    Powerful earthquake jolts Indonesia, tsunami alert issued

    Jakarta: A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s western province of West Sumatra early Tuesday and was potential of triggering a tsunami, the meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

    The earthquake happened at 03:00 a.m. Tuesday Jakarta Time (2000 GMT Monday), with the epicenter at 177 km northwest in Mentawai Islands district and a depth of 84 km under the seabed, Xinhua news agency reported.

    A tsunami warning has been put in place by the agency, as the tremors of the quake have the potential of triggering giant waves.

    Kermadec Islands: An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit the Kermadec Islands region in New Zealand on Thursday morning.

    As per the USGS statement, tsunami waves are likely to hit the costs located within 300 km of the epicenter of the earthquake. However, there is no threat to Australia.

    On the other hand, National Emergency Management Agency said there was no tsunami threat for New Zealand.

    The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) tweeted that an earthquake occurred on Thursday at around 6:25 am IST and it has a depth of 41 km.

    New Zealand witnesses many tremors annually

    New Zealand is situated at the convergence of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, making it susceptible to earthquakes.

    Additionally, it falls on the periphery of the Ring of Fire, a region of heightened seismic activity.

    Hokkaido, Japan’s second-largest island, witnessed an earthquake of 6.1 magnitudes on the Richter scale on Saturday night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

    The earthquake shook the coastal cities of Kushiro and Nemuro struck at 10:27 p.m. (6:57 pm IST) at a depth of around 43 kilometers (27 miles). No tsunami warnings were issued by the USGS.

    According to Japanese media, no immediate reports of loss of life or property damage have been reported so far.

    Earthquakes are very common in Japan. In 2004, the world’s deadliest tsunami rocked Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, and Thailand claiming 227,898 dead or missing and a damage of $227,898 million.

    Because of experiencing frequent earthquakes, Japan has strict construction regulations enabling buildings to withstand strong earthquakes. The country also holds routine emergency drills to prepare for a major jolt.
