  • Snow Leopard Documented For The First Time Through ‘Camera Trap’ In South Kashmir

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Amid the ongoing population assessment of snow leopards in Jammu & Kashmir, the elusive animal has been officially documented in Kishtwar for the first time through a “camera trap” sighting, according to an official on Tuesday.

Dr M K Kumar, the Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu, said that despite being aware of the presence of snow leopards in the area, they captured the sight of the animal for the first time on three occasions through a camera trap. He added that on the first occasion, two snow leopards were spotted in a single frame, and on the second and third occasions, one was present.

Dr Kumar explained that J&K is part of the nationwide population assessment for snow leopards, and the assessment of the population of the animal is taken up through a multi-layered approach, which includes the assessment of habitats through questionnaires and landscape patterns. He further added that the population assessment of the animal started in 2021-22, and before drawing any conclusion, they would require one full winter and summer to make any valuations.

Dr Kumar said that currently, they cannot speculate on the population of snow leopards, as they are in the mid-process of documentation, and this process involves not only camera trapping but also multiple computer-based programming and parameters.

He further mentioned that as the snow leopard was sighted on camera in Kashmir in the upper reaches of the Baltal-Zojila area last year in November, there is high potential for the presence of snow leopards in the Tatakuti landscape in Poonch-Rajouri are. However, they have not done any research in that particular area.

It is pertinent to mention that in 2021, the wildlife protection authorities in Jammu & Kashmir started a population census of snow leopards as part of the nationwide population assessment of the elusive species. The census was carried out on the directions of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC). (KNO)

  • DeSantis could be walking into a general election trap on abortion

DeSantis could be walking into a general election trap on abortion

    [ad_1]

But a six-week ban pushes the outer boundary of anti-abortion rights proposals. And it could spell trouble for DeSantis among independents and suburban voters in a general election, if he makes it that far.

“We’re going to make him own this, and his agenda, everywhere he goes,” said a national Democratic operative granted anonymity to discuss party strategy. “Goes to Michigan? Abortion ban. Goes to Ohio next week? Abortion ban. And that will take different forms but we’ll hang this incredibly toxic abortion ban and his agenda around his neck with different tactics.”

The operative added that this is one of many points on which to attack DeSantis who has taken several stances on social issues that Democrats believe won’t sit well with swing voters.

A spokesman for DeSantis declined to comment for this story. But Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, told POLITICO that a six-week ban isn’t the millstone Democrats believe.

“Consensus is building across the country that once there’s a heartbeat, it’s a human being,” he said. “So the governor isn’t out of step at all. … In fact, it bolsters his standing.”

Though DeSantis has not formally entered the presidential race, the campaign to tie him to a six-week ban is already beginning, according to interviews with more than a dozen people from several battleground states.

Nascent plans include attack ads, knocking on doors in swing states where polling shows abortion has become a more prominent election issue since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, and registering voters throughout the country.

“Planned Parenthood advocacy and political organizations will make sure everyone knows his dangerous and radical record on abortion rights,” Jenny Lawson, vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund said in a statement. The organization is considering door-to-door canvassing, digital ads and direct mail, Olivia Cappello, a spokesperson said in a recent interview.

The Planned Parenthood network has poured millions of dollars into voter outreach in response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade last year. In the leadup to the decision, arms of the organization announced a $16 million ad campaign, and spent more than $50 million on the 2022 midterms a few months later.

The head of the much smaller Women’s Voices of Southwest Florida organization, who rallied against the ban in the state capital this week, has also promised an aggressive voter outreach effort.

“We have all vowed to go knock on doors and go to other states to let people know what DeSantis has done to Florida,” Sarah Parker of the organization said in an interview. “We don’t have a lot of money, but we’ll mobilize.”

DeSantis does not share that problem. A PAC supporting his likely candidacy boasted of raising $30 million several weeks ago, and he’s proven himself a prodigious fundraiser in the past — a benefit that’s helped him cement himself as the leading Republican alternative to Trump.

And for many on the right, particularly those miffed at Trump, DeSantis’ support of a six-week ban is proof that he is a more reliable ally in their fight to end the procedure nationwide.

“I’ve known him since he hit the ground in Congress,” Perkins said. “He, from the start, has been making very solid decisions on a host of policy issues, from religious freedom to economic issues.”

Florida’s six-week abortion ban received final legislative approval as the issue of abortion access once again dominates the headlines. The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday agreed to allow the abortion pill mifepristone to remain on the market but with restrictions that will hamper access to millions of people unless the Supreme Court intervenes.

Florida now joins at least 12 other states — including Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky and Louisiana — that have approved bans on abortions after six weeks, a point at which many people don’t yet know they’re pregnant.

“This bill is atrocious,” said Ryan Stitzlein, NARAL’s senior national political director. “This issue may ignite a small part of their primary base but it’s deeply unpopular with voters in this country. … We’re activating our more than 4 million members across the country. They’ll be making calls, writing, knocking on doors.”

Democrats’ confidence is rooted in both public polling that demonstrates little bipartisan appetite for such strict abortion bans as well as recent case studies. Five months after Republicans failed to deliver widespread victories in the midterm elections, a Democratic candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court defeated her opponent by 11 points in a race centered around abortion. Even moderate Republicans crossed the aisle to donate to her winning campaign.

“You should ignore national polls because that’s not how people win a presidential nomination. They win by winning each state and if you look at the bellwether states that Trump or DeSantis need to win, they have major, major problems on the issue of abortion,” political fundraiser Patrick Guarasci — who worked on the winning campaign of Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Janet Protasiewicz — said in an interview this week. “They’re being held hostage by their donors and their far-right-wing extremists.”

Guarasci said abortion ranked as the top issue in the recent election.

“Trump or DeSantis will have a hard time winning a presidential elections without some kind of answer to that question,” he added.

Several dozen opponents have been staging demonstrations in Tallahassee, even getting arrested in acts of civil disobedience. Though they knew they stood no chance of changing the course of the bill, they continued to gather as recently as Wednesday night to denounce it. State Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried warned DeSantis will “will not stop with Florida.”

DeSantis isn’t the only Republican who will face pressure for his stance on abortion. Democrats are certain to note that Trump appointed the justices who overturned Roe. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), on his second day of campaigning since announcing a presidential exploratory committee, pivoted, deflected and avoided specifics when repeatedly pressed on where he stood on federal abortion restrictions.

But unlike Trump or Scott, DeSantis will have signed legislation limiting access. Democrats don’t intend to let voters forget.

“This man is clearly wrong for Michigan,” Michigan Lieutenant Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, a Democrat, said on a conference call ahead of DeSantis’ recent visit to the state. “But he is also wrong for America. He will be burdened by his anti-choice, anti-woman, anti-reproductive freedom stances.”

CCTVs Installed Along LoC Helped Trap Poonch Infiltrators

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: An intruder was killed while two others were held in injured condition along with 17 kg narcotics along the Line Of Control (LOC) in Shahpur sector of Poonch district last night .

The CCTVs installed at sensitive areas on the LoC to track movement of infiltrators helped in elimination and arrest of the intruders, media reports said.

Movement of the three infiltrators was visible on CCTV cameras installed on the LoC thus helping army to keep a track of their movements.

“Around midnight, on April 8 the group crossed the LoC and started infiltrating into this side. The alert troops kept the movement of the infiltrating group under continuous observation. At 2 am, as the group approached the fence, the alert Army troops challenged them,” a spokesperson of defence ministry based in Jammu said.”

He said that as soon as the intruders started to run away, they were fired upon. One of them was shot dead while the other two managed to escape into a jungle taking advantage of the thick foliage, darkness and rocky outcrop.

“The area was immediately cordoned off to prevent their escape across the LoC and a search operation was launched at first light wherein the body of the slain intruder was recovered at the encounter site,” sources said.

In the search operatiom so far three bags with fourteen packets of narcotics weighing 17 kgs, Pkistani currency, some documents and eatables have been recovered.

  • The Republican Party is caught in an abortion trap

The Republican Party is caught in an abortion trap

    [ad_1]

    womens march abortion rights 95275

Going back to the 1990s, Gallup polling showed Americans divided roughly evenly between those who called themselves “pro-life” and “pro-choice.” Exit polls from the 1990s and 2000s showed voters who said abortion or “moral values” were most important to their vote supported Republican candidates in greater numbers.

But those surveys were conducted when a right to an abortion was law of the land. The Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision last year ending that constitutional right has exposed Americans’ broad opposition to the strict abortion bans adopted or proposed in GOP-controlled states. And it’s revealed that public surveys on the matter probably need more nuanced questions now.

There’s a long history of abortion polling. In the 2000 presidential election, the Los Angeles Times national exit poll found more George W. Bush voters rated abortion as one of their two most important issues than Al Gore voters, and voters were divided 50-50 on whether abortion should remain legal or be made illegal (though with exceptions).

That poll offered three options when measuring voter sentiment on abortion: keep it legal, make it illegal with exceptions or make it illegal with no exceptions.

Now, a four-point question probably best measures where Americans sit on the issue: legal in all cases, legal in most, illegal in all and illegal in most. The 2022 national exit poll used this device, finding that 29 percent of voters believed abortion should be “legal in all cases,” while another 30 percent thought it should be “legal in most cases.” That left 26 percent who thought it should be “illegal in most cases” and only 10 percent who said it should be “illegal in all cases.”

That leaves roughly six-in-10 voters supporting legal abortion in most cases — with the median voter supporting some restrictions — and just over a third who want it to be entirely or mostly illegal.

The Wisconsin case is instructive on this front. The 1849 ban that was triggered by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision makes it a felony to perform nearly all abortions (something close to the opinion held by only 10 percent of voters nationally). That ban is currently the subject of litigation, and voters were made very aware of the fact that whoever won Tuesday’s election would help decide the case, since it is almost certain to end up before the state Supreme Court.

That helps explain the breadth of Protasiewicz’s victory in a state where five of the past six major statewide races for president, Senate and governor have been decided by three points or fewer. The GOP-backed candidate, Dan Kelly, lost a state Supreme Court race by a similar margin in 2020, but that was driven largely by the Democratic presidential primary, which was held concurrently with the state Supreme Court election. (Then-President Donald Trump, who endorsed Kelly in that race, was the only named candidate appearing on the GOP primary ballot, giving Republicans little reason to turn out.)

Results from Tuesday’s election are still unofficial, but some of the county-level totals suggest younger and more liberal voters were highly motivated. Protasiewicz ran up huge numbers in counties with large colleges and universities, winning 82 percent of the vote in Dane County (University of Wisconsin-Madison), 73 percent in Milwaukee (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette University) and 54 percent in Winnebago County (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh). Those percentages were greater than Evers’ in all three counties, and turnout in Dane and Milwaukee was higher as a share of the statewide vote than in the 2022 midterms.

Beyond the numbers, abortion also struck a personal chord for some voters, according to Margie Omero, a Democratic pollster who conducted research around the race but didn’t work directly for Protasiewicz.

Omero described focus groups that became dominated by the abortion issue. “The number of times that people spoke really personally about their own medical crisis or an abortion they had when they were young, having a friend who had to leave the state,” Omero said, adding, “Every [focus] group had a story like this — where you had to pause the group because they were in tears, and everybody had to comfort that person.”

But nearly a year removed from POLITICO’s first report that the Supreme Court was poised to strike down Roe v. Wade, abortion isn’t going away as a political flashpoint. In another state, Florida, Republicans are debating their own crackdown on abortion, as GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis prepares to enter the presidential race. State legislators in Tallahassee are undaunted about sending a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy to DeSantis’ desk soon, replacing the 15-week ban the state enacted just last summer.

After the Wisconsin defeat — along with numerous others, including abortion-related ballot measures in red states — such a strict prohibition runs headlong into national public opinion. And it raises the question: How, if at all, are Republicans going to find a message that puts the party more in line with the median voter?

One tack: Paint Democrats as too permissive, willing to support “abortion on demand, for virtually any reason, up until the moment of birth,” as a press release from the Republican National Committee on Thursday put it.

But those attacks are largely falling flat. President Joe Biden has said repeatedly he supports the Roe v. Wade framework, which allowed states to impose modest restrictions on abortion later in pregnancies. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 1 percent of abortions in 2020 occurred after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

As an alternative, some conservatives are urging a more moderate stance. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) last year proposed a federal ban on abortions after 15 weeks — introducing limits in states where none currently exist, though states could implement more restrictive bans.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a possible 2024 presidential candidate himself, supports a 15-week ban similar to the current Florida law. The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List called it a “compassionate bill” and touted polling earlier this year showing a majority of voters in blue-leaning Virginia supported it. The group’s website features reams of public-opinion data showing popular support for 15-week bans.

Even though the issue has turned in their favor, Democrats are facing their own debates over how far to go in fighting to expand access to abortion, with some activists arguing the party should fight to eliminate any restrictions in ballot measures, even in the reddest of states.

But the data is now getting clearer. The Roe v. Wade framework — making abortion mostly legal, but allowing states to impose modest restrictions — is where the majority of American voters are. From the midterms, to Wisconsin, potentially to the 2024 elections, they’re continuing to punish the party that’s straying the furthest from that.

        • Gerard Piqué’s ‘trap’ for Shakira to spend more time with his children

          [ad_1]

The relationship of the Colombian singer Shakira with her former mother-in-law, Montserrat Bernabéu, the mother of Gerard Piqué, was very good while she was married to the former soccer player.

However, after the breakup of the couple, the tension has increased, something that was reflected in one of the songs in which Shakira has expressed her feelings.

“You left my mother-in-law as a neighbor, with the press at the door and the debt at the Treasury,” says the lyrics of ‘Sessions #53’, the song that Shakira recorded with the Argentine Bizarrap, and in which she also refers to the litigation that the Colombian has for an accusation of having defrauded the treasury between 2012 and 2014, in a debt that amounts to 14.5 million euros.

          Piqué and his mother’s strategy

Now, Spanish media reveal that Piqué would be cheating Shakira to spend more time with her children, after another long and tortuous process in which justice handed over custody of the two children to the Barranquillera.

According to the Vanitatis show portal, Shakira and Piqué would have discussed the treatment they are giving to Milan and Sasha and each one would be setting up some traps to find out if the other is committing an oversight in which they can be caught.

Shakira wears the sweatshirt designed by her niece.

In one of those attitudes, Piqué would have involved his mother, with the intention of spending more time with his children. Shakira’s ex-mother-in-law is still in charge of taking the children to some extracurricular activities.

Piqué would be taking advantage of this factor to take advantage of it and see Milan and Sasha more time. According to the same source, the strategy is that Montserrat picks up the children at home, walks a few meters with them and then, in a place where Shakira can no longer see them, makes the exchange so that they go with her father. .

Today, the relationship between Shakira and Montserrat is far from the affection and cordiality they had in the 12 years that they lasted as Piqué’s partner. Gone were the demonstrations of affection from the Colombian, who on more than one occasion published photos in which they were together.

The one who seems to stay away from Shakira’s new messages in his songs is Piqué himself, beyond the mockery of putting on a Casio watch and riding in a Renault Twingo, the lyrics of ‘Sessions #53’ were hardly known.

Vanitatis assures that Piqué is not offended by his ex-partner’s songs and is concentrating on his new relationship with Clara Chía Martí, and that, in addition, he is clear that he will not return to the Colombian.
