UP: Father, brother-in-law arrested for making woman drink toilet cleaner

Lucknow: The father and brother-in-law of a newly-married woman have been arrested for strangling her and making her drink toilet cleaner.

The woman was found naked in the bushes on the Lucknow-Delhi highway on Wednesday.

The accused had poured toilet cleaner on her face in order to disfigure her and conceal her identity.

SSP (Bareilly) Prabhakar Chowdhary said the woman, Munni Devi, a resident of Dhadha village under Shahi police station limits of Bareilly district, was found lying in an injured state under Fatehganj West police station./

The woman, was spotted by some passers-by who informed the police. She was rushed to a hospital where she is battling for life.

“Tota Ram, the father, and her elder sister’s husband, Dinesh, have been arrested for making her forcibly drink acid and throttling her. The accused committed the crime due to ‘social humiliation’ caused by the woman’s illicit relationship with another man,” the police official said.

The woman was unable to speak due to her burn injuries and confirmed her identity by writing her name on paper, after which the entire story behind the incident came to fore, said the officer.

Circle officer (Meerganj) informed media persons that Munni Devi was in a relationship with one Ajay Kumar for many years, but her family members did not approve of it.

Her father said she had eloped with Ajay Kumar twice in the past, added the CO.

He said the woman’s family forcibly got the woman married to one Devendra of Badaun on April 22 and she was shifted from Bareilly.

But she remained in touch with Ajay Kumar. The woman’s father stated she was even found talking to Ajay Kumar on phone when they reached there and was adamant on living with her lover despite getting married to another person, said the CO.

The CO said the woman’s father and brother-in-law took her along when Devendra expressed desire not to live with her.

DCW’s surprise inspection leads to seizure of 50 lt acid from public toilet in Delhi

DCW issues notice to NMC over illegal training for conversion therapy of LGBTQIA+

New Delhi: In a surprise inspection conducted by the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) led by its chief Swati Maliwal, officials have seized around 50 litres of acid from a public toilet located opposite the G.B. Pant Hospital in central Delhi.

The operation was carried out on Thursday and the officials confirmed the seizure of the acid on Friday.

Maliwal has now asked the concerned officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to appear before the commission on April 11 with a detailed report on the matter.

“I was shocked to discover huge quantities of acid kept in the open at a public toilet in Delhi. It could have been used by people for criminal activities. The fact that acid is being used in public toilets for cleaning purposes on a large scale is unacceptable and shameful,” said Maliwal.

“Strict action should be taken against the authorities for encouraging the use of acid for cleaning in toilets. Also, there should be no fee for using public toilets. All the toilets should be functional at all times, and if any toilet is non-functional, strict action should be taken against the official(s) responsible for it,” she added.

During the inspection on Thursday, the commission had noticed that Rs 10 was being charged from the users each time they used the toilet.

“The commission was also informed that the toilet closes down at 10 p.m., rendering women and girls vulnerable to open defecation,” said a DCW official.

Hyderabad: HC seeks report over 1 toilet for 700 girls at Saroornagar govt college

Hyderabad: Taking cognisance of the dilapidated facilities at the government junior college in Saroornagar, the Telangana High Court on Thursday directed the state government to submit a report.

A bench headed by chief justice Ujjal Bhuyan and justice N Tukaramji was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) over one toilet, in a dilapidated condition, being available to 700 girl students in Saroornagar government college.

Issuing notices to the state government (represented by the chief secretary), principal secretary of education, commissioner of Intermediate education, and the college principal, the bench adjourned the hearing to April 25.

Background of the case:

Nallapu Manideep, a law student, sent the chief justice a letter along with a clipping of a news report on December 31, 2022, headlined ‘Protest erupts as Government Junior College has 1 defunct toilet for 700 females’.

The letter was converted into a PIL by the PIL Committee.

The PIL revealed that there was only one toilet for over 700 girl students and poor infrastructure on the campus giving scope to infections.

Further, the girl students complained of being unable to attend college during their menstrual periods since there are no taps or running water while the boys claimed that they resorted to open urination and had to go outside the campus since there was no toilet facility provided for them.

The report also revealed that 300 students of the college boycotted classes due to substandard campus amenities and several other students were using pills to interrupt their menstrual cycles and some avoided drinking water.

The student in his report further wrote that the demands for immediate relief had fallen on deaf ears and urged the judges to direct the authorities to provide all essential amenities at the government junior college.
