Environment | A considerable part of the palsa swamps of Upper Lapland has disappeared due to climate change

Pals are peat mounds in permafrost with an icy core. When the average temperature rises, the ice inside the mounds melts and the mounds collapse. No new mounds are formed.

Third Compared to the situation in the 1990s, the number of palsas in the conservation and wilderness areas of Upper Lapland has disappeared, says Metsähallitus.

The reason for this is climate change. Pals are peat mounds in permafrost with an icy core. When the average temperature rises, the ice inside the mounds melts and the mounds collapse. New palsa mounds are no longer formed, and thus the palsa swamps disappear.

Metsähallitus and the Finnish Environment Agency mapped almost three million hectares of the natural state of Upper Lapland in 2020–2022. The material produced with the help of machine intelligence is the most accurate that has ever been collected about the area’s habitat types and their condition.

Rajouri Killings: J&K Police Says Militants Hiding In Upper Reaches

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Militants involved in the back-to-back attack in Upper Dangri village in Rajouri district on January 1 and 2 this year, killing seven people and leaving 14 others injured, are still hiding in the upper reaches of the border district, and are getting logistical support from some people, newspaper The Indian Express quoted the Jammu and Kashmir Police as having said.

In an audio clip circulated late Tuesday, police also warned of stern action against those facilitating the militants in any way.

Confirming the audio message, a senior police officer said their cordon and search operations are in progress.

Referring to the attack, police said in the audio, “Yeh hamla karney waley abhi bhi Rajouri ke pahaari ilakey mein chhupey huey hein, aur kisi bhi waqt koi bhi ghinoni wardaat ko anjaam de saktey hain (the killers are still hiding in the hilly areas of Rajouri and can carry out their nefarious activities any time).

“Besides helping these militants move from one place to another, and providing them shelter, some people are (also) helping them by providing information about the movement and actions of police and paramilitary forces,” it said.

Police also appealed for help from the local people in completely eliminating militancy.

In the audio message, police reiterated the Rs 10-lakh award announced earlier for anyone providing information on the militants.

The development comes two days after Saroj Bala, a widow who lost both her two sons in the New Year attack, threatened on Monday to start an indefinite hunger strike unless police managed to trace and nab the militants in 15 days. She had earlier threatened to go on an indefinite fast from Monday, but agreed to change her decision following a meeting convened by village sarpanch Dheeraj Sharma, The Indian Express reported.

UP: Dalit family gets police protection after threats from upper castes

    [ad_1]

Sambhal: A Dalit family was given protection after it sought help from the police for the wedding of their 20-year-old daughter.

The plea came after alleged restrictions were imposed by a group of upper caste men from their village for gifting a Royal Enfield motorcycle to the newlyweds.

The bride’s parents, Rishipal Valmiki and Sheela Devi, claimed that the local village head had asked them ‘not to give away gifts like upper caste families do if they want the wedding to be held smoothly.

They were also warned of “violent reprisals like stone pelting during the wedding procession”.

The bride’s mother, Sheela Devi, said, “We are the only Dalit family in the village and people in the neighbourhood firmly told us that they will not let my daughter get married because we are starting a new tradition in our community by presenting a bike as a gift. Initially, they did not raise any objection but when they saw the new motorcycle and other gifts at our house, they created a ruckus and misbehaved with guests on Monday.”

She further said, “We had to approach the police and a former minister for help. Now, we have received police protection and expect the wedding ceremony to pass off peacefully.”

Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, Chakresh Mishra, said, “Yes, we sent a police team to Ghughaiya and questioned those who threatened the family. They said that they do not have any objection with the wedding ceremony now. But we have kept a team there for the safety of guests and the family till the wedding is over.”

  • Karnataka: Dalit woman thrashed as cow strays on upper caste land

Karnataka: Dalit woman thrashed as cow strays on upper caste land

    [ad_1]

A Dalit woman, whose cow had strayed inside an upper caste person’s land was assaulted, beaten with chappals, and hurled casteist abuses by the latter in Koppal district of Karnataka.

The incident occurred on February 3 in Rampur village. The accused tied the Dalit woman in front of his house and then began hitting her with his chappals.

Family members of the Dalit victim have alleged this is a common practice followed by the accused Amaresh Kumbar for many years.

Based on the Dalit victim’s complaint, Kanakagiri police registered a case against Kumbar under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Dalit atrocities are becoming progressively common in Karnataka. Last year, upper caste members in Heggotara village of Chamarajanagar taluk cleaned a water tank after a Dalit woman drank water from it to quench her thirst.

Dalit young men protested by drinking water from all water tanks in the village thus highlighting the issue of discrimination and untouchability that is heavily prevalent in rural areas.

Also, a message was painted on the tanks, making it clear that they are meant for public use and anyone can drink water from them.

Similarly, in December, a Dalit woman was seen being mercilessly kicked and dragged by a priest out of a temple after she dared to enter it. A video of the assault soon went viral. The incident took place in Bengaluru.

The video shows the woman being repeatedly slapped, and dragged by the hair outside. The accused can be seen beating her with sticks even as she runs for cover.

Take hard line against upper castes: Bihar Minister in puported video

    [ad_1]

Patna: In a purported video of a phone conversation, Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekher Yadav, who recently made controversial remarks on Ramcharitmanas, was heard telling his supporters to take a hard line against the “upper castes”.

A purported video of RJD national vice president Uday Narayan Chaudhary speaking to Yadav over phone went viral on social media, where Yadav was heard telling his supporters to target “upper castes but not the entire Hindu community”.

The video was reportedly captured when Chaudhary was in Simultala block of Bihar’s Jamui Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday. The farmers of Simultala have donated their land for construction of a school, and they urged Chaudhary to invite the state Education Minister there. After which, Chaudhary called Yadav over phone with his mobile speaker on, and the video of entire conversation was recorded by someone.

Yadav, during the conversation, was heard citing an example of “Mata Sabri” and “Nishadh Raj”. He also said that pick Ramcharitmanas or any other holy book and highlight points where people of upper caste were dominating. Yadav suggested his supporters to “avoid saying anything against Ram as it would turn outrageous, and Hindu people may get angry on it.”

The minister had earlier claimed that Ramcharitmanas, Manusmriti, and Bunch of Thoughts “spread hatred in society”.

His remarks stoked a huge nationwide controversy.
