Telangana: Workers union demands compensation, justice for Swiggy rider’s kin

Hyderabad: Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) have demanded justice for the Swiggy delivery boy who lost his life in a tragic road accident on May 5.

Raju, 31, a resident of the Gandhi colony met with a fatal road accident while delivering food in Alwal of Hyderabad following which he was rushed to the nearby hospital. However, he soon succumbed to his injuries.

Being the only earning member of his family, Raju was survived by an old and ailing mother, a wife, and two small children.

Additionally, Raju was also paying for his wife, Soni Rasapuram’s education who is studying first year of B.Ed.

Soon after the accident, the family tried to contact the management at Swiggy. However, they ended up receiving a computer-generated response with none from the company reaching out to the family so far.

TGPWU’s founder and president, Shaik Salauddin who visited the bereaved family on Monday said, “Raju’s death stands completely ignored by the company. The family was left distressed.”

The union has promised the family to step in and negotiate with Swiggy while they demand Rs 25 lakh as compensation in case of death under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, 1923 (which is to compensate workers who have encountered injuries due to an accident during their employment).

TGPWU has further demanded that police should file an FIR against the person who had hit Raju in the accident and also facilitate compensation from the accused to Raju’s family.

    Accident on May 5

The incident reportedly occurred at night when a speeding car from Kanaji Guda hit a person, and then continued to run until a high-tension pole made it stop.

The incident caused injuries to three people, including Raju who was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

Police identified the driver as a software employee who accelerated her car by mistake, while she was supposed to hit the brake to avoid hitting a man who came in front of the car, ending up in a major accident.

NYT running smear campaign against India: Union minister Anurag Thakur

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur slammed The New York Times (NYT) chairman A G Sulzberger on Thursday for his claims that journalists are treated as terrorists in India.

Speaking at a UNESCO event on World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, Sulzberger said in India, authorities have raided newsrooms and treated journalists essentially as terrorists.

Thakur asserted that the law took its own course in India in case of any wrongdoing and no one can claim immunity citing the status of being a media organisation.

    MS Education Academy

“In India law takes its own course if someone does something wrong, newsroom or no newsroom. Mere claiming the status of a newsroom does not grant immunity from unlawful deeds,” he wrote on Twitter.

Thakur wondered how any investigation amounts to an attack on the press.

“Is it prudent to be a loose mouth and say journalists in India are treated as terrorists?” the minister asked.

He accused the NYT of running a “smear campaign” against India and using the UNESCO podium to “distort facts”.

“Unable to digest the global rise of India and its turning into an economic powerhouse, certain old world media houses have been running a systematic smear campaign against India,” Thakur tweeted.

“NYT, which has carved a niche for itself for writing fact-free and fabricated anti-India stories, shamelessly misused the podium of UNESCO to distort facts,” he added.

The minister said it has been difficult for him to differentiate whether the newspaper is “The New York Times or New Distort Times”.

Auto union withholds support for Biden, citing electric vehicles

He said he and other leaders recently met with Biden administration officials to push their case.

“We were very adamant that if the government is going to funnel billions in taxpayer money to these companies, the workers must be compensated with top wages and benefits,” he said. “A ‘just transition’ has to include standards for our members and future workers.”

The Biden campaign did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

UAW endorsed Biden in the 2020 race, citing his historic support for labor. The union has more than 400,000 active members in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, according to its website.

The union’s threat exposes a rift between two key Democratic constituencies.

Biden, who considers himself a “car guy,” has made electrifying cars a major piece of his climate change agenda. He’s set a goal of 50 percent of new car sales being electric by 2030, and EPA proposed a regulation last month that could even exceed that goal.

But while organized labor has generally endorsed electrification, unions have been uneasy about what the transition could mean for workers. With simpler drivetrains and the need for plants to retool, the EV push has already led to big job changes.

“Right now, we’re focused on making sure the EV transition does right by our members, our families and our communities,” Fain wrote. “We’ll be ready to talk politics once we secure a future for this industry and the workers who make it run.”

But Fain ruled out backing former President Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president, saying another Trump term “would be a disaster.”

“We need to get our members organized behind a pro-worker, pro-climate, and pro-democracy political program that can deliver for the working class.”

Telangana: HC gives go-ahead to RTC employee union elections

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Monday gave orders to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) management to conduct elections to the employees’ union.

The TSRTC employees on April 10 approached the HC in regards to the union elections that had not been conducted since 2018.

The employees union also demanded a revision of the pay scale of the employees and bring it on par with the salaries of the State government employees.

“After sending numerous letters to the government, labour commission, and RTC management and not receiving any response from them, we had to approach the court in this matter,” stated a press release by the employee union leaders S Babu and K Rajireddy.

“We informed the court that there had been elections to the employees union in RTC since 1977 for every two years. It has been 5 years since the last elections. Even though the Returning Officer had been appointed, not conducting elections for so long is illegal,” it stated.

The employees union demanded that the government and the RTC management conduct the elections following the court orders without any delays.

Separatism, terrorism come from outside India, says Union Minister Mehgwal

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Separatism and terrorism come from outside and is not native to people living in India, Union Minister of State for Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal said here on Sunday.

Meghwal was in Jammu to take part in an MSME conclave.

Asked about the arrest of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, Meghwal told reporters, “I was in Delhi for the Global Buddhist Summit and people from Leh and Ladakh were there. Everyone wants peace.

    MS Education Academy

“India will lead the process of peace in the world. Separatism and terrorism are not in the hearts of those living in India but come from outside.”

The Punjab Police arrested Amritpal Singh in Moga’s Rode village early on Sunday, ending an over a month-long manhunt against the radical preacher who styled himself after slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Amritpal has been taken to Assam’s Dibrugarh under the National Security Act.

The government is committed to undertaking the welfare of all the people and winning their hearts through good governance and development, Meghwal added.

“It will unite the country and make it great,” he said.

Development and good governance are key elements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and these will help bring peace to Jammu and Kashmir, added Meghwal, who is also the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.

“Democracy and good governance are the two important elements of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. These elements will help bring peace and prosperity and that will create employment opportunities in the region,” he said.

Meghwal also claimed that Pakistan does not have democracy, development and employment.

“That is why you see such a situation in Pakistan,” Meghwal said when asked about that country’s alleged efforts to derail peace and progress in Jammu and Kashmir by engineering terror attacks.

  • Teachers union chief hires seasoned lawyer ahead of Hill testimony

Teachers union chief hires seasoned lawyer ahead of Hill testimony

    [ad_1]

She’s turned to Michael Bromwich, senior counsel at the white shoe Steptoe law firm, for help.

“It is undeniable that the pandemic resulted in tragic and continuing consequences for children,” Bromwich wrote on the union’s behalf Wednesday to subcommittee chair Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) and ranking member Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.).

“We make no progress towards addressing those very real problems by engaging in the type of scapegoating built on false allegations that appear to be the basis for this Subcommittee’s ‘investigation,’” Bromwich wrote in his letter to lawmakers, which was obtained by POLITICO.

Bromwich is widely known in Washington for his work representing former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe during the Trump-Russia investigation and Christine Blasey Ford, the California professor who alleged she was sexually assaulted by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

A former Justice Department inspector general, Bromwich has garnered a reputation as a pugnacious defender. His message to congressional Republicans on Wednesday suggests he will deploy a similar strategy.

Earlier this month, Wenstrup asked Weingarten to testify at an April 26 hearing on the consequences of Covid-19’s school closures.

That request followed a March 28 letter from Wenstrup to Weingarten, which informed the teachers’ union chief that the select committee was investigating “potential political interference” with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on reopening schools issued in February 2021.

Wenstrup’s March 28 letter alleged the union was granted “uncommon” access to edit the guidance before its release, citing media reports at the time, which it said ultimately resulted in the CDC advising that schools should remain closed in much of the country.

Bromwich countered that the union shared its views on the planned guidance in late January 2021 during a conference call between Weingarten, senior union staff, CDC officials and President Joe Biden’s office.

AFT officials then followed up in February 2021 to suggest language related to accommodations for high-risk educators and staff, and also proposed that the CDC include language that said its guidance may need to be updated in light of new virus variants.

In addition, the union also proposed a “trigger” threshold that would determine when schools should be closed based on positive test cases. But the CDC rejected that suggestion, according to Bromwich.

“The claim that the AFT’s agenda was ‘keeping schools closed,’ and that it shifted CDC’s guidance to match that agenda, is utterly false,” Bromwich wrote to lawmakers on Wednesday.

“In fact, the AFT’s role was extremely limited,” he wrote. “It proposed changes that amounted to a few sentences in a 38-page document. The need to clarify these points was obvious and should have been uncontroversial.”

Wenstrup has asked Weingarten to supply documents, communications and a list of meetings between the AFT and the CDC, department of Health and Human Services and the Executive Office of the President regarding the guidance, among other items.

Wenstrup also issued similar requests to more than a dozen other organizations — including the National Education Association, AASA, The School Superintendents Association; the National Association of Secondary School Principals the National Association of Elementary School Principals and National School Boards Association.

Weingarten “welcomes the opportunity to testify and cooperate with the committee’s work,” an AFT spokesperson said on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Wenstrup did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

  • Schooled: LA superintendent gets crash course in California union politics

Schooled: LA superintendent gets crash course in California union politics

    [ad_1]

“I am grateful that we reached an agreement with UTLA in a manner that reflects the dedicated work of our employees, provides a better academic experience for our students and raises the standards of compensation in Los Angeles and across the country,” Carvalho said in a statement.

It was a critical moment for Carvalho, who received acclaim for his work in Miami but faces an entirely different labor environment in Los Angeles. A three-day support staff strike last month shuttered Los Angeles schools and kept more than 350,000 students out of class. He escaped a repeat by reaching an agreement with the powerful UTLA.

“I’m hopeful that he learned some very valuable lessons,” UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz said in an interview. “Because he could have had two strikes within two months, and what would that have said about his leadership?”

The superintendent has spoken frequently about the need to make up instructional time lost during the pandemic since arriving in Los Angeles. Another strike would have dealt another setback to that goal and put his fragile relationship with labor at risk.

“I think he’s done an excellent job of positioning himself as an action-oriented leader, but I think he greatly underestimated the difference in the strength of labor unions at the bargaining table in California relative to Florida,” said Eric Premack, founder of the California Charter Schools Development Center, who used to do consulting work for Los Angeles Unified and other school districts.

Carvalho came to the U.S. from Portugal as an undocumented immigrant after he graduated from high school, settling in South Florida. He worked construction and restaurant jobs, and was at times homeless before becoming a teacher. He later did communications work and lobbied for the Miami-Dade School District, which he went on to run for 13 years.

He gained national prominence in the role, rebuffing entreaties to run for Congress and lead New York City Schools. But it wasn’t until 2022 that he left Miami, exhausted by his clashes with Gov. Ron DeSantis and other Republican politicians over school mask policies, curriculum restrictions and the treatment of LGBTQ students.

“I had been approached regarding LAUSD four times over the past decade, and concerning the political dynamic in Florida — a state I love, great people, great talent — I thought this would be a better match for me,” Carvalho told reporters last week in Sacramento, where he came to lobby for more school funding and other education proposals.

His 14-month tenure has been full of challenges, including a cyberattack that exposed families’ personal data, a student’s fatal opioid overdose at school and sliding enrollment and chronic absenteeism.

But he’s faced the steepest learning curve with bargaining.

In March, teachers, bus drivers and cafeteria workers walked picket lines, some holding cardboard signs deriding Carvalho’s fine suits and $440,000 salary. One included a picture of the superintendent surrounded by cartoon money bags with the caption “Mr. Miami Vice Grip.”

The superintendent’s administration, meanwhile, was negotiating on behalf of a school board in which the majority of members are aligned with UTLA. Labor-friendly President Jackie Goldberg told reporters the board is “completely overjoyed” with the agreement reached by the union and superintendent.

Carvalho has avoided another strike, for now. But for California superintendents and unions, the bargaining never really stops. The contract for support staff expires after next year, along with a massive chunk of federal coronavirus relief funding, compounding financial pressure on the district.

But he insists that he’s happy to have Florida and its politics at a 2,000-mile distance.

“We don’t ban books here. We don’t restrict curriculum. We acknowledge all individuals, regardless of gender, persuasion, whatever it is,” Carvalho said last week. “I think dealing with a different, more forceful union is a decent tradeoff I’m willing to take any day.”

Sambalpur: A high-level BJP delegation comprising Union Minister Bisheswar Tudu and several party MPs and MLAs was on Tuesday detained after being prevented from entering violence-hit Sambalpur city

The team members were intercepted at Sripura Chhak on the Jharsuguda-Sambalpur road and denied permission to move further. Later, they were taken to a nearby Thelkoli police station and detained.

Sambalpur Additional Superintendent of Police Tapan Kumar Mohanty said: “The BJP delegation was denied permission to enter the city because they were not abiding by the provision under section 144 of CrPC. They cannot be allowed entry into the city at a time when curfew is in force.”

The team comprised Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Tribal Affairs Bisheswar Tudu, MPs Jual Oram (Sundergarh) and Suresh Pujari (Bargarh), MLAs Nauri Nayak, Shankar Oram and Kusum Tete, state BJP president Manmohan Samal and Sameer Mohanty.

“I strongly condemn the Odisha government for preventing a Union Minister’s visit to Sambalpur where a tribal youth was killed during violence. As the country’s Tribal Affairs minister and myself also a tribal, it is my duty to meet the family members of the deceased tribal youth. However, I was stopped in the mid-way by police,” Tudu told reporters at Sripura Chhak where the team was intercepted by police.

Stating that he will raise the issue with the Central government, Tudu said “It is unfortunate that the Sambalpur district administration stopped me and my colleagues to enter the city. They (administration) were given prior information regarding our visit.”

Sundergarh MP Jual Oram, said: “It is unfortunate that the police stopped the delegation comprising BJP MPs and MLAs. We have been denied entry into the city while the rioters are moving freely.”

Bargarh MP Suresh Pujari also came down heavily on the state government. “They prevented us fearing exposure of the police inefficiencies. The police have failed to arrest the killers of a tribal youth during the violence. The district collector of Sambalpur has been acting beyond her power.”

Earlier, Pujari alleged that he was also not allowed to come out of his residence at Sakhipada. “I will raise the matter in Parliament,” Pujari said.

BJP Odisha unit president Manmohan Samal, who is also a member of the delegation alleged that “the CM is fearing the BJP leaders as they might expose the inefficiencies in handling of the largescale violence in Sambalpur.” PTI COR AAM
