I apologize, was driven by selfishness: Cong’s Pawan Khera on his 2022 ‘tapasya’ tweet

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday apologized for his ‘tapasya’ tweet after not getting a Rajya Sabha nomination from his party last year, saying he did so in “selfishness” but has realized his mistake drawing inspiration from Rahul Gandhi who “shuns power” and continues his ‘tapasya’.

Addressing a gathering at the day-long ‘Sankalp Satyagraha’ of the Congress at the Rajghat to protest Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha, Khera said, “If you try to murder democracy, Rahul Gandhi will speak, be it from inside Parliament or outside it.”

“You (BJP) are afraid when Rahul Gandhi takes the name of Adani, you will shiver when he will do so on the streets,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi belongs to the family that showed the country the way, Khera said.

Referring to his tweet on May 29 last year after his name did not figure in a list of party’s Rajya Sabha nominees, Khera said, “I want to apologize to all of you, to my leadership that in selfishness, when I did not get a Rajya Sabha berth, I wrote that ‘shayad meri tapasya mein kuch kami reh gayi’. Now I see Rahul Gandhi that he shuns power and still continues his tapasya, what could be bigger than that.”

“I apologize to all of you today. I have got inspiration from Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. It is time to fight, to raise one’s voice, power comes or doesn’t, we will fight and win,” Khera told the gathering with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders on the dais.

Khera was at the centre of a deplaning row recently when he was arrested after being deplaned from an aircraft and arrested for remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “why all thieves have Modi surname” remark. He was subsequently disqualified from Lok Sabha.

Raking up old tweet of mine shows Congress’s desperation: Khushbu

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Launching an all-out attack against the Congress party after an old tweet of hers on the name ‘Modi’ went viral today, actor and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar said it exposed how desperate the opposition party was.

The 2018 tweet of the National Commission for Women (NCW) member has gone viral and she has not deleted the post.

“Not only does it show how desperate they (Congress party) are, but it exposes their level of ignorance on the issue they are raking up,” she told PTI.

Sundar, also BJP national executive committee member who had quit the Congress party and joined the saffron organisation in 2020 posted a tweet in 2018 saying “…Let’s change the meaning of #Modi to corruption..suits better.”

In the wake of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification over his equating the surname Modi to “thieves” the party was quick to pick on Khushbu’s old tweet.

Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi via a Twitter post on Saturday morning, “will you make one of your disciples named Modi file a defamation case against Khushbu Sundar too?”

“I have never deleted any of the tweets on my timeline and I will not do so now,” Sundar said.

She asked “what are the Congress leaders trying to do by picking on me? Are they equating me to Rahul Gandhi?”

Explaining her 2018 tweet, Khushbu said “I was in Congress party then and I was only performing my duty as the spokesperson of the Congress. This is the language we were supposed to speak and that is exactly what I was doing. I was following the party leader. This is his language.”

Asked if she saw nothing wrong in insulting the ‘Modi’ surname, she said, “Rahul Gandhi has stooped down to the level of calling all Modis as thieves, I have only used the term ‘Corruption’. The Congress party is incapable of seeing the difference. But if they have the guts, I challenge the Congress leaders to file a case against me and I will face them legally.”

Sundar also pointed out that the Congress Party never liked her appreciating the positive steps taken by the ruling BJP. “Whether it was the Triple Talaq, Abrogation of Article 370, or the launch of the New Education Policy (NEP), the Congress party always had a problem when I tweeted appreciation,” she recalled.

An actor who has acted in over 100 films, Khushbu Sundar initially joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and then switched over to the Congress party before joining the BJP.

  • Karnataka: Actor Chetan Ahimsa arrested for ‘Hindutva is built on lies’ tweet

Karnataka: Actor Chetan Ahimsa arrested for ‘Hindutva is built on lies’ tweet

    [ad_1]

Kannada actor Chetan Ahimsa was arrested in Bengaluru on Tuesday on charges of hurting Hindu sentiments via his latest tweet that said, “Hindutva is built on lies”.

He was arrested this morning by the Sheshadripuram police and produced before the district court.

On Monday, he tweeted and shared, “Hindutva is built on LIES Savarkar: Indian ‘nation’ began when Rama defeated Ravana & returned to Ayodhya —> a lie 1992: Babri Masjid is ‘birthplace of Rama’ —> a lie 2023: Urigowda-Nanjegowda are ‘killers’ of Tipu—> a lie Hindutva can be defeated by TRUTH—> truth is EQUALITY”

Soon after, a complaint was registered against the actor and he was arrested.

The 39-year-old actor is also a Dalit and tribal activist.

In the past, he has found himself in the bad books of far-right Hindutva elements by posting statements on social media that do not cater to the latter’s ideology.

On February 23, 2022, the actor was arrested for his alleged comments against Karnataka High Court judge Justice Krishna Dixit. Dixit was a part of the bench that upheld the Bommai government’s decision to ban the hijab from government educational institutions.

On February 16, 2022, Chetan re-tweeted one of his old tweets about Dixit who had granted pre-arrest bail to an alleged rape accused.

He said, “This week KA (Karnataka) High Court Justice Krishna Dixit grantd (granted) pre-arrest bail to rape-accused Rakesh B claiming ‘it is unbecoming of Indian woman to sleep after rape; that is not way women react when they are ravished.’ What’s ‘unbecoming’ is 21st c (century) misogyny of this judiciary Dixit fossil.”

On October 23, 2022, an FIR was lodged against him for calling out the hit movie Kantara’s director/actor Rishab Shetty for speaking wrong information regarding ‘Bhoota Kola’, a tradition depicted in the movie.

Shetty, in an interview, had termed ‘Boota Kala‘ as a part of Hindu culture. “The gods in Kantara are all part of our tradition and it is indeed a part of Hindu culture and rituals. Because I am a Hindu, I have belief and respect for my religion. What we have said is through the element that is present in Hindu dharma,” Shetty stated in an interview.

In response, Chetan tweeted that though he was glad that a Kannada movie is being a major hit nationwide, Shetty was wrong about ‘Boota Kola’ being a part of Hindu culture.

Chetan tweeted, “Glad our Kannada film ‘Kantara’ is making waves on a national level. Director Rishabh Shetty claims Bhoota Kola is ‘Hindu culture’. False. Our Pambada/Nalike/Parawa’s Bahujan traditions predate Vedic-Brahminical Hinduism. We ask that Moolnivasi cultures be shown w/truth on & off screen.”

The tweet enraged many Hindutva leaders who trolled the actor mercilessly, and Chetan had to call a press conference to make his statements clear.

“It is wrong to say that ‘Bhoota Kola’ is part of the Hindu religion. Adivasis practice the ritual and there is no ‘Brahminism’ in Bhoota Kola. Don’t say Hindu in the movie. It is the culture of the Adivasis. It is unfair to put Adivasi culture in the column of Hindu religion,” he told reporters.

Modi responds to Bommai’s tweet on Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday responded to a tweet on a drone shot posted on Twitter by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai of the new Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway with the high-speed train Vande Bharat Express passing underneath a road over bridge section of the 10-lane expressway.

“What a view! 10-lane Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway alongside Vande Bharat Express, a visual depicting the story of world-class infrastructure and unprecedented growth in Karnataka. Under PM Narendra Modi, our double engine government is working wonders in the state,” Bommai wrote while posting a video clip on his Twitter handle on Friday.

On Saturday, re-tweeting the Karnataka Chief Minister’s tweet, PM Modi said: “Our people deserve the best possible infrastructure, which our government will always work hard to provide. Our strides in infra creation have been widely lauded.”

The work on the Expressway project started in two phases around three years ago — in May 2019, and December 2019. However, due to Covid-induced constraints, little progress could be made.

The expressway is expected to be inaugurated and opened in March 2023. This project under Bharatmala Pariyojana (BMP) had a prior deadline of October 2022.

The Rs 8,000-crore project is expected to bring down the travel time between some key Karnataka cities from 3 hours to 90 minutes and less.

  • Congress asks if Adani’s business model is 100% ethical, retweets Rahul’s old tweet

Congress asks if Adani’s business model is 100% ethical, retweets Rahul’s old tweet

    [ad_1]

In light of the revelations of the Hindenburg report, the Congress party on Saturday retweeted party MP Rahul Gandhi’s old tweet from 2020 and said that the country has the right to know what Gautam Adani’s business model is like and if it is 100 percent ethical.

“Do you remember this tweet? Now, the important question is, how has he managed to multiply his wealth over the years? What is his business model? Is it 100% ethical? India has the right to know,” the grand old party asked.

Back in 2020, when Adani beat Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in the list of the wealthiest people in the world amassing 16.2 billion dollars to his net worth, Rahul had asked people if their wealth has increased in 2020.

“How much did your wealth increase in 2020? Zero. You struggle to survive while he makes Rs 12 Lakh Cr and increases his wealth by 50%. Can you tell me why?” he asked.

    What is Hindenburg’s report?

Hindenburg Research, a well-known short seller in the United States, disclosed short positions in the Adani Group on Wednesday, accusing the conglomerate of the improperly wide use of businesses established in offshore tax havens and expressing worry about excessive debt levels.

The revelation, which comes just days before Adani Enterprises’ (ADEL.NS) $2.5 billion share sale, sent Adani group businesses’ shares tumbling.

It also said that seven Adani listed firms had an 85% downside on a fundamental basis because to what it dubbed ‘sky-high valuations’.

Hindenburg stated key listed firms in the group headed by billionaire Gautam Adani have ‘significant debt’ which had put the entire company on a ‘precarious financial footing’.

The firm published an investigative document titled ‘Adani Group: How The World’s 3rd Richest Man Is Pulling The Largest Con In Corporate History‘ and revealed findings of their two-year investigation presenting evidence that the Rs 17.8 trillion worth Adani group has engaged in a brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

According to the report, Gautam Adani, the Adani Group’s founder and chairman, has a net worth of about $120 billion, which he has increased by more than $100 billion in the last three years, primarily as a result of stock price growth in the group’s seven most important publicly traded companies, which have increased by an average of 819 percent during that time.

Adani has frequently downplayed worries about debt. Adani’s Chief Financial Officer Jugeshinder Singh told the media on January 21 that “Nobody has raised debt concerns to us. No single investor has.”

“Even if you ignore the findings of our investigation and take the financials of Adani Group at face value, its seven key listed companies have 85% downside purely on a fundamental basis owing to sky-high valuations,” said Hindenburg Research in its report.

The key listed Adani firms have also accrued enormous debt, most notably by pledging shares of their inflated stock as security for loans, putting the group’s entire financial status in jeopardy.

According to reports, the Adani Group has been the focus of four big government fraud investigations totaling US$ 17 billion, including charges of money laundering, tax evasion, and corruption.

In its report, Hindenburg Research said that the Adani family members allegedly cooperated to create offshore shell entities in tax-haven jurisdictions like Mauritius, the UAE, and Caribbean Islands, generating forged import/export documentation in an apparent effort to generate fake or illegitimate turnover and siphon money from the listed companies.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid row over the BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question”, an old tweet from the Twitter handle narendramodi_in went viral on social media.

In the tweet, it was written, “Till there was DD, Akashvani, what did common people discuss- we heard it on BBC…there was no faith in DD, Akashvani: @narendramodi”.

Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair shares tweet

Sharing the tweet, Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair tweeted, ‘National TV vs I̶n̶t̶e̶r̶(Anti)National. Ekdum se Paper badal diye Channel badal diye TV badal di.’

The same tweet was also retweeted by AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Chairman of Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation Y Sathish Reddy.

    What is BBC documentary row?

UK’s BBC aired a documentary attacking PM Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister during the Gujarat riots of 2002. The documentary sparked outrage and was removed from select platforms.

The outline summary of the series says that it’s “A look at tensions between Indian PM Narendra Modi and India’s Muslim minority, investigating claims about his role in the 2002 riots that left over a thousand dead”.

Amid controversy, India has dismissed it as a “propaganda piece”, saying it is designed to push a particular “discredited narrative” and that the continuing colonial mindset is “blatantly visible” in the series.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also wondered about the purpose of the documentary and the “agenda” behind it and said “frankly we do not wish to dignify such efforts”.

    BBC defends Modi documentary

Later, BBC defended its controversial series as a “rigorously researched” documentary that sought to highlight important issues.

“The documentary was rigorously researched according to the highest editorial standards,” a BBC spokesperson said in a statement.

  • Musk tells Tesla trial: ‘Just because I tweet doesn’t mean people believe it’

Musk tells Tesla trial: ‘Just because I tweet doesn’t mean people believe it’

    [ad_1]

Elon Musk testified on Friday as part of a trial over a 2018 tweet in which he claimed to have “funding secured” to take Tesla private, a tweet that shareholders allege cost them millions in trading losses.

The Tesla CEO appeared in a San Francisco federal courtroom and defended himself by saying that “just because I tweet something does not mean people believe it or will act accordingly”.

Musk’s testimony began with questions about his use of Twitter, the social media platform he bought in October. He called it the most democratic way to communicate but said his tweets did not always affect Tesla stock the way he expected.

The class-action trial in San Francisco federal court centers on allegations that the Tesla CEO lied when he sent the tweet, costing investors. Earlier on Friday morning, investor Timothy Fries told the jury how he lost $5,000 buying Tesla stock after Musk sent the tweet at the center of the lawsuit.

The case is a rare securities class-action trial and the plaintiffs have already cleared high legal hurdles, with the US judge Edward Chen ruling last year that Musk’s post was untruthful and reckless.

Fries told the jury that funding secured meant to him that “there had been some vetting, some critical review of those funding sources”.

Musk, wearing a dark suit over a white button-down shirt, testified for less than 30 minutes before court adjourned until Monday. He spoke softly and in a sometimes bemused manner, a contrast to his occasional combative testimony in past trials.

Musk described the difficulties the company went through around the time he sent the “funding secured” tweet, including bets by short-sellers that the stock would fall.

“A bunch of sharks on Wall Street wanted Tesla to die, very badly,” he said, describing short-sellers, who profit when a stock falls in price.

Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro, told the jury in his opening statement on Wednesday that Musk believed he had financing from Saudi backers and was taking steps to make the deal happen. Fearing leaks to the media, Musk tried to protect the “everyday shareholder” by sending the tweet, which contained “technical inaccuracies”, Spiro said.

Guhan Subramanian, a Harvard Law School professor, told the jury that Musk’s behavior in 2018 lacked the hallmarks of traditional corporate dealmaking by tweeting his interest in Tesla without proper financial or legal analysis.

“Compared to the standard template it’s an extreme outlier,” said Subramanian, who called Musk’s approach “unprecedented” and “incoherent”.

A jury of nine will decide whether the tweet artificially inflated Tesla’s share price by playing up the status of funding for the deal, and if so, by how much.

The defendants include current and former Tesla directors, whom Spiro said had “pure” motives in their response to Musk’s plan.
