Failed secretary of state candidate Jim Marchant joins Nevada Senate race

    election 2024 nevada senate 90176

Former Nevada Republican state lawmaker Jim Marchant announced Tuesday he is entering the race for U.S. Senate, looking to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in 2024.

Marchant, who has led a group of Donald Trump supporters who claim the 2020 election was stolen from the former president, was endorsed by Trump in his failed secretary of state bid in Nevada last year. He also lost his bid for a House seat in 2020 to Democrat Steven Horsford and sued unsuccessfully to overturn that result.

He is the founder of the America First Secretary of State Coalition, a group that advocates for more restrictive ballot access laws in their states. Marchant himself has been a proponent of counting ballots by hand, a process that some election officials have said is less accurate and more costly than a machine count.

“It’s hard to believe that in the post-#MeToo, anti-bullying world we live in, that the president’s team would be this tone-deaf,” said Michael LaRosa, the former press secretary for first lady Jill Biden.

“If true, it represents a stunning lack of judgment by those whom he entrusted to responsibly staff his reelection campaign. It’s not like there is a lack of Democratic talent in D.C. or across the country to choose from,” he said. “Hiring former personnel who embarrassed and humiliated him in his first three weeks in office and created an unnecessary distraction in the briefing room and for the first family feels counterintuitive to me.”

With the campaign still taking shape, official roles are highly coveted among Democratic operatives and veterans of Joe Bidens 2020 campaign. Only two full-time hires have been announced. And one of them, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the incoming campaign manager, doesn’t even leave her White House position for another two weeks.

Against that backdrop, Ducklo’s anticipated return has sparked debate and controversy among former Biden administration and campaign staffers — some of them vying for campaign jobs themselves — about what type of behavior is forgivable in a public role. It has also led to an outpouring of support from his former colleagues, underscoring the enduring bond among the original staffers who helped launch Biden’s 2020 campaign and their deep conviction about giving Ducklo a second chance.

“From the very start, TJ earned confidence and trust at every level of the campaign — because of his abilities and because he went the extra mile for his colleagues,” said Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn, speaking with West Wing Playbook in what she stressed was her personal capacity. “TJ made a mistake, took responsibility for it, and paid a price. He continues to be a valued friend in our community and an incredibly talented professional.”

More than a dozen of Ducklo’s former colleagues from the 2020 campaign and the White House reached out Tuesday to West Wing Playbook, arguing that he has made amends for his actions and deserves another stint in Biden world. The news coverage of his behavior was humiliating, they said. After enduring treatment for stage 4 lung cancer throughout the campaign, Ducklo was forced to step down from a dream job after Vanity Fair reported on his verbal altercation with a then-POLITICO reporter who planned to publish a story on his relationship at the time with an Axios reporter.

In the end, Ducklo took responsibility and apologized — a move that earned him goodwill among senior Biden officials.

“TJ is strategic, whip smart and loyal through and through — any campaign would be lucky to have him,” said Kate Bedingfield, who was deputy campaign manager in 2020 and left her position earlier this year as White House communications director. “I’ve known TJ well for a long time and I can say without hesitation that he learned from his past mistake, which is all any of us can do. He has experience and grit, and he’d be an exceptional asset to the president’s reelection team.”

As former deputy communications director for strategic planning Meghan Hays put it, in a refrain echoed by multiple former colleagues: “No one deserves to be defined by their worst day.”

Ducklo, whose possible reentrance into Biden world was first reported by Bloomberg, declined to speak to West Wing Playbook for this report. But for a White House often reluctant to go on the record, there was no such hesitation to defend him by name. Other staffers who worked with him on the campaign and in the Biden administration, including Kamau Marshall, Carla Frank, Andrew Bates, Megan Apper, Kate Berner and Robyn Patterson, offered similar messages of support in a personal capacity, as did others who asked to speak on background.

Ducklo’s resignation came less than a month after Biden, on his first day in office, told a group of presidential appointees he’d fire anyone who treated others with disrespect. Many who worked closely with Ducklo during the 2020 campaign described him as kind and empowering, a generous mentor to junior colleagues.

But other Democratic staffers said he could be difficult to work with and combative with some reporters. They pointed out that Ducklo has found a relatively soft landing already.

After leaving the White House, he worked for Risa Heller’s communication firm before moving back to his hometown of Nashville, Tenn., to be a senior adviser to Mayor John Cooper. He has stayed close to the Biden White House and helped organize Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Nashville last month after two legislators were expelled from the state House for protesting gun violence.

Among those eager to bring Ducklo back, his work in Nashville represents another reason why. He has sharpened his skills, some noted, especially when it comes to higher level strategic communications work, and helped organize a politically sensitive visit that, by all accounts, went off swimmingly.

But some former staffers from the Biden campaign and the White House said that such tactical benefits don’t change the fact that hiring Ducklo on the reelection campaign would be an unforced error — one that would inevitably distract from the president’s message during his campaign and invite otherwise avoidable scrutiny.

“I am all about forgiveness but there were also several loyal Biden campaign staffers fired by the White House for marijuana use. Do they get their White House or campaign jobs back, too?” LaRosa said. “Smoking pot is a lot less offensive than the type of workplace behavior we’re talking about here.”

But Trump’s lawyer Joe Tacopina had demurred when asked several times by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan whether Trump would testify, leaving the option open.

On Tuesday, however, Tacopina informed Kaplan that Trump had decided against taking the witness stand.

The jury, however, will hear from Trump, albeit not live or in person. An attorney for Carroll said she expects to play about 45 minutes of a videotaped deposition of Trump for jurors.

Jurors heard from a variety of witness on Tuesday, including a friend of Carroll’s, Lisa Birnbach, who testified that Carroll called her about five minutes after the alleged incident at Bergdorf’s and, “breathless” and “hyperventilating,” told Birnbach that Trump had attacked her. Jurors also heard from a woman named Jessica Leeds, who has accused Trump of sexually assaulting her on an airplane in the late 1970s.

Feinstein ‘hopeful’ she can return to Senate next week, Schumer notes say

    [ad_1]

“It was in his notes, and he would have said if someone asked,” Schumer’s spokesperson told POLITICO.

Earlier on Tuesday Feinstein’s office told POLITICO that Feinstein “continues to make progress in her recovery” from shingles, but that her staff “don’t have a timeline yet for her return to Washington, which is dependent on her medical team saying it is safe to travel.”

A Feinstein spokesperson confirmed the senator and Schumer spoke, originally confirming the majority leader’s notes that the conversation occurred Monday and later saying that it happened Sunday night.

Senate Republicans blocked an attempt by Democrats last month to temporarily replace Feinstein on the Judiciary panel.

House Democrats, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) have called on Feinstein to resign before the end of her term to allow a replacement to be appointed.

The race to replace Feinstein is already crowded, with House Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee battling for the seat in deep-blue California. Complicating their races is Newsom’s 2021 commitment to appoint a Black woman for the Senate, should Feinstein resign.

‘No solution in the Senate’: Both parties dig in on debt

    [ad_1]

And that GOP agreement is highly unlikely to materialize any time soon. Jeffries’ plan landed with a thud among Republicans who want to see Biden give ground first, despite the Treasury Department’s warning that the nation could exhaust its ability to pay bills as early as June 1.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed that he will attend next week’s White House meeting while stressing that a deal must be struck by Biden and McCarthy: “There is no solution in the Senate.”

Biden must “make a counteroffer” during next week’s scheduled meeting with both parties’ top Hill leaders, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) agreed on Tuesday. “And a counteroffer cannot be a clean debt ceiling.”

No matter what compromise Biden can stomach, Tillis added, “there’s no question that” it would lose votes from House Republicans who supported McCarthy’s conservative opening bid last week. That bill would lift the nation’s borrowing cap by $1.5 trillion or through March 2024, whichever comes first, while slashing $130 billion in government funding and tightening work requirements for federal benefits.

Tillis described a Senate vote on a clean debt ceiling hike through the 2024 election, which Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is considering, as a “gimmick” and a “waste of chamber time” given the certainty of a GOP filibuster.

Senate Democrats will decide whether to put a clean debt ceiling increase up for a vote after the White House meeting on May 9, Schumer told reporters Tuesday.

If the Senate passes a clean debt limit increase, Congress could use the House GOP’s fiscal bill as a potential vehicle for a bipartisan government funding deal, Schumer said Tuesday. Yet the chances of that happening appear slim at the moment, with Republicans demanding massive federal funding cuts in exchange for raising the borrowing limit and GOP leaders refusing to decouple spending from debt.

Jeffries announced to House Democrats in a Tuesday letter that their party’s top member on the Rules Committee, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), had taken the first steps toward a discharge petition on a debt limit increase with no added conditions designed to win over Republicans.

“The filing of a debt ceiling measure to be brought up on the discharge calendar preserves an important option,” Jeffries wrote in a letter first reported by the New York Times. “It is now time for MAGA Republicans to act in a bipartisan manner to pay America’s bills without extreme conditions.”

His announcement came one day after the Treasury told lawmakers that the government could run out of cash by the beginning of June. Any discharge petition would require at least five Republicans to sign on in order to bring a bill to the House floor if it has sat in committee for more than 30 days.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) has vowed not to pass any debt ceiling bill without concessions in exchange, and his Republicans cleared a package last week that offers a slew of them — all enacting conservative priorities, on topics from energy to Biden’s student loan relief plan.

“Nobody wants to see the United States government have to change the name of the Department of Treasury to the Department of Debt because there’s no longer any treasury there,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said. “So, the time has come for the president to sit down with the House and be a leader.”

On Tuesday afternoon, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the Biden administration “won’t negotiate in public” about the potential for a short-term increase in the debt limit or any other options for averting a default.

“And our position is going to be very clear: that Congress needs to avoid a default — and I’ll leave it there — without conditions,” she told reporters.

Jean-Pierre also dismissed the suggestion that Biden’s inclusion of Schumer and McConnell in next week’s meeting is a sign that the president wants the Senate to take a leading role in the talks.

Meanwhile, with just over four weeks until the U.S. could risk defaulting on $31.4 trillion in debt, a temporary increase in the borrowing limit might be needed to head off economic tumult while leaders in Congress work with Biden on a longer-term solution.

Schumer on Tuesday swatted down that idea, however.

“We should not kick the can down the road. We should go for the full two-year extension,” he said.

Anthony Adragna and Jennifer Scholtes contributed to this report.

  • FCIK Demands Govt Intervention To Stop JK Bank’s ‘Smear Campaign’

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Federation of Chambers of Industries Kashmir (FCIK) has called for immediate intervention by the UT government in resolving issues between J&K Bank and MSMEs, in order to put a stop to the maligning campaign launched by the former against non-performing assets (NPAs) without giving them a reasonable opportunity of being heard.

The demand was made in a marathon meeting between the FCIK Advisory Committee and Presidents of organized industrial estates, held at FCIK headquarters under the chairmanship of M.D. Qureshi, which was attended by Presidents of industrial estates including Lassipora, Khunmoh, Rangreth, Zainakote, Sanat Nagar, BAMK, Zakura, Anchidora Anantnag, Vessu, Ganderbal, Gagran Shopian, Shalteng, Sopore, Baramullah, Kupwara, besides other members of the Advisory Committee.

The Presidents of various industrial estates presented a detailed account of continued financial stress currently prevalent in MSMEs owing to a number of reasons which, among other difficulties, has also led to growing NPAs. They said that the unilateral withdrawal of marketing support to MSMEs committed under the industrial policy of 2016-26, coupled with long spells of business interruptions during re-organisation and Covid restrictions, had been the main reason for this financial stress. Further withholding or delaying of payments on account of supply of material and execution of works to government departments and PSUs had contributed to the stressfulness of hundreds of enterprises.

The meeting regretted that, contrary to acknowledgment of such difficulties, the bank has launched an unwarranted and undesired campaign of maligning and tarnishing the public image of entrepreneurs, adding that such tactics were detrimental not only to the cause of industrial growth and promotion but also to the cordial relations of J&K Bank with local MSMEs.

The meeting underscored the role of the UT government as mediator between J&K Bank and MSMEs in order to identify an acceptable solution to the issue for the benefit of both parties. The members made it clear that all MSMEs were willing to repay their loans to the bank on the launch of a uniform, non-discriminatory restructuring and OTS schemes with a reasonable timeline. The members reminded that the harsh provisions of SARFAESI Act in the UT required some dilution and relief for the reason that the enterprises here were working under most unconducive and disturbed conditions, unlike their counterparts in the rest of the country. The meeting expected the UT government to step in for the sake of reposing faith and confidence of entrepreneurs on their promoters and use its influence as majority shareholders to shape the desired restructuring/OTS schemes. The government also needed to link these schemes with the rehabilitation of sick industrial units under an existent revival and rehabilitation scheme.

Earlier, the President of Industrial Growth Centre Lassipora, Haji Muzaffar, presented a detailed account of the recent visit of MD and other top officials of J&K Bank and informed about their willingness to facilitate NPAs with a suitable OTS scheme besides enhancing access to credit for prospective and existing industrial units. Muzaffar said that during the extensive visit to various industrial units, the MD and his team had a complete idea and expressed satisfaction on the working of manufacturing units from grassroots.

The Advisory Committee, while endorsing the views and suggestions of its constituents, assured the meeting to put in their efforts for holding separate and joint meetings with bank authorities and government to find a lasting solution to all bank issues. The constituents vowed their full support to FCIK Advisory Committee in all its steps and programs which they deem necessary in the process of obtaining relief to the industrial units in distress.
