Heavy traffic snarls in parts of Delhi as AAP protests against CBI summons to Kejriwal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Heavy traffic snarls were witnessed in several parts of the national capital on Sunday following protests by AAP workers against the summoning of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the CBI in the excise policy case.

Traffic jams were witnessed in the protest sites of Anand Vihar Terminal, ITO Chowk, Mukarba Chowk Peera Garhi Chowk, Lado Sarai Chowk, Crown Plaza Chowk, Dwarka More Sec 6 and Sec 2 Chauraha, Pecific Wala Chowk Subhash Nagar More, Prem Wari Chauraha Ring Road, New Delhi Railway Station Ajmeri Gate Side, Bara Hanuman Mandir, Karol Bagh Chowk, IIT Crossing, ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Raj Ghat and NH 24 Near Murga Mandi Gazipur.

A serpentine queue of vehicles unable to move an inch due to the AAP protest was seen.

Police officials, along with the traffic unit deployed at multiple locations, are persuading protesters to move from the roads and allow vehicle traffic.

“We have deployed sufficient force at these locations. But protesters are on a sit-in so we are persuading them to move because they are causing heavy traffic jams. If they are still not cooperating, we are removing them from the spot,” a senior police official said.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has stepped up security outside the CBI headquarters as Kejriwal appeared before the agency on Sunday in connection with alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped excise policy, officials said.

The force has deployed over 1,000 security personnel, including paramilitary forces, outside the CBI headquarters and section 144 has also been imposed in the area to ensure no gathering of more than four persons takes place, they said.

Security has also been tightened outside the Aam Aadmi Party office in Rouse Avenue, officials said.

An adequate number of barricades have also been placed on the streets at both these places to ensure AAP workers and supporters do not create any trouble, a senior police official said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had summoned Kejriwal at its office to answer questions of the investigation team as a witness in the excise police case, according to a notice issued by the CBI.

Kejriwal’s deputy Manish Sisodia was arrested last month in the case.

The AAP has called the case a conspiracy against its leaders.

CBI officials have said they asked Kejriwal to appear on a Sunday as the offices in the area remain closed.

The agency adopted the same strategy when Sisodia was called at the agency headquarters, where he was grilled for eight hours before being taken into custody.

The allegations relate to the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22. The CBI is probing allegations of bribes paid by liquor traders to get licences.

The AAP has strongly refuted these charges, but its government later scrapped the policy.

“It was further alleged that irregularities were committed, including modifications in excise policy, extending undue favours to the licensees, waiver/reduction in license fee, the extension of L-1 licence without approval, etc,” said a CBI spokesperson after the FIR was filed on August 17, 2022.

The CBI filed its charge sheet against seven accused on November 25 last year.

It alleged in the charge sheet that the excise policy was framed in a manner to promote cartelisation and monopoly at the wholesale level.

Gadkari bats for public transport, says road traffic generates 40% air pollution

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Making a strong case for improving and promoting the use of public transport, Union Minister for Highways Nitin Gadkari said that road transport alone is responsible for 40 percent of the air pollution in India, here on Thursday.

Addressing the 11th Biennial International Conference on Ports, Shipping and Logistics, Gadkari said that the government is implementing various measures to promote public transport as ecology and environment are the ‘highest priority’.

He referred to the double-decker buses in Mumbai and Bengaluru bus services as examples of these measures, and road projects worth Rs 65,000 crore underway in and around Delhi.

    MS Education Academy

Besides, approval has been given for 260 ropeways and cable cars and other public transport modes to reduce road traffic congestion and air pollution, the Minister said.

The Centre is also trying to construct electric highways, and along with electric vehicles, make use of vehicles with flex engines.

Since hydrogen is the fuel of the future, there should be no hassles running trucks and buses using methanol as fuel even in Mumbai to reduce fuel costs and pollutants, Gadkari said.

The government has also started 36 green highway projects and paid more than the market value as compensation for the lands being acquired for these ventures, removing all hurdles in this process.

“We are working to reduce logistics cost to 9 per cent — which is currently 14-16 per cent — by 2024. Better roads and lower logistic costs will help in enhancement of trade business and industry,” said Gadkari.

He said that 5-6 logistics parks will be set up in Maharashtra, and the work of construction of dry ports at Jalna and Wardha in the state has been completed and now the work of construction of similar dry ports in Nashik and Pune is being undertaken.

Gadkari urged that if water transport can be launched between Mumbai and Goa, the entire picture of transportation in this region will change as its very cost-effective compared with road and rail, and if alternative fuels are used, the cost of water transport will further reduce.

The Vikravandi-Kumbakonam road was seized in protest by Dalits of Melpathi village near Koliyanur in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district after they were disallowed by upper-caste Hindus from entering a temple.

According to reports, the incident took place on Friday night when three Dalits- Kandhan, Kathiravan, and Karpagam – were allegedly told to back off as they tried to enter the Draupadi Amman temple where a festival was going on.

A heated argument took place between the two parties. The three men were beaten up by upper-caste Hindus and later admitted to the Villupuram government medical college hospital in  Mundiyampakkam for treatment.

As the incident came to light, nearly 100 angry Dalits picketed the Vikravandi-Kumbakonam road demanding the arrest of the attackers under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

  • Hotel occupancy goes up to 80 pc in Shimla, gives rise to traffic, parking issues

Hotel occupancy goes up to 80 pc in Shimla, gives rise to traffic, parking issues

    [ad_1]

Shimla: Occupancy in hotels and homestays has increased to about 80 per cent as tourists from the neighbouring states are making a beeline to Shimla to enjoy the long weekend under the bracing climate.

The influx of tourists in the hill town is causing traffic jams on the main roads, including the Shimla-Kalka National Highway and long queues of vehicles moving at a snail’s pace are causing inconvenience to both the locals and the vacationers.

Vice President of Shimla Hotel and Restaurant Association Prince Kukreja told PTI that the hotel occupancy has increased to about 80 per cent in Shimla and the peak summer tourist season will start from April 15 onwards till June 15.

    MS Education Academy

As temperatures have started rising in the plains the visitor rush is picking up ahead of tourist season.

Vehicles parked on the roads and in front of hotels by the tourists coming without advance booking coupled with construction going on under the Shimla Smart City project have become major traffic bottlenecks.

A number of parking lots with single entry and exit are obstructing the smooth flow of traffic as a large number of vehicles are parked outside already packed parking spaces, says Haryana residents Ashwani and Sonika, who are visiting the hill town.

The occupancy is about 80 per cent but due to heavy rush, the vehicles entering the town from Chandigarh side are generally diverted via new ISBT, affecting the occupancy of hotels located between Victory tunnel and Auckland tunnel, said president of Tourism Industry Stakeholders Association M K Seth.

The situation could be better if the traffic is regulated from Shoghi, 13 km from the main town, Seth said.

The majority of the vacationers coming from the neighbouring states are walk-in tourists and the problem of parking has once again become alive, says hotelier Sushant Nag.

The government is projecting Himachal as a favoured tourist destination and inviting tourists but the parking facility is inadequate even for locals and visitors are harassed and penalised for parking vehicles on the roadside, said Nitish, a tourist from Ludhiana.

The Tourism sector which was the worst hit during Covid 19 pandemic in Himachal is bouncing back and an 87 per cent recovery was witnessed in 2022 with tourist arrival crossing the 1.51-crore mark as compared to 1.72 crores in the pre-Covid year 2019.

As many as 1.51 crore tourists including 29,333 foreigners visited Himachal in 2022 and the twin districts of Kullu and Shimla accounted for 36 per cent of the total tourist arrival.
