Lucknow: UNICEF India representative Cynthia McCaffrey on Tuesday met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and discussed the status of the ongoing health, education and nutrition programmes being run in collaboration with the UN agency.

McCaffrey, who met Adityanath at his residence, said that UNICEF-India was taking forward many programmes in the field of social health, education, women and child nutrition in Uttar Pradesh with the support of the state government.

UNICEF is also supporting the local administration in aspirational districts, she said, adding the UN agency was ready to provide technical and academic support to the state government for new programmes in the future.

Appreciating the state’s efforts in social health, McCaffrey said there has been a significant decline in the maternal, infant and neonatal mortality rates in the state in the last six years.

Availability of health services increased even in remote villages due to planned efforts while awareness programs are yielding good results, the UNICEF India representative said, adding that this success of Uttar Pradesh is inspiring.

McCaffrey said that Chief Minister Adityanath has adopted a wonderful strategy for the eradication of Japanese Encephalitis.

The state government has succeeded in preventing the disease in 38 districts. This is a great achievement, she said.

Referring to the Covid management in different countries, McCaffrey said the way the Uttar Pradesh administration dealt with the high population density and various social challenges is highly commendable.

Uttar Pradesh has presented the best model of Covid management, she said.

She also praised the efforts being made under the leadership of CM Adityanath in the direction of women’s safety, respect and self-reliance.

While congratulating the UNICEF representative on her arrival in the state, Adityanath praised the cooperation being received from the UN agency in the field of public health, including dealing with encephalitis, water-borne diseases, Covid management and proposed to cooperate even further with the organisation on such programmes.

8-year war leaves 11M Yemeni children need humanitarian aid: Unicef

Aden: The eight-year war in Yemen has left 11 million children in need of humanitarian aid and 2.2 million suffer from acute malnutrition, the Unicef said.

More than 540,000 children face life-threatening severe acute malnutrition and are in urgent need of medical treatment, the Unicef said in a press statement on Friday.

It warned that the likelihood of malnutrition would keep rising if appropriate measures are not taken promptly, Xinhua news agency reported.

More than 2.3 million children are living in internally displaced persons camps, where they receive inadequate care due to a lack of medicine and sanitary facilities, the Unicef said, adding that more than 11,000 children were killed or seriously injured in Yemen between March 2015 and November 2022.

Yemeni families in distress often make harmful decisions for their children, such as child marriage, child labour, or military recruitment. More than 4,000 children have been recruited as soldiers by the various warring factions in Yemen, and hundreds of schools and health facilities were attacked or used by the military, said the Unicef.

“The lives of millions of vulnerable children in Yemen remain at risk due to the almost unimaginable, unbearable, consequences of the crushing, unending war,” Unicef representative in Yemen, Peter Hawkins, was quoted as saying.

The organisation said it needed $484 million to continue its humanitarian relief to Yemeni children throughout 2023. If the funding is not secured, Unicef may have to scale back the vital assistance to Yemeni children who are at risk.

Yemen has been embroiled in a devastating civil war since late 2014, with the Houthi rebels fighting against the internationally-recognised government and its allies, which include a Saudi Arabia-led coalition.

The conflict plunged the Arab country to the brink of collapse, leaving millions of people without access to adequate nutrition.

The UN has been pushing for a cease-fire and peace talks in Yemen.

UNICEF calls for protecting Palestine children amid increased violence

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed concern about the recent escalation of violence, which left many children dead and injured in the occupied Palestinian territories.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, UNICEF stated that since the beginning of 2023, seven Palestinian children have been killed, and many have been injured or affected by the cycle of violence, expressing fear of the current situation in the occupied territories.

UNICEF stressed “the right of all children to enjoy special protection under international human rights law,” and said, “All their rights, including the right to life and protection, must be preserved at all times.”

UNICEF said children continue to pay the highest price for violence.

UNICEF stressed that “violence is never a solution, and all forms of violence against children are unacceptable and this must end.”

In this context, it called on all parties to “stop the escalation, exercise maximum restraint, and refrain from using violence, especially against children, in accordance with international law.”
