Sambalpur violence: 79 persons arrested, normalcy returning to town

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police arrested 79 persons in connection with various violence incidents that occurred in Sambalpur town since April 12, police said on Sunday.

Ahead of the Hanuman Jayanti (April 14), a motorcycle procession was organised by Hanuman Jayanti Samanyoya Samiti members, Bajarang Dal workers etc on April 12 evening. During the rally, there were clashes between two communities in Sambalpur town leaving several people and police injured.

Violence incidents again occurred in the town on April 14 when Hanuman Jayanti procession was going on in the western Odisha town. Few shops were torched and ransacked on April 14 night.

    MS Education Academy

Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP), B. Gangadhar said, “We have arrested another 30 people against the case registered for creating violence in the town. So far, a total of 79 persons have been arrested in connection with the violence incidents.”

The number of arrested persons will increase further as identification of other people is going on through CCTV footage and video footage, he said.

“Many people involved in both incidents were arrested while some of their leaders fled Sambalpur. We have sent teams to catch them,” the SP said.

The seizure of stones indicates that it was pre-planned and action will be taken as per law, he informed.

Meanwhile, Odisha DGP Sunil Bansal rushed to the violence-hit town on Saturday. He reviewed the situation with senior police officials in Sambalpur on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Bansal said, “Though no major violence happened in the city after the untoward incident happened on April 14, we have imposed curfew as a precautionary measure.”

There was no violence incident reported on Saturday during the relaxation period. On Sunday, some more relaxation was given and it passed peacefully, he said.

Stating that the situation is continuously improving, the DGP said, “I hope, if it continues, we will remove curfew and bring normalcy in the city in next two days.”

As some examinations were there in the town on Sunday, extra relaxation in curfew has been given to them. As per information available, the examinations are going smoothly. The curfew will be again relaxed when the examinees will come out from the exam halls, Bansal informed.

“We are continuing the process for identification of the persons who were involved in the violence and many people have been arrested. Further investigation is going on,” he added.

The DGP made it clear that strict action will be taken against all those who are involved in the violence incidents.

He appealed to people not to remain in panic and cooperate with the district administration to bring normalcy in Sambalpur.

    [ad_1]

Kota :Traders in Kanwas town here shut their shops on Thursday to protest against two firing incidents in the market.

Two bike-borne men fired in the air at two different places in the market on Wednesday afternoon.

Station House Officer of Kanwas Police Station Kalyan Singh said the two have been identified as Shakeel and Atique, residents of Kanwas.

Prima facie, the shots were fired to terrorise the traders as no one was targeted. The real motive will be known only after interrogation of the duo, he said.

Holding the police responsible for the incidents, the traders, led by former local BJP MLA Heeralal Nagar, said the market would remain shut till the accused are not arrested.

Police have assured the traders that the culprits would be nabbed by Friday.

An FIR has been lodged against the duo following a complaint by traders, Koshal Soni, Madhusudan, and Himanshu, police said.

Soni is a local BJP leader and former panchayat samiti member.

Police personnel in large numbers have been deployed in the town to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident, officials said.

The traders accompanied by activists of Hindu organisations also submitted a memorandum to the SDM demanding the immediate arrest of the accused.

According to police, Shakeel and Atique have a criminal background.

Atique has three cases, including attempt to murder and Arms Act, lodged against him, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rameshwar Parihar said.

  • Joshimath town is now safe for people: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

Joshimath town is now safe for people: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

    [ad_1]

Dehradun: Joshimath is now safe and there is no fear in people’s minds, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Saturday as he flagged off the two-day Auli marathon from the subsidence-hit town.

The event is being organised in the temple town to send the message that Joshimath is safe.

Joshimath hit the headlines in January when huge cracks in houses, fields and roads caused by land subsidence forced people to vacate their homes and shift to relief centres.

    MS Education Academy

More than 300 athletes from different states are taking part in the marathon being organised by the Uttarakhand Ski Mountaineering Association and the Sky Running Association.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on the premises of the Narsingh and Nav Durga temple, Dhami said, “It is a matter of pride for us that a marathon of such a grand scale begins from Joshimath. We are trying to take several other measures to promote tourism in Uttarakhand.”

Everything is now safe in the town and there is no fear in the minds of people, he said.

“An atmosphere of fear about Joshimath was created in the initial days of the problem. But everything is normal here. The state government has taken positive steps to overcome the problem.

“As a result, more than 11.30 lakh people have already registered for the Char Dham Yatra, which begins on April 22,” the chief minister said.

It seems that the number of pilgrims this time will break the record influx seen last year, he added.

Around 46 lakh people visited Uttarakhand for the yatra last year.

“Auli and Joshimath are absolutely safe now and ready to welcome devotees coming for the annual pilgrimage. The marathon is held in Joshimath is proof of this,” Dhami said.

Athletes from Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, among others, are taking part in the sky running and the sky ultra race being organised as part of the two-day marathon.

Good compensation given to affected people: CM

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday said the compensation being given to the affected people in subsidence-hit Joshimath is the best one possible and they should avail of it as soon as possible.

“We have decided the best compensation for the affected people in Joshimath. Those who can avail of the compensation should do so soon,” Dhami said.

He said this while meeting the affected people in Joshimath.

For people who do not have their own piece of land, prefabricated houses have been built, the chief minister said.

He also undertook a spot inspection of the prefabricated houses being constructed on the Auli road.

Giving an update on relief operations underway at Joshimath, Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana said 167 families have been kept in relief camps and compensation worth Rs 10.46 crore has been distributed among affected landowners.

Dhami was in Joshimath on Saturday to flag off the two-day Auli marathon to send the message of a safe Joshimath across the country.

Oldest pearling town discovered in United Arab Emirates

    [ad_1]

Abu Dhabi: A group of archaeologists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the discovery of the oldest pearling town is located on Siniyah Island in Umm Al Quwain, local media reported.

This city, which covers an area of 12 hectares, flourished during the period between the end of the sixth century and the middle of the eighth century AD, that is, before the emergence of Islamic civilization, according to the Department of Tourism and Antiquities in Umm Al Quwain.

The researchers’ findings revealed on Monday that the city was one of the “largest surviving urban agglomerations ever” in what is today the UAE.

It is believed that thousands of residents lived in this city, and many of them depended on the pearl industry.

The houses were built from the local beach rocks, using traditional materials available in the surrounding environment of the city, while the roofs were made of palm trunks.

“This is a discovery of major significance for the history of Umm Al Quwain, the UAE and the wider Arabian Gulf,”

“For the first time, we have the opportunity to study a pearling town from over 1,300 years ago,” he added.

Sheikh Majid bin Saud Al Mualla, chairman of the emirate’s Department of Tourism and Archaeology, told The National News.

Pearl hunting has been an essential part of the country’s heritage for more than 7,000 years, in addition to being a source of livelihood.
