CPI-M leader’s wife got college teacher’s job without clearing exam: Trinamool

Kolkata: A senior Trinamool Congress leader on Thursday made an explosive allegation claiming that the wife of a senior CPI-M leader in West Bengal secured a non-teaching job in a reported Kolkata college without appearing or qualifying for the examination on this count.

Trinamool state General Secretary and spokesman Kunal Ghosh alleged that Mili Chakraborty, wife of CPI-M central committee member and the former leader of Left in the Assembly Sujan Chakraborty secured the job of “instrument keeper” at Dinabandhu Andrews College without appearing for examination on this count.

“Several complaints relating to irregularities in recruitments in educational institutions of the state during the previous Left Front regime have surfaced. These have been forwarded to the office of state Education Minister Bratya Basu for further investigation. Let the past documents be examinations and the complaints be looked into,” he told media persons.

Ghosh claimed that Mili Chakroborty was associated as an employee with Dinabandhu Andrews College for 34 until she retired in 2021. He also claimed that the wife of the CPI-M leader retired from the college with a base pay of Rs 55,000 a month and is entitled for pension.

Rubbishing the allegation, Sujan Chakraborty said that his wife joined the services after properly appearing and qualifying in the examination on this count through a proper joining letter.

“She retired in the same post that she joined. This proves that there were no irregularities or nepotism in the education system of the state during the previous Left Front regime. Such baseless allegations are being raised by those Trinamool Congress leaders who are neck-dip in corruption,” he said.

Defamation suit filed against Trinamool bigwigs for derogatory remarks

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A defamation suit has been filed against a West Bengal minister and the spokesman of Trinamool Congress on charges of making derogatory remarks against the leader of the opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

The suit was filed before a district court at Contai in East Midnapore district by Soumnedu Adhikari, the younger brother of Suvendu Adhikari.

The suit has been filed against Cabinet minister Shashi Panja, Trinamool state general secretary and party spokesman Kunal Ghosh, and Trinamool mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’.

Soumendu Adhikari told newspersons that for quite some time now, derogatory and baseless remarks are being made against the leader of the opposition, even tagging him with the recent development of termination of non-teaching staff in state-run schools.

“There have been articles in ‘Jago Bangla’ claiming that 55 of the terminated staff were recruited following recommendations from Suvendu Adhikari when he was with the Trinamool Congress. These are all baseless allegations,” Soumendu Adhikari said.

He also said that before filing the defamation suit on Wednesday, he had sent a legal notice to all the three parties, asking them to tender unconditional apology for making baseless and derogatory remarks.

“Not receiving any reply, I finally filed the defamation suit against them on Wednesday,” he said.

It is learnt that a criminal defamation suit has been filed against Panja and Adhikari under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with punishment for defamation.

  • AISF’s Siddique assaulted at DA agitation site by Trinamool panchayat member

AISF’s Siddique assaulted at DA agitation site by Trinamool panchayat member

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Naushad Siddique, the lone All India Secular Front member in the West Bengal Assembly, was on Saturday assaulted on the dais at the protest venue of the joint forum of state government employees staging a relay fast and a sit-in demonstration to demand pending dearness allowance dues.

Siddique had been on the dais to express solidarity with the agitating employees. As he was addressing the protesters, a man wearing a black trouser, a camouflage-pattern shirt and cap and carrying a helmet, suddenly came up to him.

“What have you done for the sake of the minority community?” he asked Siddique after stopping him from speaking. In response, the MLA said he does not intend to do anything only and specifically for the minority. “I want to work for all – majority or minority,” he said.

At this, the stranger immediately lost his cool and immediately pushed the legislator heavily. However, those present at the dais immediately intervened and did not give him any chance to assault Siddique further.

Some of the agitators present on the dais in fury tried to attack the stranger, but were stopped by Siddique. “Leave him. This is nothing but a drama and an attempt to malign your movement,” Siddique was heard saying.

The assailant was handed over to the police and late in the evening, identified as Abdul Salam akas Tota, an elected Trinamool Congress gram panchayat member of Bankra-II village in adjoining Howrah district.

He is known to be a close confidant of district Trinamool leader and former minister Rajib Banerjee.

However, the local Trinamool leadership distanced itself from him. Sheikh Meher Ali, the deputy chief of Bankra-II panchayat, said that although Salam continues to be a member of the panchayat, he has no connection with the ruling party any more.

“There are many cases pending against him. So, the party maintains a distance from him,” Ali said.

Just before the attack on him, Siddique said that the state government’s excuse of lack of funds for not paying the dearness allowance arrears was baseless. “But lots of money is spent by the government behind fairs and festivals. The state government should stop such wasteful expenditure and pay the legitimate dues of the state government,” he said.

Siddique later told newspersons that the stranger was a plant by some vested interests to create confusion at the agitation venue. “But those who are present here are all educated people and hence, the stranger was handed over to police. I hope the police should now probe honestly to track the masterminds behind this incident… the police are supposed to protect this agitation dais as per court order,” he said.

  • Trinamool MP seeks ED probe into affairs of ‘certain’ company, avoids naming Adani

Trinamool MP seeks ED probe into affairs of ‘certain’ company, avoids naming Adani

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy sought to know in the Lok Sabha on Thursday as to why the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is not investigating the affairs of a “certain” company which did round-tripping of its finances and bought assets in India.

However, Roy made the remarks without taking the name of Adani group.

The Trinamool MP also demanded that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman should ask market regulator SEBI to inquire into the fallen shares of this “certain” company.

Roy raked up the issue while participating in the discussions on the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha.

Sitharaman, though, was not present in the House when Roy raised the issue.

Without taking Adani group’s name, Roy said, “The Hindenburg report said that a certain company did round-tripping of its finances, and bought assets in India after round-tripping them from abroad. You know in the snowy areas, the ice comes down. The ice came down on this company’s shares as well. In three days, it lost to the tune of Rs 10 lakh crore.

“You people tell me which company is this. Its name cannot be taken. If we say Adani, they will demand expunging the name.”

“I have a simple demand from the Finance Minister. She has got the SEBI under her. If a company has done round-tripping, it is the job of SEBI to look into it,” he added.

“I demand that she (Sitharaman) should ask SEBI to inquire into the fallen shares of this certain company. Also, the ED, which is a matter of fear for the Opposition, is under the Finance Minister as well. It is investigating each and every politician from the Opposition. Why is the ED not investigating the affairs of this company,” the Trinamool MP asked.

  • On Netaji’s birth anniversary eve, Trinamool and BJP play their political cards

On Netaji’s birth anniversary eve, Trinamool and BJP play their political cards

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: As the country is all set to celebrate the 126th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, politics over the issue is heating up in West Bengal where the great Indian freedom fighter has his roots. The ruling Trinamool Congress and the principal opposition BJP have their own political cards to play in the matter.

The Trinamool Congress-led state government has recently announced the decision to set up a ‘Jai Hind Vahini’ on the lines of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

This announcement has led to a political slugfest in the state where the opposition parties have denounced it as a blatant attempt to politicize the Netaji issue. This is especially so in the backdrop of the recent development in which the office of the additional director general, West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate, NCC, had pointed out how the careers of over one lakh NCC cadets have been affected because of the non-payment of its share of expenditure by the state government.

According to CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty, the Trinamool Congress reportedly has a branch organization whose name is also Jai Hind Vahini.

“So, is this yet another attempt to politicize the school education sphere through this move under the garb of paying homage to Netaji? What is the justification of this move, when the NCC is there?” he questioned.

Somewhat on the same lines, the BJP’s state spokesman Samik Bhattacharya too has criticized the move.

He said: “The entire school education system in West Bengal is going through a deep crisis because of the massive teachers’ recruitment irregularity scam. In such a situation this move on Jai Hind Vahini is nothing but a joke in the name of Netaji. First, the state government should try to revive the education system by cleaning it up.”

Trinamool Congress senior legislator Tapas Roy rubbished the opposition criticism by describing it as an unnecessary attempt to politicize each and every issue.

Roy said: “No one is saying that the Jai Hind Vahini will be set up, sacrificing the existing NCC scheme. This is just to pay homage to Netaji on the occasion of his birth anniversary. The opposition in reality does not have any respect for the great souls of the nation and hence they unnecessarily politicize the entire issue.”

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s scheduled program to pay homage to Netaji in front of Shahid Minar in Kolkata on January 23 has stirred controversy in West Bengal.

Although the RSS cannot be strictly defined as a political force, major political parties in West Bengal and even some analysts feel that the saffron camp will surely try to gain political mileage by this move of Bhagwat before the West Bengal panchayat polls in 2023 and more importantly the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to Trinamool Congress’s state vice-president Jai Prakash Majumdar, it is intriguing why the RSS chief for the first time chose to pay tribute to Netaji and more especially why he chose Kolkata as the venue.

“It is clear that the move is to give BJP some oxygen in the state before the panchayat polls. The RSS has never shown any respect for Netaji before. Even Netaji refused to meet Vinayak Damodar Savarkar,” Majumdar said.

The CPI(M)’s central committee member Robin Deb feels that the RSS and the Trinamool Congress have always operated on a mutual admiration basis, where Mamata Banerjee describes RSS as the true warriors against the communists and the latter equates her with Goddess Durga.

“This same tradition of mutual admiration is continuing where Netaji’s birth anniversary celebration has just become a medium,” Deb added.

Historian AK Das too cannot recollect the RSS celebrating the birth anniversary of Netaji so elaborately and that too in West Bengal with the Sangh chief himself being present.

“At least history does not speak of any connection or synergy of thoughts between Netaji and RSS. But that cannot stop anyone from paying homage to this great freedom fighter. But considering the timing with two major elections coming up, the coinciding of the event with any political motive cannot be totally ruled out,” Das said.

Netaji’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose, who is himself a face of the BJP in West Bengal, said that this hypocrisy over the great Indian freedom fighter should come to an end now. “Either one should oppose Netaji or accept and practice his ideology of secularism and inclusivity true to its spirit,” he said.
