Twitter Blue with verification now in India, starts at Rs 650 per month

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Twitter will charge Rs 650 per month for its Blue service with verification on the web and Rs 900 on Android and iOS mobile devices in India, the company has confirmed.

Twitter Blue has now been extended to India, Brazil and Indonesia.

Elon Musk-run Twitter is also offering a discounted annual plan of Rs 6,800 per year in India, which translates to approximately Rs 566.67 per month.

With India launch, Twitter Blue is now available in 15 global markets including the US, Canada, Japan, the UK and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier this month, the micro-blogging platform Twitter expanded its Blue service subscription service to six more countries.

In December last year, Twitter relaunched its Blue subscription service with verification, costing $8 for Android users and $11 for iPhone owners per month globally.

Twitter has now begun allowing Blue subscribers in the US to create long tweets of up to 4,000 characters.

Twitter Blue subscribers will also see 50 per cent fewer ads in their home timeline.

With Blue checkmarks, Twitter Blue features offer subscribers a way to enhance and customise their Twitter experience — which include — custom app icons, custom navigation, top articles, undo tweet, longer video upload, and more.

Musk has now said that all legacy verified accounts will soon lose their Blue badges as those are ‘deeply corrupted’.

The micro-blogging platform has also launched a new service called Twitter Verification for Organisations, which is a service for business entities on Twitter that adds a gold checkmark to official business accounts.

Twitter has told businesses to pay $1,000 per month for retaining gold badges and brands and organisations which do not pay the money will lose their checkmarks.

House GOP hauls in former Twitter execs. The larger target: Biden

    [ad_1]

    congress house republicans 00814

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) said he was focused on understanding how Twitter identifies misinformation and what role the federal government allegedly played in pressuring the platform to remove content.

“I’m hopeful we can find out a lot of things,” Comer said, before listing a series of questions he wants answered. “What exactly Twitter’s policy was on determining what was disinformation and what wasn’t? Who was in charge of that? What role did the government play in telling Twitter what was disinformation and what wasn’t? What role did the government play in determining who was kicked off a platform? Were any tax dollars spent by the government?”

In promoting the hearing in the weeks leading up to Wednesday, though, Comer has framed it as part of an investigation of the Biden family itself, referring to the “Biden family’s shady business schemes.” The laptop purportedly included Hunter’s promises to arrange meetings between foreign executives and his father, who at the time was vice-president in the Obama administration.

Comer has said the committee’s investigation will “inform legislative solutions” related to protecting Americans’ First Amendment right to free speech and a free press, although his committee lacks the ability to introduce legislation.

When asked for comment on the panel’s investigation into the Biden family, White House spokesperson Ian Sams referred to an earlier tweet that called the House Republicans’ investigation “a political stunt.”

Either way, the hearing is likely to have little impact on the current operations of Twitter— given it’s now run by Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who has been courting Republicans since he bought the company in late October.

Committee members will also focus on information released in Musk’s “Twitter files” — reports purporting to show collusion between the FBI and company executives to quash the New York Post story. However, the files themselves showed no evidence that the FBI asked Twitter to censor the story, and multiple federal officials have denied the allegation.

Across the aisle, Democrats want to use the hearing for something completely different: To remind viewers of Twitter’s role in spreading right-wing extremist content ahead of the Jan. 6 insurrection. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the committee’s ranking member and a key leader on the Jan. 6 committee, wants to focus on how social media companies can contribute to violent events offline — and is not concerned about the politics of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

“Twitter is a private company,” Raskin said in an interview. “It’s not Congress’ role to run around second guessing the editorial judgements of private news entities.”

“On the other hand, if social media are being used for the purposes of inciting violent insurrections and coordinating violence against the government, I think that presents a serious problem under the First Amendment because the First Amendment does not allow deliberate incitement of imminent lawless action,” Raskin added.

Raskin has secured former Twitter employee Anika Collier Navaroli to be his Democratic witness. Navaroli appeared before the Jan. 6 committee to discuss Twitter’s failure to stop extremist posts leading up to the insurrectionists takeover of the U.S. Capitol.

Although social-media bias and platform regulation have grown into significant political issues over the past several years, the current House GOP has shown little appetite for serious regulation of the industry. Last week, party leaders passed over one of the industry’s strongest Republican critics, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), in favor of a more industry-friendly figure to run the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee.

House leadership has, however, remained laser-focused on the Biden angle of the Twitter story.

Comer sent a letter to Musk last October demanding that he hand over Twitter records pertaining to the laptop story immediately after the billionaire bought the company — and before the GOP had even won the House in the 2022 midterms.

The opening line of the letter read “Committee on Oversight and Reform Republicans are investigating the Biden family’s pattern of influence peddling to enrich themselves and President Biden’s involvement in these schemes.”

Three weeks after the Republicans won office, Musk obliged with what has now become the “Twitter files.” Comer, who has not called Musk to testify, referred to the billionaire as “a great American” last week.

The three former Twitter executives called by Republicans are:

    * Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s former chief legal officer, who Musk fired last October. She played a central role in blocking and then later reinstating the New York Post’s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop — saying initially that tweets about the reporting violated Twitter’s 2018 policy against publishing hacked materials.

*James Baker, Twitter’s former deputy general counsel who also previously worked as general counsel at the FBI during the investigation of whether Trump colluded with Russia, will also testify. He will likely face many questions from Republicans, especially related his past involvement in the Trump probe and claims Musk fired him in December for allegedly interfering in the publication of additional Twitter files.

    * Yoel Roth, Twitter’s former global head of trust and safety, who left in November after Musk’s takeover.

The witnesses are all appearing under an agreement that will allow them to share privileged information from when they worked at Twitter.

BJP leader Sunil Jakhar, Cong MP Manish Tewari engage in war of words on Twitter

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: BJP leader Sunil Jakhar and Congress MP Manish Tewari on Monday engaged in a war of words after the former used an article written by Tewari on the Adani issue to term the grand old party a “divided house”.

Amid the ongoing Adani-Hindenburg row, Jakhar took a dig at Tewari and the Congress, which has showcaused its Patiala MP Preneet Kaur for alleged anti-party activities, saying if another notice was in the offing.

Tewari, the Anandpur Sahib MP, hit back alleging Jakhar “never tries to understand anything holistically and thus tilts at windmills”.

“Congress-a house divided ! While it blames Govt of collusion, its own Punjab MP, in an article, sees Hindenburg report as a geo-political conspiracy to sabotage India’s growing strategic prowess. Another show cause notice in offing, after one issued to Mrs Parneet Kaur?” tweeted Jakhar, a member of BJP’s national executive.

The Congress suspended Preneet Kaur on February 3 and had also asked her to explain why she should not be expelled for anti-party activities.

Kaur, the four-time MP from Patiala, is the wife of former chief minister Amarinder Singh, who joined the BJP after being ousted from the Congress.

Reacting to Jakhar, Tewari said, “Difficulty with my friend @sunilkjakhar is-he never tries to read/understand anything holistically & thus tilts at windmills In my article in @IndianExpress I have explicitly laid out Case for a JPC. He perhaps never served on one. A JPC looks at all aspects fairly.”

Jakhar replied to Tewari’s comment and said his tweet was aimed at the Congress.

“Sh. @ManishTewari is right that I haven’t grasped the meaning of his word-play. It’s because I’m not a Janus faced person with abilities of doublespeak. Anyway my tweet was aimed at INC. My erudite friend getting riled up shows a Freudian slip – if not a tilt,” tweeted Jakhar, who joined the BJP after quitting the Congress last year.

Tewari respond to Jakhar, saying, “Simple concepts like equity, fair play & impartiality when recommending a JPC probe are perhaps beyond feudal comprehension of my friend @sunilkjakhar not to talk of complex realities of financial markets & geo politics. Rest of his diatribe does not deserve dignity of a response.”

Musk calls past 3 months ‘tough’, says ‘had to save Twitter from bankruptcy’

    [ad_1]

Washington: Twitter and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said that the past three months have been “extremely tough” as he “had to save Twitter from bankruptcy” while also fulfilling his duties in Tesla and SpaceX. Taking to his official Twitter handle, Musk said that the microblogging site continues to have challenges.

Elon Musk tweeted, “Last 3 months were extremely tough, as had to save Twitter from bankruptcy, while fulfilling essential Tesla & SpaceX duties. Wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone.

Twitter still has challenges, but is now trending to breakeven if we keep at it. Public support is much appreciated!”. He tweeted in response to The Wall Street Journal’s news article.

Musk lamented the company’s “massive drop in revenue” just one week after closing the USD 44 billion deal to buy Twitter in October, which he attributed to “activist groups pressuring advertisers,” Fox Business reported. Since then, he has made a number of changes on Twitter, as per the news report.

Elon Musk has reduced about half of Twitter’s staff, introduced a revamped microblogging site Blue subscription service and even auctioned off memorabilia from the company’s San Francisco headquarters, Fox Business reported. He defended the Twitter layoffs in November, stressing that the company was losing USD 4 million a day.

Recently, Twitter announced that it will start charging a fee to access its API, which developers use to create third-party services, as per the news report. Earlier on January 13, Musk revealed some of the changes that were set to be introduced in the microblogging platform from next week onwards. He wrote, “Bookmark button moving to tweet details page, fixing image length crop & other minor bug fixes next week.”

Twitter to now share ad revenue with Blue users: Musk

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced that the micro-blogging platform will now share ad revenue with creators who are subscribed to “Twitter Blue Verified” for advertisements that appear in their reply threads.

In a tweet on Friday, Musk said: “Starting today, Twitter will share ad revenue with creators for ads that appear in their reply threads. To be eligible, the account must be a subscriber to Twitter Blue Verified.”

Several users expressed their thoughts on Musk’s post.

While one user asked, “what will the Twitter/Creator revenue split look like?”, another commented, “how is this going to look logistically? An ad monetization dashboard for creators?”

In December last year, Twitter had updated the list of features for its Blue service, which mentioned that subscribers of the service will get “prioritised rankings in conversations”.

The updated page also mentioned that subscribers can upload videos up to 60 minutes long from around the web at 1080p resolution and 2GB in file size, but also all videos must comply with the company’s rules.

  • Musk blows off Dems in first Capitol tour as Twitter CEO

Musk blows off Dems in first Capitol tour as Twitter CEO

    [ad_1]

    musk tesla tweet trial 25569

Twitter didn’t reply when asked why Musk didn’t schedule meetings with the minority party in the House.

Democrats, for their part, still want to hear from him, even as they don’t put much faith in their Republican colleagues to hold him accountable.

When it comes to Musk primarily meeting with conservatives, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said: “I think it’s seriously a mistake and I think it would be a good thing to have him come in and explain himself.”

She said she wants Musk to testify before her House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data and Commerce — although as the newly appointed ranking member she doesn’t set the agenda for that panel anymore.

Musk’s partisan trek through Congress stands in sharp contrast with many of his tech CEO brethren. Other D.C. regulars like Apple CEO Tim Cook purposely make their visits bipartisan, and while Musk is making inroads with the current party in power in the House, there are risks to taking sides so brazenly. For one, Democrats still control the Senate, and, of course, the political winds in Washington can turn on a dime, leaving allies on the outs and previously spurned lawmakers in positions of power.

But, at least this time around, the people who set the agenda in the House — members like Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), the House GOP no. 2, as well as Energy and Commerce Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), who’s panel has substantial jurisdiction over Twitter — were the recipients of Musk’s attention.

In that same meeting was Jordan (R-Ohio), who runs the Judiciary Committee and serves as a standard-bearer for Republicans in their ongoing war with the Biden administration, as well as Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.). Comer is bringing in former Twitter executives on Feb. 8 to testify about their handling of a news story about Hunter Biden’s laptop. Notably absent from that hearing agenda is Musk, who bought the company in October, and has since won Republican accolades for his “free-speech” approach to content moderation.

In fact, during the meeting Musk waived attorney-client privileges for some information that Comer had requested for his upcoming hearing, Comer said in an interview. “That was my only ask,” Comer said. One of the expected witnesses is Twitter’s former chief legal counsel Vijaya Gadde who Comer requested to testify about her decision to remove the New York Post’s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Accommodating the GOP is in keeping with Musk’s current political outlook. He endorsed the GOP ahead of the midterm elections, welcomed former President Donald Trump back to Twitter and obligingly dumped a series of “Twitter files” to make the case that Democrats and previous company executives colluded to restrain speech on the platform, along with several other conservative-friendly moves. In all, Musk has in recent months aligned himself with Republicans in ways that are relatively unusual for a tech billionaire — but could prove beneficial when it comes to potential GOP oversight, or lack thereof.

“It just shows the Elon approach to Washington. When you think of all these things that tech execs did to avoid the appearance of impropriety and then Musk blasts through this and is like, ‘I don’t care,’” said a former Twitter communications officer who also worked on the Hill and asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely. “That’s the type of stuff that is just a complete change. It’s just a huge departure from congressional norms.”

In his meeting with Republicans, they discussed the importance of the First Amendment, alleged censorship of conservatives and potential reforms to tech’s coveted liability shield known as Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, Jordan said in an interview.

It appears that Musk’s goodwill tour is already reaping rewards, with the House Energy and Commerce Committee announcing Monday that its first tech CEO hearing is focused not on Musk — but on TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew and the handling of U.S. data on the Chinese-owned app. And with Jordan passing over big-tech foe Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) to lead the Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel, there’s seemingly less GOP appetite for taking a shot at breaking up the big tech platforms this Congress.

“I don’t think there’s any question that the Republican leadership has made it very clear that they are going to protect big tech from any regulation or any effort to restore competition in the digital marketplace,” said Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), the antitrust subcommittee ranking member and the cosponsor of tech competition bills with Buck last Congress.

It’s not clear what leverage the snubbed Democrats have to hold a powerful exec to account, even if he persists in tweaking them on his platform.

“I am deeply concerned with how he’s running that company into the ground,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) when asked about Musk’s leadership of Twitter and time on the Hill. “It seems like a vanity project that is going wrong with an explosion of hate speech on that platform.”

Schiff then stepped into his Tesla sedan after a Monday night vote and drove off.

‘Adaniscam’ trends on Twitter, questions on deposits in LIC, SBI raised

    [ad_1]

Following the outbreak of the Hindenburg report on the Adani group, on Friday, the hashtags ‘Hindenburg Report’, ‘Hindenburg Research’, and ‘Adani scam’ trended on Twitter.

Several Twitter users including members of the opposition raised questions on the union government’s role in the development.

Along with the Adani Group share pummelling on Friday, with the group losing Rs 3.37 lakh crore in aggregate market capitalisation in a single day, Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), the single largest non-promoter domestic shareholder in five of the largest Adani Group companies by market capitalisation, lost Rs 16,627 crore due to a drop in the value of its Adani Group holdings.

The value of LIC’s Adani Group assets fell from Rs 72,193 crore on Tuesday to Rs 55,565 crore on Friday, a 22% drop in only two days.

Meanwhile, LIC’s share price declined 3.5 percent during the day on Friday, falling 5.3 percent in the prior two days.

By the time of publishing this story, #Adaniscam garnered 10.4k tweets and #HindenburgResearch garnered 4764 tweets.

    Reactions

Some of India’s top public sector banks stated their exposure to the Adani Group was within the limitations outlined by the Reserve Bank of India despite Friday’s steep decline in shares of group firms and the lenders that have exposure to it. The RBI permits a bank to expose no more than 25 percent of its eligible available capital base to any one group of related entities.

“There is nothing alarming about our Adani exposure and we don’t have any concerns as of now,” SBI chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara said speaking to Reuters.

Khara said the Adani Group hadn’t raised any funding from SBI in the recent past and that the bank would take a ‘prudent call’ on any funding request from them in the near future, reported Reuters.

SBI has reached out to the company for clarification and the board will take any decision on the bank’s exposure to the group only after that, reported Reuters quoting an unnamed official.

An official at the state-run Bank of India said the loans to the Adani group were within permissible limits.

“Our exposure to the Adani Group is below the large exposure framework of the Reserve Bank of India,” Reuters quoted an unnamed executive at the Bank of India as saying.

“Till last month, the Adani Group’s interest payment on loans has been intact.”

Bank executives at two other private lenders said that they were not yet in “panic mode” but being watchful, the report stated.

The LIC is still investing additional money in Adani’s flagship unit despite the fraud allegations. According to a document, the state-controlled life insurer is investing around $37 million as an anchor investor in Adani Enterprises Ltd.’s $2.5 billion new share sale. It would increase its present ownership of 4.23% with the investment.

Adani Power Ltd., Adani Green Energy Ltd., Adani Transmission Ltd., Adani Ports, and Special Economic Zone Ltd., and Adani Enterprises Ltd. make up the Adani Group.

    What is the Hindenburg report?

Hindenburg Research, a well-known short seller in the United States, disclosed short positions in the Adani Group on Wednesday, accusing the conglomerate of the improperly wide use of businesses established in offshore tax havens and expressing worry about excessive debt levels.

The revelation, which came just days before Adani Enterprises’ (ADEL.NS) $2.5 billion share sale, sent Adani group businesses’ shares tumbling.

It also said that seven Adani listed firms had an 85% downside on a fundamental basis because to what it dubbed ‘sky-high valuations’.

The firm published an investigative document titled ‘Adani Group: How The World’s 3rd Richest Man Is Pulling The Largest Con In Corporate History‘ and revealed findings of their two-year investigation presenting evidence that the Rs 17.8 trillion worth Adani group has engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

According to the report, Gautam Adani, the Adani Group’s founder, and chairman, has a net worth of about $120 billion, which he has increased by more than $100 billion in the last three years, primarily as a result of stock price growth in the group’s seven most important publicly traded companies, which have increased by an average of 819 percent during that time.

KT Rama Rao had also challenged the central investigative agencies including the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Income Tax Department (IT) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to probe into the Adani enterprise’s ‘scam’.

The challenge comes hours after US’s Hindenburg Research’s investigative document, alleging fraud in Adani Group’s dealings, surfaced.

The Adani Group has said that accounting (or fraud-type assertions) “investigation” by Hindenburg Research are devoid of facts.

Of Adani’s portfolio’s nine publicly listed entities, eight are audited by one of the Big 6.

On leverage or over-leverage issue — 100 of our various companies are rated (these account for nearly 100 percent of our EBITDA), Adani Enterprises said in a stock exchange filing.

On revenue or balance sheet being artificially inflated or managed — out of nine listed companies in Adani portfolio six are subject to specific sector regulatory review for revenue, costs, and capex, Adani Group said.

In relation to governance, four of our large companies are in the top 7 percent of the peer group in Emerging markets or the sector of the world.

On the LAS position do note that overall promoter leverage is less than 4 percent of promoter holding, the group said.

Hindenburg asked 89 questions in total, the following Question by number: 1,2,3 5,6,7 19,20,21, 27,28,29 62,63,64 and 72,74,75,77,78,79 are in relation to Related party transactions, DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) and court cases.

Twenty-one in total cannot be claimed to be the result of any investigation over a two-year period or any such assertion as they were disclosed in the public documents all the way back from 2015 onwards, the group said.

The 21 questions are nothing but Adani Portfolio’s own public disclosure from as far back as 2015, the statement said.

Twitter removes option to send direct message on Android, iOS

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Micro-blogging platform Twitter has removed the option to send a direct message to another account directly from a profile page on Android and iOS applications, many users reported.

The “DM” button, which usually appears next to the follow and notification buttons, has disappeared without any replacement, reported 9To5Google.

This seems to be the situation for all Twitter accounts and is probably just a small bug.

It is difficult to figure out whether this was done on purpose by the platform given the way the service is now run.

In the meantime, users can still send a direct message by looking up the desired account in the messages tab, the report said.

Last week, Twitter Boss Elon Musk had announced that a higher-priced subscription to the microblogging platform with no ads will be available in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Musk also announced that the upcoming update of the platform will make it less mandatory for users to use the “For You” algorithmic timeline.
