  • Karnataka beats Meghalaya to win Santosh Trophy after 54 years in Riyadh

Karnataka beats Meghalaya to win Santosh Trophy after 54 years in Riyadh

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: Karnataka ended a 54-year-old title drought in the 76th National Football Championships for the Santosh Trophy when they defeated first-timers Meghalaya 3-2 in a well-fought final at the King Fahd International Stadium, here on Saturday.

The young Karnataka team comprising reserve players from Bengaluru FC and some talented players from clubs from the Bengaluru District Football Association’s Super Division League made history when it won the first Santosh Trophy final to be played on foreign soil.

Karnataka had last won their fourth title as Mysore way back in 1968-69 at Banglore and had since then reached the final only in 1974-75. They have finished runners-up on five occasions.

However, the team coached by Ravi Babu Raju exceeded all expectations and quelled a strong challenge by Meghalaya to claim a memorable victory and a historic title.

M Sunil Kumar (2nd min), Bekey Oram (19th min) and Robin Yadav (44th min) scored the goals for Karnataka while Brolington Warlarpih (7th min) and Sheen Stevenson (60th min) scored for Meghalaya in the game of two halves.

Karnataka played a tactically superior game and caught Meghalaya on the wrong foot off counterattacks. They dominated the midfield and though Meghalaya fought back well in the second half, their forwards missed some crucial chances as they fell short.

Karnataka took the lead in the second minute of a frantic first half when Sunil M’s shot went in off defender Bankhemi Mawlong’s leg after defender Robin Yadav set him up with a superb long throw.

But Meghalaya came back within a few minutes when they were awarded a penalty when forward Sheen Stevenson was brought down by defender Nikhil G with a body block as the Meghalaya star made a fine run into the box from the left side. Defender Brolington Warlarpih converted from the spot comfortably to make it 1-1.

Karnataka took control of the midfield and made some superb attacks as they took a 3-1 lead just before the breather.

Forward Jacob John Kaitooaren floated a ball into the far corner to M Sunil Kumar, who centred it and Bekey Oram tapped the high ball into the net past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 for Karnataka in the 19th minute.

Karnataka had a couple of more chances to add to their tally but their forwards either shot wide or were thwarted by the defenders. Meghalaya had one chance to reduce the margin but Donlad Diengdoh’s shot off a superb attack was deflected out by a defender.

Karnataka made it 3-1 when Robin Yadav planted a superb free-kick into the top left corner for his sixth goal (four freekicks, one penalty, one field goal) of the tournament. Robin, who is part of the Bengaluru FC reserves, thus became the third-highest scorer in the tournament behind joint leaders Naro Hari Shrestha of West Bengal and Nijo Gilbert of Kerala, who have nine goals each.

Just when it looked like Karnataka were cruising towards victory, Meghalaya reduced the margin when Sheen Stevenson struck in the 60th minute after Donlad Diengdoh played a dummy off a pass by Banskheml Mawlong to distract the defenders.

Meghalaya created a lot of pressure in the last half hour of the match in search of the equaliser but the Karnataka defense stood strong and thwarted them. They were also denied in second-half added time when an attempt by Ronaldkydo Lyngdoh went off the top of the crosspiece.

Rajat Paul Lyngdoh (Meghalaya) with 6 clean sheets in 12 matches was adjudged as the Best Goalkeeper of the Championship while Robin Yadav (Karnataka), who scored six goals in the tournament including one in the final, got the Player of the Championship award.

  • Border Gavaskar Trophy: Indian bowlers on fire; Aussies paralysed by fear

Border Gavaskar Trophy: Indian bowlers on fire; Aussies paralysed by fear

    [ad_1]

India has retained the prestigious Border Gavaskar trophy with emphatic victories over the visiting Australian side. While there is plenty of reason for Indian fans to be cheerful, the pathetic display of the Aussies came as a shocker to those who have seen the famous Aussie fighting spirit in the past. One just cannot imagine the world conquering Aussie teams of yesteryears caving in like this team has done.

Cricketing battles between the two nations have usually been hard fought competitions. The Australians used to reserve a special effort whenever they played in India. India has a reputation of being difficult to beat on home soil and the Australian captains knew that very well. They used to approach the task with great determination and cherish every victory very highly. The series in 2001 was labelled as the Final Frontier by Australian skipper Steve Waugh and it was an apt description for the cricket battle that ensued.

But this time it was a rout. After Australia lost by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test, it lost again by six wickets in the second Test. Thus India retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the fourth consecutive time. Our players bowled magnificently. At Delhi, Ravindra Jadeja’s seven wicket haul and Ravi Ashwin’s deceptive flight had the Australian batters in a tizzy. They had no idea of how to counter this double spin attack.

India on the other hand played boldly and had the depth to create an insurmountable hurdle for the Aussies. Their spinner Nathan Lyon admitted this when he stated: “Axar and Ashwin are not lower order batters. In any other team they would be batting in the top six of the line up,” he said. Moreover the sweep shot that almost all Aussie batters employed to tackle the spinning ball, was a big blunder. The situation and pitch conditions were not right for sweeping without hesitation.

Take the case of Steve Smith. He is a highly experienced player and has played 92 Test matches so far. He has scored 30 centuries in Test cricket. In the past he has rarely used the sweep shot and on one occasion he stated in an interview that he does not favour the sweep shot against spinners. Yet in the second innings, facing Ravi Ashwin he tried to sweep and was out. What prompted him to commit suicide? It looked like the entire team had already decided to use the same shot against Indian spinners.

The fact is that the Australians have allowed themselves to come under psychological pressure. Ashwin and Jadeja are not just overcoming Aussies on the pitch but have also wreaked havoc in their minds. The Aussies have only themselves to blame for this situation. As everyone knows, sport is played not only on the field but inside the mind too. If a team approaches the task with confidence and determination, it will win on the field. If a team approaches with nervousness and hesitation, it will lose. That is what has happened to the Aussies.

It all began with their complaints about the pitch at Nagpur being tailored to suit Indian bowlers. Usually such statements are made to put pressure on the home team and prevent them from tailoring the pitch. But this time the players put themselves under pressure by such claims. And once the anxiety gripped their minds, they were unable to pull themselves out of the valley of fear.

So what lies ahead? Two more Test matches are looming–one, at Indore and the other at Ahmadabad. The Aussies need their confidence to be restored. Skipper Pat Cummins has left the scene and gone back to Australia for some personal reasons. But he will probably return soon. He and other dependable former players must advise the team and bring back the determination that Australia is famous for.

While it is always a great feeling to see the Indian team winning matches, no true cricket fan would like to see a weak and meek opposition. The fun and excitement of any sport happens only when two good teams fight it out and the victory comes in the last ball. A five-day Test match getting over within three days, as has happened now, is not worth watching. So the Aussies must pull up their socks and show us the bravery that their predecessors like Bill Lawry, Bobby Simpson, Alan Border and others used to show us in the past.

  • Saudi Arabia to host Santosh Trophy semifinals and final

Saudi Arabia to host Santosh Trophy semifinals and final

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The semi-finals and final of the 76th National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy, to be held abroad for the first time ever, are set to take place between March 1 to 4, 2023, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, it was announced here on Thursday.

The AIFF Secretary General Dr Shaji Prabhakaran, along with Mr Avijit Paul, Executive Committee Member, AIFF, and Joint Secretary, Football Association of Odisha, made the announcement here on the eve of the launch of the Santosh Trophy.

Dr Prabhakaran informed the media that it was decided in a meeting between the AIFF and the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) earlier in the day that the iconic King Fahd International Stadium will play host to semi-finals and finals of the Hero Santosh Trophy.

The timings of the aforementioned matches will be announced at a later date.

“This is a great moment for Indian football, as the four states that make it to the semifinals will get to fight for the Santosh Trophy title in Saudi Arabia. I would like to convey my sincere thanks to the SAFF for all their help and cooperation in helping us achieve this vision of taking the Hero Santosh Trophy to a next level,” said Dr Prabhakaran.

“I would also like to profusely thank the Government of Odisha for extending their massive and continuing support in hosting the 12 teams in the final rounds of the Santosh Trophy,” he added.

The AIFF Secretary General pointed out that this would make the final round, beginning on Friday, here in Bhubaneswar, an even more interesting and competitive event.

“The battle for the last four is likely to be an intense one, and we all hope that the fight will go down to the wire to book a spot on the international stage, which will be the first time since 1941, when the Santosh Trophy was launched as a six-venue tournament with the final being played in Kolkata,” he said.

“The Santosh Trophy is central to our plans in development of football across the country, as we look to improve the conditions for all our State FAs to make bigger contributions in taking Indian Football forward. Helping out Member Associations is central to our plans for long term growth, as we have charted out last month in Vision 2047, and these are just baby steps towards a much larger goal,” he added.

The Secretary General also spoke at length about the development of football across the country, something that has been presented by the Federation in Vision 2047, earlier this year.

“If you go through the Strategic Roadmap, we aim to improve both our men’s and women’s teams in the coming years, but that improvement does not happen with the click of a button. There are carefully charted out steps that we must follow in order to achieve our goals. We are also getting a lot of support from the Central and various State Governments, and we are extremely thankful for it,” said Dr Prabhakaran.

Meanwhile, AIFF Executive Committee Member and FAO Joint Secretary Mr Avijit Paul lauded the Federation for the changes it has brought about in Indian football, and the way it is working towards an overall improvement in a strategic manner.

“The AIFF has hugely changed in the way it has been working in recent times. Previously, we, the state teams used to play only a couple of matches and then just go back, if we did not qualify for the Santosh Trophy Final Rounds. Now, however, everyone is getting a substantial number of games, and that is the way forward,” said Paul.

“The President Mr Kalyan Chaubey and the Secretary General Dr Prabhakaran have also been closely looking into the development of football across various parts of the country, something that was not seen before,” he added.

The Federation Secretary General further expressed interest in increasing Indian football’s collaboration with Odisha.

“We are very serious about a collaboration with Odisha as a key partner in our projects. Football is among the top 2 sports in Odisha, and we need to further grow it here,” he said.

The final rounds of the Santosh Trophy are set to get underway in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from February 10-20.

Twelve teams have been divided into two groups of six each in the Final Rounds, and will play each other in a round robin format; the top two teams from each group will have the honour of being the first teams in the Santosh Trophy to play on foreign soil, once they move to Riyadh for the semifinals and final.
