Ahmedabad: Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday felicitated the India U-19 women’s cricket team for its triumph in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa, saying the feat will encourage many girls to take up the sport and realise their dreams.

“I would likely to congratulate you on the magnificent achievement. The entire nation will celebrate (the triumph) for years to come.

“For me, my cricketing dreams started in 1983 but by winning this World Cup, you have given birth to many dreams. It was a magnificent performance,” Tendulkar said during the felicitation ceremony just before the start of the series-deciding third T20I between India and New Zealand here on Wednesday.

“By winning this World Cup, you have given a dream to young girls in India to represent the country.

“The beginning of the WPL (Women’s Premier League) is going to be the biggest thing. I believe in equality for men and women, and not just in sports. There should be equal opportunities,” he added.

Tendulkar said the BCCI is doing its best for the growth of women’s cricket in the country.

“What BCCI has been able to do and the officials’ contribution in helping women’s cricket prosper, I think it’s a sign that we will really do well (in future).”

During the brief felicitation function, which was also attended by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, president Roger Binny, vice-president Rajeev Shukla and treasurer Ashish Shelar, the dignitaries handed over a cheque of Rs five crore to the victorious India U-19 women’s team as announced by the board secretary earlier.

Former India captain Anjum Chopra showers praise on the U19 Women’s team

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former India captain Anjum Chopra showered praise on the U19 Women’s team who won the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, saying the country’s name being written in golden letters for winning the first-ever edition of the competition is a big deal.

“Firstly, winning the World Cup is a big deal and then the Under-19 women’s winning the inaugural World Cup by which the name of India will be written on it in golden letters is a big deal. By the way, the women’s cricket team has played the semi-finals of the World Cup many times and also played the finals many times but never won the trophy.”

“So, I understand it is a very different feeling and now it looks like we wish we were little kids and once again get a chance to play that’s how I feel. I am so excited that there is no limit to happiness, and it looks like I’ve won the World Cup and great! It’s a golden opportunity for all the cricketers for the bright future ahead of them,” said Anjum to former India men’s player Aakash Chopra on JioCinema’s new daily show ‘Aakashvani’.

At the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Sunday, Shafali Verma & Co produced a superb bowling performance coupled with some outstanding fielding to bowl out England for just 68.

Fast bowler Titas Sadhu, off-spinner Archana Devi and leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra were accurate in their line, length and found enough help to pick two wickets each. Shafali, left-arm spinners Mannat Kashyap and Sonam Yadav took a scalp each in a dominating bowling performance.

The fielding, despite a few blips, was athletic with some exceptional catches taken by Archana and Gongadi Trisha as England never got going with the bat. In chasing 69, on a slow pitch aiding the spinners, India lost Shafali and Shweta Sehrawat in the first four overs.

But Soumya Tiwari (24 not out) and Gongadi Trisha (24) shared a vital 46-run stand for the third wicket to complete the chase in 14 overs and give India their first-ever World Cup title in women’s cricket.

Anjum further pointed out that opener Shweta Sehrawat, who was the tournament’s top-run getter with 297 runs, along with leg-spinner Parshavi Chopra, who picked 11 wickets, the second-most by a bowler in the competition and off-spinner Archana Devi will be the future superstars from the victorious Indian U19 team.

“Shweta Sehrawat is my highest and the top-ranked player in this Indian team. She is the one who has stood out and given stand-out performances in this World Cup. She nearly missed the Player of the series. In fact, she is the highest run-getter in this entire world cup and she has won three matches and also won the player of the match. So, by adding all these things, I think Shweta Sehrawat for me will be the number one pick.”

“Then Parshavi Chopra is a leg spinner, again very well done by her by giving the limited performances and the way she bowled. So, she will be my second pick and Archana Devi, a young budding off-spinner who also bats well. So, according to me these three players Archana Devi, Parshavi Chopra and right on top Shweta Sehrawat have been outstanding performers in this tournament.”

  • Indonesia claim historic first victory to end U19 Women’s T20 WC on high

Indonesia claim historic first victory to end U19 Women’s T20 WC on high

    [ad_1]

Benoni: Indonesia on Friday scripted history as they claimed their first-ever victory in ICC global tournament after beating Zimbabwe by three wickets in a play-off match to finish the Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup on a high, here.

Indonesia got off to a flier after being asked to bowl first, as captain Ni Luh Dewi bowled both of the Zimbabwe openers for golden ducks in the first three balls of the innings. And the skipper picked up a third wicket in her second over to leave the score at 8/3 and with Indonesia well on top.

Zimbabwe hunkered down to try and set some sort of a platform, and it somewhat reaped rewards later in the innings despite none of the top six scorings more than 13.

Tawana Marumani and Danielle Meikle were the players to build on the platform down the order, with both scoring 20 from 19 balls to lift their side to 86/8 from the 20 overs and something to work with.

That total could have been slightly higher were it not for the outstanding Dewi, who came back to remove both of the set batters and complete the tournament’s first five-wicket-haul.

Early wickets were also a feature of the chase, with three back in the hutch with just 23 runs on the board in the opening four overs as Kelis Ndhlovu (who finished with 3/8 from four overs) produced some magic with the ball.

Dewi’s 14 from 13 did provide some early impetus, and a 31-run partnership between Thersiana We and Gusti Ulansari moved Indonesia close to a famous win. But Zimbabwe threatened to come back in the see-saw encounter when Chipo Moyo (3/12) took two wickets in an over to give her side hope.

However, Indonesia’s numbers eight and nine got them over the line, with Ni Indriyani unbeaten on 9 not out from 11 and Ni Suarniasih scoring the winning run in her run-a-ball 12 not out.
Indonesia might not have won the inaugural ICC Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup, but they definitely won many hearts during their stay in South Africa.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 86 for 8 in 20 overs (Danielle Meikle 20, Tawana Marumani 20, Adel Zimunu 13, Ni Luh Ketut Wesika Ratna Dewi five for 18, Ni Kadek Ariani two for 7) lost to Indonesia 87 for 7 in 18 overs (Ni Luh Ketut Wesika Ratna Dewi 14, Thersiana Penu We 14, Ni Made Suarniasih 12 not out, Kelis Ndhlovu three for 8, Chipo Moyo three for 12) by three wickets.
