The death toll has not stopped spinning in Turkey and Syria since the two devastating earthquakes that hit their land at dawn on Monday, February 6, 2023.

On Thursday, February 9, the death toll has risen to 21,542, people, while the number of injured reached 78,564, in the two countries, amid official warnings that the number would rise.

The rescue workers in Turkey and Syria continue on Thursday, in extremely cold weather, their efforts in search of survivors under the rubble, with diminishing chances of saving them after three days.

Rescue workers find more survivors under the rubble, although hope is fading, as they race against time to extract potential survivors trapped under the rubble of thousands of buildings that collapsed in the earthquake.

On Thursday, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that the death toll from the earthquake had risen to 17,674, and AFAD said in a statement that the number of injured had risen to 72,879.

AFAD pointed out that 1052 aftershocks occurred after the two earthquakes that struck Kahramanmaras, on February 6, 2023.

In Syria, the death toll has risen to 3,868 across the country, and the number of injured has reached 5,685.

World Health Organization fears that the number of victims may reach 20,000, and has estimated the number of people affected by the earthquake at 23 million.

In turn, the Syrian opposition appealed to all countries and organizations to send aid to the northwest of the country.

    International aid

Since Tuesday, international aid has begun to arrive in Turkey, where a three-month state of emergency has been declared in the ten provinces affected by the earthquake.

Dozens of countries have offered their help to Ankara, including countries from the European Union, the Gulf, the United States, China and Ukraine, which, despite the Russian invasion, sent 87 rescue workers

It is noteworthy that the two earthquakes that struck southern Turkey, on Monday, were of magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, destroying thousands of buildings, and leaving thousands injured, homeless and dead.

Baku: Hospitals in Azerbaijan are ready to receive those injured in the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria this week, President Ilham Aliyev announced here.

“Our hospitals have all the conditions for the treatment of our wounded brothers and sisters,” said the President, as he visited the Turkish Embassy in Baku on Wednesday to offer his condolences, reports Xinhua news agency.

“Beds have already been allocated in Baku and other cities, including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and if necessary, we are ready to bring in patients,” Aliyev told the Turkish Ambassador after signing a book of condolence at the mission.

He said doctors, rescuers, and volunteers are being sent to Turkey, and humanitarian aid campaigns are launched by ordinary people, public organizations, and private companies in Azerbaijan to help those affected by the quakes.

“The people of Azerbaijan voluntarily bring whatever they have to support their brothers. Someone brings a blanket, someone brings a mattress, and someone else brings a coat. People are ready to share whatever they have,” he said.

Azerbaijan has deployed rapid response search and rescue units, totaling more than 700 people, to earthquake-hit regions of Turkey, according to emergency authorities.

More than 200 Azerbaijanis have been evacuated from Turkey since the earthquake struck on Monday, the Foreign Ministry said.

As of Thursday, the overall death toll in Turkey and Syria rose to 15,383.

Turkey has reported 12,391 fatalities, with 62,914 others injured, while in Syria, there were at least 2,992 deaths and nearly 5,040 injuries.

    [ad_1]

Brussels: Flags of the 30 NATO member states at the military alliance’s headquarters in Brussels flew at half-staff to honour the nearly 8,000 people who lost their lives in the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this week.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday, the 30-member alliance, of which Turkey is a member, said: “All flags at NATO Headquarters are at half-mast today in solidarity with our ally Turkey.”

NATO also outlined its contributions to relief efforts.

“Over 1,400 emergency response personnel from more than twenty NATO allies and partners, including invitees Finland and Sweden, are deploying to Turkey, helping to respond to the devastating earthquakes which struck the country,” the post read.

On Monday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had said that he was in contact with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, adding that “NATO allies are mobilising support now”.

NATO and its partners are providing assistance to Turkey through seismic experts, search and rescue teams with dogs, freighters, structural engineers, and medical personnel and supplies, according to an official statement.

As of Wednesday morning, Turkey has reported a total of 5,894 deaths with 34,810 injured, while Syria’s toll has increased to 2,032, with nearly 3,000 injured persons.

The devastating 7.8 tremor struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4.17 a.m. on Monday morning, which was followed by a 6.4-magnitude temblor a few minutes later in Gaziantep province.

At around 1.30 p.m, a third 7.5-magnitude tremor hit Kahramanmaras.

Turkey-Syria earthquake: Miracle baby born under rubble arouses sympathy

    [ad_1]

A baby girl, who was miraculously born under the rubble in Syria and remained connected through the umbilical cord to her mother, who was dead, aroused the sympathy of many, expressing their desire to adopt her.

Paulina Queralt, a Lebanese singer living in France, announced her desire to adopt the little girl on social media.

Paulina took to Twitter and wrote, “I wish someone knew how to reach the child. I am ready to adopt her and take care of her until the last minute of my life.”

She also added, “If anyone has information, please contact me.”

Moroccan broadcaster, Hind Boumashmar, also offered to adopt the orphan infant, and wrote on her Instagram account, “I am ready to sponsor and adopt this child, as she has no one but God, and if legal procedures allow in Syria.”

Requests to adopt her came after video clips of the infant in the town of Jenderes, spread on social media, after a group of men pulled her out of the rubble of a destroyed building.

A man ran out from behind a yellow bulldozer carrying the baby naked, save for a layer of blood-tinged dust that covered her emaciated body, from which the umbilical cord hung, in the freezing heat.

The newborn was taken to a clinic in the nearby town of Afrin for treatment while her relatives spent several hours recovering the bodies of her mother, father Abdullah, four brothers and aunt.

The little girl, who arrived at the clinic in a bad condition, is still undergoing treatment but is now stable, pediatrician Hani Maarouf told AFP.

“She had several bruises and lacerations over all her body,” he said. “She also arrived with hypothermia because of the harsh cold. We had to warm her up and administer calcium.”

Her survival is the latest in a series of stories of children being pulled from the rubble.

The death toll from the earthquake, which devastated Syria and neighboring Turkey, had risen to more than 7,000 by Wednesday — and is expected to rise further.

    turkey syria earthquake refugees 02351

The death toll from a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria is likely to “double or more” from its current level of 28,000, United Nations relief chief Martin Griffiths told Sky News.

“I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble, but I’m sure it will double or more,” said Griffiths after travelling to the city of Kahramanmaras in Turkey, the epicenter of the first earthquake. “We haven’t really begun to count the number of dead,” he said.

The estimate would take the tally of deaths to around three times the 17,118 dead following the huge earthquake in northwestern Turkey in 1999.

On February 6, a series of large earthquakes hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by hundreds of aftershocks.

Rescue teams are still out searching for survivors. “Soon, the search and rescue people will make way for the humanitarian agencies whose job it is to look after the extraordinary numbers of those affected for the next months,” Griffiths said in a video posted to Twitter.

Almost 26 million people have been affected by the earthquake, the World Health Organization said.

Ankara, February 8: The death toll from the earthquakes that jolted Turkey and Syria has risen to at least 7,726, CNN reported. At least 42,259 people have been injured in Turkey and Syria after deadly earthquakes.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said that at least 5,894 people have died and 34,810 others have been injured in Turkey after earthquakes that jolted the country on Monday. At least 1,832 people have died and 3,849 others have been injured in Syria, as per the CNN report.

Orhan Tatar, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency’s general director (AFAD), said that at least 5,775 buildings collapsed after an earthquake hit Turkey on Monday, as per the news report. On Tuesday, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said that around 7,500 Turkish soldiers are working in the earthquake-affected region to assist with rescue operations.

Hulusi Akar also said an additional 1,500 personnel will join the team on Wednesday. Hulusi Akar said that 75 military aircraft have been dispatched to the region, as per the CNN report. He added that nine commando battalions have arrived in the region from the west and four commando battalions from Cyprus will arrive in the region as well.

On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 southern provinces which were hit by massive quakes, Anadolu Agency reported.

While addressing the State Information Coordination Center in the capital Ankara, Erdogan said, “Based on the authority given to us by Article 119 of the Constitution, we decided to declare a state of emergency.”

“We will quickly complete the presidential and parliamentary processes about the state of emergency decision, which will cover 10 provinces where earthquakes have occurred and will last for three months,” he added.

Erdogan’s remarks came after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Pazarcik district of Kahramanmaras province on Monday. Later, a 7.6 magnitude quake centred in Kahramanmaras’s Elbistan district rocked the region, affecting several other provinces, including Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, as per the Anadolu Agency report.

The third earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit Goksun, Turkey on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The earthquake was also felt in several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon.

In his remarks, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, “Both earthquakes were experienced at a distance of 7 kilometres on earth that exponentially increased the severity of the destruction,” Anadolu Agency reported.

He further said, “It has caused great destruction in a very wide area compared to their counterparts. Therefore, we are faced with one of the biggest disasters not only in our Republic’s history but also in our geography and the world.”

As per the Anadolu Agency report, Erdogan emphasized that considering the devastating effect of the earthquake, they ordered expert personnel and vehicles from all over the country to immediately move to the region. He stated that despite the difficulties caused by the weather conditions, the teams struggled selflessly to reach the disaster region and participate in the work.–(ANI)

Turkey-Syria quake toll nearing 8000, searches continue

    [ad_1]

Ankara/Damascus: As desperate searches continued to find more survivors under the rubble in both Turkey and Syria, the death toll from the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the two nations earlier this week has increased to 7,926, authorities have confirmed.

In an address to the nation early Wednesday, Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said at least 5,894 people have been confirmed dead so far, while 34,810 others were injured, CNN reported.

A total 16,139 teams were currently continuing with the search and rescue operations, with additional international teams to be deployed in the coming days, he added.

In Syria, the death toll has increased to 2,032.

In its latest update, the Syrian Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, said the number of fatalities in rebel-held areas in northwest Syria stood at 1,220 and the number of injured people rose to 2,600.

Those figures are “expected to rise significantly due to the presence of hundreds of families under the rubble”, CNN quoted the group as saying.

“Our teams continue search and rescue operations amid difficult circumstances,” it said, describing a tally of more than 400 collapsed buildings, more than 1,300 partially collapsed buildings and thousands of others that were damaged by the early morning quake.

According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, at least 812 deaths were confirmed in government-controlled parts of the country.

Freezing weather conditions are further endangering survivors and complicating rescue efforts, as more than 100 aftershocks have struck the region since the initial tremor on Monday.

More than 60 countries have pledged support and sent humanitarian aid to the affected regions, while there are about 20 international government search and rescue teams on the ground presently.

The devastating 7.8 tremor struck Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4.17 a.m. on Monday morning, which was followed by a 6.4-magnitude temblor a few minutes later in Gaziantep province.

The epicentre of the 7.8-magnitude quake was 23 km east of Nurdagi in Gaziantep, at a depth of 24.1 km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

At around 1.30 p.m, a third 7.5-magnitude tremor hit Kahramanmaras, which officials said was “not an aftershock”.

Turkey’s southern province of Hatay and Syria’s northern Aleppo city suffered the biggest loss of lives, while Lebanon, Israel and Cyprus also felt the tremor.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency on Tuesday in 10 of the country’s hard-hit provinces.
