The Kerala Story: Giriraj Singh urges Nitish Kumar to declare film tax-free in Bihar

    [ad_1]

Patna: Union Minister Giriraj Singh Tuesday urged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to declare the film ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free in Bihar.

The film, directed by Sudipto Sen, has been declared tax-free in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh among other states.

The union minister on Tuesday wrote to the Bihar CM urging to make the movie tax-free in the state.

    MS Education Academy

“The recently released movie ‘The Kerala Story’ is very important and based on contemporary social issues. The movie has already been declared tax-free in several states including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh etc. So I request you to give necessary instructions to the authorities concerned to make it tax-free in Bihar as well,” Singh said in his letter.

He also shared the letter on his Twitter handle.

The film ‘The Kerala Story’ has been at the center of a controversy since it was released last week. BJP leaders have supported the film and urged other states to follow suit. The West Bengal government announced a ban on the film on Monday to “maintain peace” and avoid any incident of hate crime and violence.

‘The Kerala Story’, which stars Adah Sharma, highlights the issue of alleged forced conversion and radicalisation of women in Kerala, which sparked controversy as soon as its trailer was released. Sen and producer, Vipul Amrutlal have said that the film is based on true events.

Raj Thackeray urges to protect pre-historic Petroglyphs, opposes refinery plan

    [ad_1]

Ratnagiri: Adopting a significant stance, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) President Raj Thackeray on Saturday batted for tourism while opposing the proposed Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd (RRPCL) project coming up in this picturesque region where prehistoric Petroglyphs were discovered.

Addressing a public meeting here, Raj Thackeray said the Petroglyphs found here are still being studied and analysed and as per international norms, no development activities can be carried out in its vicinity.

The astounding Petroglyphs in and around Barsu were discovered in 2012 and have already made it to the Unesco’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites and locals now fear that if the RRPCL comes up here, this pre-historic site would be lost forever, he said as a caution to the Central and state governments.

    MS Education Academy

Interestingly, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray went around the Petroglyphs site along with the Barsu villagers who are opposing the refinery project.

“When the RRPCL project was announced for Barsu, I was very upset. Why can’t such big projects go to Goa or Kerala? The beautiful Konkan is intended only for tourism. Only Konkan tourism is sufficient to support the entire (economy) of Maharashtra,” Raj Thackeray said.

He warned the people of Konkan against selling off their valuable land at cheap rates “to politicians and businessmen who are aware of big projects coming up all around and then make huge profits from your land”.

The MNS chief strongly advised Konkanis that henceforth, if anybody wants to buy out their beautiful and fertile lands, “first ask them what’s the purpose” before parting with it, otherwise “you will have nothing but regrets”.

Raj’s unexpected stance — which could be music to the locals and the Shiv Sena (UBT) — may prove to be jarring for the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party which has been hoping for a partnership with the MNS.

Ironically, during the day, former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) President Uddhav Thackeray, visited Barsu where he threw his full lot with the people opposing the refinery project, even as the BJP launched a sharp attack on him.

Referring to the proposed sea-memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj off the Mumbai coast, the MNS chief — estranged cousin of Uddhav Thackeray — also questioned the need to spend over Rs 10,000 crore on the monument planned for the great Maratha warrior-king in the Arabian Sea.

“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj constructed several sea-forts dotting the Konkan coast. Why can’t the memorial funds be diverted for their upkeep and renovation? That’s our real legacy. Will you leave statues for the future generations to view?” Raj Thackeray demanded.

He also expressed his ire over the long delays for the upcoming Mumbai-Goa highway which has been pending proper completion since 2007 and is a road traveller’s nightmare.

“Why such a long delay? Have you ever questioned your elected representatives? What’s taking so many years for the project to come up? Today, someone told me that the contractors for one of the sections has abandoned it,” Raj Thackerary said in an incredulous tone.

The MNS leader also took potshots at his cousin Uddhav Thackeray, asking why there are differences in his party – Shiv Sena (UBT) – with some opposing and others supporting the refinery plans.

He also accused Uddhav Thackeray of allegedly ‘usurping’ the sprawling former Mayor Bungalow at Dadar west (Mumbai) in the name of the late Balasaheb Thackeray Memorial, and asked whom he had asked for it.

This was Raj Thackeray’s first foray into the Konkan region in several years and he conceded that he “was keen since long to come and discuss the problems of the people here”.

India urges G20 countries to collaborate, focus on evidence-based research

    [ad_1]

Washington: Ahead of the annual India-US BioPharma and Healthcare Summit to be attended by scientists, academicians, corporate leaders, and officials from both the countries, a top Indian official has urged the G20 countries to collaborate and focus on evidence-based research.

“I urge G20 member countries, businesses, academics, and scientists to collaborate and focus on evidence-based research and analytics to ensure preparedness in health systems and build adaptable global supply chains that can deliver instantaneously during a crisis,” Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa said in a statement issued by the USA-India Chamber of Commerce (USAIC) on Sunday.

The USAIC also announced to hold its 17th annual BioPharma and Healthcare Summit on May 3 virtually.

    MS Education Academy

Kant said G20 member countries share equal responsibility for ensuring robust and resilient health systems to provide health security to citizens.

The Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering (RIIG), Science20, Startup20 under G20 aim to achieve socio-economic equity through research, innovation, partnership and collaboration, he said.

“Global collaboration and partnership in drug and vaccine development, clinical research, streamlining workflows, inventory management will mitigate risks and allow seamless delivery of health care services,” said Kant, who would be addressing the conference along with other Indian government officials and industry leaders, including Dr. Vinod Paul, Member, NITI Aayog, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Dr. Shiv Sarin, and Dr. Krishna Ella.

US FDA commissioner Dr. Robert Califf is participating in the summit.

Other important participants include Johnson & Johnson’s Chairman and CEO Joaquin Duato; Pfizer’s Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla; Biogen’s CEO Christopher Viehbacher, Merck’s former Chairman and CEO Kenneth Frazier along with top venture capitalists, academic leaders from Harvard, MIT, MD Anderson and Global Research and Development heads of Takeda, Sanofi, Amgen, Novartis, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, demonstrating the interest of global BioPharma companies to collaborate with India.

Andrew Plump, president of R&D, Takeda, and Chair, of USAIC BioPharma and Healthcare Summit said the increasing pace of scientific innovation over the last few decades has resulted in extraordinary advances in healthcare and it is imperative that they ensure people across the globe have access to them.

“This year, with India on track to become the world’s most populous country, our responsibility to ensure its people benefit from these innovations that improve human health has never been greater,” he said.

“I see India on the path to becoming an innovation powerhouse in BioPharma in the coming years. India has tremendous needs and potential in the area of BioPharma and Healthcare Innovation. After 17 years of consistent efforts by the USAIC, we are very encouraged to see good progress and positive signs of India embracing BioPharma innovation,” said Karun Rishi, president of USAIC.

“India has enacted several pragmatic policies to drive innovation and bring much-needed investment into the country to make it an R&D leader. Measures undertaken by the Indian government in the last few years have prepared the ground for R&D in India. Now we should work towards scaling it up, be it in R&D, translational research, industry-academic partnerships, clinical trial or manufacturing,” he said.

BioPharma companies are digitising their operations with cloud-based technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other digital solutions, he said, adding that this is changing how we discover, develop and deliver health innovation.

This offers tremendous opportunity for India. India has the talent, infrastructure, and capacity to play a critical role in the digital and data science area, Rishi added. “With India assuming G20 Presidency this year, it is time to elevate the level of discussion about BioPharma R&D, Clinical Trials and Global Supply Chain. The summit will have a special session to discuss this by bringing together G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant and industry leaders. G20 is a very powerful group. It is important for India and the rest of the world that there is an honest discussion on access and availability as a key priority for equitable access to BioPharma innovation,” Rishi said.

“How can the industry and the G20 leadership work together to make this happen? Today’s healthcare challenges are complex. A united global response will be more effective than individual countries acting independently. India’s leadership at G20 this year can be a defining moment to address these critical issues for patients worldwide,” he said.

According to Hari Bhartia, Founder and co-Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group, India has an excellent opportunity to leverage its strong tradition in pharmaceuticals to expand into biologics and biosimilars.

“It provides a favourable ecosystem for developing biotechnology and healthcare businesses, with a wide variety of qualified talent pools, world-class infrastructure and business-friendly policies. The country has invested heavily in infrastructure, such as state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities with global accreditations and advanced laboratories with cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence and machine learning to support drug discovery and development research,” he said.

“India’s strategic move towards BioPharma innovation is a positive development for patients worldwide. With global partnerships, it will play a critical role in developing quality therapy products at an affordable price,” Bhatia added.

Rishi said to foster innovation and help the industry, USAIC is offering free registration for the annual summit. This has attracted over a thousand medical students and researchers globally to participate in the annual summit.

“I am encouraged by the response of young colleagues. They are the future leaders in the healthcare and life science industry. We must do everything to help the next generation of leaders,” he said.

The transporting of migrants from the Southwest to cities led by Democrats — some have been dropped off at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington — has become a hot button issue, particularly when migrants show up in communities that have not had prior warnings about when they would arrive. New York Mayor Eric Adams has been particularly outspoken about the hardships his city is facing, though he has also been sharply critical of President Joe Biden for not dealing with the situation at the border.

Officials in border states have blamed the Biden administration for the influx of migrants and said they are trying to distribute the burden of having to accommodate all these people. In discussing sending migrants to Washington in 2022, Abbott said: “We are sending them to the United States capital, where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.”

Abbott’s press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Lightfoot’s note.

In her letter, Lightfoot complained that some migrants have arrived “in dire need of food, water, and clothing” and echoed criticism that these migrants are being used as political pawns.

“I know by your actions that you either do not see or do not care about the trauma these migrants have already faced and continue to suffer under the humanitarian crisis you have created,” she wrote. “But I beseech you anyway: treat these individuals with the respect and dignity that they deserve.”

Lightfoot recently lost her bid for a second term, finishing third in the election Feb. 28 out of nine declared candidates. Cook County Board Commissioner Brandon Johnson, who subsequently defeated Paul Vallas in a runoff, is to be sworn in as mayor May 15.

IWPC urges government to take empathetic view on wrestlers’ demands

New Delhi: The Indian Women’s Press Corps on Saturday urged the government to take an empathetic view of the issues raised by the protesting women wrestlers demanding a probe against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.

In a statement, the IWPC said it stands in solidarity with the women wrestlers. It also deplored any form of harassment and sexual exploitation of women sportspersons.

“These women wrestlers have made our country proud and have been sitting on protest for several days now. As women sports professionals, they need to be supported and encouraged,” it said.

“We urge the government to take complete and empathetic cognisance of their issues in the interests of a speedy, impartial and fair investigation,” it added.

The country’s top wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, launched a second round of protest against Singh, who is also a BJP MP, at Jantar Mantar on Sunday over allegations of sexual harassment and intimidation.

As the chorus of support for the protesting wrestlers grew, Delhi Police on Friday filed two FIRs against Singh on allegations of sexual harassment levelled by seven women wrestlers.

  • As a billionaire king is crowned, he urges us to do some charity work. Welcome to Britain | Frances Ryan

As a billionaire king is crowned, he urges us to do some charity work. Welcome to Britain | Frances Ryan

    [ad_1]

Don’t have plans for the coronation bank holiday? Fear not. The king invites you to join the Big Help Out, a national day of volunteering designed to mark the new reign. Or as the Telegraph breathlessly describes it, a “tribute to Charles’s many decades of public service”.

The Big Help Out will, according to the official website, “give everyone an opportunity to join in”. What acts of charity would Buckingham Palace like us to join in with, exactly? Squeezing out toothpaste for an elderly neighbour, perhaps. Or staffing a local art centre (do remember not to take the art home with you).

With the cost of living crisis leading to growing hardship across the country, especially in the poorest communities, there is said to be a national shortage of volunteers to meet the demand for them. Organisers were hoping the Big Help Out would inspire a new wave of volunteering, but some in the charity fear the event will be “damp squib”, due to lack of participants.

Is one really shocked? A man whose car collection alone is estimated to be worth more than £6m asking the rest of us to celebrate his kingship by helping out at the local food bank feels, shall we say, a little “let them eat quiche”.

Volunteering can be hugely rewarding, and many organisations are in desperate need of more help, but there may be better ways to promote the cause than an event that is literally about deference to hereditary privilege. People who are already working every hour just to put food on the table hardly need a billionaire to ask them to use their day off to do more.

As commentary on this country’s relationship with class goes, it could only be more crass if one of the volunteering jobs on offer was for families to scrub King Charles’s golden carriage with their electricity bills.

Charity, monarchy fans insist, is a longstanding personal interest of the royal family. In the runup to the coronation, the Princess of Wales made a “previously unannounced” visit to Windsor’s baby bank for deprived newborns (photographers were there entirely coincidentally, you understand). More than 850 community and charity representatives have been invited to the coronation to show the king’s deep respect for their work and 400 young volunteers will also watch from St Margaret’s church, Westminster Abbey.

No news as yet as to whether any representatives from HMRC have been invited. Royals always seem to prefer ad hoc charity work to taxation, much like the boss of Amazon or the Victorians. The £1bn Duchy of Cornwall estate – previously inherited by Charles and recently passed on to Prince William – is not liable for either corporation tax or capital gains tax.

But don’t worry, according to the duchy’s website, under Charles’s leadership, the estate’s annual multimillion-pound revenue was used to fund his “public, private and charitable activities”. Charles notably didn’t pay a single penny of inheritance tax on the fortune the late Queen left him last year (the jewellery alone was estimated to be worth at least £533m), though he has “volunteered” to pay income tax, as he also did on the duchy estate. “Volunteering” to pay tax always feels a little like a wanted criminal “volunteering” to hand himself over to the authorities. It doesn’t seem to be something you typically get a choice in.

For the little people, tax isn’t a hobby – it funds the key services we all rely on. Indeed, the “crisis in volunteering” that the Big Help Out hopes to fill has largely been created by years of government cuts, all while the richest have hoarded and increased their wealth. Over the last decade, local councils have faced £15bn in real-terms cuts with neighbourhood services such as parks, libraries and children’s centres “hollowed out” since 2010.

There is apparently no money for Sure Start centres but you’ll be relieved to hear ministers have found £8m to offer every public body a free portrait of King Charles. Oliver Dowden, the new deputy prime minister and patriot in chief, says the portraits would bring the nation together. So would working hospitals.

The coronation itself is estimated to be costing the public purse anywhere from £50m to £100m. Charles’s personal fortune is thought to be almost £2bn, but as anyone who has ever gotten a £60 ticket to St Pancras on expenses knows, a 1.3-mile coronation precession can very much be put down as a “work trip”.

In the coming days, there will be endless commentators ready to declare that the coronation makes them “proud to be British”, while anyone who criticises any aspect of it will be accused of “hating their country”. I have never quite understood the mindset that feels more pride in producing Prince Andrew than the welfare state. At the very least, we should surely be allowed to ask some questions. Can a modern nation call itself democratic if it retains an unelected head of state? Is a growing reliance on charity a point of celebration or shame? Does sanitising the existence of royalty normalise wider inequality? As a diamond-encrusted crown is placed on the king’s head, your packed local homeless shelter is desperate for help. Don’t you feel proud to be British?

Telangana IAS officer urges SC to intervene in release of Anand Mohan

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Smita Sabharwal has requested the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India to intervene in the release of convicts involved in the killing of IAS officer G. Krishnaiah in Bihar.

Smita, who is secretary to the Telangana chief minister, on Wednesday, expressed solidarity with the family of Krishnaiah.

“Sometimes one wonders if being a civil servant is worth it. Request the SC and CJI to intervene,” tweeted Smita, who is known for expressing her views on burning issues.

    MS Education Academy

She retweeted the statement of the Central IAS Association, which expressed its deep dismay at the decision of the Bihar government to release the convicts involved in the brutal killing of G. Krishnaiah, former District Magistrate of Gopalganj.

A convict charged with murder of a public servant on duty, cannot be reclassified to a less heinous category. Amendment of an existing classification which leads to the release of the convicted killer of a public servant on duty is tantamount to denial of justice, said the IAS Association.

It also stated that such dilution leads to impunity, erosion in morale of public servants, undermines public order and makes a mockery of the administration of justice. The Association requested the Bihar government to reconsider its decision at the earliest.

Krishnaiah’s family, which lives in Hyderabad, has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and stop release of former MP Anand Mohan Singh, who had instigated the bureaucrat’s lynching.

The slain Dalit IAS officer’s wife Uma said that she was shocked by Bihar government’s decision to release former MP Anand Mohan Singh by amending the Bihar prison manual.

Uma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should intervene and make Nitish Kumar withdraw his decision which will set a bad precedent and have serious repercussions for the entire society. “My husband was an IAS officer and it is the Centre’s responsibility to ensure that justice is done,” she said.

She alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is releasing the killer of her husband for votes of Rajputs and to form government again.
