UP: Umesh Pal’s wife releases poster expressing gratitude for ‘decimation’ of her husband’s killers

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal issued a poster here on Tuesday, expressing her gratitude for the decimation of the killers of her husband and BSP MLA Raju Pal. The poster carried the images of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP MLA Sidharth Nath Singh.

It also had the images of Umesh Pal, Jaya Pal and Raju Pal.

At a public meeting of Adityanath here, some people arrived with a poster that read in Hindi: “Umesh Pal, Raju Pal ke hatyaro ko mitti mein milane ke liye dhanyavad (thanks for decimating the killers of Umesh Pal and Raju Pal). Bulldozer Baba zindabad, Sidharth Nath Singh zindabad”, Singh, the MLA from Allahabad West, confirmed.

A pamphlet carrying the name and photograph of Jaya Pal and making an appeal to people to extend support to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh has also gone viral on social media.

“Whatever Yogiji had said, he has delivered. He has decimated the mafia,” the pamphlet read.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his residence in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area.

Based on a complaint from Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP-MLA court held Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases were registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from the Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh by road for hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

On April 15, Ahmad and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction, while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.

Atiq Ahmed lawyer booked for criminal conspiracy in Umesh Pal murder case

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s lawyer Khan Shoulat Hanif has been booked for criminal conspiracy in the Umesh Pal murder case, an official said on Saturday.

Speaking to PTI, Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Deepak Bhukar said Hanif’s name was added under Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code to the FIR registered at Dhoomanganj police station in the Umesh Pal murder case.

“We came to know that Hanif shared pictures of Umesh Pal with Ahmed’s son Asad days before he was attacked,” Bhukar told PTI.

    MS Education Academy

Asad, the third of Ahmed’s five sons, was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13.

Sources said the police might soon file a remand application in court to interrogate Hanif, who is currently lodged in Naini Central Prison after being sentenced to life imprisonment in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case.

Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two security personnel were shot dead on February 24.

On February 25, the police registered a case against Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine other accomplices at Dhoomanganj police station.

A special court here on March 28 convicted Ahmed, Hanif and Dinesh Pasi and sentenced them to life in prison in the 17-year-old kidnapping case.

Hanif and Pasi were detained in Naini Central Prison while Ahmed was sent to Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad.

Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party MP, and Ashraf were shot dead on April 15 by three assailants when they were being taken by the police for a medical examination. They were brought here in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

Prayagraj: An alleged member of the Atiq Ahmad gang, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, was arrested on Wednesday by the police here, officials said.

Asad Kalia, a resident of New Chakia, has been arrested by the Kareli police, an official statement said.

Kalia was considered a right-hand of Atiq’s wife Shaista Praveen, who is wanted in Umesh Pal murder case and is absconding.

A number of criminal cases including attempt to murder, and under the Arms Act are pending against Kalia at the Kareli police station, it said.

  • Umesh Pal murder: The story of a bloody fallout

Umesh Pal murder: The story of a bloody fallout

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: It began with a defeat in an election, and the bruised egos had a bloody fallout.

In 2004, after Atiq Ahmed won the Lok Sabha polls to Phulpur constituency here, his younger brother Ashraf contested from Allahabad West Assembly seat – polls necessitated after Atiq Ahmed resigned to become an MP – on a Samajwadi Party ticket.

For Ashraf, victory was a foregone conclusion but he surprisingly lost to Raju Pal, a novice candidate fielded by the BSP.

    MS Education Academy

Atiq Ahmed could not digest the defeat since it came as a challenge to his own fiefdom.

The electoral tussle turned into political rivalry and on January 25, 2005, a day before Republic Day, when the BSP MLA was leaving for his home from Swaroop Rani Nehru hospital, a car overtook his SUV in the Sulem Sarai area of the city and Raju Pal was shot dead by assailants who heavily opened fire on his car.

Two other people along with Raju Pal were also killed in the attack and the post-mortem report had stated that around 18 bullets were found in Raju Pal’s body.

A CBI probe into the incident named 10 persons as accused including Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother.

Raju Pal’s wife, Puja Pal, whom he married just 11 days before his murder, then contested from the Allahabad West seat but lost to Ashraf. However, she was again given a ticket by the BSP in 2007 Assembly elections and she won.

In the 2017 Assembly polls, Puja lost to BJP’s Siddharth Nath Singh but won the 2022 polls from Chail seat.

Ashraf’s political career could not take off despite the best efforts of his brother and for this, he never forgave Raju Pal and his friends.

Umesh Pal, an associate of Raju Pal, was the main witness in his murder.

Since Umesh Pal refused to succumb to Atiq Ahmed’s pressure, he was abducted in 2006 and forced to give a statement in court in their favour of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf in the Raju Pal murder.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were convicted and were awarded a life sentence in the abduction case, a month after Umesh Pal was shot dead in February this year.

In between, Umesh Pal’s stature grew independently and he was no longer comfortable tagging behind Puja Pal, widow of Raju Pal.

Sources claim that Umesh Pal was finding acceptance in the Karwariya camp.

Kapil Muni Karwariya is a former BJP MP and his brother Uday Bhan Karwariya, a former MLA – both were awarded a life sentence for the murder of SP leader Jawahar Yadav.

When Uday Bhan’s wife Neelam Karwariya won the Meja seat on a BJP ticket in 2017, Umesh Pal became friends with the family whose clout was growing by the day.

Interestingly, a number of Atiq Ahmed’s supporters also switched loyalties to the Karwariya family and photographs of Ghulam Mohd – who was shot dead with Asad on Thursday – posing with Neelam Karwariya at her birthday party are doing rounds on the social media.

After the murder of Umesh Pal, in one video Puja Pal is seen reprimanding Umesh Pal’s wife for ‘feeding parathas to those people despite my warning’.

The police, for some reason, did not pursue this angle.

Sources in Prayagraj now say that Umesh Pal was killed because his loyalty was suspected – both to Atiq and to Karwariyas.

Puja Pal’s studied silence on the Umesh Pal murder and its consequences also leaves much to be said.

However, since investigators are firmly focusing on Atiq Ahmed’s role in the murder, the truth, perhaps, will ‘never be known’.

Killing of Atiq Ahmed as heinous as Umesh Pal murder case: Mayawati

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday said the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in police custody in Prayagraj raises serious questions over the style of functioning of the Uttar Pradesh government.

It would be better if the Supreme Court takes cognisance of this “extremely serious and worrisome” incident, which is being discussed across the country, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said.

In a series of tweets, she said, “Now, instead of ‘rule of law by law’ in Uttar Pradesh, how appropriate is it that it becomes ‘encounter Pradesh’? Something to think about.”

    MS Education Academy

“The shooting dead of Atiq Ahmed, who was brought from Gujarat jail and his brother Ashraf, who was brought from Bareilly jail last night in Prayagraj, in police custody, is just as heinous as the Umesh Pal murder case. It raises serious questions on the law and order of the UP government, and its style of functioning,” she said.

BJP leader Umesh Pal was killed by Atiq’s men in 2005.

Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup.

The brothers, both jailed in Prayagraj, were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews around 10 pm. The horrifying visuals were circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels. The last rites of Ahmed’s son Asad, who was gunned down in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, were performed here just hours before the shooting.

Briefing reporters about the incident, Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, Ramit Sharma said the three assailants, who were arrested immediately after the incident, had joined the group of reporters who were trying to get sound bites from Ahmed and Ashraf.

“In accordance with a mandatory legal requirement, Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were brought to the hospital for a medical examination. According to preliminary information, three men posing as journalists approached them and opened fire. Ahmed and Ashraf were killed in the attack. The attackers have been held and are being questioned,” Sharma said.

Officials said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has formed a three-member judicial commission to probe the killing of Ahmed and his brother.

UP: Atiq Ahmad, his wife among 5 booked in forgery case linked to Umesh Pal’s murder

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Police have booked gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, his wife Shaista Parveen and son Ali in a forgery case linked to the murder of Umesh Pal, the key witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

The FIR was registered on Saturday at Dhoomanganj police station here in which two more persons — Mohammad Sabir and Rakesh alias Nakesh alias Lala — have been named, the Prayagraj police said in a statement.

During the investigations in the Umesh Pal murder case, police had detained Rakesh for questioning, the statement said.

    MS Education Academy

During interrogation, Rakesh said he had hidden a bag given by Parveen. Subsequently, the bag was recovered and two fake Aadhaar cards having the photo of Ali were found, police said, adding one of the Aadhaar cards carried the name of Sabir, son of Munne Siddiqui.

According to police, the case has been registered under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the Indian Penal Code.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP/MLA court held Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases have been registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat by road for hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

In 2006, Atiq Ahmad and his aides abducted Umesh Pal and forced him to give a statement in court in their favour. Umesh Pal had registered a complaint in this regard.

Umesh Pal murder: MP/MLA court rejects anticipatory bail plea of Shaista Parveen

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj:  An MP/MLA court on Thursday rejected the anticipatory bail application of Shaista Parveen, an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case and wife of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed.

MP/MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla rejected the application of Parveen after hearing both the sides and considering the circumstances and seriousness of the case, government counsel Gulab Chand Agrahari said.

On February 24, Umesh Pal’s security policemen Raghavendra Singh and Sandeep Nishad were gunned down. The next day, an FIR was registered against Atiq Ahmed, Shaista Parveen, Ashraf, Guddu Muslim, Ghulam and nine other people at the Dhoomanganj police station on the complaint of Jaya Pal, wife of Umesh Pal.

The special court had on March 28 sentenced Atiq Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi and Khan Shoulat Hanif to rigorous life imprisonment in the 17-year-old case of kidnapping of Umesh Pal, the main witness of the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case.

The court had acquitted seven people, including Atiq Ahmed’s brother Ashraf, in this case due to lack of evidence.

A charge sheet was filed against 11 people, out of whom one died during trial.

Will not challenge verdict now: Umesh Pal’s widow

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: Slain Umesh Pal’s widow, Jaya Pal, has said that she hoped for capital punishment for mafia don Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf but added that she will not challenge the court order in higher court.

Jaya Pal said, “We seek justice from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who is like our father. We have been fighting against Atiq and his gang and it is time to end ‘terrorism’ once and for all. I will carry forward the fight that my husband was fighting because I want justice and not terror. I want his terror to end.”

Pal’s mother Shanti Pal said, “My son always fought like a lion and Atiq and his brother should be given the death penalty for killing Umesh and two police gunners. We cannot fight against Atiq and his family members alone. We request Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to give justice to us.”

Atiq Ahmad, meanwhile, said before being taken back to Ahmedabad, that his lawyers would appeal against the verdict.

“I have respect for the judiciary, but ‘sazaa galat hui hai (the punishment has been wrongly dealt)’. I intend to appeal the verdict in the high court,” he said.

Atiq Ahmad and two others were given a life sentence by the MP/MLA court in Prayagraj on Tuesday. The three accused — Atiq, Saulat Hanif, a lawyer, and Dinesh Pasi — have been convicted under Section 364A, which provides punishment for kidnapping a person and putting the person concerned in danger of being murdered, and other sections of Indian Penal Code. The maximum punishment under this section is death sentence.

This is the first conviction of Atiq, who is facing 101 criminal cases, 52 of them under trial.

The special MP/MLA court acquitted Atiq’s brother Ashraf and six other accused, saying the prosecution ‘failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt’ their alleged complicity in the conspiracy to kidnap, torture and threaten Umesh into retracting his statement about being a witness in the MLA murder case.

Umesh Pal’s widow Jaya Pal said, “Atiq and Ashraf always work in tandem and I see no reason behind Ashraf’s acquittal. If these two are around, they can do anything from inside the jail. My husband’s murder in February is proof of this.”

Umesh Pal, a zila panchayat member in 2005, was a witness in BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case in which Atiq and his brother were the main accused.

Raju Pal was killed on January 25, 2005. Umesh Pal later alleged he was kidnapped at gunpoint on February 28, 2006 as he refused to buckle under pressure from Atiq and his gang.

He lodged an FIR on July 5, 2007, against Atiq, his brother and nine others. The accused were booked under Sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 120B (conspiracy) and other sections of IPC.

The trial of the Umesh abduction case was concluded on March 21 and the court fixed March 28 for delivery of the verdict.

On March 24, the judge directed the authorities to ensure the physical presence of all the accused at the time of the delivery of the verdict. Atiq was shifted from Sabarmati Jail and Ashraf from Bareilly Jail to Naini Central Jail.

On Tuesday, a large number of lawyers, who assembled at the court, started shouting slogans when Atiq and other accused were being produced, seeking death penalty for them.

Umesh was killed in a daring daylight attack in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj on February 24, 2023.

According to district government counsel (DGC), Gulab Chandra Agrahri, who appeared on the prosecution side, Atiq and Ashraf are accused in all the three cases — Umesh Pal abduction, his murder and Raju Pal murder.

Atiq was a five-time MLA from Allahabad West, winning the seat consecutively between 1989 and 2002. He also won the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat on the SP ticket in 2004.

Ashraf won the Allahabad West Assembly seat in bypoll in 2005.

Atiq Ahmad, 2 others given life sentences in 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: An MP-MLA court here on Tuesday held gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case, and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

Ahmad’s brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf and six others have been acquitted in the case.

Special MP-MLA court judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla held Ahmad, Saulat Hanif, a lawyer, and Dinesh Pasi guilty in the case, government counsel Gulab Chandra Agrahari said.

The three were pronounced guilty under Indian Penal Code section 364-A (kidnapping or abduction in order to murder), Agrahari said.

The maximum sentence under the section is death sentence.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had last month charged the Samajwadi Party with garlanding mafias like Atiq Ahmad and had said in the state assembly that “mafia (Atiq Ahmad) ko mitti me mila denge (will destroy the mafia).”

After the killing of then BSP MLA Raju Pal on January 25, 2005, Umesh Pal, then a zila panchayat member, had told police he was a witness to the murder.

Umesh Pal had alleged that when he refused to retract and buckle under pressure from Ahmad, he was kidnapped at gunpoint on February 28, 2006.

An FIR in the case was registered on July 5, 2007, against Ahmed, his brother and others.

The police had submitted a chargesheet in the matter against 11 people. One of them later died.

Ahmad and Ashraf are also accused of being involved in a conspiracy, while they were both in prison, to kill Umesh Pal. Umesh Pal was gunned down outside his Prayagraj residence on February 24 last.

Earlier, Ahmad, Ashraf and others were brought to court from Naini jail in separate police vans and produced in the court amid tight security.

Both of them were on Monday brought to the Naini Central Jail here after long road journeys from two separate prisons.

Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal ealier said she won’t be going to the court but will “pray” that Ahmad gets capital punishment.

“I am not going to the court. I will be in my house and pray for capital punishment for Ahmad. If they get life imprisonment, they will continue to do the same things that they did with my husband,” Jaya Pal told reporters.

On a complaint from Umesh Pal’s wife, a case was lodged at the Dhoomanganj police station in Prayagraj against Ahmad, his brother, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

Ahmad, a former Samajwadi Party MP from Phulpur, was shifted to the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat in June 2019 following a Supreme Court order after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault of real estate businessman Mohit Jaiswal while in prison in Uttar Pradesh.

He is named in more than 100 criminal cases, including the Umesh Pal murder case, police said.

  • Prayagraj authorities demolish ancestral home of Umesh Pal murder accused Mohammad Ghulam

Prayagraj authorities demolish ancestral home of Umesh Pal murder accused Mohammad Ghulam

    [ad_1]

Prayagraj: The Prayagraj Development Authority on Monday demolished the ancestral home of Mohammad Ghulam, an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Umesh Pal was a witness in the 2005 murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal.

Mohammad Ghulam’s brother Rahil Hasan, former president of the BJP Minority Morcha’s Mahanagar unit, claimed that Ghulam had sold off his share in the house and had nothing to do with it.

A Prayagraj Development Authority team reached Rasoolabad in the Shivkuti area around noon and vacated the house. Roads on both sides of the house were barricaded before the demolition process began using two bulldozers in the presence of a large police force.

The action was in line with the demolition of unauthorised buildings of “mafia and anti-socials” after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath’s “mitti mein mila denge” comment in the assembly during which he also accused the opposition Samajwadi Party of patronising gangster-politicians such as Atiq Ahmed.

Ahmed is the main accused in the Raju Pal murder case. He was recently booked in connection with the killing of Umesh Pal.

Local residents stood on rooftops and across the barricades to witness the demolition, which was completed in four hours.

A Prayagraj Development Authority official said the authorities did not pass the blueprint of the house and the construction was “unauthorised”.

Speaking to reporters, Hasan — Ghulam’s brother and the former BJP Minority Morcha office-bearer — said, “We have been depositing house tax and electricity bills on time. ‘Bhai’ (Ghulam) has done wrong things and our whole family is against him.

“We have decided that if something like this (killing in an encounter) happens, we will not even take his body. Our family is innocent but the whole family is being blamed for this incident (Umesh Pal murder).”

Claiming that Ghulam had nothing to do with their demolished home, Hasan said, “He had sold off his share in the house and asked for a place to stay for some time, saying that he would shift after building his own house.”

“But this could not happen and today the roof over our heads has been removed,” Hasan added.

On March 3, the BJP’s Mahanagar unit chief Ganesh Kesarwani disbanded the BJP Minority Morcha and removed Hasan from his post as president after Ghulam’s alleged involvement in the Umesh Pal murder came to the fore.

Ghulam is among the five accused on whom the Uttar Pradesh Police has announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh. The other four are Ahmed’s son Asad, Arman, Guddu and Sabir.

On March 13, the Uttar Pradesh Police increased the reward for anyone providing information leading to their arrest from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

Umesh Pal and his police security guard Sandeep Nishad were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj on February 24. His other security guard, who was also injured in the attack, died in hospital a few days later.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered against Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

Two men allegedly linked to the murder — Arbaaz and Vijay Chowdhary alias Usman — were killed in encounters with the police on February 27 and March 6, respectively.

Ahmed, a former MP, is currently lodged in a Gujarat jail.

Demolition of properties belonging to people close to Ahmed gained momentum after Adityanath told the assembly that his government would come down on heavily on mafia operating in the state.

“In mafiyon ko mitti me mila denge (We will finish off these gangsters),” Adityanath had told the House.
