  • Guwahati twin murder: Motive is still not known, say police

Guwahati twin murder: Motive is still not known, say police

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: In the sensational twin murder case in Guwahati, where a woman has been charged with killing her husband and mother-in-law, chopping their bodies into multiple pieces, and later disposing of the body parts in some other place, the police said that the actual motive behind this gruesome crime is still not known.

The murders happened in July and August last year, but came to light only on Monday.

Diganta Barah, the Commissioner of Police, told reporters here, “The accused — Bandana Kalita — filed a missing complaint at the police station for her husband Amarjyoti Dey and mother Shankari Dey, allegedly after killing both of them. She even alleged that the police were not doing enough to trace the missing duo.”

Shankari Dey was a retired state government employee, and she used to live in the city’s Noonmati area while her son Amarjyoti Dey was living in Narengi.

“Nirmalya Dey, the nephew of Sankari Dey, had also filed an FIR in Novemnber last year at Noonmati police station suspecting probable kidnapping of her aunt. Unfortunately, the police could not find much clue in both the missing cases,” the officer said.

However, when Nirmalya Dey later approached the Assam CID, a special team was formed to investigate the whole incident. Meanwhile, the accused Kalita also went to the Police Commissioner’s office demanding a fresh probe.

The special team noted some anomalies in the statements of Nirmalya Dey and Bandana Kalita and initiated an interrogation of them.

“Though Bandana Kalita initially tried to mislead the police more than once, after two days of thorough interrogation, she broke down and confessed her crime,” Barah added.

Narrating the chain of events, the officer said that Kalita killed her husband and mother-in-law with the help with two of her close friends, Dhanki Deka and Arup Deka.

On July 26 last year, Kalita went to Shankari Dey’s house with Arup Deka, strangled the lady to death, and later beheaded her with a sharp machete. The body was later cut into three pieces.

In the meantime, her other associate, Dhanki Deka, was waiting outside the house with polythene bags. They packed the body parts in polythene bags, covered them with rugs, and drove to the Shillong-Cherapunjee Road in neighbouring Meghalaya in the wee hours of July 27 to dispose of the body parts and the murder weapon.

“On August 17, Kalita, Arup Deka, and Dhanki Deka went to Amarjit Dey’s house and hit him with a heavy rod. As Dey lay unconscious, his head was chopped off and his body was cut into five pieces. The next morning, the trio followed the earlier tactic and disposed of the body parts in a dense forest in Meghalaya’s Dawki area,” Barah said.

The senior police officer added that Dhanki Deka has been arrested from Tinsukia, while another accused, Arup Deka, was nabbed by the police in Guwahati.

“A special police team went with the accused persons to the place where Shankari Dey’s body was disposed of. Some of the body pieces could be recovered and efforts are on to retrieve Amarjit Dey’s body parts,” the officer said.

When Barah was asked about the motive behind the heinous crime, he said, “A lot of investigation needs to be carried out to reach a conclusion.”

  • Twin Earthquakes Kill 2600 People In Turkey, Syria

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: More than 2600 people were reported dead in a devastating earthquake that flattened most of Turkey’s Gaziantep area bordering Syria. The devastation is visible across Turkey’s 10 provinces and a vast belt in war-torn Syria.

Tensions in Kashmir families whose wards are studying in Turkey has mounted even though the Government of India is making efforts to reach the Indian students if any, in the disaster-hit areas. India said it was sending medical squads, search and rescue teams and relief material to assist Turkey’s response. Officials in India said they prepared 100 rescue workers with specially trained dogs to send to Turkey in the wake of the earthquake.

The destruction was the outcome of two massive earthquakes – the first one having a magnitude of 7.8, and hours later another one with 7.5 magnitudes. The winter is supposed to impact rescue operations as the toll is likely to go up many times more. It was raining when a major tremor hit the area.

The wee-hour earthquake led to the pancake collapse of a vast number of housing blocks, trapping people under the rubble. The rescue was on when the second one hit the same belt thus adding to the crisis. Some of the buildings that survived the first or both major jolts later collapsed like pack of cards. Some of these destructions were captured by people on their cell phones.

Turkey and parts of Syria fall in a high seismic zone. Given the magnitude of the earthquake, it is been seen as the second only to December 1939 earthquake that killed 39000 people.

“I have never felt anything like it in the 40 years I have lived,” BBC quoted Gaziantep resident Erdem saying. “We were shaken at least three times very strongly, like a baby in a crib.”

In certain areas the earthquake damaged the gas pipeline triggering fires. Turkey’s state-owned crude oil and natural gas corporation, BOTAS, the flow of natural gas to Gaziantep, Hatay and Kahramanmaras provinces, as well as nine nearby counties, was stopped as a result of damage to the Kahramanmaras-Gaziantep transmission line.

“I barely got myself and my family out of the building. We were just coming out of the wreckage when we saw a person reach out through a small gap,” Veysel Şervan told BBC. “The building collapsed on our friend who tried to save them. They have no chance of escape, it collapsed on them completely. We are in a very difficult situation.”

The earthquake reduced Gaziantep castle and the Shirvan Mosque to rubble.  The castle was over 2000 years old and belonged to the Roman period. Built by the Romans during the second and third centuries, the castle was strengthened and expanded by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I in the sixth century. Later the Ayyubids in the twelfth and thirteen centuries improved it. It was a museum.

Turkish official news gatherer, Anadolu Agency reported the earthquake — felt as far away as Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt — occurred in Kahramanmaras province, north of Gaziantep, near the Syrian border. It devastated the southern Turkey and northern and central Syria. Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay, and Kilis provinces are heavily affected by the quake.

Given the fact that the winters and the collapse of public communication systems have been seriously impacted, the survivors have uploaded hundreds of photographs and visuals explaining the devastation. A number of global media houses have used these motion photographs to detail the tragedy for larger audiences.

Latest reports suggest that a tsunami has hit the Turkish shores and it is adding to the costs.

Narwal Twin Blasts: Police Officer Booked For Renting Out House To LeT Militant

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered an FIR against a police sub-inspector at whose house Mohammad Arif Sheikh, a serving government school teacher-turned-LeT militant, was allegedly living as a tenant. The house is located in Sunjawan’s Peerbagh Colony on the outskirts of Jammu city, reported The Indian Express.

Posted in Kashmir Valley, police sub-inspector Mohammad Haneef has been booked on charges of not verifying Arif Sheikh’s antecedents with the local police, newspaper The Indian Express quoted a senior police officer as having said, adding that the FIR against Haneef has been registered under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

The police had on Thursday said that they arrested Arif Sheikh, a school teacher posted in Government Middle School at Phagilla in Reasi district’s Mahore tehsil, for planting two IEDs in the Narwal area of Jammu city which injured nine people on January 21. A “perfume IED” seized from him – an explosive packed inside a perfume bottle, set up to explode when the nozzle is pressed or the lid turned – was the first such device seized by the J&K Police in three decades of militancy.

The provision under which PSI Haneef has been booked provides for punishment to a person who disobeys an order duly promulgated by a public servant, saying that if the disobedience causes or tends to cause danger to human life, health or safety, or causes or tends to cause a riot of affray, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine up to Rs 1,000 or both.

The police in Jammu and Kashmir have from time to time been asking people to submit information about tenants, if any, living in their houses for verification of their antecedents. In Jammu district, the police have conducted such verification for 25,000 tenants and their family members in the past one month, a senior police officer said.

Arif Sheikh owed allegiance to the Lashkar-e-Toiba, the report quoted the police as having said, adding that he has also confessed to his involvement in IED explosions in Jammu’s Shastri Nagar area in February 2022 and in a passenger bus near Katra on May 13 last year. While there was no casualty in the Shastri Nagar blast, four people were killed and over 20 injured in explosions inside a passenger bus near Katra.

  • Twin blasts leave nine injured in Jammu two days ahead of Rahul-led Yatra’s arrival

Twin blasts leave nine injured in Jammu two days ahead of Rahul-led Yatra’s arrival

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Just two days before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra is scheduled to reach Jammu, two back-to-back explosions rocked a busy locality on the outskirts of the city on Saturday, leaving nine people injured, officials said.

Police suspect that IEDs were used to carry out the twin explosions in an SUV parked in a repair shop and in a vehicle at a nearby junkyard at Transport Nagar area of Narwal.

The terror attack comes at a time when security agencies in the region are on high alert in the wake of the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Congress and the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the incident and directed agencies to take urgent steps to nab the culprits .

“A blast occurred in an old, parked Bolero (Sports Utility Vehicle) around 11 am resulting in injuries to five people who were standing nearby. They were evacuated to hospital and their condition is stable,” Additional Director General of Police, Mukesh Singh told reporters near the scene of the explosion.

He said the whole area was immediately cleared of the people but in the meantime another blast occurred 50 metres away, causing minor injuries to one more person who was also shifted to hospital.

“Further investigation is on,” the officer said.

However, a total of nine persons were brought with splinter injuries to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital following the blasts.

“We have received nine patients with one having abdominal injuries and two others fractured legs. The condition of all of them is stable,” a doctor at the hospital said.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra entered J-K’s Kathua district on Thursday evening via Punjab and is camping in Chadwal, about 70 km from here. After a day’s break on Saturday, the yatra, which commenced from Kanyakumari on September 7, is scheduled to resume from Hiranagar on Sunday and reach Jammu on January 23.

An official identified the injured as Suhail Iqbal, Vishav Partap, Vinod Kumar, Arjun Kumar, Amit Kumar, Rajesh Kumar and Aneesh all residents of Jammu – and Sushil Kumar of Doda.

Early this month, two cousins – aged four and 16 – were killed when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in Dangri village in Jammu’s Rajouri area, 14 hours after terrorists had shot dead four people there.

The terrorists, locals had claimed, had planted the IED on the day of the shooting and it was missed during the scanning by police and security officials who had cordoned off the area.

The officials on Saturday said the whole area was cordoned off by joint teams of police and CRPF immediately after the first explosion which was followed by another blast 15 minutes later.

A thorough sanitisation operation was carried out and forensic experts, bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs were also pressed into service to look for clues, they said.

Jaswinder Singh, an eyewitness, said the first blast occurred in a vehicle that was at a workshop for repair.

About 15 minutes later, another explosion took place in the area littered with damaged parts and garbage, said Singh, president of the Motor Spare Parts Association.

Raj Kumar said he was working on another vehicle when the blast ripped apart another parked vehicle.

“We initially thought that the petrol tank of some vehicle exploded but the blast was so powerful that it blew up the vehicle,” he said.

An official spokesman said senior police officials have briefed the Lt Governor.

“Such dastardly acts highlight the desperation and cowardice of those responsible. Take immediate and firm action. No efforts should be spared to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the Lt Governor said.

Sinha also announced assistance of Rs 50,000 to the injured. The Lt Governor said that the administration would ensure the best possible treatment and extend every help required by the families.

Congress MP and AICC incharge of Jammu and Kashmir Rajani Patil strongly condemned the twin blasts. The CPI and AAP alleged that the incident reflected the “failure” of the BJP’s policy in the Union Territory.

“Jammu blasts reveal once again the failure of BJP’s J-K Policy. Abrogation of Art.370 and demonetisation adventures misfired.Terrorism is on the increase,” CPI MP Binoy Viswam said on Twitter.

The BJP’s policy of “communal hatred has badly affected the country’s unity,” he alleged.

“The day the BJP government took over, the situation in J-K is getting from bad to worse. Terrorism is increasing with each passing day and is returning to 1990s,” chairman of Jammu and Kashmir AAP state coordination committee Harsh Dev Singh alleged.

“They were stating that not a bird was killed after the abrogation of Article 370 but the reality is that innocent men, women and children are getting killed. The BJP has to give answers not only to J-K but to the entire nation,” he told reporters.
