North Karnataka: Friends-turned-foes make it tough for BJP

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The BJP is going to face a litmus test in the 2023 state assembly elections in the north Karnataka region considered its bastion. Fingers are crossed over how the people of this region would react to the saffron partys experiments.

The voters of the region played a major role in elevating the BJP to power by rallying behind former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa who was asked to step down. The latest episodes of the exit of former CM Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi, both Lingayat leaders, who are claiming humiliation by BJP leaders and joined the Congress party have forced the ruling party to do fire fighting.

North Karnataka, comprising both Kittur and Kalyan Karnataka regions, has 13 districts with 90 assembly seats. Presently the BJP holds 52 seats, the Congress 32 and the JD (S) 6 seats.

    MS Education Academy

The region comprises Belagavi, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Gadag, Dharwad, Haveri, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Vijayanagar and Bellary districts. There is a direct fight between the Congress and the BJP in most of the places. The JD (S) is hopeful of garnering seats in double digits.

The BJP is facing a challenge from the Kalyan Karnataka Rajya Paksha (KKRP) launched by mining baron-turned-politician Janardhan Reddy. The BJP has maintained a distance from him following allegations against him, leading to his exit from the party.

His party is likely to affect the BJP vote bank in the Hyderabad Karnataka region known as the Kalyan Karnataka region. The fight will become intense in Bellary, Raichur, Koppal, Yadgir and Vijayanagar districts.

Secondly, Srirama Sena founder Pramod Muthalik has vowed to defeat the BJP. As he has considerable influence among Hindu activists of the north Karnataka region, the development is likely to prove a setback for the BJP.

When compared to the BJP, the Congress which bagged 32 seats in the last elections, has become ambitious this time. The Panchamasali agitation and exit of influential Lingayat leaders Shettar and Savadi will break the vote bank of the BJP. Sources in the Congress say that their leader Rahul Gandhi is repeatedly claiming the party will cross 150 seats in the elections because of hints of getting a major chunk of seats from this region.

The elevation of Mallikarjun Kharge to the post of AICC president would also help to get the votes of the oppressed classes in the region, which are in significant numbers.

Both the BJP and the Congress are focused on winning the maximum number of seats from Belagavi district which has 18 assembly seats. The BJP won 13 seats and the Congress only five seats in the last elections. Locals say that this time the Congress will win at least 12 seats.

Talking to IANS, political analyst Basavaraj Sulibhavi said that the Lingayat community is upset with the treatment meted out to Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi. With this development, about 20 per cent of the Lingayat votes will shift.

He explained that if the Congress party utilizes them across north Karnataka and they go on narrating their story of humiliation in the region, it will tilt the Lingayat votes to a large extent. “The people of the region already have the feeling that their leaders are being used and trashed by the BJP,” he added.

Sulibhavi stated that till date the Lingayat community is standing firmly behind Yediyurappa. In the last elections 90 per cent of the Lingayat votes went to the BJP. This time it won’t happen and there will be a divide of at least 30 per cent votes.

“The BJP initially gathers strength from communities. Its main agenda is Hindutva. The party has used the Madiga, Bhovi, Lamani communities which come under Scheduled Caste along with Lingayats. But it is not easy in Karnataka, if they want to propagate Hindutva. The people are more connected to their communities,” he stated.

Ashok Chandaragi, activist and president of the Belagavi District Kannada Organizations Action Committee, told IANS that the BJP will have to face anti-incumbency in the rural parts of the region. With the joining of Shettar and Savadi, the Congress will win more than 40 seats out of the 56 assembly seats in the Kittur Karnataka region.

Another significant factor is that no party has returned to power in Karnataka after 1985. The Janata Dal government under the leadership of late Ramkrishna Hegde managed to win 139 seats. Yediyurappa was removed unceremoniously. If age was the factor, then why are BJP leaders bringing him to the forefront now, questions Ashok Chandaragi.

The Lingayat community which is economically and socially forward can see that their leadership is being used only for campaigning and canvassing. Shettar belongs to the Banajiga sub caste and the BJP will see its effect in at least 25 constituencies in Bijapur, Dharwad, Kalaburagi and Bagalkot districts, he said.

The BJP has to remember that if not for 56 senior leaders from the Janata parivar, it would have never come to power. The Janata parivar’s vote shifted to the BJP. The BJP is now thinking of emerging victorious on PM Modi’s image, he maintained.

As the state is inching closer to elections, the situation is becoming tougher for all political parties in Karnataka. It is to be seen whether the Congress will capture the region or PM Modi will tilt the voters towards the saffron party. Underdog JD (S) is also hoping to make its mark. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann has also stated that the AAP party is receiving greater support in the north Karnataka region.

  • Kumaraswamy up against tough opponent in home base Channapatna

Kumaraswamy up against tough opponent in home base Channapatna

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who is leading the JD(S) from the front and is countering the campaign blitzkrieg of the Congress and the BJP, is facing stiff competition in Channapatna constituency.

The constituency is set to witness a close fight between Kumaraswamy and BJP leader C.P. Yogeshwara. Channapatna was represented by Yogeshwara in 1999. Later, he won the seat as a Congress candidate in the 2004 and 2008 assembly elections.

After joining the BJP during ‘Operation Lotus’, he lost the by-election in 2009 against JD (S) candidate Ashwath M.C. He managed to win back the seat in the 2011 bypoll as a BJP candidate. In 2013, he contested from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and won against Kumaraswamy’s wife Anita Kumaraswamy. He got 80,099 votes while Anita polled 73,635 votes.

    MS Education Academy

In the 2018 assembly elections Yogeshwara contesting as a BJP candidate, was defeated by Kumaraswamy. Yogeshwara managed to get 66,465 votes and Kumarswamy polled 87,995 votes. Sources said that Kumaraswamy chooses to contest from Channapatna to end the political career of Yogeshwara.

Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy is contesting from the neighbouring Ramnagar constituency.

Channapatna constituency comprises 31 wards of the city. The constituency has 2,17,606 voters. Muslims comprise 42.96 per cent of the voters and Hindus make up 55.66 per cent.

The fight has become a close contest with the BJP high command’s decision to focus on the old Mysuru region. Channapatna, which elected Congress candidates, has become a bastion of the JD (S). Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s family has taken it as a matter of prestige to win from here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have made repeated visits to south Karnataka and appealed to the voters to root out the JD (S), branding it as a party which practices dynastic politics. The party is planning to organize mega rallies and campaigns in the constituency in the coming days.

The results will tell how deep the saffron party has managed to put down roots in south Karnataka. With polarization of votes on the basis of religion following the hijab crisis and the call to boycott Muslim traders, Muslims are standing firmly with the JD (S). Kumaraswamy will attract a major chunk of Vokkaliga votes.

The task of Yogeshwara is to polarize all Hindu votes towards the BJP and keep the Vokkaliga votes intact. Knowing well the uphill task, Yogeshwara had started intense campaigning in the constituency a long time back.

Kumaraswamy is focusing on a state tour and declared that national parties will have to come to his door after the elections. Yogeshwara has proclaimed that he will win against Kumaraswamy.

Oman goes tough on expats who dress ‘indecently’

    [ad_1]

Muscat: Oman has warned expatriates to avoid dressing indecent ways, particularly during the month of Ramzan.

The authorities have advised both men and women should dress modestly as a sign of respect for the cultural norms of the local population.

Expatriates are encouraged to abide by the dress code, customs and traditions of Oman to avoid offending the local population as well as comply with the law.

The Times of Oman issued a report stating that Amer Salem Al-Hasani, representative of Bausher Wilayat and member of the Municipal Council of Muscat Governorate, urging stricter enforcement of the dress code reserved for expatriates.

This call to action comes after several instances of non-compliance were identified.

“Wearing an indecent dress in public places is not an expression of personal freedom because it offends others and does not reflect our culture and identity,” he said.

According to the Omani Penal Code, promulgated by Royal Decree 7/2018, whoever appears in public in a way that harms public morals or contradicts the traditions and customs of society can face a prison sentence of between one and three months and a fine of between 100 and 300 Omani riyals.

Punjab govt won’t hesitate in taking tough decisions on Amritpal Singh: Delhi CM

    [ad_1]

Jalandhar: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab will not hesitate in taking tough decisions to maintain law and order as he asserted that those who were trying to spoil the atmosphere in the state are on the run.

Kejriwal’s remarks come in the wake of Punjab police action against radical preacher Amritpal Singh and elements of an outfit, headed by him, named ‘Waris Punjab De.’

AAP supremo Kejriwal along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was in Jalandhar, where the crackdown on the Khalistan sympathizer began on Saturday, to lay the foundation stone of Sri Guru Ravidas Bani Adhyan Centre at Dera Sachkhand Ballan here.

Addressing the gathering, Kejriwal said whoever tries to disturb peace in Punjab will not be spared. “In the past few days, you saw how some people tried to disturb peace in Punjab,” he said.

“We do not have to allow the atmosphere to be spoiled at any cost,” he said, adding, “We have to maintain peace, law, and order in Punjab.”

Kejriwal said the Mann government took tough decisions to maintain peace in the state.

“Sometimes, tough decisions have to be taken. But if our AAP government in Punjab under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann will have to take tough decisions then we will not hesitate from taking them,” he added.

“Mann saab took tough decisions, but without a bullet being fired and blood being shed peace is maintained in entire Punjab today,” he said.

Amritpal Singh has been on the run after the police crackdown began. Several images and videos have shown him taking multiple vehicles to dodge police. The Punjab government has slapped the strictest National Security Act against him and some of his associates.

While the fugitive’s whereabouts are still unknown, Punjab police say efforts are on to nab him.

HireMee launches AI employability test for graduates in tough job market

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid growing layoffs especially in the tech industry, talent acquisition and talent management platform HireMee on Friday announced an employability test for graduates to gain an edge with prospective employers.

The HireMee’s 100-minute online test is a proven diagnostic assessment to calibrate employability skills of youth.

Engineering graduates of the 2023 batch and earlier can take the test from the comfort of their home or college on a computer or a mobile phone through a downloadable app.

The employability test, tailored for a test taker’s area of engineering specialisation, is backed by artificial intelligence (AI) to check impersonation and to prevent test takers seeking external help.

“The test is a great opportunity for job aspirants to get differentiated based on their employability scores and stand out when shared with hundreds of employers who honour the HireMee scores,” said Venkatraman Umakanth, Senior Vice President and Head, HireMee.

The HireMee employability score generated after a scientific assessment on nine different parameters — including verbal, logic, and quantitative aptitude, personality traits, communication, computer skills, and core technical competencies.

After completing the assessment, offered at no cost, the test takers can upload three 20-second videos to cover “About Me”, “My Skills” and “Area of Interest” that demonstrate a candidate’s aspirations and communication skills.

A hiring company’s recruiting teams can filter candidates with scorecards matching their requirements and video profiles.

“The scientifically comprehensive assessment helps companies to identify the most suitable candidates based on their specified psychometric or personality cut off scores and put them through the next steps of recruitment process thereby reducing their recruitment cycle time and associated cost,” Venkatraman added.

Companies such as BOSCH, Essar Oil & Gas, IndiaMART, Instakart, MRF, PlanetSpark and Vee Technologies have partnered with HireMee to assess engineering graduates before hiring them for the company’s operations.

In addition, nearly 500 companies use the HireMee platform for talent acquisition.

Will take tough action to stop vulgarity on OTT in the name of creativity: I&B Minister

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Taking a tough stand on complaints against content on OTT platforms, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said vulgarity and abusive language was not acceptable in the name of creativity.

Addressing a press conference here, Thakur said the government had taken a serious view on complaints of vulgarity and abusive language in content on OTT platforms and will not hesitate to take tough action to stop this trend.

“These platforms were given freedom for creativity and not for obscenity and when one crosses the limit, then hurling abuses in the name of creativity cannot be accepted at all,” Thakur said.

“If there is a need to change the rules, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will not hesitate. It will take tough action to stop vulgarity and abusive language,” the minister said.

In January, Thakur had batted for creative autonomy and said adequate safeguards were in place to monitor content on OTT platforms.

“Creativity should not be reined in, it should have autonomy. But it should not be too much that anything can be shown. We have kept adequate provisions and till date they are working fine,” Thakur had said on January 15 while participating in the 75th anniversary celebrations of ‘Panchajanya’ weekly, the RSS mouthpiece.

On Sunday, Thakur said there was a three-stage mechanism to deal with content on OTT platforms.

“As per the current procedure, producers have to address complaints about the content first and then they go to their association. When a complaint reaches the government (I&B department), strict action is taken as per rules,” he said.

  • U.S. inflation eases but stays high, putting Fed in tough spot

U.S. inflation eases but stays high, putting Fed in tough spot

    [ad_1]

That is a sharp shift from just a week ago, when Chair Jerome Powell suggested to a Senate committee that if inflation didn’t cool, the Fed could raise its benchmark interest rate by a substantial half-point at its meeting March 21-22. When the Fed raises its key rate, it typically leads to higher rates on mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and many business loans.

When measured against prices a year ago, inflation has been easing for eight months. In February, consumer prices climbed 6% from 12 months earlier, down from January’s 6.4% year-over-year increase and well below a recent peak of 9.1% in June. Yet it remains far above the Fed’s 2% annual inflation target. Core prices in February rose 5.5% from 12 months ago, down slightly from 5.6% in January.

Inflation pressures remain entrenched in much of the economy. Rents, grocery prices and the cost of hotels, restaurants and airplane flights have all been surging as more Americans seek housing and spend money on traveling, dining out and attending entertainment events.

Jan Hatzius, chief economist at Goldman Sachs, said Goldman now thinks the Fed’s policymakers will pause their rate increases next week. Goldman had previously predicted a quarter-point hike. In a note to clients, Hatzius noted that the Fed, for now, appears even more focused on calming the banking sector and the financial markets than on fighting inflation.

“We would be surprised if, just one week after going to great lengths to support financial stability, policymakers risked undermining their efforts by raising interest rates again,” Hatzius wrote in a separate note Monday.

If the Fed does pause its rate hikes this month, Hatzius predicted, it will likely resume them when it next meets in May. Ultimately, he still expects the Fed to raise its key rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, to about 5.4% this year, up from the current 4.6%.

The Fed may get some unintentional help in its inflation fight from the aftereffects of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and New York-based Signature Bank. In response, many small and medium-size banks may pull back on lending to shore up their finances. A lower pace of lending could help cool the economy and slow inflation.

The possibility of a Fed pause underscores the sharp shift in the nation’s financial system and economy in barely one week. Last Tuesday, Powell had told the Senate Banking Committee that if hiring and inflation continued to run hot, the Fed would likely raise rates at this month’s meeting by a sizeable half-point.

That would have marked a re-acceleration in the Fed’s efforts to tighten credit. The central bank had raised its benchmark rate by a quarter-point in February, a half-point in December and by three-quarters of point four times before that.

The next day, testifying to a House committee, Powell cautioned that no final decision had been made about what the Fed would do at the March meeting. Still, on Friday, the government reported that employers added a robust 311,000 jobs last month. It was a potential sign of continued high inflation, and it led to predictions of a half-point hike at the Fed’s meeting next week.

Later that day, though, Silicon Valley Bank failed, thrusting an entirely new set of concerns onto the Fed.
