In a separate letter addressed to Ye and obtained by POLITICO, Krason said he had been told he was going to be terminated by Yiannopoulos but was resigning before that was made official. He also said he had recently learned of a “potentially serious criminal transaction” involving the Kanye 2020 campaign, saying that Yiannopoulos “submitted falsified invoices and for expenditures that would be deemed unlawful” in November 2022, before Krason assumed the role as treasurer. He added that there was too much “personal animosity” for a professional relationship with Yiannopoulos.

Reached by phone, Krason said he felt he needed to leave Ye’s campaign following the personnel changes and due to concerns about Yiannopoulos outlined in his letter to Ye.

Yiannopoulos denied any wrongdoing by himself or the Kanye 2020 campaign to POLITICO, saying he was not going to “give any credence or ridiculous, ridiculous and easily disproven claims.” He suggested the allegations were a “venomous” attempt by the former treasurer to lash out while leaving the campaign. Ye could not be reached for comment directly.

The resignation letter cited an expense for a digital asset where Yiannopoulos allegedly sought reimbursement from both Kanye 2020 and the campaign of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia for whom Yiannopoulos had previously worked, though not recently.

The Kanye 2020 campaign previously reported paying $40,000 to Yiannopoulos in December 2022 for “campaign wrap up services” as well as nearly $10,000 a month prior for a “domain transfer,” according to FEC filings. But there are no direct payments to Yiannopoulos in Greene’s campaign filings from that time. A spokesperson for Greene did not immediately respond to a POLITICO inquiry.

Ye previously ran for president in 2020. Despite initial concerns he could play a spoiler role, he won less than 68,000 votes nationwide, according to Ballotpedia. Last November, he dined with former President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago shortly after Trump’s 2024 campaign launch.

Kyle Cheney contributed to this report.

  • Indian-Australian sworn in as treasurer of NSW, takes oath on Bhagavad Gita

Indian-Australian sworn in as treasurer of NSW, takes oath on Bhagavad Gita

    [ad_1]

Melbourne: Indian-origin politician Daniel Mookhey took oath on the holy Bhagavad Gita as he was sworn in as the Treasurer of Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state by Governor Margaret Beazley in Sydney.

Mookhey was sworn in on Tuesday along with NSW Premier Chris Minns and six other ministers.

“Sworn in as Treasurer of the great state of NSW. Thank you to the people of NSW who entrusted us with this honour and privilege,” Mookhey said in a statement.

“I am incredibly honoured and humbled to be the first Australian Minister, state or federally, to take my oath of allegiance on the Bhagavad Gita. This is only possible because Australia is so open and so welcoming to the contributions of people like my parents, who I was thinking about a lot as I took my oath earlier today,” he said.

In 2015, Mookhey was elected by the Labor to replace Steve Whan in the NSW upper house — making him the state’s first politician of Indian background, and the first to take oath of allegiance on the Bhagavad Gita.

In 2019, he became the Shadow Minister for Finance and Small Business and Shadow Minister for the Gig Economy.

“This is a time to relax and enjoy before the period of really, really hard work starts again,” Governor Beazley said addressing the ministers.

Mookhey’s parents had migrated from Punjab to Australia in 1973.

Born in Blacktown suburb, Mookhey has three university degrees and has worked as a consultant to unions, charities and community groups.

The former Republican congressman, who stepped down to run for governor, would not confirm reports he’s interested in challenging Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Instead he said he simply wants to reenter politics.

Zeldin seemed eager to distance himself Santos and Marks, who are mired in allegations of campaign finance irregularities.

“The treasurer has something like close to 200 different accounts,” Zeldin said.

As for Santos, Zeldin said, “I don’t see how he is possibly going to regain the trust of his constituents.”

He stopped short of calling for the Long Island congressman’s resignation.

“Whether or not whatever his expiration date is as a member of the House, I don’t have that answer. He is seated.”

Marks has served as a campaign treasurer for Zeldin since his time in the state Senate over a decade ago.

She resigned from Santos’ campaign and affiliated committees late last month. The Federal Election Commission, along with federal and local law enforcement, is probing allegations of financial impropriety in Santos’ campaign.

Zeldin acknowledged he had a personal connection to Marks because their children go to school together on Long Island.

“Our interaction has been through Marks’ daughters,” he said, without elaborating.

Campaigns must have treasurers in order to accept donations, make disbursements and file mandated reports with the FEC. Tuesday is the deadline for campaigns to file year-end reports, which cover the period from late November through Dec. 31. Santos’ campaign had not yet filed his as of Tuesday afternoon, although his campaign has until midnight to do so.

Despite telling the FEC she had resigned from each of Santos’ affiliated committees effective Jan. 25, Marks was still listed as the treasurer on the termination report for a joint fundraising committee for Santos and Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) that bore her electronic signature dated Jan. 30. She was also on a year-end report for a recount committee Santos had formed in 2020.

Santos’ campaign finances have come under intense scrutiny in the past month after the congressman was caught faking much of his biography. Campaign finance complaints with the FEC have alleged that over $700,000 Santos initially reported as a personal loan to his campaign— despite a checkered personal financial history — may have actually represented an illegal straw donor scheme.

The New York congressman’s campaign also reported a series of improbable expenses, including dozens supposedly costing $199.99 — just one cent below the threshold that would require the campaign to keep receipts. As treasurer, Marks signed the forms reporting those expenses and the personal loans, although an amended filing last week no longer included a checked box indicating that money had come from Santos’ personal funds.

Santos has not been charged with a crime or faced enforcement action from the campaign finance regulator, although he is being investigated by local and federal prosecutors. The Washington Post reported last week that the Department of Justice asked the FEC to hold off on enforcement action against Santos as the department pursues its own probe.

Santos, who said Tuesday he would step aside from his committee assignments, dismissed questions about his FEC filings last week, telling reports in Washington he “[did] not touch any of [his] FEC stuff.”
