Mujpathri Gram Sabha Declares 1000 Sq Km Forest Land As Community Forest, Including

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On April 28th, Panchayat Halqa Mujpathri-Khansaheb made history by organizing the first Gram Sabha on Community Forest Rights under the Forest Rights Act 2006. This event was a significant step towards community-led conservation and sustainable tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was facilitated by J&K Forest Rights Coalition (FRC), and a large turnout of residents participated in the historical gathering. During the Gram Sabha, a detailed resolution was read and passed by the Forest Rights Committee, Panchayat, and Gram Sabha members with unanimous approval. The resolution declared 1000 square kilometers of forest land as Community Forest, stretching from Sochal-pathri to Nurpurgali, Khaal-Katt to Burgah, Zeskhal to Eid (lidermatt).

The resolution also mandated the panchayat to ensure conservation of forests and mountains, as well as the sustainable use of minor forest produce and forest foods. This move by Mujh Pathri to declare such a large area as a community forest is commendable, and it is hoped that this will serve as an inspiration for other communities and governments to follow suit in promoting community-led forest management and conservation.

Notably, Mujh Pathri panchayat is the first panchayat to lead community conservation, community-based tourism, and afforestation under the leadership of J&K-FRC and its activists. The Gram Sabha also resolved that the first beneficiaries of Doodhpathri tourism would be residents of Rayiar, Mujh Pathri, Gurweit, and BassantWoeder.

The resolution stressed the importance of maintaining the carrying capacity of Doodhpathri during tourism and opposed mass and irresponsible tourism. It also prohibited the use of packed food, polythene, liquor, and narcotic drugs. Furthermore, the Panchayat pledged to monitor anti-environmental development in eco-sensitive areas. The resolution was supported by the Panchayats of Gurwaith, Rayiar, Beeru, RayiarKeich, Check Shaira, and Drager, respectively.

The founder of the J&K Forest Rights Coalition, Dr. Shaikh Ghulam Rasool, Secretary Peer Ghulam Mohiuddin, and Convener Zahid Parwaz Choudhary coordinated the Gram Sabha procedures under the Forest Rights Act 2006. This historical event marks a significant step towards community-led conservation and sustainable tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Community forests are forest lands managed and governed by the local communities who use them for their livelihoods, traditional practices, and cultural activities. This approach not only empowers the communities but also helps in conserving the forest ecosystem, reducing deforestation, and promoting biodiversity. The recognition of community forests as a legitimate land-use category is an important development in the realm of forest governance and management.

The declaration of 1000 sq. km of forest land as a community forest during the First Historical Gram Sabha at Mujh Pathri marks a significant step towards sustainable and community-led forest management. It is hoped that this will serve as a model for other regions and communities in promoting community-led forest management and conservation.

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Omar Abdullah, Vice President, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Monday termed the upcoming G-20 summit a ‘tamasha’ and said that the preparations for the same are causing inconvenience to the people of Kashmir.

Omar was reacting to his father and NC president, Dr Farooq Abdullah’s comments on Jammu not being a part of upcoming G-20 event.

Lashing out at BJP, Omar tweeted, “Things are a mess in Srinagar because of this G-20 tamasha. The actual meeting will probably see most areas locked down and people stuck in their homes. Pertinent to mention, Kashmir is set to host G20 event and the visiting delegates will be in Kashmir on a three day visit and will also opt for sightseeing. The administration in Srinagar is busy in execution of Smart City Projects in the city as delegates from guest countries and many international organisations are expected to participate in the event.

  • JK Records Highest SGST Growth Rate In The Country At 44.5%: Govt

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: On Monday, an official press release stated that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir experienced an exceptional surge in GST collections during April 2023. The total collections for the month reached Rs 917.85 crores, which is a remarkable increase of Rs 215.77 crores from the April collections of the previous year. This represents a growth rate of 30.73 percent.

As per Ministry of Finance data released today, the SGST growth rate in the aforementioned region has been among the highest in the country, showing a significant increase of 44.51 percent compared to the same period last year. Additionally, there has been a growth of 22 percent in IGST settlement in comparison to the previous financial year.

Moreover, the State Taxes Department reported that the GST collections for April 2023 are the highest-ever recorded since the implementation of GST. This is noteworthy because the previous best-ever collections for a month in terms of SGST cash and IGST monthly average in the last financial year were over Rs 600 crores, according to the release.

The monthly GST collections in the financial year 2021-2022 were Rs 496.95 crores. Recently, the SGST cash collections have been steadily increasing and have gained national attention due to the record growth in Jammu and Kashmir in April 2023, which has surpassed all previous records since the inception of GST.

The State Taxes Department has successfully expanded the tax base from 1.17 Lakh in 2021-22 to 1.34 Lakh in the financial year 2022-23. Additionally, the department granted around 25982 new registrations during the same period.

This increase in revenue collections can be attributed to the department’s efforts in improving compliance behaviour by taxpayers and providing proactive support for GST compliance. The department has also used various IT tools like BIFA, GST Prime, and GST BO portal, along with human intelligence to identify and take action against defaulters. As a result, 8800 cancellations were made in the financial year 2022-23.

Furthermore, honest taxpayers have been recognized and rewarded through the department’s tax awareness program “KARTAVYA,” which was recently launched by the Lieutenant Governor of UT of Jammu and Kashmir, according to the press release.
