Karnataka Assembly polls: 8.26% voter turnout recorded after first round

Bengaluru: Karnataka recorded an average 8.26 per cent voter turnout till 9 a.m. after completion of the first round of voting which is underway on Wednesday to elect the 224-member state Assembly.

saw 11.5 per cent voting.
The people in communally-sensitive coastal and hilly districts have come out in large numbers to exercise their right to franchise.

In Kodagu district, Virajpet recorded 12.93 per cent polling and Madikeri 10.99 per cent.
Dakshina Kannada district which witnessed revenge killings and communal tension also saw a large number of voters turning out to polling booths. Sullia recorded 10.76 per cent turnout, Puttur 13.33 per cent, Bantwal 11.24 per cent, Mangalore 15.8 per cent polling.
Mangalore City South saw 11.95 per cent polling, Mangalore City North 12.32 per cent, Moodabidri 12.66 per cent, Belthangady 12.01 per cent polling.
In Udupi district, Karkal recorded 14.61 per cent turnout, Kapu 13.82 per cent, Udupi 13.45 per cent, Kundapura 14.17 per cent and Byndoor 10.81 per cent turnout.
Gauribidanur constituency in Chikkaballapur district saw 17.54 per cent of voting.

Shivamogga constituency where a Bajrang Dal activist Harsha was allegedly murdered and serious stabbing incidents occurred registered 10.02 per cent of voting.
Shiggaon seat from where Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is contesting recorded 6.72 per cent voting. Hubballi-Dharwad Central seat from where former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar is contesting as Congress candidate recorded 10.07 per cent of voting.
The counting of the votes is scheduled on May 13.

High voter turnout expected in Karnataka Assembly polls

Bengaluru: As voting for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly in currently underway, large queues were witnessed outside polling centres across the state on Wednesday indicating a huge voter turnout in the closely-fought contest.
People started lining up outside the centres well before polling began at 7 a.m.
The centres were abuzz with voters and staff were seen busy in coordinating the balloting process.

As of now, no untoward incidents have been reported from anywhere in the state.
People from all walks of life have come out of their homes to exercise their franchise.
Meanwhile, top political leaders of the state have also voted along with their family members.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who is contesting from the Shiggaon constituency in the Haveri district, offered prayers with his family at Anjaneya (Hanuman) temple in Ashok Nagar before casting his vote.
Minister for Higher Education, IT and BT Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan voted in Malleshwaram with his family members.

Minister for Health Dr. K. Sudhakar exercised his franchise at Chikkaballapur. He came to the polling station with his father and wife.
Home Minister Araga Jnanendra arrived with his wife and daughter and cast his vote in Thirthahalli of Shivamogga district.
Minister for Muzrai, Hajj and Wakf Shashikala Jolle and her husband MP from Chikkodi parliamentary seat Annasaheb Jolle have cast their votes at the Yaksamba town in Belagavi district.
Their daughter Priya Jolle and son Basavaprasada Jolle also exercised their franchise.
Voting will end at 6 p.m.

Republicans are winning more Latino votes. But rising turnout still benefits Dems.

Despite having a Latina candidate in the race in Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Democrats’ Senate overall vote share in Nevada fell to 62 percent among Latinos, compared to fellow Sen. Jacky Rosen’s 67 percent among the demographic in 2018, according to exit polls.
And in Arizona, the ratio for Democratic Senate hopefuls fell even more dramatically. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema enjoyed a 70 percent victory over her Republican opponent in 2018 among Latinos, while incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly fought for his 58 percent from the same demographic. Biden won about 61 percent of the Latino vote in 2020 in both states.
Yet Latino voters still boosted Cortez Masto, Kelly and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs enough to victory over their Republican counterparts, who took larger shares of white voters who make up the voting majority — bridging gaps as high as the 18-point deficit between Cortez Masto and Adam Laxalt among white voters.
Voto Latino conducted the analysis because of the large impact the two states had in the midterms. By analyzing precinct data, the organization’s projections show even modest increases of Latino turnout by 2.5 or 5 percentage points would net a fraction of a percentage for Democrats in a two-way race — boosting someone like Cortez Masto’s vote shares that much more, in a race that ultimately saw her and Republican Adam Laxalt separated by less than 1 point.
Voto Latino president María Teresa Kumar said she was unsurprised by the results, adding that even a little more investment would have avoided such a “close contest.”
“The reason we did this analysis was, had there been some investment based on historical participation of the Latino community of the last several years, wiser decisions would have been made,” Kumar said.
Latinos have become a growing voting contingent that both Republicans and Democrats have sought in the past two cycles, from releasing more ads in Spanish to boosting congressional surrogates to turn out votership.
Outside of the close contests in Arizona, where Democrats lost their overall Congressional majority, candidates in majority-Latino districts were reelected — including Reps. Raúl Grijalva and Ruben Gallego, who has now announced his candidacy for Senate.

“What Nevada and Arizona really give you a very crisp picture of is how important every voter is when you’re looking at [increasingly] razor thin margins in many elections,” said Clarissa Martinez De Castro, vice president of the Latino Vote Initiative at UnidosUS. “Latinos are increasingly a factor in the winning equation in more places than people have traditionally thought, like… California, Texas, Florida. The reality is that the numbers are growing all over.”
Latinos are the nation’s youngest demographic, with a median age under 30 and a growing young adult voter base, millions of whom will newly be eligible to vote by 2024. Experts say they could be convinced to turn out to vote, and for Democratic candidates — if the party continues to adapt their playbook outside the “white soccer mom” mentality.
This is why the turnout factor has to include data-driven analysis, Kumar added. Among Latinos, many young people may not yet see voting as the first option to secure rights for their community, she said. But that doesn’t mean they are automatically and permanently low-propensity.
“The majority of Latino voters are under the age of 33,” Kumar said. “By default, they’re low-propensity. It doesn’t mean they’re detached — they’re just flowing into the process. They should be taken seriously because they have the ear of their family in a way no party does.”

Over 72% turnout recorded in Nagaland repolling

Kohima: Over 72.29 percent of the 3,248 voters cast their votes in the re-polling in four polling stations in Nagaland on Wednesday, officials said.
Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer V. Shashank said that the re-polling was held smoothly in the four polling stations and no untoward incident was reported.
The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the re-polling in four polling stations at New Colony polling station (Zunheboto constituency), Pangti-V (Sanis), Jaboka Village (Tizit), and Pathso East Wing (Thonohy) but election officials in Nagaland did not explain to the media the reasons.
Assembly polls were held on Monday in 59 of the 60 assembly constituencies in Nagaland, where 85.90 per cent of 13.16 lakh had electors cast their ballots.
According to election officials, voting was largely peaceful on Monday across the northeastern state except for some incidents of violence reported from five districts — Mokokchung, Wokha, Mon, Zunheboto, and Tseminyu.

TN Erode East bypoll turnout nearly 75 percent, peaceful

Erode: Nearly 75 percent of the 2.27 lakh voters cast their votes in the Erode East by-election held in Tamil Nadu on Monday and the polling exercise was peaceful, authorities said here.
Voting began at 7 AM and ended at 6 PM and District Collector H Krishnanunni was among the early voters. Chief Electoral Officer, Satyabrata Sahoo told reporters in Chennai that the polling percentage till 6 PM stood at 74.69 percent.
While the bypoll result would have no immediate impact on the State’s present political landscape, it could set the tone for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin had appealed to the people to consider the bypoll as an opportunity to evaluate the good performance of his government which delivered on its promises and vote for his party’s ally the Congress.
AIADMK top leader K Palaniswami squarely blamed the ruling party over a host of issues, including rise in electricity tariff and not getting NEET exemption for Tamil Nadu as assured and appealed to the people to teach the ruling party a fitting lesson by voting for his party’s ‘Two leaves’ symbol.
Returning Officer K Sivakumar said “peaceful polling was conducted and completed without any incident”. Some voters in polling stations who were in the queue by 6 PM were provided tokens and allowed to vote.
After polling ended, police, along with para-military personnel took out a march to instill confidence among people and prevented congregation of public and party workers to rule out scope for untoward incidents.
A few alleged technical glitches were reported, prompting authorities to suspend voting in two booths.
The AIADMK complained to the Returning Officer that some DMK men were involved in distribution of cash at Asokapuram, but when authorities rushed to the spot they did not find anyone, they said.

At Veerapanchathiram, complaints were received that votes were not recorded for the intended candidate after pressing a particular button on the electronic voting machine (EVM). At Brough Road, EVM did not function properly. In both places, officials suspended voting for sometime, before resuming after addressing the glitches.
Candidates of the ruling DMK-backed EVKS Elangovan of the Congress and AIADMK’s K S Thennarasu among others cast their vote.
The election was necessitated due to the death of Elangovan’s son and Congress legislator E Thirumahan Everaa in January this year.
While 77 candidates are in fray, the battle is likely confined between the Congress and AIADMK. Naam Tamizhar Katchi’s Meneka Navaneethan is among the other candidates.
The outcome of the election, the first since the DMK came to power in 2021, will have no major bearing on the existing strength of the respective parties in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, but is being seen as an indicator of the ruling party’s popularity, especially with the LS elections slated next year.
Eighteen Congress MLAs were elected to the House in 2021 but the DMK ally’s strength came down by 1 due to the vacancy following Thirumahan Everaa’s death.
The Palaniswami-led AIADMK, the main Opposition party in the Assembly has a strength of 66 MLAs and a win here would be a morale booster to the party ahead of the hustings in 2024. The Supreme Court had last week allowed him to continue as the party’ interim chief, seen as a shot in arm for Palaniswami.
The AIADMK’s performance could inspire Palaniswami and his leadership team, which is facing a legal battle led by O Panneerselvam against his expulsion.
The constituency has 2,27,547 voters and women (1,16,497) are more than men (1,11,025) and 25 fall under the third gender category. The total number of polling stations is 238. Votes will be counted on March 2.

Nagaland polls: Over 82% turnout recorded, stray incidents of violence reported

Kohima: Over 82.42 percent of Nagaland’s 13.16 lakh voters cast their votes on Monday in the Assembly polls, held in 59 of the 60 constituencies amid tight security, election officials said.
Polling percentage was 83.85 in the 2018 Assembly polls, and the 2023 turnout is likely to increase after compilation of the reports of the Returning Officers, the officials said.
According to election officials, voting was largely peaceful across the northeastern state except some stay incidents of violence, including stone pelting and minor clashes. No major untoward incident has been reported so far.
In Akuk village under the Bhandari Assembly constituency in Wokha district, supporters of a candidate attacked the rival party workers using sharp-edged weapons in which three persons were injured.
Voting started at 7 a.m. in 2,291 polling stations, manned by 11,500 staff, and enedd at 4 p.m.
Chief Electoral Officer, V. Shashank Shekhar said that around 13.16 lakh voters, including 6,55,144 women, were slated to decide the electoral chances of 183 candidates, including four women.In the 2018 Assembly polls, 190 candidates, including five women, had contested the elections.
In the polls, BJP candidate Kazheto Kinimi was re-elected unopposed from the Akuluto Assembly constituency after his only opponent and Congress nominee Khekashe Sumi withdrew his candidature.
To ensure a free, fair and violence-free election, the Union Home Ministry, at the request of the state government, had provided 305 companies of Central Armed Police Force, while the state security forces have also been deployed across the mountainous state.

As many as 12 parties comprising national and state parties are in the fray. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and its ally Bharatiya Janata Party, and the opposition Congress and the Naga People’s Front (NPP) are the main contenders in the poll battle.
The Congress, which governed the state till 2003, has fielded 23 candidates, while the Naga People’s Front is contesting 22 seats. Other parties, including the RJD, Ram Vilas Paswan faction of the LJP, National People’s Party headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and the NCP were also in the fray. There are 19 independent candidates in the fray as well.
Chief Minister and senior NDPP leader Neiphiu Rio (Northern Angami-II), Deputy Chief Minister and BJP legislature party leader Yanthungo Patton (Tyui), former Chief Minister Taditui Rangkau Zeliang (Peren), Nagaland unit BJP president Temjen Imna Along (Alongtaki), Nagaland Congress president Kewekhape Therie (Dimapur) are seeking re-election.
Non settlement of decades old Naga political imbroglio, demand for a separate state –‘Frontier Nagaland’ – unemployment, illegal drug peddling and menace, besides various anti-incumbency factors were the main issues in the elections.
The counting of votes will be held in Nagaland on March 2 along with Meghalaya and Tripura.

Tripura polls: Over 70% turnout till 3 p.m. amid several incidents of violence

Agartala: Over 70 per cent voters cast their votes till 3 p.m. on Thursday in the Tripura Assembly polls amid heavy security, election officials said.
Several incidents of attacks on political workers and intimidation and obstruction of voters were reported.
At least 60 opposition party workers were injured when the ruling party workers attacked them in South, Gomati, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts. The main opposition CPI-M alleged that the BJP workers have evicted their candidates’ polling agents in more than 25 polling stations in four districts.
Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Gitte Kirankumar Dinkarrao said that wherever the authority got any information of any trouble, the security forces immediately rushed to the areas and resolved the problems.
A senior police official said that a police constable was suspended in Gomati district for his alleged role in urging people to cast votes in favour of the ruling BJP.
Opposition political parties, including CPI-M and Congress, complained that in several places, including Dhanpur and Kakraban, the ruling party workers obstructed the voters belonging to the opposition parties.
Ahead of voting starting at 7 a.m. across the state’s eight districts, men, women and first-time voters queued up in front of the polling stations well before the voting started at 7 a.m. in eight districts.
“EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines), which were not functioning properly, were replaced expeditiously by the engineers,” an election official said.

The CEO said that a total of 259 candidates, including 31 women, in the fray for the election to the 60-member house, and of them, the highest number (55) have been fielded by the ruling BJP, followed by the CPI-M (43), Tipra Motha Party (42), Trinamool Congress (28), and Congress (13). A total of 58 Independent candidates and 14 nominees from various smaller parties are also contesting the elections.
Around 31,000 personnel are stationed in 3,327 polling stations to conduct the voting.
In all, 28.14 lakh voters, including 13.99 lakh women, were eligible to cast their votes in Thursday’s balloting.
A senior police officer said the Union Home Ministry has provided 400 companies (30,000 security personnel) of Central Armed Police Force while around 9,000 Tripura State Rifles jawans and over 6,000 Tripura Police personnel have also been deployed to hold a fair and violence free elections.
