Sanaa: Overnight flash foods set off by heavy rain here in the Yemeni capital left traffic paralyzed.
The floodwaters, which started late Friday, once reached knee height in large parts of downtown Sanaa, inundating markets, lowrise homes, and shops through Saturday.
Some flooded main streets and tunnel entrances have been closed, Xinhua news agency reported.
On late Saturday, the water level has yet to recede in downtown’s Al-Tahrir Square, as well as Bab-Al-Yemen and Al-Sayelah in and outside the Old City of Sanaa, a UNESCO heritage site.
Residents were seen struggling to clear up water and sludge from their basements and shops while rescuing their belongings.
Yemen’s national weather service issued flash flood warnings for various provinces as a rise in precipitation is forecasted with the start of the rainy season.
Last rainy season, at least 10 multi-storeyed buildings in Sanaa were collapsed and dozens more in the Old City damaged due to heavy rains.
Banihal/Jammu: An army vehicle suffered damage in shooting of stones from a hillock near the recently opened T-5 tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Sunday but no personnel were injured, officials said.
Ramban Deputy Commissioner Mussarat Islam took serious note of the matter and asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to get the vulnerable zone technically assessed so that immediate protection measures are taken to protect the lives of passengers travelling on the 270 km highway the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country.
The 880-metre T-5 tunnel was thrown open for traffic on March 16, providing much-needed relief to commuters as it bypassed the most vulnerable stretch of Panthyal which was infamous for the frequent shooting of stones from the hillock.
The officials said an Army convoy was moving through the tunnel when the rocks started coming down from the hillock, resulting in damage to one of the luxury vehicles. However, all its occupants escaped unhurt.
The shooting stones continued on both sides of the tunnel for quite some time, resulting in disruption of the traffic, they said, adding no one was injured in the incident.
In a communication to the NHAI, the Ramban deputy commissioner said the massive shooting stone activity near the mouth of South Portal of Tunnel T-5 (Tube 1) poses a grave risk to the commuters if no remedial measures are immediately taken.
“You are advised to get the vulnerable zone technically assessed so that immediate protection measures are taken to protect the lives of passengers travelling on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (now NH-44) as well as Tunnel T-5,” Islam said.
He said the Panthyal stretch on NH-44 has brought huge respite to the travellers and also helped in better regulation of traffic in absence of jams.
SRINAGAR: Following the horrible road accident on Boulevard near SKICC on Friday which resulted in the on-spot death of a 20-year-old youth, Traffic Police Srinagar on Saturday said special teams have been formed to identify individuals involved in stunt biking.
Senior Superintendent Police Traffic for Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah said that the multilevel measures to curb stunts and rash riding by two-wheelers are being taken besides identifying the boys involved in it.
“It is not restricted to Srinagar only; there are some boys from other districts who come to Srinagar for these stunts. We are in the process of identifying them and are compiling data on it,” he said.

“We are going to come down heavily on the repeated and habitual offenders,” the officer said, adding, “We have summoned a few and are trying to reach out to the maximum to counsel them afresh.”
Speaking about Friday’s accident, the officer said the incident is “painful”. “I have been urging the parents to be more sensitive in giving two-wheelers or any other vehicle to their children.”
“In addition to law enforcement, parents play a crucial role in preventing these types of situations. If they want to offer their children two-wheelers or other vehicles, they should make sure they have all the necessary documentation, safety equipment,” he said.
Srinagar traffic police said last week that they now have specialized “Speed Radar Guns” to measure the speed of moving cars. They claimed that the technology will assist them to stop high-speed, stunt biking, and reckless driving by vehicles. (KNO)

Kochi: Angry protesters, including children and women, from 10 villages in the hilly district of Idukki on Thursday are out on the streets, blocking traffic on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi highway.
This highway passes through Idukki and the protesters are unhappy with the Kerala High Court’s Wednesday decision involving wild tusker ‘Arikomban’ and two other rogue elephants causing destruction to life and properties of people in these affected villages.
The Kerala High Court on Wednesday warned the state of strict action if it found that the area in the Idukki district where these wild tuskers, including ‘Arikomban’, were roaming had been an elephant habitat before the tribals were resettled there.
The division bench, according to the protesters, instead of helping them, called for records and reports on the resettlement of tribal people in the area back in 2000. The court said, “If it was an elephant habitat, you had no business resettling people there and putting them in danger. The court said that resettling people in an elephant habitat was the root of the entire problem.”
“We will examine it. If it was an elephant habitat, then your policymakers went way off the board. If people were resettled there despite being aware of this fact, we will come down heavily on those responsible.
“Errors in history can be corrected later in time. We need to find whether the mistake happened and if yes, correct it,” the bench said, and declined to issue any direction in the interim for capture and captivity of the wild tuskers, including ‘Arikomban’.
The feature of Arikomban (translated in Malayalam as Aari-rice and Komban-tusker) is it attacks ration shops and houses for rice.
The villagers are unhappy with the court decision as it said that it will constitute a five-member committee that would decide whether to capture the wild elephant and turn it into a captive tusker or relocate it to interior areas of the forest.
It further said that till the panel came to a decision by the next week, the tusker was not to be captured and put in captivity, but allowed tranquilising for a limited purpose of radio-collaring it to track its movements.
“We are not going to stop our protests and we will do it, only when some concrete things come out, as we are fed up living in constant fear. Lives are lost and properties are being destroyed,” said a group of angry protesters.
Meanwhile, state Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran said the people have the right to protest as the Court’s directive complicated things.
“The state will go forward exploring all the legal remedies and it will seek legal recourse,” said Saseendran.
SRINAGAR: In order to curb high-speed stunt biking and rash driving of vehicles, Traffic Police Srinagar on Monday said they have received a few ‘Speed Radar Guns’, a specialized device to assess the speed of moving vehicles.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for City Traffic, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah while speaking to the media at his office said the department was short of the equipment to measure the speed of moving vehicles, and now they have received an inventory of a few ‘Speed Radar Guns’.
” The device would be used to crack down on high-speed stunt biking,” he said.
“We would be using the speed radar guns, which would assist us in detecting the people who drive erratically and at high speeds,” he said, adding that in the coming months, the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is going to be activated. The installation of multiple cameras will automatically detect and minimize traffic violations, he added.
Talking about Sunday’s Parimpora incident in which a group of boys riding two-wheelers was seen allegedly harassing a family and said to be involved in stunt biking, the SSP said, “There was a swift action by the Parimpora police station, and the action will serve as an indication to those who are involved in these kinds of acts. Law is very clear about it and nobody can escape.”
Shah said the initiative on underage driving and rash driving was taken last year but the effort can only be successful if parents cooperate.
He urged parents to not allow minors to drive either four-wheelers or two-wheelers, and those who do so should make sure their children have all the required paperwork, including a driver’s license, and that they are wearing helmets when riding two-wheelers. (KNO)
