Mumbai: Priyanka Chopra seems to have empowered many voices in the Hindi film industry since she revealed her experience of having ‘beef with people’ as the prime reason behind her exit from Bollywood.

Reacting to a news article covering Priyanka Chopra’s version of the truth, singer-composer Amaal Mallik wrote on Twitter, “Well it’s something that I face on a daily basis. When fans ask me why I don’t do as many Bollywood films? Now you know 😉 The truth about campism, bootlicking & powerplay within #Bollywood needs to come out more often…See what they tried to do to this amazing woman…”

During a conversation with Dax Shepherd on his podcast ‘Armchair Expert’, Priyanka Chopra revealed why she started looking for work in the US, saying, “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry. I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break. This music thing gave me an opportunity to go into another part of the world, not crave for the movies I didn’t want to get but I would require to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people. It would require grovelling and I had worked a long time by then that I didn’t feel like I wanted to do it.”

The ‘Fashion’ actor marked her singing debut with the single ‘In My City’ in 2012, also featuring American rapper Will.i.am.

The song was a hit and Priyanka garnered a lot of appreciation for her singing. Post that, she released another single, ‘Exotic’, also featuring Cuban-American rapper Pitbull in 2013, which went on to become a chartbuster.

She also released a cover version of the song ‘I Can’t make you love me’ in 2014.

“So when this music thing came I was like ‘fu** it I’am going to America’,” Priyanka said in the podcast.

Amaal Mallik is the voice behind popular numbers such as ‘O Khuda’, ‘Kaun Tujhe’, ‘Buddhu Sa Mann’.

A photograph of a wrecked building has been doing rounds within communities on social media platforms, claiming to be located in north Kashmir and hit by the earthquake Tuesday evening.

Several claims have been attached with the photograph, including the death of three persons in Kupwara. Even more absurd, a police station. Or a regional politician’s residence.

However, when the image was reverse searched by The Kashmir Walla, it was found to be a building from Turkey. It was clicked by Firat Ozdemir for Anadolu Agency.

The country was hit by repeated fatal earthquakes in February this year that killed over 60,000 people.

A Kupwara District Administration official confirmed to The Kashmir Walla that no casualties have been reported in Tuesday evening earthquake.

  • Did Saudi Arabia ban loudspeakers for Ramzan? Know the truth

Did Saudi Arabia ban loudspeakers for Ramzan? Know the truth

    [ad_1]

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) recently issued a circular to prepare mosques to serve the worshipers for the Holy Month of Ramadan 1444AH.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Surendra Poonia shared a Twitter post listing that loudspeakers have been banned during Ramzan.

“Crown Prince & PM of Saudi Arabia Mohd bin Salman passed new orders regarding Namaz during Ramadan -No loudspeakers -No broadcast of prayers -Keep prayers short -No donation collection -No kids in mosques for prayers -No iftar inside mosques भारत में ऐसा करने पर तूफ़ान आ जाये (If you do this in India there will be a storm),” he tweeted.

A tweet and a YouTube video by Sami Hamdi, the founder of The International Interest, a current affairs magazine focusing on the Middle East and North Africa, went viral on the internet.

In the video, Hamidi claimed that the Crown Prince was trying to restrict Ramazan in Saudi Arabia.

Other media outlets such as News18.com, ThePrint, Live Hindustan, ABP, India TV and right-wing media organisation  OpIndia also reported on the false claim.

As the fake news spread, many from the Muslim world believed it to be true and condemned the guidelines have received a backlash from Muslims around the world, with many critics seeing the guidelines as attempts by the Saudi government to limit the influence of Islam in public life.

However, the claim was soon debunked by the fact-checking team of Alt News.

In its report, it said that the circular issued on March 3 by the Ministry has no mention of ban loudspeakers.

What are Saudi Arabia’s new guidelines on Ramzan?

According to the directive, during the holy month of Ramadan, imams and muezzins must not remain absent. If necessary they must delegate the performance of the task for absences with permission from the Regional Branch of the Ministry, and the person acting on their behalf has agreed not to breach the obligation. The allowed time of absence cannot be exceeded.

The order further instructs the imams and muezzins to adhere to the calendar and times of all prayers during the month. They are required to shorten the evening prayer and complete the night prayer in sufficient time so that the worshipers do not face any inconvenience.

The guidelines prevented mosques from collecting financial donations to organize meals for worshipers and ordered that these meals should be prepared and held in designated areas in mosque courtyards rather than inside the mosque.

It is also forbidden in mosques to take pictures or use cameras to broadcast worshipers or recite prayers by any means and prohibited the broadcasting of prayers via all kinds of media. The ministry also prohibited those attending mosques from bringing children.

What is the rule regarding loudspeakers in Saudi Arabia?

In 2021, the minister of Islamic affairs, Abdullatif Al-Sheikh, issued a circular limiting the use of external loudspeakers to only use the loudspeakers for Azaan (call for prayer) and iqamah (the second call for the congregational prayer).

He added that the decision indicates that “the loudness level of the devices should not exceed one-third of the degree of the loudspeaker device.”

In January 2023, the minister of Islamic affairs set the number of external loudspeakers at four which are only to be used in mosques to make prayer calls.

  • Only JPC probe into Adani row can bring out truth: Congress

Only JPC probe into Adani row can bring out truth: Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday said no panel other than a joint parliamentary committee can bring out the truth in the Adani row and the industrialist’s relationship with the prime minister and asserted that it will raise the demand in Parliament when it meets again on March 13.

Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said he had stated on February 16 that any panel by the Supreme Court would only look into violations of SEBI rules and regulations and will not be able to bring out the truth in the Adani issue.

“If the prime minister and the government are to be held accountable, any committee other than the JPC will be nothing but an exercise in legitimisation and exoneration,” he told reporters here, asserting that he had stated this earlier too.

“In the Adani case, the Supreme Court committee is limited only to the investigation of violations of SEBI law and regulation. The truth of what has been the relationship between Prime Minister Modi and (Gautam) Adani will never come to the fore if JPC is not formed,” he said.

The Congress party wants that a JPC be instituted and will raise the demand in the Parliament session beginning March 13, he noted.

The Congress leader also asserted that it has been posing a set of three questions to the prime minister everyday but has not received any answers, and they will remain unanswered by the SC-appointed panel formed to look into the issue.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Praveen Chakravarty, who is also head of the party’s data analytics department, urged “experts” such as Nandan Nilekani and K V Kamath on the SC-appointed panel to “not be timid” as they usually are and “be bold and diligent” in their investigation.

Ramesh said on February 16 he had stated that any committee formed by the Supreme Curt into the Adani-Hindenburg issue would be nothing but an exercise in legitimisation and exoneration.

Asked whether the Congress was not in favour of the Supreme Court setting up a panel, he said “we are not confident that the truth in Adani issue will come out” through it.

The Congress and some other opposition parties have been demanding the constitution of a joint parliamentary committee to look into the Adani issue in the wake of charges of stock manipulation and financial irregularities raised by US firm Hindenburg that led to meltdown of stocks of Adani Group companies on Indian bourses.

The party had also stalled proceedings in both houses of Parliament over the issue and it is likely to step up the heat over its demand in the forthcoming budget session of Parliament.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered setting up of a six-member committee headed by former apex court judge Justice A M Sapre to investigate the recent Adani Group shares crash triggered by the Hindenburg Research’s fraud allegations and other regulatory aspects related to stock markets.

The court asked the panel to submit its report in a sealed cover within two months.

The top court observed that the PILs pertained to “the loss of investors’ wealth over the past few weeks due to the steep decline of share prices of Adani Group companies, precipitated by the Hindenburg Research report which alleged manipulations and malpractices by the Adani Group companies” and also directed market regulator SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) to complete its ongoing probe into the issue in two months and file a status report.

Besides former apex court judge Justice Sapre, the other members of the court-appointed panel will be O P Bhat (former Chairman of SBI), Justice J P Devadhar (retired judge of the Bombay High Court), K V Kamath, Nandan Nilekani and Somasekharan Sundaresan.

Will continue to ask questions about Adani till truth is out: Rahul

    [ad_1]

Nava Raipur: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the party will keep asking questions about Gautam Adani till the truth comes out, as he flayed BJP leaders for coming out in support of the industrialist in Parliament.

He also said the party should formulate a new plan to carry forward the “tapasya ” undertaken through the Bharat Jodo Yatra and that he along with the entire country will participate in it, indicating another such initiative.

Launching a strong attack on the government on the Adani issue, he charged that Adani was working against the country by cornering the entire wealth.

“When we asked in Parliament what is the prime minister’s relation with Adani our entire speech is expunged. We will ask in Parliament thousands of times till the truth of Adani ji is out, we will not stop,” he said at the 85th plenary session of the Congress here amid applause.

“I want to tell Adani that his company is ‘hurting’ the country and is ‘snatching the entire infrastructure of country,” the former Congress president charged.

“The battle for the country’s freedom was against one company as it had taken away all wealth and ports etc.,” he said.

“History is being repeated. This is work against the country and if that happens the entire Congress party will stand against it,” he said.

He also said that the party will continue to ask questions on the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Adani.

Hindenburg Research had made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the Adani Group.

The Adani Group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

  • EC decision to allot ‘bow and arrow’ symbol to us victory of truth: Eknath Shinde

EC decision to allot ‘bow and arrow’ symbol to us victory of truth: Eknath Shinde

    [ad_1]

Agra: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said the Election Commission’s decision to allot his faction of the Shiv Sena the “bow and arrow” election symbol was a victory of truth.

Addressing a Shivaji Jayanti function in Agra in Uttar Pradesh Sunday evening, he said his faction got the “bow and arrow” symbol because of the blessings of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The majority has a weightage in democracy and the truth has prevailed, he said on the Election Commission decision.

Shinde was in Agra to attend the 393rd birth anniversary celebrations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the 17th-century Maratha ruler, at the Diwan-e-Aam of the Agra Fort.

Union ministers Raosaheb Patil Danve and S P Singh Baghel attended the celebrations.

It was organised by Ajinkya Deogiri Pratisthan, a social and cultural organisation, in collaboration with the Cultural Department of Maharashtra.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for allowing the celebrations at the Agra Fort.

Talking to reporters, Shinde said, “It was a historic day for the followers of Shivaji Maharaj to celebrate his jayanti at the Agra Fort.”

The Maratha ruler was held captive briefly by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb at the Diwan-e-Aam of the Agra Fort.

The Election Commission on Friday recognised the Shinde-led faction as the real Shiv Sena and ordered allocation of the “bow and arrow” poll symbol to it, delivering a big blow to the rival camp led by former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, whose father Bal Thackeray founded the outfit in 1966.

In a unanimous order on the six-month-old petition filed by Shinde, the three-member Commission said it had relied on the numerical strength of the party in the legislative wing, where the chief minister enjoyed the support of 40 of the 55 MLAs and 13 of the 18 Lok Sabha members.

It gave a detailed reasoning on why it was forced to ignore the claims of the rival factions led by Shinde and Thackeray respectively over the organisational wing of the party, contending that the amendments to the Shiv Sena constitution in 2018, after the death of founder Balasaheb Thackeray, were undemocratic and paved the way to appoint people from a coterie as office bearers without any election at all.

Shinde broke ranks with Uddhav Thackeray in June last year and formed the government in Maharashtra in alliance with the BJP.

  • The truth about caffeine: how coffee really affects our bodies

The truth about caffeine: how coffee really affects our bodies

    [ad_1]

Coffee. Go juice. Liquid gold. The one with all the psychoactive properties. Once used by Sufi mystics as an aid to concentration during religious rituals, it’s now one of the most ubiquitous drinks on the planet: we get through about 2bn cups a day.

It’s also one of the most valued and pored-over drinks. One particularly sought-after blend, Black Ivory, which is produced by encouraging elephants to digest arabica berries, retails at more than £2,000 a kilogram, while coffee-making championships attract thousands of spectators.

But what does it actually do to you? You might have a vague idea that caffeine wakes you up, wrecks your sleep and can aid sporting performance, but do you know how much you can drink safely? Considering that a typical americano contains more than 100 biologically active ingredients other than caffeine, what do you know about the drug you are glugging two or three times a day? What is happening inside your body when you have a double espresso in the morning?

    How quickly does it act?

The effects may start before you even take a sip. Just inhaling the scent of coffee can improve memory and stimulate alertness, according to a 2019 study of 80 18- to 22-year-olds. Another study, from 2018, found that subjects did better in tests of analytical reasoning after a whiff of the good stuff. That said, the researchers in the 2018 study suggested that the effect probably had a placebo element, with the expectation of improved performance proving at least partly responsible.

What about when you actually drink it? “There’s a chance that the use of any supplement will carry a placebo effect,” says Dr Mike T Nelson, a researcher and performance specialist who recently co-wrote the International Society of Sports Nutrition’s position on coffee. “Many researchers use randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trials to try to ferret that out. And if you look at some of the higher-dose caffeine studies and when they have been compared with a placebo, we still see a performance-enhancing effect of caffeine.”

This is why the effects really kick in some time after you start drinking. While a 2008 study found that the effects of a cup of coffee can occur just 10 minutes after ingestion, it said peak caffeine concentration in the blood occurred after 45 minutes.

How does coffee wake you up?

Caffeine acts as a central nervous system stimulant – making you more alert and focused, but potentially also more irritable and anxious. It’s all to do with your body’s adenosine receptors, which help to regulate your heart rate, blood flow and sleep-wake cycles. When adenosine – an organic compound that occurs naturally in your body – binds to these receptors, it triggers physiological responses that lead to a decrease in cellular activity, often promoting drowsiness and sleep.

Caffeine can fool your nerve cells and bind to these instead, preventing adenosine from doing its thing. This promotes increased alertness, while also allowing the brain’s stimulating neurotransmitters (such as dopamine) to run wild. This makes it a mood-booster for many people, but can also lead to anxiety after high doses. While your body adapts to caffeine’s effects after a while, different people can have very different responses to the same amount of it.

Can it really boost athletic performance?

A barista serves a coffee in a shop
The amount of caffeine in seemingly similar high-street coffees can vary significantly. Photograph: Wera Rodsawang/Getty Images

It certainly can. A 2020 study of amateur cyclists found that coffee improved performance by an average of 1.7%. This may not sound like much, but it’s a big deal for even moderately competitive athletes. An older British study reported a dose-related improvement in tests of reaction times, memory and visual-spatial reasoning among coffee drinkers.

Most of these performance benefits come from caffeine, which is why coffee isn’t always the best option. A recent analysis by the consumer group Which? found that a medium cappuccino at Costa contains 325mg of caffeine, while the Starbucks equivalent has just 66mg. Even more confusingly, a 2003 study found a wide range of caffeine concentrations (259mg to 564mg a serving) in the same drink obtained from the same outlet on six consecutive days. (The NHS doesn’t give an upper limit for daily caffeine intake unless you are pregnant, but the US Food and Drug Administration suggests that 400mg is fine.)

“Beans can make a difference – standard robusta beans are higher in caffeine than arabica beans, for example,” says Nelson. “But there are other factors – roasting actually breaks down caffeine, so in general darker roasts will have a lower caffeine content. But even when outlets try to control for beans, brewing method and so on, the variability in caffeine content is still quite high.

“This is why, for athletes, if you’re using it purely for performance-enhancing effects and you want to be very specific with it, I recommend taking caffeine in a pill form, because you can control your intake better.

“I’ve worked with some endurance athletes in the past who would just stop and get a normal coffee at any shop before the race – and a lot of times their performance might be a little bit different, probably because the caffeine amount wasn’t as tightly controlled.”

When should you stop drinking it?

This is hotly contested. Caffeine has a half-life of about six hours, which means that if you have your final espresso at 4pm, half of the caffeine is still in your system at 10pm, when you should be winding down for the night. Plenty of people subscribe to the idea of a caffeine curfew – stopping at 2pm or 3pm, for instance – but that doesn’t mean it’s open season in the morning.

“It should be a nice, balanced thing,” says Nick Littlehales, a sleep coach who has worked with several high-profile football teams. “I see a lot of people who have three coffees more or less back to back in the morning. They’re at 1,000-1,500mg before they get to lunchtime – then they stop their intake. That’s not a sensible way to do things: it’s about keeping it nice and level, with no big ups and downs. Keep track of when you have a little bit of a low-energy lull, then you can actually use your caffeine intake strategically, to help you out at key times.”

    Is it good for you?

This is where those other biologically active compounds come in. It’s also where the science becomes less clear. A few people suggest that excess intake may be linked to increased cancer risk or heart problems, while others say a few cups a day is fine.

It’s helpful to look at meta-analyses of many studies – or, even better, an “umbrella review”. One of the largest of these, which looked at more than 200 meta-analyses in 2017, said: “Coffee consumption seems generally safe within usual levels of intake, with summary estimates indicating the largest risk reduction for various health outcomes at three to four cups a day, and more likely to benefit health than harm.” Another from the same year found that coffee was associated with a probable decreased risk of several forms of cancer, alongside cardiovascular disease, Parkinson’s disease and type 2 diabetes.

A woman standing by the window holding a cup of coffee
Caffeine consumption has been found to decrease the risk of depression. Photograph: Halfpoint/Getty Images/iStockphoto

What about coffee’s other long-term benefits? There is some evidence that its mood-elevating effects can be beneficial over the long term. In a 2016 meta-analysis of observational studies, caffeine consumption was found to decrease the risk of depression, while a Finnish study from 2010 found a similar result with coffee. In the Finnish study, the connection was weaker when other caffeinated drinks were consumed – suggesting that there is something in coffee specifically that can affect mood. One theory is that it’s the antioxidants, as these tend to correlate with reduced stress overall.

Coffee can also help with burning fat, but it’s most effective in conjunction with exercise. “In order to get rid of fat, you have to break it from the cell and then burn it,” says Nelson. “Caffeine has been shown to increase lipolysis, or the breaking part.” So, having a quick cup before your morning workout does more than just give you an energy boost.

What about the way you drink it?

Does how you drink it make a difference? In short: yes. Darker roasts, as well as being lower in caffeine, tend to contain fewer antioxidants and lower levels of chlorogenic acid, a compound that can protect the body against inflammation and cell damage. When you grind the beans doesn’t matter (unless you prefer that fresh-ground flavour), but how much you grind them probably does – a finer grind releases more polyphenols, giving fine-ground brews slightly more beneficial effects.

Coffee filtered through paper (in an Aeropress or a V60, say) may be healthier than coffee made with a metal filter (in a cafetière, for example) or no filter at all. A study published in 2020 that followed more than 500,000 healthy coffee drinkers for about two decades found that those who drank filtered coffee (as opposed to just boiling ground beans and drinking the water) had lower rates of arterial disease and death. The study’s authors concluded that the substances in coffee that can raise LDL cholesterol – the “bad” kind – can be removed using a filter; they said a cup of unfiltered coffee typically contains about 30 times the concentration of the lipid-raising substances compared with filtered coffee.

    A pour-over coffee cone
Filtering coffee through paper using a V60 or other pour-over cone is healthier than using a cafetière, research suggests. Photograph: GS Visuals/Getty Images/Image Source

The brewing temperature doesn’t matter that much; while some purists will claim that pouring boiled water directly on to your coffee grounds will “burn” the flavour, it seems to have little effect on the beneficial compounds inside.

As for which of the dizzying array of options in most coffee shops is best, surprisingly little research has been done. “I’d expect having a dose of fat – milk – with your coffee would slightly slow the effect of the caffeine, just as eating food with it would,” says Nelson. A study from 2001 looked at giving people caffeine with carbohydrates and found no additional performance-enhancing effects from taking the two together.

Obviously, if you drink half a pint of milk and two sugars in your latte, it increases the calorie count; is there any way to mitigate that? With a sprinkle of cinnamon, perhaps? “It’s probably not going to have a huge effect on fat-burning,” says Nelson. “There are some studies showing that it may help with glucose metabolism if you give it in a pretty high dose – so if you’re looking at glycemic control, it may be helpful for that. But I wouldn’t count on a little dusting doing much good.”

As for “bulletproof” coffee – the now-trademarked staple of aspiring biohackers made with butter or coconut oil – evidence of its benefits is more scarce than the marketing might make you think. Yes, it can curb cravings and stop you feeling peckish in the mid-morning lull – because it comes with a big scoop of calorific fat – but if you are using it to replace a breakfast like eggs and spinach, you may be cutting down on the nutrients you get first thing in the morning.

So, what is the prescription? Up to three cups a day is probably fine, filtered if possible, dark roasted if you are trying to cut down on caffeine, but light if you are trying to benefit from the other ingredients. Space them out in the morning and try to leave a decent gap after your last one before you go to bed. Oh, and if you want to try your hand at the Aeropress world coffee-making championships, give it a go – they let anyone in.

‘Truth always comes out’: Rahul Gandhi on BBC documentary ban

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday slammed the Centre over the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that banning the Press cannot “suppress” the truth from coming out.

Gandhi’s remarks came after the Centre banned the BBC documentary on PM Modi describing it as a ‘propaganda piece’ designed to push a discredited narrative.

“The truth always comes out. No amount of banning the Press and using institutions like ED and CBI against people can suppress the truth from coming out,” Gandhi said.

Last week, India denounced the controversial BBC documentary series on Prime Minister Modi.

“We think this is a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias, lack of objectivity, and frankly continuing colonial mindset are blatantly visible,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during a weekly media briefing on January 19.

The MEA spokesperson added that the documentary is a reflection of individuals who are peddling this narrative again.
Meanwhile, in a strong response to the BBC documentary on Saturday, more than 300 eminent Indians, including retired judges, bureaucrats, and armed forces veterans signed a statement slamming the British national broadcaster for showing “unrelenting prejudice” towards India and its leader.

Earlier today, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju made a scathing attack apparently on a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi which has sparked controversy since its release, and said some people have still not gotten over their “colonial intoxication” and for them “whites” are still their “rulers”.

“For some people, the white rulers are still the masters whose decision on India is final and not the decision of the Supreme Court of India or the will of the people of India,” Rijiju tweeted in Hindi tagging his earlier tweet on the minority in the country, who he claimed were moving forward with positivity.
