Hyderabad: Middle finger shown to protesting students at right-wing event in UoH

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Mild tension prevailed in the University of Hyderabad (UOH) when a programme was allowed to be held by right-wing think tank Pragna Bharati in the campus. After got students got to know of it, many of them were prevented from entering the event. The situation got more tense after a man, alleged to be an RSS member, showed protesting students a middle-finger while walking in.

At the event in UoH, known speakers such as right-wing ideologue Rajiv Malhotra and BJP Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy attended the event. Malhotra is most infamous on social media for featuring in a video with rape-accused Swami Ntiyananda, and discussing about a bizarre idea of how to get money from the billionaires in world to deliver it to them in the next life.

During the program organised by Pragna Bharati on Monday, several students were prevented from entering the talk. Students claims that only people who are affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were let in. Many who were unhappy with the presence of the right-wing speakers in UoH turned up to protest at the event.

Over the last few years the University of Hyderabad administration has also prevented various speakers from entering the campus to speak with the students (like Yogendra Yadav).

Pragna Bharati organised an interactive session with Rajiv Malhotra, Subramanian Swamy and Vijaya Viswanathan on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Zakir Hussain lecture hall.

Among vidoes shot during the protest in UoH, one of those shows a man in kurta who was being escorted into the lecture hall. In that video, he responded to the sloganeering students by whistling at them and pointing his middle finger towards them.

“We were stopped from attending the session under the pretext that we did not register for the program. We only came because we wanted to listen to the speakers and interact with them,” said Kripa, the general secretary of the student union while speaking to Siasat.com.

She said a complaint against the man was given to the Gachibowli police and the University of Hyderabad administration also. In another video the police and UoH security were seen pulling the students away and preventing them from entering the hall.

The program organisers from Pragna Bharati said that they did not invite him to the sessions and that they had no clue about the incident until the police had informed them later. Speaking to Siasat.com, One of the organisers from Pragya Bharati, who identified himself as Sharmaji, called the students “anti-nationals”.

Various university students shared the video of the incident on social media, accusing RSS and ABVP of bringing the man (who showed the middle finger) into the university.

Hyderabad: UoH asks students, staff to not feed stray dogs

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Monday asked its students and staff members not to feed stray dogs in university facilities such as dormitories, messes, hallways, and residences.

According to a circular sent by the university administration, numerous students and employees have recently complained about stray dogs on campus. Students complained that some students/staff were feeding stray dogs, which exacerbated the situation.

The matter was of grave concern since a four-year-old kid was recently mauled and killed by a group of dogs in Amberpet, the city, it said.

The university advised its stakeholders to avoid a pack of dogs, if any, while travelling alone or in poorly lit places on campus, and said it was cooperating with the GHMC on the problem.

“Students/staff are requested to avoid feeding the stray dogs in the hostels/messes, corridors, residences, etc., and help the administration in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all stakeholders on the campus,” it added.

Hyderabad: Students injured in clash between ABVP, SFI in UoH

    [ad_1]

Telangana: A clash broke out between the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members at Hyderabad Central University on Friday, sources said.

Some students were also injured in the clash incident which broke out during students’ union election held on Friday night, said sources.

ABVP members alleged that SFI did violence against the tribal students of ABVP and used sharp objects like knives to attack them.

According to the ABVP members, tribal students and their members were beaten up by the SFI activists for not supporting their party.

Taking to Twitter ABVP tweeted, “SFI has unleashed violence against the tribal students and karyakartas”>karyakartas of ABVP HCU. They used sharp objects like knives. We condemn this attack against our karyakartas”>karyakartas. @ABVPVoice @ABVPTelangana.”

SFI members alleged that ABVP knew that they were going to get defeated in the student union election and that’s the reason they attacked and provoked the student community.

“Condemn the brutal attack by ABVP goons on SFI comrades today, on the night of the union election polling day, SFI comrades were brutally attacked by ABVP goons inside the Men’s hostel F. The incident started with ABVP members in a drunken state abusing and targeting our comrades,” SFI said in a tweet.

The drunken ABVP goon attacked comrades and broke the glass doors. Our comrades were assaulted with sharp glass pieces and cycles lying in front of the hostel, SFI tweeted.

The SFI members who got attacked were shifted to the hospital, SFI said.

SFI members further urged the student community to stand united against this hooliganism and said, “ABVP, fearing a defeat in the election is trying to attack and provoke the student community. ABVP has been resorting to violence since UGBM fearing an utter defeat in the SU 2023 polls.”

Hyderabad: UoH contributes to research on Fatty Liver Disease

    [ad_1]

A recent research study at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) provides another dimension to reduce fat accumulation in the liver. This reduces the onset of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and opens up new avenues for therapeutic intervention.

The liver plays a central role in lipid metabolism. Fatty liver Disease (FLD) in particular the Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a serious health concern that affects 25% of the world’s population.

It is characterised by increased abdominal fat accumulation and metabolic abnormalities including insulin resistance, type-2-diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular problems. NAFLD can progress to hepatocellular carcinoma and liver failure.

This study shows that Lipid associated mitochondria promotes fatty acid oxidation through distinct bioenergetics pattern in the liver.

The study was conducted by professor Naresh Babu Sepuri, Department of Biochemistry, School of Life Sciences at UoH and his team. The main contributors for the study are Dr Noble Kumar Talari and Dr Ushodaya Mattam, Niroj Kumar, Arun Kumar P.

It demonstrates the significance of functional segregation of mitochondria as any aberration in lipid droplet-associated mitochondria may lead to NAFLD.

The study has been published as an article in Nature Communications, a peer reviewed journal.

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Muslim Students Federation (MSF), a student organisation at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) has alleged that the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) employed Islamophobic slogans against them at the University’s general body meeting on Wednesday.

Speaking to Siasat.com, Mohammed Muhsin said that after protests from the ABVP, the yearly held University General Body Meet (UGBM) which sheds light on the work done by the UoH Students Union, was cancelled. As all students present were leaving the Amphitheatre on campus, MSF claims to have been attacked by cadres of the ABVP.

“There were around 100 of us and around 300 ABVP members. They started shouting slogans like Goli maaron saalon ko (Shoot the traitors) and also asked us to ‘Go to Pakistan’,” said Muhsin, the president of MSF and a PhD Management studies student at the university.

MSF is the student organisation of the Indian Union Muslim League party.

The MSF also issued a statement titled “Stand against ABVP hooliganism in HCU” in which they stated that despite the hate, the campus security did nothing to deescalate the situation.

Despite repeated attempts, Siasat.com received no response from the ABVP.
