Maha: 6L hectare land affected by unseasonal rains; farmers to get compensation

Nagpur: Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Abdul Sattar on Thursday said farmers will not face shortage of seeds or fertilisers and will get adequate compensation for crop loss due to unseasonal rains after ‘panchnamas’ (assessment) were completed.
He was addressing a press conference after chairing a review meeting of Kharif season preparation in Nagpur division.
“Farmers in the state will not face any shortage of seeds and fertilizers as these have been allocated as per district-wise demand. Compensation to the farmers affected by the recent rains will be given as soon as loss assessment surveys are completed,” a District Information Office release quoted him as saying.

“A total of 46 lakh hectares of land was affected by excessive and unseasonal rainfall between June last year and now. A total of 57 lakh farmers were affected. The state government will provide double the relief set as per National Disaster Relief Fund criteria,” he said.
Farmers in the state will get Rs 12,000 annually since the state government will pay Rs 6,000 over and above the Rs 6,000 paid by the Union government under the PM Kissan Samman Nidhi Yojana, Sattar said.

After unseasonal rains, Hyderabad gears up for summer heat as mercury set to rise

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is gearing up for the summer heat after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad issued a yellow alert as the maximum temperature in the city is likely to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius this week.
In some districts of Telangana, the maximum temperature is expected to reach up to 45 degrees Celsius. These districts include Adilabad, Jagitial, Komaram Bheem, Mancherial, Nirmal, and Rajanna Siricilla.
Recent rains in Hyderabad
Recently, Hyderabad received heavy rains, which brought much-needed relief to the residents who were witnessing scorching summer heat.
All six zones in Hyderabad, namely Charminar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad, and Serilingampally, received rains towards the evening or night.
Now, the IMD issued a yellow alert till March 31 as the temperature in Hyderabad may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) also forecasted that the maximum temperatures in the state are expected to be in the range of 36 to 40 degrees Celsius. In Hyderabad, maximum temperatures are expected to be in the range of 34 degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is likely to be in the range of 22 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius.
Sehri tips to stay hydrated during summer season in Hyderabad
In view of the forecast made by both IMD Hyderabad and TSDPS, residents are advised to take necessary precautions and plan accordingly.
With the summer heat on the rise during the Ramzan, it is essential to drink enough water during sehri. As per various studies, a minimum of 60 ounces or nearly 2 liters of water can help a person keep hydrated for an entire day during the fast.
Eating yogurt at the end of sehri meal is scientifically correct and beneficial as it helps to soothe the stomach and prevent acidity, eventually preventing from getting dehydration.

In order to be hydrated, keep spice, salt, and sugar low in meals and add water-rich foods like cucumber, tomato salad, and juicy fruits like watermelon, oranges, kiwi, and more in sehri meal.
Apart from it, wearing loose, light-colored cotton clothing can also help in coping with the heat.

Telangana: KCR to tour, examine crop damage due to unseasonal rains

Hyderabad: Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao will evaluate agricultural damage caused by the recent unseasonal rains, and hailstorms in several districts of the state.
“In the context of crop damage due to recent unseasonal rains, chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao will tour the districts of Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal and Karimnagar, will interact with farmers and provide confidence to them,” read a press release from the CMO.

Unseasonal rains and hailstorm in parts of Telangana have damaged standing crops in more than 1.50 lakh acres, according to initial estimates by the state government.
The unexpected rains and hail storms due to the trough over the state caused huge losses to farmers, who were hoping to reap the Rabi harvest in a few days.
Maize, mango, cotton, and chilli crops have been damaged due to the untimely rains and hailstorm.
Based on the preliminary estimates from District Collectors, Telangana State Rythu Bandhu Samithi president and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislator Palla Rajeshwar Reddy stated that crops over 1.50 lakh acres belonging to 80,000 farmers were damaged.
The actual losses could be much higher. The state government is waiting for reports from agriculture clusters. There are 2,603 agriculture clusters in the state.
Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has asked the district ministers concerned, the Chief Secretary and the officials to get the details of the damages caused by hailstorm.

The Chief Minister is also likely to visit badly-affected districts on Wednesday. He is likely to announce relief measures after the visit.
The state government has demanded that the Centre should send its teams to assess the damage caused to the crops due to the unseasonal rains.
However, the BRS government does not have huge expectations. Rajeshwar Reddy alleged that during the monsoon, when there was a crop loss of Rs 7,000 crore, the Centre had given just Rs 250 crore.
The opposition parties and farmers’ groups have demanded the state government to come to the rescue of affected farmers.
As the state government is not implementing any crop insurance scheme, the farmers are looking towards the state government to compensate for the loss they incurred.
Some farmers’ organizations are demanding the state government to either implement the Centre’s Pradahan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) or launch its own scheme.
BJP state President Bandi Sanjay claimed that there was a crop loss in more than five lakh acres of crops in about 13 districts.
He said chilli and mango farmers were the worst affected due to rains and hailstorms and added that about 40,000 acres of mango crop has been damaged due to rains.
He alleged that since the Telangana government was not implementing crop insurance schemes of the Centre, farmers were not getting crop insurance for the damages caused due to rains.
In an open letter to the Chief Minister, Bandi Sanjay said that if the state government implemented the PMFBY, farmers would have immediately received the compensation.
However, the BRS government says that the PMFBY is useful only for the insurance companies and not for farmers. It wants the Centre to bring a new crop insurance scheme.
CPI-M state Secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram demanded that a compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre should be paid to each acre to all those farmers who lost their standing crops.

Hyderabad: Mangoes which are considered the king of fruits are likely to turn expensive this season for mango lovers in Hyderabad. The reason behind this is the unseasonal rains and pest attacks that have affected many mango crops in different districts of the state, resulting in a double blow to their yield.
The unseasonal rains and hailstorms have not only affected the mango crop, but other crops too including maize, papaya, onion, cotton, tomato, and chili. This has caused damage to the yield, and many farmers are now worried about the impact it will have on their livelihood.
Rainfall in Telangana increases mango farmers’ woes
Though, the season started on a positive note as the day temperature increased steadily since January, the pest attacks followed by the rains and hailstorms have taken a toll on the crops. The flower-to-fruit conversion was also affected due to pest attacks, resulting in a lower yield.
Last week’s severe rains and hailstorms have only added to the woes of the farmers. This has left many farmers wondering how they will be able to survive this season.
The loss of crops due to unseasonal rains and pest attacks may also affect the export market, leading to a decrease in supply and an increase in prices. Out of the total production of mangoes in the neighboring districts of Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana, a significant portion is exported to foreign countries like Gulf countries, China, Australia, and others.
Hyderabad markets get mangoes from other states
Usually, raw mangoes are brought from different parts of Telangana in Hyderabad markets, but in the current year, raw mangoes have been brought to Hyderabad from neighbouring states too resulting in an increase in prices.
The mangoes are being brought to Hyderabad from Bengaluru and other places in the neighboring state of Karnataka.

Stalin announces relief to farmers affected by unseasonal rains

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday announced relief of Rs 20,000 per hectare for the farmers of the delta region who have lost crops due to unseasonal rains.
Stalin made the announcement after getting feedback from the ministers and other bureaucrats who visited the rain-affected districts of Myladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam.
The relief package, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s office, includes Rs 20,000 per hectare of harvest-ready paddy to farmers who have lost 33 per cent of their crops in heavy rains. This is on the basis of the disaster management rules of the government.
The Chief Minister also issued orders to distribute 8 kg of crop seeds per acre at a 50 per cent subsidy to urad dal farmers who have lost their crops during the unusual rains in delta districts of the state and to undertake urad dal cultivation again.
The package announced by Stalin includes provision of paddy harvesting machines on rent at a 50 per cent subsidy to paddy farmers through the State Agriculture Engineering Department. The Chief Minister also directed officials to undertake additional crop harvest checks in villages.
