White House: Tenn. Republicans’ expected vote to expel Dems over gun protests ‘undemocratic’

The Tennessee Legislature has captured national attention after three state lawmakers — Reps. Gloria Johnson of Knoxville, Justin Jones of Nashville and Justin Pearson of Memphis — used a bullhorn to amplify calls for gun policy reform as demonstrators at the state capitol called for lawmakers to take action last week. The lawmakers approached the lectern without being recognized, interrupting legislative business. House Speaker Cameron Sexton called the protests “an insurrection.”

The lawmakers were quickly stripped of their committee assignments, and GOP lawmakers filed three resolutions this week seeking the Democrats’ removal, in a rare and historic step that the state House has taken only twice since the 1860s. If the vote succeeds, it will mark an unprecedented use of power by Republicans who control both chambers of the Tennessee Legislature. The GOP holds 75 of the 99 seats in the House, and the three Democrats will be removed if the vote falls along party lines. The rare step typically occurs only when members are accused of crimes or ethics violations.

The White House has weighed in twice this week, criticizing the action for its partisan nature amid a national epidemic of gun violence that continues to rock the country. So far this year, the U.S. has seen 141 mass shootings and 65 children have been killed because of gun violence, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The White House on Thursday repeated President Joe Biden’s futile pleas for Congress to reimplement an assault weapons ban. Jean-Pierre also said the president would continue his push for Congress to eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability and to implement universal background checks.

Hyderabad: ‘Bandi Sanjay’s arrest is undemocratic,’ says Kishan

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Following the arrest of Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Union Minister Kishan Reddy on Thursday termed the latter’s arrest as ‘undemocratic’ and said that the state BJP chief’s arrest was to divert people’s attention.

“Bandi Sanjay’s arrest is undemocratic. His’s arrest was to divert people’s attention. BJP leaders are not afraid of cases and jails. Lakhs of BJP workers are ready to go to jail for the sake of the people,” said Kishan Reddy while talking to the reporters.

Kishan Reddy said that Bandi Sanjay was arrested in the middle of the night and mentally harassed.

“Sanjay was tortured like a terrorist. It is alleged that the police arrested Bandi Sanjay just to see happiness in KCR’s eyes. He said that as the elections are approaching, KCR’s anarchic rule is visible,” he said.

Earlier, BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar along with three others were sent to judicial custody till April 19 in the SSC paper leak case.

“Bandi Sanjay and 3 others have been sent to judicial custody till April 19 and will be shifted to Karimnagar jail,” said Advocate Karuna Sagar, lawyer of Bandi Sanjay.

“We will be filing a contempt proceeding against the investigative officer for violating the SC guidelines. We are planning to challenge the order in High Court tomorrow,” he added.

On Wednesday, Bandi Sanjay Kumar was detained by police late at night from his residence in Karimnagar.

The office of Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar has said that the detention of Bandi Sanjay Kumar in the SSC paper leak case is “totally undemocratic” and there is a “clear-cut conspiracy” in the whole episode.

“The Police have not yet announced officially on what grounds he was detained. There is a clear-cut conspiracy in the whole episode. The detention of Bandi Sanjay is totally undemocratic. The BRS government is gradually losing credibility among the public hence they are performing these stunts. This paper leak is out and out a failure of the BRS government,” the office of Bandi Sanjay Kumar told ANI.

An official from Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s office also alleged that the detention has been done to cover up the recent failures of the Telangana government regarding school and job examinations.

BRS condemns Sisodia’s arrest, calls it undemocratic

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana’s ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Sunday condemned the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi liquor policy scam case.

BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao termed Sisodia’s arrest as undemocratic and alleged that the BJP’s treatment of opposition is vicious.

The BRS leader wanted to know how many ED, IT and CBI raids were conducted on BJP leaders or their kith and kin in last 8 years? “Kya Sab Ke Sab BJP Wale Raja Satya Harischandra Ke Cousins/Rishtedaar Hain?,” he asked.

“The country is watching how PM’s cronies are protected despite serious allegations & how Opposition leaders are hounded,” he tweeted.

“Modi’s Operandi is clear Target opposition parties by all means at his disposal; Either split the parties Or poach their MLAs & dislodge elected Governments If nothing works, use their only allies; CBI, ED & IT to harass and launch a smear campaign Back it with Paid Troll Army,” added KTR.

In a statement, he alleged that BJP was resorting to politics of deceit by letting loose government agencies on the opposition

KTR, as the leader is popularly known, said that Sisodia’s arrest is part of a conspiracy to use central government agencies to weaken the parties in the states and in regions where the BJP cannot come to power.

He said the political conspiracies of the BJP against the opposition posed serious threat to democracy in the country.

Terming Sisodia’s arrest as the height of the BJP’s vendetta politics, he said that Sisodia was arrested after BJP suffered defeat in the Delhi mayoral election.

“BJP does cowardly politics, unable to face the leaders of the strong parties questioning the inefficient policies and corruption,” he said.

KTR stated that the nation is watching the unethical and evil politics of the BJP.

“People will definitely reject BJP’s conspiracy politics. BJP leaders will face the same fate in future,” he said.

“BJP is an undemocratic party that has already pulled down 9 state governments in the country. BJP makes conspiracies to damage the parties that do not succumb to its temptations,” he said.

KTR said that in Telangana, the BJP’s conspiracy to buy MLAs was foiled. People have seen on camera the efforts by the BJP to buy MLAs. The time for BJP’s undemocratic nefarious conspiracies is near, he added.

  • Levying Property Tax Arbitrary, Undemocratic: Tarigami

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former legislator and CPI( M) leader Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami has termed the levying of property tax in Jammu and Kashmir as “arbitrary and undemocratic”.

In a statement CPI(M) leader Tarigami said that the process of collecting tax and deciding the values of the tax is the sole prerogative of the elected institutions — the legislature to frame laws and the municipal councils/corporations to decide the forms and different values according to their objective realities.

“Levying property tax in absence of an elected government is quite unconstitutional. Even the elected municipal bodies were not consulted,” he said in a statement.

He added that the most objectionable part of the notification is the decision of deciding the values from the centre.

“These are the towns and cities to decide the values and not the centre, as mandated by the 74th Constitutional Amendment. The notification is ultra vires to  the constitutional mandate,” Tarigami said, adding that the locking period of three years is also arbitrary.

“The cities must be given the prerogative to decide when they want to change their values and there should not be any particular locking period,” he said.

He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the notification.
