Case on Mohammed Zubair’s tweets: HC pulls Delhi police over inaction on abusive user

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the police if it has taken any action against a Twitter user who had allegedly abused fact-checker and Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair on the platform.

A single-judge bench of Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani was hearing a plea by Zubair challenging an FIR registered against him for a tweet by him in response to an abusive message with username Jagdish Singh.

The police had booked the petitioner and to quash the case, the latter moved the High Court.

The judge noted that the police has not named the petitioner in the charge sheet because it did not find any criminality against him, and asked if they have taken the case to a logical end.

“What did you do about this gentleman called Jagdish Singh. My question is if you found nothing against this man (Zubair), what did you do about the person who put out those offensive tweets,” he asked.

The case stems from an incident which took place in 2020, wherein the petitioner had called out Singh through his tweet for being a troll.

Zubair had retweeted his display picture, which featured his daughter but after pixelating/ blurring her image.

The tweet read: “Hello Jagdish Singh. Does your cute grand daughter know about your part time job of abusing people on social media? I suggest you to change your profile pic.”

This was followed by two FIRs against Zubair a month later in Delhi and Raipur.

They were filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) for allegedly “threatening and torturing” a minor girl on Twitter.

The court said: “Somebody (Jagdish Singh) starts a storm and you (Delhi Police) just say this person’s (Zubair’s) name is not in charge sheet therefore… I want to see if things are coming to a logical closure.”

It listed the matter for the next hearing on March 13 due to unavailability of advocate Nandita Rao who was appearing for the Delhi Police.

The court also asked Zubair’s counsel to inform the court about the status in the FIR registered against him in Chhattisgarh.

  • ‘Was genuinely confused’ tweets Khera over PM Modi-Gautam Adani name-mix up

‘Was genuinely confused’ tweets Khera over PM Modi-Gautam Adani name-mix up

    [ad_1]

Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera in a press meeting on February 17 addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as ‘Gautam Das Modi’. He later tweeted about the incident calling it a ‘genuine confusion’.

A video of Khera addressing the PM on his silence over the Adani-Hindenburg issue has gone viral. #GautamDasModi was trending on top at the time of writing this article.

“Why are you running away from a debate in Parliament? Why are you scared of JPC (Joint Parliament Committee)? Even PV Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee set up JPC during their stints as prime ministers. What problem does Narendra ‘Gautam Das’, ‘Damodadar Das’ have with JPC? It is Damodardas right,” Khera looks at his colleague.

When people corrected him, he pauses and quips, “His name is Damodardas but deeds are of ‘Gautam Das’” leading to laughter in the press room.

Later, Khera tweeted stating it was a genuine mistake. “I genuinely got confused whether it is Damodardas or Gautam Das….” he tweeted.

The BJP is not happy with Khera’s remarks. On Monday, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya said that PM Modi is always targeted for his humble origins.

Reacting to the incident, Union home minister Amit Shah on Monday, at a poll rally in Nagaland, said, “Congress is definitely going to get extinct this time.”

“The language used by a Congress spokesperson for PM Modi is not his statement, but a statement that’s in accordance with Rahul Gandhi’s nature. Rahul Gandhi used abusive language for PM Modi in 2019 and as a result Congress lost its Opposition status,” Shah said.

    FIR registered against Khera

Latest reports suggest that BJP leader Mukesh Sharma has lodged an FIR against the senior Congress leader for “making unsavory remarks against the father of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. The FIR has been registered at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Ever since the video went viral, #GautamDasModi has been trending on Twitter with 4,732 tweets when this article was written. Many have lauded Khera’s remarks.

  • Elon Musk reportedly forced Twitter algorithm to boost his tweets after Super Bowl flop

Elon Musk reportedly forced Twitter algorithm to boost his tweets after Super Bowl flop

    [ad_1]

Twitter chief executive Elon Musk rallied a team of roughly 80 engineers to reconfigure the platform’s algorithm so his tweets would be more widely viewed, tech news site Platformer has reported.

A disgruntled Musk called for an emergency effort after a tweet he sent during Sunday’s Super Bowl game failed to achieve as much engagement as a tweet from Joe Biden, interviews and internal documents reviewed by Platformer have revealed.

The effort was sparked when a tweet from the president, who has 37m followers, generated nearly 29m impressions while a similar tweet from Musk – who has 128m followers – generated little more than 9.1m impressions.

A Twitter employee and cousin of Elon Musk, James Musk, posted urgently in the company Slack at 2.30am the following Monday morning, asking all employees who can code to participate. “Any people who can make dashboards and write software please can you help solve this problem,” he wrote. “This is high urgency.”

Engineers then deployed a new algorithm that artificially inflated Musk’s tweets by a factor of 1,000, ensuring that more than 90% of Musk’s 128.9m followers see them. Many who do not follow Musk are also being served his tweets in their feed through the “For you” tab of the app’s home page, which curates tweets from a number of accounts, including those a user is not following.

Musk seemed to publicly confirm the move, in his own way, posting a meme about forcing followers to read his tweets. He also told followers to “stay tuned” while Twitter makes adjustments to the algorithm.

The decision to devote internal resources to promoting his own tweets comes amid ongoing reports about Musk’s obsession with his own impressions on the platform. Last week, a report from Platformer also revealed Musk had fired a principal engineer at Twitter who told him views on his tweets had decreased organically, with interest in the erratic CEO waning. Users have complained since Twitter made its “For you” page the default feed on the platform in January that Musk’s tweets were appearing more frequently.

Musk, who purchased Twitter in October 2022 for $44bn, has made a number of additional changes to the platform in the intervening months, allowing the return of previously banned accounts like that of Donald Trump, changing the process for Twitter verification, and revoking free access to the platform’s API, or application programming interface.

Amid ongoing criticisms of his decisions as chief executive, Musk has promised to step down and find a replacement as soon as later this year. Current employees have described a harrowing environment at the company, which laid off nearly half its workforce in November 2022. At the time, Musk defended the cuts and other cost-cutting measures, stating the company was losing $4m per day.

  • Saudi increases prison sentence of US citizen to 19 years for tweets

Saudi increases prison sentence of US citizen to 19 years for tweets

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia court has increased the sentenced of Saad Ibrahim Almadi, who holds both Saudi and American nationalities, to 19 years in prison, local media reported.

72-year-old Saad Ibrahim Almadi, retired project manager living in Florida, was arrested in November 2021, while visiting family in the kingdom and was sentenced in October 2022 to 16 years.

Saudi court convicted him of attempting to destabilize the kingdom and supporting terrorism.

As per media reports, Saad Almadi had been detained over 14 tweets posted on Twitter over the past seven years, mostly criticizing government policies and accusing them of corruption. He was also banned from traveling for 16 years.

As per New York Post, the US State Department informed Ibrahim Almadi of the new Saudi punishment, on Wednesday, February 8, months after the White House publicly condemned the mistreatment of his father, Saad Almadi.

Ibrahim, criticized the handling of his father’s case after the US State Department told him that his father would spend a longer period in prison.

He told The New York Post, ‘It’s not a slap in the face, it’s a middle finger. When the US asked for an appeal, they said: “Here you go, 19 years!”‘

This appears to be the latest in a series of recent cases in which Saudis have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for social media posts critical of the government.

    Wave of arrests

Since Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS, became the Saudi crown prince in June 2017, dozens of imams, women’s rights activists and members of the ruling royal family have been detained.

In August 2022, Saudi court sentenced a woman Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani to 45 years in prison for using Twitter to express her opinions.

This conviction of Nourah Al-Qahtani comes less than a month after another Saudi woman, Salma al-Shehab, was sentenced to 34 years in prison and given a further 34-year travel ban for following and retweeting activists on Twitter.

Similarly, in August 2022, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Courts of Appeal sentenced a prominent former imam and preacher at the Grand Mosque in Makkah Sheikh Saleh Al Talib to ten years in prison.

Among those arrested are prominent Islamic preachers Salman al-Awdah, Awad al-Qarni, Farhan al-Malki, Mostafa Hassan and Safar al-Hawali.

Mocking New Verification Process, Fake Verified Twitter Profiles Of George W Bush, Tony Blair Tweeted Controversial Tweets

    [ad_1]

Verified Twitter accounts with blue check marks bearing the profile names of former President George W. Bush and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair reminisced about the Iraq War on Wednesday.

A tweet screenshot that is viral on Twitter shows George W. Bush tweeting, “I miss killing Iraqis,” while Tony Blair quotes him and writes, “Same tbh.” But the Twitter accounts are not actually managed by Bush and Blair and are fake, according to reports.

After Twitter changed its verification process and eligibility, now everyone can get the blue checkmark after paying monthly fees as a subscription to Twitter Blue. This change is criticised by the majority of people across the world.

To mock the change in verification, two anonymous accounts that used the names of George W. Bush and Tony Blair tweeted the controversial tweet, the reports say.

In contrast, it was one or more anonymous users who were mocking the upgraded verification process introduced by Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, and who charge $8 per month. They created user identities that resembled those of Bush and Blair before enrolling in the premium system to obtain the blue check mark.

Their conversation might have appeared genuine to a casual observer.

As later explained by the fake Bush profile:

    Twitter screenshot

“Y’all are missing the point about the $8. “It’s a small price to make this app completely unusable, and I’m assuming he is going to quickly learn we can get refunds from the credit cards we used if he suspends us prior to a month.”

Critics fear that the new verification process will make it simpler to impersonate others and facilitate the spreading of false information, especially in the case of public figures who choose not to pay the monthly charge.

Musk has vowed to suspend profiles that impersonate others.

Within hours following the posts, Twitter deleted both fake accounts.
