetings with political allies for most of the night.

There has been no formal confirmation on this.

As protests intensified accompanied by an unforeseen display of anger, some Likud ministers relented, beginning to show their willingness to compromise.

Culture Minister Micky Zohar, a Netanyahu confidant, said the party would support him if he decided to pause the judicial overhaul.

Protest organisers, mostly common people with no declared political affiliation, continued to push for further demonstrations on Monday.

Political analysts see the development as a “grassroots movement” beyond the control of any political formation. The opposition though has been fully supportive and participating in the protests.

Legislation, which many argue is aimed at establishing executive’s supremacy over judiciary, making it subservient to the government, is slated to come for the final readings this week in the Knesset.

With the government unrelenting and moving ahead with the “reforms”, the protests have also been peaking and the country seems somewhat paralysed.

Internal differences within Israeli society have also intensified recently with the country looking broadly divided in two large blocs over the question of judicial overhaul.

Though the current governing coalition has committed to several controversial legislation, the biggest debate revolves around its push to increase political control over the judiciary.

Three key proposals being discussed are a move to legislate an “override clause” by which the Knesset can reinstate any law invalidated by the Supreme Court, put judicial appointments under political control as opposed to the current hybrid political-professional-judicial appointments panel, and to split the role of the Attorney General as both the head of the state prosecution and the government’s legal adviser.

Analysts feel that the controversial steps proposed emanate from the desire to protect Netanyahu, who is facing trial in three different cases, but altogether it serves the interest of all those included in the coalition in some way addressing each party’s concerns.

Seen at the receiving end of international ire, including a rebuke from US President Joe Biden, Netanyahu has looked weak and perplexed but also hesitant to step back from the proposed “reforms” because of fear of backlash within his ruling Likud party.

Selena Gomez urges fans to stop sending ‘death threats’ to Hailey Bieber

    [ad_1]

Los Angeles : Actress-singer Selena Gomez has finally broken her silence about her alleged feud with supermodel Hailey Bieber.

On Friday, Gomez took to Instagram Story and shared a message after learning about the immense criticism Hailey has been receiving.

    ANI 20230324131207

“Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity. This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want all of this to stop,” Gomez urged her fans and followers.

Gomez also started following Hailey on Instagram in a show of support.

This isn’t the first time Gomez trying to get fans to stop scrutinizing Hailey, although this is her first time explicitly referring to Hailey by name.

On March 6, Selena thanked fans for their support on her TikTok and added, “Please, please be kinder and consider others mental health. My heart has been heavy, and I only want good for everyone. All my love.”

Reportedly, the feud between Hailey and Gomez started when the Rhode Skin founder appeared to bully the “Heart Wants What It Wants” singer online.

A few months ago, Hailey posted and then deleted a video where she, Kendall Jenner and Justine Skye mouthed the audio, “I’m not saying she deserved it, but God’s timing is always right.”TikTok users surmised that Hailey was referring to Gomez, who, at the time, had just responded to being fat-shamed.

The beef between the two celebrities dates back to 2018 when Hailey Bieber got engaged to Justin Bieber just months after he ended his relationship with Gomez, whom he dated on and off for eight years, for good.

Andhra urges Centre to extend SC status to those converting to Christianity

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Friday passed two resolutions, one urging the Centre to include the Boya/Valmiki community in the list of the Scheduled Tribes, and second to extend Scheduled Caste status to members of the community who converted to Christianity.

Earlier, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy assured the Assembly that the inclusion of the Boya/Valmiki community in the list of the Scheduled Tribes would not affect the STs living in the agency areas in the state.

He sought to allay the fears that the inclusion of the Boya/Valmiki community people living in the Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, and Chittoor districts into the ST list will reduce the quota of the STs of the agency areas in government jobs or educational institutions as zoning system is in force as per the six-point formula.

The inclusion may have only negligible impact on the Group 1 jobs which come under the non-zoning category. It becomes negligible as only 386 Group 1 jobs were notified in the last 10 years and the 6 per cent reservation only amounts to a meager 21 or 22 posts, he said, adding it only means negligible.

The one-man Commission, headed by Samuel Anand Kumar, studied the social and economic conditions of the Boyas in the four districts and the ST Commission, also agreed with this assessment, said the Chief Minister.

Government jobs in the zoning system and districts constitute 99 per of the total jobs and the STs of the agency areas would suffer no loss because of the possible inclusion, he asserted, asking them not to believe the false propaganda being carried out in a section of the media on this.

He said the resolution was introduced in the House requesting the Centre to include the Boya/Valmiki community in the list of the Scheduled Tribes as per the promise given to the community during his Padayatra.

On another resolution that sought approval of the House to request the Centre to extend Scheduled Caste status to members of the Scheduled Caste community who converted to Christianity, the Chief Minister said that the economic and social status of the people doesn’t change automatically just because they convert to another religion.
